In this city was a small, but unique community of immigrants from the country of Yemen. \r\n\r\nWhen photographer Milton Rogovin visited the city in 1977, he was fascinated by the people\u2019s interest in embracing modern-day American experiences while embracing their old-world Yemeni traditions.\r\n\r\nNow this unique blend of culture and identity can be experienced at the University of Michigan Detroit Center with the photo exhibition, \u201cA Yemeni Community: Photographs from the 1970s,\u201d an exhibition of the Arab American National Museum.\r\n\r\nBorn in 1909, Milton Rogovin was raised during the Great Depression and became politically active as a direct result of his childhood experiences with poverty. He studied optometry at Columbia University and opened a shop in Buffalo, New York in 1938. He purchased his first camera in 1942 and, in 1958, spawned a lifelong passion for documentary photography when he collaborated with a music professor to document music at churches. Rogovin began to photograph coal miners from across the world in 1962. These photos were ultimately used in his first and one of his most popular books, \u201cThe Forgotten Ones.\u201d\r\n\r\nLocated in Monts Hall, \u201cA Yemeni Community\u201d runs from January 15 \u2013 February 27, 2016. This differentiated identity becomes an instrument for spatializing innovative lineages, as it reconstitutes ideas of space and time and reshapes the cultural landscape through morphogenetic means.\r\n\r\nThe work scrutinizes the notion of the generic through the process of recombining physical members, growing new appendages and intensifying the human perception of normality. Regenerative bodies develop through differentiation from singular cells. Though Constructivism went out of favor in the 1930s with the rise of Joseph Stalin (1878\u20131953), Constructivist designs continued to have an influence abroad. The exhibition also illustrates the diverse ways in which the developments of the 1990s redefined contemporary approaches to artistic practice and, in the words of exhibition curator Alexandra Schwartz, \u201cwrites a history of the \u201990s through the lens of the visual arts.\u201d\r\n\r\nCome as You Are looks at the dramatic changes in the art world itself, including the ongoing culture wars; issues of artistic freedom and censorship; the impact of new media and the emergence of video, sound, and digital art; the expansion of the global art market; and the explosion of art fairs and biennials. It also investigates the art world\u2019s increasing heterogeneity as artists of color, women artists, and LGBT artists attained increased prominence. Artists include Doug Aitken, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Glenn Ligon, Julie Mehretu, Prema Murthy, Shirin Neshat, Catherine Opie, Gabriel Orozco, Diana Thater, Rirkrit Tiravanija, and Kara Walker in a wide range of works including installations, paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photography, video, and digital art.\r\n\r\nCome as You Are: Art of the 1990s is organized by the Montclair Art Museum and curated by Alexandra Schwartz, curator of contemporary art, with Kimberly Siino, curatorial assistant. Within the first decade of the French Protectorate of Morocco (1912-1956), Resident-General Hubert Lyautey and his team of colonial administrators, ethnographers, and historians embarked upon an extensive campaign to \u201cprotect\u201d Morocco\u2019s material heritage and \u201crevitalize\u201d its traditional arts and craft industries. Hoping to garner moral and economic support for this cultural campaign from the French public, the French Protectorate\u2019s Service of Native Arts organized a temporary exhibition of Moroccan art in the spring of 1917 at the Louvre\u2019s Pavillon de Marsan in Paris. The exhibition, the first of its kind in France, had the unusual mission of at once promoting Morocco\u2019s contemporary artistic products to a body of potential consumers and simultaneously convincing its audience that these objects should be considered works of \u201cart\u201d in the first place. The exhibition\u2019s organizers strove to position \u201cMoroccan art\u201d within the historical narrative and material corpus of \u201cIslamic art,\u201d drawing upon the regimes of value to which an elite community of French scholars and collectors subscribed; nevertheless, their strategies for displaying objects within the space of the exhibition failed to support any clear historical narrative and instead created the impression that Morocco\u2019s arts belonged to a \u201ctimeless\u201d tradition. He is currently teaching graduate studios in architecture and urban design, the graduate lecture course \"Sustainable Urbanism and Architecture\" and an undergraduate lecture course \"Architecture, Sustainability and the City.\"\r\n\r\nThe AIA\/ACSA recognized Kelbaugh as \u201cthe quintessential teaching architect who, over the course of four decades, has achieved estimable success in teaching, practice and writing, which he has ably woven together to shape a generation\u2019s thinking about the environmental aspects of architecture.\u201d He has bridged architecture, urban design and sustainability in practice, academic dialogue and the classroom \u201cas much as any academician in his generation.\u201d\r\n\r\nThroughout his career he has written, spoken and consulted on numerous private and public development projects in the US and abroad. One of the first to popularize the contemporary urban design charrette, he has organized and participated as a team leader in over thirty of these three- to five-day design workshops in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. He has also consulted for the National Renewable Energy Lab and for the OECD on housing and urban development in Scandanavia.\r\n\r\nProfessor Kelbaugh has been a faculty member or visiting professor at eight schools of architecture in the USA, Europe, Japan and Australia, as well as delivered lectures at scores of other schools. Prior to that, he was chair of the Department of Architecture at the University of Washington for eight years. At the University of Michigan, he started the urban design program and a real estate development program, as well as a community design center in Detroit. He oversaw the recruitment 40 new faculty members, and served on many university, state, and national boards and committees. In 2007, he was selected as one of the top seven Architecture Educators of the Year.\r\n\r\nKelbaugh has co-chaired many national and international conferences on energy, urbanism, housing, globalism, and design, spoken to hundreds of professional and community groups, appeared on numerous radio and television programs, and served on three dozen regional and national design awards and competition juries. He co-chaired the 2nd National Passive Solar Conference in 1978, and served on a number of HUD national passive solar design juries. Doug also chaired the AIA National Urban Design Honor Awards jury and the 4th National Symposium on New Urbanism, as well as serving on the National AIA Gold Medal jury. He is currently a member of the Board of the Congress for the New Urbanism.\r\n\r\nWith Peter Calthorpe he edited and co-authored in 1989 The Pedestrian Pocket Book, a national bestseller in urban design that helped jumpstart Transit-Oriented Development. Kelbaugh authored COMMON PLACE: Toward Neighborhood and Regional Design, a book on the theory, design and practice of regionalism published by the University of Washington Press in 1997, now in its second printing. Its sequel, Repairing the American Metropolis: Beyond Common Place, was published in 2002. More recently, he has edited The Michigan Debates on Urbanism (2005) and Writing Urbanism, an urban design reader (2008).
