He studied optometry at Columbia University and opened a shop in Buffalo, New York in 1938. He purchased his first camera in 1942 and, in 1958, spawned a lifelong passion for documentary photography when he collaborated with a music professor to document music at churches. Rogovin began to photograph coal miners from across the world in 1962. These photos were ultimately used in his first and one of his most popular books, \u201cThe Forgotten Ones.\u201d\r\n\r\nLocated in Monts Hall, \u201cA Yemeni Community\u201d runs from January 15 \u2013 February 27, 2016. His pioneering design pieces for Willisau Jazz Festival have been benchmarks in the field of graphic and poster design for about forty-five years and are now in important museum collections such as the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Museum of Modern Art Toyama, Museum for Art and Industry Hamburg, the German Poster Museum in Essen and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.\n\nTroxler\u2019s work centers on the enrichment of the human experience and quality solutions to visual communication design. True to Monkman\u2019s modus operandi, Scent of a Beaver takes on white-washed, colonialist notions of history and overturns them, employing kitsch as a path toward self-determination and veering away from painful, misrepresented histories. It is this sort of conversion that is at the crux of Monkman\u2019s powerful work\u2014the transformation from age-old traditional stories which distort and oppress into something a little fantastical, a bit cathartic, and ultimately redeeming.\r\n\r\nAbout the artist:\r\n\r\nKent Monkman is well known for his provocative reinterpretations of romantic North American landscapes. In addressing this long held question, Dr. Whitmore will examine different episodes of movement by Chinese into the territory of present-day Vietnam. Starting two millennia ago, there occurred several periods of this migration. First, through the first millennium CE to 1100, a mixed group (officials, merchants, monks, et al.) came south into the central Red River plain. Then, from 1100 into the modern era, there was the flow of private Chinese trade and settlement into coastal regions. We see two such groups, interrupted by the Ming ban on such movement: the Ngo (Wu) and the Minh Huong (Ming Xiang). Finally, the modern era of colony and independence saw continued entry under first French, then Vietnamese auspices, reaching a crisis point in the late 1970s. Did these epochs turn Vietnam into a \u2018little China\u2019?\r\n\r\nBiography\r\n\r\nJohn K. Whitmore, a student of O.W. Wolters and a historian of pre-modern Southeast and East Asia and Vietnam, holds his PhD in Southeast Asian History from Cornell University. He has taught at Yale University and the Universities of Michigan, Virginia, and California, Los Angeles, and is currently a research associate of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies here at the University of Michigan. The Dead Sea Scrolls contain not only the oldest manuscripts of biblical texts ever found, but also the remains of many other books that were considered holy. Early Jews were reading tales about the patriarch Enoch, who went to heaven and saw the secrets of the universe, alternative versions of what God told Moses on Mount Sinai, and many more Psalms of David than we can find in our modern Bibles. \r\nHow did the Dead Sea Scrolls change what we know about the Bible and the history of Judaism? What do they tell us about how ancient Jewish communities understood their past, their future, and their relationship to God? And how did modern scholars, both Jewish and Christian, try to make sense of these discoveries? In this talk, we will consider the rich variety of early Jewish literature beyond the Bible, moving between the ancient texts and the world of the 20th century shepherds, scholars, and archaeologists who first brought the Scrolls to light. \r\n\r\nEva Mroczek (PhD 2012, University of Toronto) is Assistant Professor of Premodern Judaism at the Department of Religious Studies at UC Davis. Her first book, The Literary Imagination in Jewish Antiquity, is coming out in April with Oxford University Press. The book discusses how early Jews imagined sacred writing in a literary culture before the categories of \"Bible\" and \"book\" had emerged. Her work on the Dead Sea Scrolls and the literatures of Hellenistic and Early Roman Judaism has appeared in venues like the Journal of Ancient Judaism, Judaisme ancien, the Journal for the Study of Judaism, and Book History. She has also contributed public scholarship to Religion Dispatches and the Marginalia Review of Books. She has two current projects: one focuses on the contrast between the secular-political reception of the figure of King David in contemporary biblical studies and his aesthetic and mystical
