In this city was a small, but unique community of immigrants from the country of Yemen. \r\n\r\nWhen photographer Milton Rogovin visited the city in 1977, he was fascinated by the people\u2019s interest in embracing modern-day American experiences while embracing their old-world Yemeni traditions.\r\n\r\nNow this unique blend of culture and identity can be experienced at the University of Michigan Detroit Center with the photo exhibition, \u201cA Yemeni Community: Photographs from the 1970s,\u201d an exhibition of the Arab American National Museum.\r\n\r\nBorn in 1909, Milton Rogovin was raised during the Great Depression and became politically active as a direct result of his childhood experiences with poverty. He studied optometry at Columbia University and opened a shop in Buffalo, New York in 1938. He purchased his first camera in 1942 and, in 1958, spawned a lifelong passion for documentary photography when he collaborated with a music professor to document music at churches. Rogovin began to photograph coal miners from across the world in 1962. These photos were ultimately used in his first and one of his most popular books, \u201cThe Forgotten Ones.\u201d\r\n\r\nLocated in Monts Hall, \u201cA Yemeni Community\u201d runs from January 15 \u2013 February 27, 2016. It is this sort of conversion that is at the crux of Monkman\u2019s powerful work\u2014the transformation from age-old traditional stories which distort and oppress into something a little fantastical, a bit cathartic, and ultimately redeeming.\r\n\r\nAbout the artist:\r\n\r\nKent Monkman is well known for his provocative reinterpretations of romantic North American landscapes. He explores themes of colonization, sexuality, loss, and resilience\u2014the complexities of historic and contemporary Native American experience\u2014in a variety of mediums including painting, film and video, performance, and installation.\r\n\r\nMonkman\u2019s glamorous diva alter-ego Miss Chief appears in much of his work as an agent provocateur, trickster, and supernatural being who reverses the colonial gaze, upending received notions of history and indigenous people. With Miss Chief at center stage, Monkman has created memorable site-specific performances at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of the American Indian, Compton Verney, and most recently at the Denver Art Museum. Dr. Obar will address \u201cPreventing Big Data Discrimination: Addressing Flawed Notice and Choice Privacy Policy.\u201d The program will shed light on how discrimination is unconsciously built into Big Data.\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nA 2014 White House Report on Big Data suggested that \"big data analytics have the potential to eclipse longstanding civil rights protections in how personal information is used in housing, credit, employment, health, education, and the marketplace.\" In light of growing empirical evidence that forms of discrimination (including racial bias) may already be built-into a mosaic of Big Data approaches, this presentation aims to address a first step for preventing Big Data discrimination. The central argument suggests that consistent and growing evidence that longstanding notice (i.e. privacy policies) and choice (i.e. user access and control of data) privacy policy is deeply flawed, requiring that we both call attention to the failures of the model and propose alternatives. Results from an ongoing quantitative survey analysis co-authored with Dr. Anne Oeldorf-Hirsch (University of Connecticut) demonstrating the extent to which users ignore terms of service and privacy policies online will be presented to demonstrated notice policy flaws. The fallacy of data privacy self-management, an argument recently published by Dr. Obar in \"Big Data and Society,\" will be presented next to argue for flawed choice policy. Representative data management is offered as a pragmatic solution to the challenges faced. Her dissertation for the interdisciplinary doctorate degree at Tufts focused on the role of public history in helping to reinvent\r\na deindustrialized place for a new economy\u037e published as \"The Lowell Experiment: Public History in a Postindustrial City\" (2006), it won the National Council on Public History's 2007 book award. Stanton has served for many years as a consultant to the National Park Service's Ethnography Program, and has produced ethnographic and ethnohistorical studies of various park-associated groups, including reenactors, farmers, and cottagers. She has also been active in the field of digital public history, serving as NCPH's Digital Media Editor since 2008 and overseeing the development of the History@Work blog and other publications. Stanton's recent work and much of her teaching has focused on the \"local food\" movement, and particularly on questions of where it intersects or fails to intersect with historical representations of food production's pasts. The roughness both records previous events and poses the boundary conditions for future rupture. Digital, high precision roughness data is now available at the field scale (10\u2019s of centimeters to 10\u2019s of meters) for at least 22 faults and at the lab scale (millimeters to 10\u2019s of centimeters) for a subset of these. We quantify the slip surface roughness by measuring the aspect ratio, which is the average asperity height divided by the profile length. Higher aspect ratios indicate rougher surfaces. From the field studies two major trends have emerged: (1) fault surfaces roughness falls in a restricted range with aspect ratios in the slip parallel direction of 0.07-0.5% for profiles of 1 m length, and (2) faults surfaces are rougher at small scales than large ones. These features can both be interpreted as fingerprints of scale-dependent strength, which sets a limit to the aspect ratio of the surface. The measurements imply that shear strength scales with the observation scale L as L-0.4.
