In this city was a small, but unique community of immigrants from the country of Yemen. \r\n\r\nWhen photographer Milton Rogovin visited the city in 1977, he was fascinated by the people\u2019s interest in embracing modern-day American experiences while embracing their old-world Yemeni traditions.\r\n\r\nNow this unique blend of culture and identity can be experienced at the University of Michigan Detroit Center with the photo exhibition, \u201cA Yemeni Community: Photographs from the 1970s,\u201d an exhibition of the Arab American National Museum.\r\n\r\nBorn in 1909, Milton Rogovin was raised during the Great Depression and became politically active as a direct result of his childhood experiences with poverty. He studied optometry at Columbia University and opened a shop in Buffalo, New York in 1938. He purchased his first camera in 1942 and, in 1958, spawned a lifelong passion for documentary photography when he collaborated with a music professor to document music at churches. Rogovin began to photograph coal miners from across the world in 1962. These photos were ultimately used in his first and one of his most popular books, \u201cThe Forgotten Ones.\u201d\r\n\r\nLocated in Monts Hall, \u201cA Yemeni Community\u201d runs from January 15 \u2013 February 27, 2016. There have been calls for more drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) prevalence studies yet only 8.3% of the population in high burden countries live in regions with at least two data points to estimate trends. We develop an innovative, low-cost method for estimating disease prevalence that relies solely on routinely-collected data from diagnostic laboratories, provides continuous surveillance and accounts for under-detection. We use TB test result data from South Africa\u2019s National Health Laboratory Service, which includes test records from over 11 million patients, to estimate the prevalence of MDR-TB between 2004-2011. We develop a theoretical model of the clinician\u2019s decision to perform drug susceptibility testing and use a simulated maximum likelihood estimation (SMLE) method and a method of simulated moments (MSM) to estimate model parameters. We estimate that at least one-third of MDR-TB cases went undiagnosed between 2004-2011. The MDR-TB rate in South Africa could be as high as 3.29 - 3.37% and the official World Health Organization estimate of 2.5% based on notification rates is therefore too low. We find that clinician behavior in the province of Mpumalanga is consistent with a sub-optimal approach of MDR testing only after observing the failure of first-line drug therapy. These findings highlight the need for investment in early detection of MDR-TB and more effective treatment. By using tools like these, we can create new possibilities for ourselves and our organizations, and never stop getting better.\r\n\r\nRYAN QUINN is an Associate Professor at the University of Louisville\u2019s College of Business. He researches, teaches, trains, and consults on topics related to leadership and change management. He teaches in the Full-Time, Professional, Weekend and Executive MBA programs, and has also taught in Executive Education and undergraduate programs. He has consulted around the world for Fortune 500 companies, private firms, start-up businesses, non-profits, and government institutions, and is a principal at Lift Consulting. He has also been involved in educational consulting and training, including his involvement in the Darden\/Curry Partnership for Leaders in Education\u2019s Turnaround Specialist program and Wallace Foundation program, helping to train school system administrators to transform public schools and reduce achievement gaps. Ryan\u2019s research focuses on two topics in particular: (1) the role that our psychological states play in our leadership, and (2) how organizations and individuals learn from success.\r\n\r\nRyan has a B.S. in statistics from Brigham Young University, a Ph.D. in Management and Organizations from Michigan Ross, a graduate certificate in the study of complex systems from the University of Michigan, and has studied international business and corporate strategy in Hitotsubashi University in Japan. He has taught at the Olin School of Business in Washington University in St. Louis, the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, and the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. Ryan has also been heavily involved in the Positive Organizational Scholarship movement, focusing many of his research questions on understanding what makes organizations and the people within them flourish, excel, and exceed expectations.\r\n\r\nRyan has published articles in outlets such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Annals, Organization Science, Human Resource Management, Journal of Management, Business & Economy, and The Washington Post. Readership grew by word-of-mouth. People who needed the story found it and told their friends about it.\r\n\r\nThe story won the comics industry's Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic, the Harvey Award, and the German Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis (Youth Literature Prize) and became a pioneering work in the new field of \u201cgraphic medicine.\u201d \r\n\r\nBrian will talk about why and how he created Mom\u2019s Cancer, and the wider social communities he\u2019s entered as a result.
