SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents A Gathering of Friends: Linocut Prints
DESCRIPTION:Laura B. DeLind has been cutting and hand-printing linocuts for over 40 years. She enjoys linoleum as a print medium because it is unpretentious\, has no pre-existing texture\, and lends itself to bold\, spontaneous images. DeLind is fascinated by black and white design and the interactions of positive and negative space. Her prints are inspired by organic shapes\, birds providing a ready-made “excuse” to explore pattern. DeLind’s work has been exhibited regionally and nationally.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Art from My Heart: Ceramics
DESCRIPTION:Daria White Paik grew up in Seoul\, Korea where she received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1983. In 1988\, she moved to the US where she gained her foundation in ceramics at the University of Alabama. When she works with clay\, she starts with a blank state of mind\, and her work comes from her heart. She feels that creativity cannot be learned\; only the techniques can be taught. When she touches clay\, she forgets time\, seeing the only prerequisite for art as a spark of creativity. Paik now teaches at the Ann Arbor Art Center\, is a student advisor at Washtenaw Community College\, and is a member of the Ann Arbor Potter’s Guild.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Scenes in Fabric
DESCRIPTION:Lenore Crawford uses fabric to express her love of French architecture and flowers. The pieces are inspired by photos she has taken\, and she creates her fiber art with an eye for color and realism using a raw edged fusing technique. Small amounts of fabric paint provide detail and shading. The texture and warmth achieved from the fabric itself lends the work an impressionistic softness. Capturing the beauty of everyday life and her surroundings in fiber is her passion.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Splits & Music: Snowflake Paper Cuttings
DESCRIPTION:This year’s exhibition of Dr. Thomas L. Clark’s exquisite\, hand-cut paper creations highlights work from his book Splits as well as a collection of snowflakes about music. Each of these exquisite designs are intricate works of art\, yet as a group\, they tell stories that encompass much more than the sum of their parts. In addition to their pictorial detail\, the perfect symmetry of snowflake design contributes to the metaphorical meanings. A former U-M physician\, Clark\, a.k.a. Dr. Snowflake\, has been exhibiting his snowflakes at U-M Hospitals since 1987. The annual free snowflake making workshop will be held on Thursday\, January 7 from 12:00-2:00 p.m. in the Gifts of Art Gallery – Taubman Health Center North Lobby\, Floor 1.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Yemeni Community: Photographs from the 1970s
DESCRIPTION:Before the decline of its industrial landscape\, Lackawanna\, New York was a lively steel city that employed more than half its population at the Bethlehem Steel plant. In this city was a small\, but unique community of immigrants from the country of Yemen. \n\nWhen photographer Milton Rogovin visited the city in 1977\, he was fascinated by the people’s interest in embracing modern-day American experiences while embracing their old-world Yemeni traditions.\n\nNow this unique blend of culture and identity can be experienced at the University of Michigan Detroit Center with the photo exhibition\, “A Yemeni Community: Photographs from the 1970s\,” an exhibition of the Arab American National Museum.\n\nBorn in 1909\, Milton Rogovin was raised during the Great Depression and became politically active as a direct result of his childhood experiences with poverty. He studied optometry at Columbia University and opened a shop in Buffalo\, New York in 1938. He purchased his first camera in 1942 and\, in 1958\, spawned a lifelong passion for documentary photography when he collaborated with a music professor to document music at churches. Rogovin began to photograph coal miners from across the world in 1962. These photos were ultimately used in his first and one of his most popular books\, “The Forgotten Ones.”\n\nLocated in Monts Hall\, “A Yemeni Community” runs from January 15 – February 27\, 2016. The gallery is open to the public Monday-Thursday from 9 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.\, and 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday\, including complimentary parking and admission.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Converging Paths: The Photography of Pawel Figurski
DESCRIPTION:Converging Paths: The Photography of Pawel Figurski explores the invisible boundary between the sacred and profane and the people who pass through those spaces\, leaving one world to enter another. Figurski focuses his gaze on the ways in which his subjects’ relationship to faith are transformed through the act of pilgrimage and through the encounter with sacred spaces. He is particularly interested in the intrusion of the quotidian into the realm of the sacred.\n\nWhile the exhibition deals primarily with religious life in Figurski’s native Poland\, the artist brilliantly captures Eastern Europe’s diverse religious worlds\, tracing a plurality of spiritual paths\, whether in the pilgrimages of Hasidic Jews to Lezajsk\, or those of Orthodox Christians in Romania and Moldova..\n\nReligious life in that part of the world is sociologically interesting and aesthetically arresting. It is this intersection of the social and aesthetic domains that make Figurski’s photographs so captivating.\n\nPawel Figurski is a graduate of the prestigious Lodz film school. He has shot and directed music videos\, television serials and documentary films\, for which he received several awards\, including an Emmy (2005). For almost a decade (2002-2011)\, he documented Jewish life in Eastern Europe as part of the Archives of Historical and Ethnographic Yiddish Memories at Indiana University. Figurski's photography\, in Converging Paths\, explores the invisible boundary between the sacred and profane and the people who pass through those spaces\, leaving one world to enter another.\n\nPresented in conjunction with the Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies and the Copernicus Program in Polish Studies.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition On-View: AGG Lab
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning presents...Exhibition On-View: AGG Lab. \n\nExhibition On-View: January 16 – February 21\n\nIdentity—human\, animal and architectural—can no longer be defined by a singular character. It is a complex behavioral hybrid\, in the process of responsive and adaptive change\, a state of Deleuzian “becoming”\, expressing plastic identity through the territorializing of behavioral traits. This differentiated identity becomes an instrument for spatializing innovative lineages\, as it reconstitutes ideas of space and time and reshapes the cultural landscape through morphogenetic means.\n\nThe work scrutinizes the notion of the generic through the process of recombining physical members\, growing new appendages and intensifying the human perception of normality. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Scent of a Beaver: An Installation by Kent Monkman
DESCRIPTION:Based on the rococo masterpiece The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard\, Scent of a Beaver is a sculptural installation that features the artist Kent Monkman’s alter ego Miss Chief Eagle Testickle dangling on a swing between a French and English general. With Miss Chief dressed in an opulent silk and fur gown\, the work functions as a metaphor for the power relationships between the major players that shaped the social fabric\, political structures\, and economy of North America. True to Monkman’s modus operandi\, Scent of a Beaver takes on white-washed\, colonialist notions of history and overturns them\, employing kitsch as a path toward self-determination and veering away from painful\, misrepresented histories. It is this sort of conversion that is at the crux of Monkman’s powerful work—the transformation from age-old traditional stories which distort and oppress into something a little fantastical\, a bit cathartic\, and ultimately redeeming.\n\nAbout the artist:\n\nKent Monkman is well known for his provocative reinterpretations of romantic North American landscapes. He explores themes of colonization\, sexuality\, loss\, and resilience—the complexities of historic and contemporary Native American experience—in a variety of mediums including painting\, film and video\, performance\, and installation.\n\nMonkman’s glamorous diva alter-ego Miss Chief appears in much of his work as an agent provocateur\, trickster\, and supernatural being who reverses the colonial gaze\, upending received notions of history and indigenous people. With Miss Chief at center stage\, Monkman has created memorable site-specific performances at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection\, the Royal Ontario Museum\, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian\, Compton Verney\, and most recently at the Denver Art Museum. His award-winning short film and video works have been screened at various national and international festivals\, including the 2007 and 2008 Berlinale\, and the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Soviet Constructivist Posters
DESCRIPTION:During the 1920s the Soviet Union emerged on the world stage. The first decade was full of hope for a new social order that would reject the values and traditions of Tsarist rule. Centered in Moscow\, a group of young artists\, spearheaded in part by Vladimir (1899-1982) and Georgy Stenberg (1900-1933)\, championed an art that promoted the egalitarian ideals of the New Order and contributed to the growth of the Soviet Union. Known as the Constructivists\, they advocated for utilitarian art that was easily accessible and spoke to the masses. Among their most provocative and visionary works were posters advertising Soviet films.\n\n	UMMA’s exhibition\, Soviet Constructivist Posters: Branding the New Order features a selection of posters by the Stenbergs and other Constructivists for some of early cinema’s most inventive films including\, Sergei Eisenstein’sOctober and Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera.\n\n	Using dynamic compositions\, bold colors\, and emblematic images\, these posters announced that the Soviet Union was a progressive nation that could propel society into a utopian future. Their revolutionary aesthetic became associated with the workers’ movement and helped to shape how it was understood both at home and abroad. Though Constructivism went out of favor in the 1930s with the rise of Joseph Stalin (1878–1953)\, Constructivist designs continued to have an influence abroad. Today\, their legacy can be seen in advertisements and other promotional materials made for the public eye.\n\n	Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies and the Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CPPS Lecture. Women\, Class\, Performance: Helena Modjeska as Understudy and Impresario
DESCRIPTION:Helena Modrzejewska (1840-1909)\, the great Polish actress who emigrated to the U.S. mid-career to conquer the American stage as Helena Modjeska\, ingeniously wielded her talent as a performer to achieve rapid social mobility and sociocultural power. Not coincidentally\, Modrzejewska’s chief mentors in this achievement were strategically placed aristocratic women in Poland and “respectable” American women writers\, intellectuals\, and artists who were instrumental in brokering new norms for high culture and professional activism. Modjeska had the good fortune to attain stardom in two national contexts where upper-class cosmopolitan women\, the dictators of social taste\, began to embrace serious actresses as desirable equals and the most effective public messengers for the arts.\n\nThis talk explores Modrzejewska/Modjeska’s development from sociocultural understudy to impresario on two continents\, highlighting key interactions with her mentors. Born illegitimate in a lower middle-class Kraków family and the unwed mother of two children\, Modrzejewska the actress first had to successfully emulate and win the approval of Kraków’s aristocracy and then qualify as a mover and shaker in the more hybridized upper-class society of Warsaw\, where she kept her own salon and reigned on the stage of the Teatr Wielki\, implementing new repertoire. Her progress in these cities was paved by the interventions of\, respectively\, Countess Arturowa Potocka and Countess Maria Kalergis-Muchanowa. In America\, Modjeska easily established her respectability before a public ignorant of her past\, yet she had to prove her talent as an English-speaking actress of serious drama and\, in the process\, connect with a nationwide network of women writers\, critics\, intellectuals\, and artists (ranging from Annie Adam Fields to Willa Cather) to cultivate sociocultural influence. In Poland and the United States\, Helena Modjeska depended on an elite\, often eccentric sisterhood to vouch for her class and empower her public persona.\n\nBeth Holmgren is professor of Russian and Polish cultures in Duke University’s Slavic and Eurasian Studies Department. Recent books include Starring Madame Modjeska: On Tour in Poland and America (Indiana\, 2012)\, which won four national awards\, and Americans Experience Russia: Encountering the Enigma\, 1917 to the Present\, edited with Choi Chatterjee (Routledge\, 2013). She is currently working on two books\, one a co-edited volume with Yana Hashamova and Mark Lipovetsky\, Transgressive Women in Modern Russian and East European Cultures: From the Bad to the Blasphemous\, the other a monograph\, How the Cabaret Went to War\, about the experience and influence of acculturated Jewish cabaret artists attached to the Polish II Corps during World War II.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Speaker Series with Dr. Paul Barber\, Professor\, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology\, University of California\, Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:The Coral Triangle is the global epicenter of marine biodiversity. While this pattern has been known for decades\, the origins of this pattern are still actively debated. Integrating phytogeographic and genomic data with physical oceanographic modeling and ecology\, we demonstrate pluralistic drivers of marine diversification in this region ranging from eustatic sea level changes to ecological divergence. We have used this research as a platform both for building capacity in one of the worlds most imperiled and least studied marine ecosystems as well as increasing diversity in marine sciences. Through the integration of education and research\, we are creating future biodiversity leaders in Indonesia and diversifying marine science in the United States.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: \"Northern Slavery\, the Art of Dissection\, and a Doctor’s Fortune\"
DESCRIPTION:This talk examines the relationship between medical-knowledge generation and white uses of Black bodies by looking to long-standing\, northern roots and routes of white professional reputation and capital production. By considering a slave-holding Connecticut family that spawned two centuries of doctors\, and by focusing on Fortune\, the man they claimed as property in life and in death\, Professor Foreman examines the mortuary politics and anatomical entrepreneurialism at work when human remains are used as artifacts that serve to amass multi-generational professional standing. This talk asks how chattel remains\, blanched of the violence of their genesis\, inform the legacy of slavery and its afterlives.\n\nP. Gabrielle Foreman\, a poet’s daughter turned literary historian\, is presently at work on a book entitled \"The Art of DisMemory: Historicizing Slavery in Poetry\, Performance and Material Culture\" and an edited collection of artistic responses to David Drake\, the enslaved South Carolina potter and poet\, by painter Jonathan Green and poet Glenis Redmond. She attended Amherst College and the University of California\, Berkeley before joining the faculty at the University of Delaware as the Ned B. Allen Professor of English and Professor of History and Black American Studies.\n\nFree and open to the public.\n\nThis lecture is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Literature\, Interregnum\, Evil: Bolaño’s 2666
DESCRIPTION:Roberto Bolaño’s posthumous novel 2666 reflects on how the most recent stage of globalization has transformed the social topography of northern Mexico while generating the morbid symptoms that frequently accompany the demise of a prevailing order. The novel invites us to think this transformation as interregnum\, or as a hiatus that ensues following the demise of the sovereign. But what exactly is it that has died as far as Bolaño is concerned? I propose that it is not just the national state and its role in containing and regulating the contradictions generated by capitalism but also literature itself\, or at least a certain understanding of literature that has fallen. And what then would be left of literature\, if literature has not simply gone away? One possible answer can be found in the relation that the novel takes up with the question of evil.\n\nSponsored by the Department of Romance Langauges and Literatures\, the Institute for the Humanities\, the International Institute\, and Rackham Graduate School

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Rise and Fall of Lesbian Nation: A Brief History of Lesbian Feminism and What it Accomplished
DESCRIPTION:Lesbian feminism grew directly out of two movements that began in the 1960s: feminism and gay liberation. Though premised on essentialist notions of “woman\,” the lesbian feminist movement was an important corrective to the displacement lesbians suffered in the feminist movement\, (where they’d been dubbed the “lavender menace”) and in the gay liberation movement (which was overwhelming male). Lesbian feminists created a unique culture that flourished throughout the 1970s and well into the ‘80s and\, for many young lesbians\, served as a crucial base for their development.\n\nRamp and elevator access at the E. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Carrigan Lecture Series in Music Theory: Maryam Moshavar
DESCRIPTION:Maryam Moshavar’s research focuses on the history of music theory and its intersections with philosophy and aesthetics\, the interfaces of music and poetry\, and phenomenology.\n\nIn his 1748 “Memoir on Mathematical Subjects” Diderot asks whether the soul can be “secretly guided” by the perception of rapports between musical sounds\, and be influenced in its aesthetic judgments by “a kind of secret and natural trigonometry.” The subject of the sensory perception of rapports\, in part reminiscent of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s contested claims about the geometrical affinities of the musical ear\, is one that brings together a cross-current of epistemologies of rationalist as well as empiricist origin. In question\, from an empiricist standpoint\, is the ontological and epistemological status of abstraction and geometric figuration in perception\, and the possibility\, as Alain Cernuschi (2000) has pointed out\, of envisioning a correlation between the object of perception (the object of physico-mathematical observation) and the object of reflection in which sonorous musical events are constituted. Though the question of the perception of rapports in the sensory domain\, and the impact of such perceptions on aesthetic and musical experience is a lingering one in Diderot’s writings\, d’Alembert’s verdict\, hidden in the 1752 edition of his Elémens de musique but emerging to the forefront in the preamble to Volume VI of the Encyclopédie in 1756\, appears definitive and without appeal. In this paper\, Moshavar returns to the public face of d’Alembert’s refutation that brings Rameau’s principle of the fundamental bass to a checkmate from the standpoint not just of its physics\, but also of its practice and aesthetics\, and consider the conception of music theory that is left behind\, from the “point of view\,” in d’Alembert’s words\, “under which science envisions its object.”

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Neue Leben
DESCRIPTION:Ingo Schulze is the author of 'Simple Stories' and 'Neue Leben'\, both of which thematize the process of German reunification (“Wende”) from a deliberately provincial\, East German perspective. Schulze grew up in Dresden and studied classical philology at the University of Jena. He worked as a Dramaturg for the theater in Altenburg and as a journalist for the short-lived Altenburger Wochenblatt (1990-91) that he co-founded. Both 'Neue Leben' and his subsequent novel 'Adam und Evelyn' were finalists for the German Book Prize in 2006 and 2008\, respectively. The recipient of a fellowship at the Villa Massimo in Rome\, Schulze published a collection of stories entitled 'Orangen und Engel: Italienische Skizzen'\, which appeared in 2010. He has taught at the University of Lüneburg (as a Heinrich-Heine-Gastdozent)\, written a prize-winning radio feature (Das Deutschlandgerät) and won numerous literary awards\, including the Peter-Weiss Prize\, the Thüringer Literaturpreis\, the Bertolt-Brecht Prize.\nDescribed by the New York Times as a “mordant comedy\,” Ingo Schulze’s 2005 novel 'Neue Leben' presents the story of Enrico Türmer\, a young man who becomes caught up in the transition from East German socialism to capitalism in a unified Germany after 1989. Türmer\, a failed writer in the GDR\, becomes an entrepreneur in the new Germany. Presented as a series of letters written by Türmer to his lover\, his brother\, and his sister (and annotated with footnotes by one Ingo Schulze)\, the novel is both a historical document and an experiment in epistolary form. As one reviewer poignantly put it\, the novel tells the story of how the East and the West became lost to one another after 1989.\nThe reading will be in German\, with copies available in English. Discussion will be in English.
