He studied optometry at Columbia University and opened a shop in Buffalo, New York in 1938. He purchased his first camera in 1942 and, in 1958, spawned a lifelong passion for documentary photography when he collaborated with a music professor to document music at churches. Rogovin began to photograph coal miners from across the world in 1962. These photos were ultimately used in his first and one of his most popular books, \u201cThe Forgotten Ones.\u201d\r\n\r\nLocated in Monts Hall, \u201cA Yemeni Community\u201d runs from January 15 \u2013 February 27, 2016. Julius Caesar, Cicero, Augustus, and Nero all owned villas in this region. With more than 200 objects on loan from Italy, the exhibition focuses on two structures at Oplontis that were buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. One is an enormous luxury villa that may once have belonged to the family of Nero\u2019s second wife Poppaea. The other is a nearby commercial-residential complex\u2014a center for the trade in wine and other produce of villa lands. Together these two establishments speak eloquently of the ways in which the Roman elite built, maintained, and displayed their vast wealth, political power, and social prestige. In presenting a selection of impressive works of art along with ordinary utilitarian objects, the exhibition also calls attention to Roman disparities of wealth, social class, and consumption. Such disparities were as problematic for Roman society as they are for ours today.\r\n\r\nThis exhibition in Ann Arbor will remain open to the public until May 15, 2016. The UM collection includes a series of 26 pocket maps of the districts in and around the city of Edo. Primarily attributed to Owariya Seishichi, Masanori Tomatsu and Muneyasu, the set became known as the Edo Kiri ezu. The first imprint was so popular that it was reprinted in its entirety in 1857 and 1870. This lecture will discuss these maps of the city of Edo during the final decades of the Edo Period in the context of the work of Hokusai and Hiroshige.\r\n\r\nRichard A. Pegg is the Museum and Map Library Director and Curator of Asian Art at the MacLean Collection in Chicago, Illinois. He earned his B.A. and M.A. in Chinese Literature at George Washington University, and his PhD in East Asian Art History at Columbia University. He has published a number of books, exhibition catalogs, articles, and reviews on a broad range of topics related to Chinese, Japanese, and Korean art history. The decisions of the United States to engage in the Korean War of 1950 and to enter into the KORUS alliance of 1953 have been interpreted to mean an important departure from the post- World War II strategy of the United States in Northeast Asia.\r\n\r\nOn July 27, 2013, President Barack Obama led more than 7,000 people in a ceremony on the national mall that commemorated both the 60th anniversary of the ceasefire that ended the Korean War and the formation of the KORUS Alliance. Behind the pomp of the military band, the solemnity of the remembrance, and the succession of the speeches lay many questions about the history and legacy of the Korea-US Alliance, including:\r\n\r\n What factors drove the United States to make the important decisions of 1950 and 1953?\r\n\r\n What is the legacy of the Korea-US Alliance? For Korean security? For Korea\u2019s economic development, which transformed the country from one of the poorest in the world in 1950 to the US\u2019 6th largest trading partner today? For Korea\u2019s political democratization? For the growth of the Korea-US partnership in important global issues, including the fight against terrorism, cooperation in development assistance, and the containment of epidemics?\r\n\r\n How does the United States\u2019 engagement in the Korean War compare with its military engagements in other parts of the world after WWII?
