SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:A Wall in Process
DESCRIPTION:This wall-in-process represents a snapshot into the year long collaborative project Humanize the Numbers at the University of Michigan. Led by Virginia artist and prison reform activist Mark Strandquist\, this campus-wide endeavor aims to link together community partners—prison reformers and advocates\, faculty\, staff\, students\, artists\, the incarcerated\, and their families—in various artistic outputs to foster knowledge and to reveal the human face of the Michigan prison system. \n\nWhat will emerge on this wall over the course of its eight week duration is the product of partnerships between the Institute for the Humanities and artists and prison reform activists. We have collected material from the Prison Creative Arts Program (PCAP)\, the Citizens’ Alliance on Prisons and Public Spending (CAPPS)\, Ana Fernandez’s undergraduate printmaking course in the Residential College\, Natalie Holbrook from the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC)\, the AFSC’s Good Neighbor Letter Writing Project as facilitated by Ron Simpson-Bey\, and a quilting workshop in a Michigan girls’ treatment unit facilitated by Theadra Fleming and Heather Martin. \n\nThis wall is not static\, fixed\, or ever meant to be complete. Its appearance will change week by week\, both in an additive and reductive sense. The room will also serve as a meeting place for lectures and workshops by Humanize the Numbers partners throughout the exhibit’s duration. Displaying both the seemingly mundane and the extraordinary\, the wall aims to engage viewers and garner interest in the pursuit of knowledge on Michigan’s prison system\, acting as a humanistic lens into the lives affected by our prison system on a personal\, institutional\, statewide\, and nationwide scope.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Albert Kahn: Under Construction
DESCRIPTION:In the past two decades there has been a tremendous swell of interest in Detroit architect Albert Kahn (1869–1942)\, arguably the most important architect of American industrialization. Albert Kahn: Under Construction focuses on the remarkable archive of photographs assembled by Albert Kahn Associates while building the powerhouses of American industry\, from the Highland Park Ford Plant to the Willow Run Bomber Plant. Shot by an array of professional photographers based mainly in Detroit\, these often striking documentary images were a novel strategy for conveying information about the daily progress of construction to busy managers at the main office. The exhibition foregrounds the photographic series as a way of illustrating change over time—showing buildings as they grew on site—and Kahn’s innovative solutions to the architectural challenges of his day.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

State Street\, Ann Arbor 48109-3091\n\nSponsored by:\nCenter for Local\, State\, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP)\n \nCo-Sponsors: \nSchool of Social Work\nSchool of Public Health\n\nDescription:\nUniversal child care has been a longstanding goal of child care advocates in both Canada and the United States since the 1960s\, yet in 2016 that goal remains stubbornly elusive in both federations despite decades of activism. Responsibility for child care delivery has been shared in both countries between federal\, “meso” (provincial/state)\, and local governments with more of that responsibility being downloaded to the state/provincial level since the 1990s. In this research presentation\, I compare two of these meso level cases (Ontario and Michigan) to understand how child care advocates have navigated these decentralized landscapes. What factors explain successful policy outcomes and what barriers persist? Are universal programs and longer term social justice advocacy claims viable in decentralized federations?\n\nAbout the speaker:\nCheryl N. Collier is an Associate Professor and Undergraduate Chair in the Department of Political Science at the University of Windsor and the co-director of the university’s cross-disciplinary Health Research Centre for the Study of Violence against Women. Her primary areas of research include Canadian federal and provincial child care and anti-violence policy\, comparative women’s movements and gender\, federalism and political parties. This semester she is teaching a graduate seminar in Public Management in the Ford School of Public Policy as an Adjunct Professor. She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Toronto and an MA in Canadian Studies and a Bachelor of Journalism from Carleton University.\n\nFor more information contact Bonnie Roberts at fischerb@umich.edu or 734-647-4091\, or visit www.closup.umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition: Research Through Making
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning presents...Research Through Making.\n\nHistorically\, research and creative practice have been constructed as \"opposites.\" This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools\, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an \"applied art.\" Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases\, design can be a purely problem solving activity\, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.\n\nIn its seventh year\, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research\, worked on by faculty\, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.\n\nPresentation of projects will start at 6:00pm in the Art & Architecture Building Auditorium\, with a reception to follow at the Liberty Annex.\n\nResearch Through Making Installations:\n\n\"Tap\"\nAdam Fure\n\n\"Panots & Mosiacs: The Plasticity of Hydraulic Cement through Making\"\nAna Morcillo Pallares and Jonathan Rule\n\n\"Dip and Dive in the D\"\nClaudia Wigger\n\n\"Infundibuliforms: Cable Robot Actuated Kinetic Environments\"\nWes McGee\, Geoffrey Thün\, Kathy Velikov\n\n\"Post Rock\"\nMeredith Miller and Thom Moran\n\nGrant submissions were anonymously evaluated by a distinguished jury from outside the college:\n\nBenjamin Ball\, Lead Artist and Principal\, Ball-Nogues Studio\nBrooke Hodge\, Deputy director\, Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum\nMark Lamster\, Architecture critic\, The Dallas Morning News\n\nThis exhibition runs from March 10 - April 15. \n\nThe Liberty Gallery is located at 305 W. Exhibition hours are Thursday to Sunday from 3:00-7:00pm unless otherwise noted.\n\nAbout University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning:\n\nThe Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan is a leader in interdisciplinary education and research with a focus on creating a more beautiful\, inclusive and better built environment. The college and its alumni are committed to pushing the boundaries of architectural practice\, advancing global engagement\, and significantly enhancing diversity in the profession. The college offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Architecture\, Master of Architecture (currently ranked #6 nationally\; ranked #1 in 2010 by Design Intelligence Report)\, Master of Science in Architecture\, Master of Urban Planning\, Master of Urban Design\, and PhD programs.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral\, and Experimental Economics (SBEE)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe use more than 63\,000 datapoints from a German used car market website to document systematic and substantial price drops at vintage (= year of first registration) thresholds and 10\,000 km odometer marks. The latter finding replicates the findings in Lacetera et al. (2012)\, whereas the first dimension cannot be analyzed with their US data because only German cars have such legally mandated and regulated “birthdates”. Hence we have the unique opportunity to study the presence of coarse information processing within the same dataset and decision problem but across two separate domains. We document that discontinuities in these two domains are of comparable size. While Lacetera et al. (2012) explain\ntheir result with a left-digit bias in the processing of numerical information\, vintage discontinuities cannot be explained by this. We propose a slightly more general model of information prominence and availability bias to accommodate our findings.\nWe continue to show evidence from a natural field experiment in another online market to disentangle the effects of inattention and \"standard\" search costs to such discontinuities. We finally document similar discontinuities in German wage data and show that these disontinuities are linked to economically important outcomes like job satisfaction and job search.

Check back here on the day of the event for viewing access.\n\nJoin the conversation: #policytalks\n\nOn September 11\, 2001\, our security environment changed forever. For the first time\, a non-state actor\, al Qaida\, had inflicted significant damage on a state. In one hour and 17 minutes\, 19 terrorists murdered 2977 people from more than 90 countries and inflicted tens of billions of dollars of damage on the United States. Hear how the rise of non-state actors with global reach\, like al Qaida and ISIS\, has significantly complicated an already difficult international security environment.\n\nFrom the speaker's bio:\n\nGeneral George W. Casey\, Jr. served at the 36th Chief of Staff for the U. S. Army from April 10\, 2007 to April 11\, 2011. In his previous assigment\, he was the Commander of the Multi-National Force - Iraq\, a coalition of over thirty countries from July 1\, 2004 to February 10\, 2007. George Casey was commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in 1970. Throughout his career\, Casey has served on operational assignments in Germany\, Italy\, Egypt\, Southwest Asia\, and the United States. He has commanded at every level from platoon to division. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Near Eastern Studies Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Around the Arabophone Mediterranean\, the 10th century (CE) witnessed the rise of a new kind of human who needed a new kind of humanism. They were self-made men and women -- merchants\, barley-mongers\, and cotton importers (among others) -- who were dubbed with the neologism “new money” (dhul tarif) or “merit-folk” (dhul-hasab)\, and when that did not ring a bell\, the phrase \"neither royalty nor rabble.\" Defined by negation\, they existed in a boundary condition on the selvages: beneath the nobility\, and having risen from humble\, often stigmatized\, origins. This paper explores their vulnerability and the emergence of a kind of public humanism that saturated the lives of this mercantile sub-nobility with symbolic resources to project subjectivity\, as well as political and poetic leverage in society. This new \"adab\" humanism enabled them to come together as a public around issues of common concern\, such as the essence of personhood\, dignity\, and leadership\, and push back against the state.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Mixed-Race Politics: Bill de Blasio’s 2013 New York City Mayoral Campaign
DESCRIPTION:This paper investigates the ways in which multicultural rhetoric situates black-white mixed-race individuals and their families as a bridge between disparate groups and ideologies. Using Bill de Blasio’s New York City Mayoral campaign in 2013 as a case study\, I highlight specific media moments in which de Blasio’s children and his interracial marriage to a black woman are deployed as symbols of political (and by extension\, racial) futurity. The key questions of this paper ask: How was mixed-race as a symbol deployed in the de Blasio campaign\, particularly in the context of the family? What specifically did mixed-race symbolize in this political sphere? Did de Blasio's family fight back against essentialized multicultural ideals or simply deploy them to capture the minority vote? In answering these questions I conduct a close reading of de Blasio’s well-known TV advertisement featuring his then 15-year-old son Dante\, and put it in conversation with persistent racisms in the form of police brutality\, an issue that was central to de Blasio’s campaign. This work engages topics at the intersection of critical mixed-race studies\, performance studies\, and visual culture\, drawing upon and contesting current research that places mixed-race people at the forefront of a changing American demographic and political climate.\n\n\n\nThe Black Humanities Collective (BHC) is an interdisciplinary graduate student organization at the University of Michigan that fosters a community of scholars invested in the intellectual\, professional\, and social growth and development of students across disciplines whose research interests focus on the African Diaspora. In working toward our mission to affirm and improve the University's commitment to the intellectual and professional development of persons at the University of Michigan studying Africa and its Diaspora\, we host a variety of events throughout the year that cater both to graduate and undergraduate students.
