Katchadourian considers the ongoing quandary of where we really come from, who we are, trying to isolate our sense of ourselves in counterpoint with the way people define or judge us based upon their assumptions. It is, of course, the unique combination of things that offers our most comprehensive and authentic self-reflection, not one thing or another, and this amalgamation is to some degree indecipherable.\r\n\r\n\r\nAlthough they have lived in the United States for over 45 years, Katchadourian\u2019s foreign-born parents both have distinctive but hard-to-place accents that the artist has never been able to imitate correctly. Inspired by posters around New York advertising courses in \u201caccent elimination,\u201d Katchadourian decided to hire a professional who could teach her to speak in each of her parents\u2019 accents and teach them to speak with a so-called \u201cstandard American accent.\u201d Katchadourian and her parents took intensive lessons with accent coach Sam Chwat at his office every other day for several weeks, and also practiced in the artist\u2019s studio between lessons. They worked with two scripts: one written by her mother and the other by her father, both modeled on the typical conversation that each of them has when talking with a stranger who notices an accent and is curious about its origins.\r\n\r\nKatchadourian plays the part of the stranger. The dialogues are first performed in everyone\u2019s natural accents, then at the end of the piece, after much practice and struggle, they attempt to perform the\r\nsame scripts\u2014in the best version they can muster\u2014of their new accents.\r\n\r\nIn light of recent and all-too-familiar seismic political shifts consumed with \u201cotherness,\u201d and building walls rather than bringing them down, Accent Elimination feels especially prescient. It reminds us there\r\nare so many layers that comprise our cultural identities, stacked up like markers, artifacts of our points of origin as well as our extraordinary journeys. It is an ongoing and painstaking process as to what we save and what we lose along the way by choice, necessity, or circumstance. And in all of this, perhaps we discover ourselves on common ground.\r\n\r\nAccent Elimination was included at the 2015 Venice Biennale in the Armenian pavilion, which won the Golden Lion for Best National Participation. The Fellows will present their projects to the college at 6:00 p.m. in the Auditorium. The projects present their ongoing research during their yearlong fellowship. A reception will follow the presentations, with exhibition on view in the college gallery.\r\n\r\n\r\nCyrus Pe\u00f1arroyo - William Muschenheim Fellow\r\n\r\nBLDG_DRWG\r\nBLDG_DRWG recoups handwrought drawing effects and rearranges drawing conventions at the building scale in order to reorient the ways in which architecture is produced and consumed. Oscillating between analog methods (ink, paint, tape) and digital processes (scanning, photoshop filtering, milling), this project intensifies attributes of drawing otherwise lost in translation. A series of 1:1 investigations harnesses the potency of these effects and uses them to emphasize, deemphasize, or reconstitute existing architectural conditions. The results of these studies are reassembled in the gallery as a room\u2013\u2013one fragment of an unfinished building\u2013\u2013that speaks to the instability of its own representation.\r\n\r\nTeam members: Andrew Barkhouse, Peter Watkins\r\nWith assistance from: Chris Campbell, Samantha Eng, Matt Culver, Asa Peller, Tafhim Rahman\r\n\r\n\r\nAshley Bigham - Walter B. Sanders Fellow\r\n\r\nSafety Not Guaranteed\r\nArchitecture is inseparable from defense. From its most primitive and revered \u201corigins,\u201d architecture was rehearsed in environments of conflict. As an alternative to the term defense architecture, a category which typically refers to forms and types (fortresses, citadels, bastions, urban walls), this project proposes the idea of an architecture of defense. An architecture of defense sees all of architecture as a reaction to some measure of paranoia and studies the built environment to recognize measures and methods used to subdue these fears. Safety Not Guaranteed explores the architecture of paranoia through a series of design manipulations and exaggerations. Its setting is the network of suburbia and everyday domestic scenes\u2014spaces most commonly associated with privacy, safety, and security and where fortification occurs on the scale of the front door, the home, the cul-de-sac, and the neighborhood.\r\n\r\nTeam Members: Connor Brindza, James Howe, Neall Oliver, Sasha Pfeiffer, Mark Boynton, Kamsy Anyachebelu\r\n\r\n\r\nDavid Eskenazi - Willard A. Oberdick Fellow\r\n\r\nFor the Trees\r\nAt first I noticed how naked the papers were, since they didn\u2019t seem to be acting like something else. I guess they were supposed to be models, it was an architecture exhibit after all, but they were missing all those things that point elsewhere: no doors, no windows, nothing that particularly looks like anything but itself. They were formed, sure, but that\u2019s not really enough to point outwards. Or is it? Before you answer, there was one more thing: some of the papers were near an enlarged duplicate. Actually, maybe they were shrunken copies. It was a lot like that moment at the top of Runyon Canyon when you turn around and realize there\u2019s an entire other, slightly smaller Los Angeles behind you. Were you just looking at the original, or the copy? I think the most interesting part is right afterwards when your focus shifts around you to the ground, the dirt, the trees.. all that stuff that frames what you\u2019re looking at, like the base of a model or scale figures or model trees. Come to think of it, the papers did look like trees. But the resemblance is fleeting, and now I\u2019m certain the papers were in fact models pointing around at each other. Evidence-based governance depends on the availability of numbers to assess the size, scope, and nature of an issue. Numbers are necessary even to bring an issue to the attention of governments. Issues that are measured become politically visible while those that are not tend to disappear. Of course, politics determines what gets counted. What seems politically important to a person or organization that has the power and resources to count it ends up being what is counted. Measurement makes issues visible: it moves them from the domain of the everyday and natural to that of the visible and publicly recognizable. Once countable, the concept is more publicly recognizable and more amenable to governance and public concern. When such a process is successful, it raises unnoticed parts of social life to public attention and renders them visible and open to reform. It enables comparisons among the relative happiness of cities, for example, or the quality of universities. However, bringing uncounted domains of social life into the sphere of the measured requires substantial effort and resources. The measurement process requires investments in conceptual development, data gathering, pilot testing, and dissemination of results. Once this process is finished, however, the numbers often have a significant impact on governance.\r\n\r\nThis talk explores the role of measurement in promoting compliance with human rights treaties. It examines an effort by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to create a set of indicators for twelve human rights and shows how this process redefined human rights in a developmental framework. A project initiated to increase compliance with human rights became one designed to make law understandable to development economists, producing a development-based human rights system with differing logics and approaches than those of a more legally-based human rights system. As human rights norms were translated into quantifiable measures, they were not only redefined but also incorporated into a developmental theory of social change.\r\n\r\nSall Engle Merry Bio:\r\n\r\nSally Engle Merry is Silver Professor and Professor of Anthropology at New York University. She is also Associate Department Chair, Faculty Co-director of the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at the New York University School of Law, and past president of the American Ethnological Society. She is the author or editor of fifteen books and special journal issues and over one hundred and twenty-five articles and reviews. Her recent books include Colonizing Hawai\u2018i (Princeton, 2000), Human Rights and Gender Violence (Chicago, 2006), Gender Violence: A Cultural Perspective (Blackwells, 2009) and The Practice of Human Rights, (co-edited with Mark Goodale; Cambridge, 2007). She received the Hurst Prize for Colonizing Hawai\u2018i in 2002, the Kalven Prize for scholarly contributions to sociolegal scholarship in 2007, and the J.I. Staley Prize for Human Rights and Gender Violence in 2010. In 2013 she received an honorary degree from McGill School of Law and was the focus of an Author Colloquium at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZIF) at the University of Bielefeld, Germany. Parents of children born in January must wait more than a year before they can receive child-related tax benefits. As a result, families with December births have higher after-tax income in the first year of a child\u2019s life than otherwise similar families with January births. This paper estimates the corresponding income effect on maternal labor supply, testing whether mothers who give birth in December work and earn less in the months following birth. We use data from the American Community Survey, the Survey of Income and Program Participation, and the 2000 Decennial Census. We find that December mothers have a lower probability of working, particularly in the third month after a child\u2019s birth. Earnings data from the SIPP indicate that an additional dollar of child-related tax benefits reduces annual maternal earnings in the year following a child\u2019s birth by approximately one dollar.",
