Katchadourian considers the ongoing quandary of where we really come from, who we are, trying to isolate our sense of ourselves in counterpoint with the way people define or judge us based upon their assumptions. It is, of course, the unique combination of things that offers our most comprehensive and authentic self-reflection, not one thing or another, and this amalgamation is to some degree indecipherable.\r\n\r\n\r\nAlthough they have lived in the United States for over 45 years, Katchadourian\u2019s foreign-born parents both have distinctive but hard-to-place accents that the artist has never been able to imitate correctly. Inspired by posters around New York advertising courses in \u201caccent elimination,\u201d Katchadourian decided to hire a professional who could teach her to speak in each of her parents\u2019 accents and teach them to speak with a so-called \u201cstandard American accent.\u201d Katchadourian and her parents took intensive lessons with accent coach Sam Chwat at his office every other day for several weeks, and also practiced in the artist\u2019s studio between lessons. They worked with two scripts: one written by her mother and the other by her father, both modeled on the typical conversation that each of them has when talking with a stranger who notices an accent and is curious about its origins.\r\n\r\nKatchadourian plays the part of the stranger. The dialogues are first performed in everyone\u2019s natural accents, then at the end of the piece, after much practice and struggle, they attempt to perform the\r\nsame scripts\u2014in the best version they can muster\u2014of their new accents.\r\n\r\nIn light of recent and all-too-familiar seismic political shifts consumed with \u201cotherness,\u201d and building walls rather than bringing them down, Accent Elimination feels especially prescient. It reminds us there\r\nare so many layers that comprise our cultural identities, stacked up like markers, artifacts of our points of origin as well as our extraordinary journeys. It is an ongoing and painstaking process as to what we save and what we lose along the way by choice, necessity, or circumstance. And in all of this, perhaps we discover ourselves on common ground.\r\n\r\nAccent Elimination was included at the 2015 Venice Biennale in the Armenian pavilion, which won the Golden Lion for Best National Participation. A reception will follow the presentations, with exhibition on view in the college gallery.\r\n\r\n\r\nCyrus Pe\u00f1arroyo - William Muschenheim Fellow\r\n\r\nBLDG_DRWG\r\nBLDG_DRWG recoups handwrought drawing effects and rearranges drawing conventions at the building scale in order to reorient the ways in which architecture is produced and consumed. Oscillating between analog methods (ink, paint, tape) and digital processes (scanning, photoshop filtering, milling), this project intensifies attributes of drawing otherwise lost in translation. A series of 1:1 investigations harnesses the potency of these effects and uses them to emphasize, deemphasize, or reconstitute existing architectural conditions. From its most primitive and revered \u201corigins,\u201d architecture was rehearsed in environments of conflict. As an alternative to the term defense architecture, a category which typically refers to forms and types (fortresses, citadels, bastions, urban walls), this project proposes the idea of an architecture of defense. An architecture of defense sees all of architecture as a reaction to some measure of paranoia and studies the built environment to recognize measures and methods used to subdue these fears. Safety Not Guaranteed explores the architecture of paranoia through a series of design manipulations and exaggerations. Oberdick Fellow\r\n\r\nFor the Trees\r\nAt first I noticed how naked the papers were, since they didn\u2019t seem to be acting like something else. I guess they were supposed to be models, it was an architecture exhibit after all, but they were missing all those things that point elsewhere: no doors, no windows, nothing that particularly looks like anything but itself. They were formed, sure, but that\u2019s not really enough to point outwards. Or is it? Before you answer, there was one more thing: some of the papers were near an enlarged duplicate. Actually, maybe they were shrunken copies. It was a lot like that moment at the top of Runyon Canyon when you turn around and realize there\u2019s an entire other, slightly smaller Los Angeles behind you. Were you just looking at the original, or the copy? I think the most interesting part is right afterwards when your focus shifts around you to the ground, the dirt, the trees.. all that stuff that frames what you\u2019re looking at, like the base of a model or scale figures or model trees. Come to think of it, the papers did look like trees. But the resemblance is fleeting, and now I\u2019m certain the papers were in fact models pointing around at each other. How black women conceptualize and enact agency in the home birth space\"\r\n\r\nThere currently is limited research about the motivations and experiences of black women who give birth at home, and instead it is framed as a choice for advantaged, white women. With the assumption that giving birth at home allows women more control over their birth, this project focuses on how black women who have given birth at home think about birth, how they create birth spaces that prioritize their decisions, and what particular experiences or challenges black women may face in deciding their place of birth. Using a reproductive justice framework, this project seeks to understand the current state of planned home birth for black women in the context of health disparities, limited choices for place of birth, and challenges in accessing a range of options. This thesis positions black women who give birth at home within the history of black reproduction that extends generations to assert that black women make the decision to home birth within unique historical legacies. The narratives collected indicate that black women\u2019s creation of agentic home birth spaces is done through the support they foster from providers and family, their rejection of medicalized birth spaces, and their ability to access the care they seek. In this agentic space, they are truly able to experience birth as an empowering and life-changing process. Advisor: Lisa Kane Low and Leseliey Welch\r\n\r\nKatherine Irani\r\n\"Violence and Voicelessness: Experiences of Survivors of Intimate Partner Violence on College Campuses\"\r\n\r\nMedia coverage of sexual assault on college campuses has resulted in an uprising of social media campaigns and student activism. The student-led movement has called for extensive policy changes in higher education. However, intimate partner violence (IPV), has fallen to the margins and not received the same attention. Consequently, the survivor-centered movement and policy changes have centered the experiences of only a certain type of survivor, making it difficult for IPV survivors to seek justice and support from their institutions. Furthermore, the movement has largely failed to take into account the intersections of social identity and how marginalized social identities are accounted for within school policies and services. In this thesis, the experiences of college student survivors of IPV are centered and their experiences with whom they have worked with and sought support from are examined intersectionally, both in experience and identity. The purpose of qualitative interviews with student IPV survivors (n=24) is to better understand their experiences receiving services from their schools and working within these systems. Of the 24 students interviewed, 18 did not receive the help or support that they needed from their school. Based on their experiences, this thesis argues that within intersectional theory both identities and experiences are marginalized within the violence prevention movement. Not only is monogamy a deeply ingrained norm, it is tied closely to personal identity. This thesis explores the experiences of individuals who depart from this pervasive norm. Two overarching questions guide this exploration: 1) How do college students talk about their non-monogamous relationships?; and 2) What factors contribute to a college student\u2019s decision to pursue such a relationship? For the first question, I focus on how non-monogamous individuals approach labeling their relationship, as well as if they describe their non-monogamy to be an innate characteristic or a personal choice. In answering the second question, I describe the impacts of the social pressure of monogamy, the role of gender, and the present day context of dating and hook-up culture on college students\u2019 decisions to be in a non-monogamous relationship. James\u2019 Fifty Shades of Grey was due to the book\u2019s erotic rendering of a largely heteronormative tale of taboo sexual encounters. This book created a unique space for women in the United States to question their own sexuality and specifically, their sexual agency. In The Agency Line: A Neoliberal Metric for Appraising Young Women\u2019s Sexuality, Laina Bay-Chang defines sexual agency as the neoliberal imperative to make choices about ones sexual agency. Through Chang\u2019s model, the paradoxical understanding of sexual agency highlights the performative nature of hegemonic femininity and traditional gender roles in America that are enacted by main characters, Christian and Anastasia while engaging in BDSM. This thesis offers a detailed literary analysis of the text in relation to textual consumerism and fandom, the question of sexual agency more generally, and what it means to obtain sexual agency through reading practices in 2016. Should candidates try to persuade \u0093swing\u0094 voters or mobilize their \u0093base\u0094? We present a model that can address these and related questions in a single unifi\u0085ed framework. We relate electoral strategies to the characteristics of voting groups, with the answers to these questions sometimes being surprising. We show how a candidate may have different ways of winning for given characteristics of the electoral population, with possible \u0093discontinuities \u0094in electoral positions that win elections.
