It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes, ancient and modern, and in a number of different languages.\r\n\r\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. We first present a simple model of asymmetric fiscal competition where rent-maximizing jurisdictions compete for mobile labor. The model predicts that under fiscal competition, the less productive jurisdictions would provide a higher level of public good (\u201ctame Leviathan\u201d) and have a lower level of population outflow (under migration); as compared to under fiscal coordination where a social planner makes a joint decision for multiple jurisdictions. In a novel empirical setting created by the combination of two national programs in China, the \u201cRural School Consolidation\u201d program and the \u201cSpecial Economic Zones (SEZs)\u201d program, spatially adjacent townships have discontinuous incentives to compete\\coordinate with a neighboring SEZ. We exploit such quasi-experimental variation using a spatial discontinuity design, and find that those townships who compete with a SEZ provide more primary schools and have a lower level of population outflow, as compared to those who coordinate, consistent with our theoretical propositions. Katchadourian considers the ongoing quandary of where we really come from, who we are, trying to isolate our sense of ourselves in counterpoint with the way people define or judge us based upon their assumptions. It is, of course, the unique combination of things that offers our most comprehensive and authentic self-reflection, not one thing or another, and this amalgamation is to some degree indecipherable.\r\n\r\n\r\nAlthough they have lived in the United States for over 45 years, Katchadourian\u2019s foreign-born parents both have distinctive but hard-to-place accents that the artist has never been able to imitate correctly. Inspired by posters around New York advertising courses in \u201caccent elimination,\u201d Katchadourian decided to hire a professional who could teach her to speak in each of her parents\u2019 accents and teach them to speak with a so-called \u201cstandard American accent.\u201d Katchadourian and her parents took intensive lessons with accent coach Sam Chwat at his office every other day for several weeks, and also practiced in the artist\u2019s studio between lessons. They worked with two scripts: one written by her mother and the other by her father, both modeled on the typical conversation that each of them has when talking with a stranger who notices an accent and is curious about its origins.\r\n\r\nKatchadourian plays the part of the stranger. The dialogues are first performed in everyone\u2019s natural accents, then at the end of the piece, after much practice and struggle, they attempt to perform the\r\nsame scripts\u2014in the best version they can muster\u2014of their new accents.\r\n\r\nIn light of recent and all-too-familiar seismic political shifts consumed with \u201cotherness,\u201d and building walls rather than bringing them down, Accent Elimination feels especially prescient. It reminds us there\r\nare so many layers that comprise our cultural identities, stacked up like markers, artifacts of our points of origin as well as our extraordinary journeys. It is an ongoing and painstaking process as to what we save and what we lose along the way by choice, necessity, or circumstance. And in all of this, perhaps we discover ourselves on common ground.\r\n\r\nAccent Elimination was included at the 2015 Venice Biennale in the Armenian pavilion, which won the Golden Lion for Best National Participation. Oscillating between analog methods (ink, paint, tape) and digital processes (scanning, photoshop filtering, milling), this project intensifies attributes of drawing otherwise lost in translation. A series of 1:1 investigations harnesses the potency of these effects and uses them to emphasize, deemphasize, or reconstitute existing architectural conditions. From its most primitive and revered \u201corigins,\u201d architecture was rehearsed in environments of conflict. As an alternative to the term defense architecture, a category which typically refers to forms and types (fortresses, citadels, bastions, urban walls), this project proposes the idea of an architecture of defense. An architecture of defense sees all of architecture as a reaction to some measure of paranoia and studies the built environment to recognize measures and methods used to subdue these fears. Safety Not Guaranteed explores the architecture of paranoia through a series of design manipulations and exaggerations. Oberdick Fellow\r\n\r\nFor the Trees\r\nAt first I noticed how naked the papers were, since they didn\u2019t seem to be acting like something else. I guess they were supposed to be models, it was an architecture exhibit after all, but they were missing all those things that point elsewhere: no doors, no windows, nothing that particularly looks like anything but itself. They were formed, sure, but that\u2019s not really enough to point outwards. Or is it? Before you answer, there was one more thing: some of the papers were near an enlarged duplicate. Actually, maybe they were shrunken copies. It was a lot like that moment at the top of Runyon Canyon when you turn around and realize there\u2019s an entire other, slightly smaller Los Angeles behind you. Were you just looking at the original, or the copy? I think the most interesting part is right afterwards when your focus shifts around you to the ground, the dirt, the trees.. all that stuff that frames what you\u2019re looking at, like the base of a model or scale figures or model trees. Come to think of it, the papers did look like trees. But the resemblance is fleeting, and now I\u2019m certain the papers were in fact models pointing around at each other. Julius Caesar, Cicero, Augustus, and Nero all owned villas in this region. With more than 200 objects on loan from Italy, the exhibition focuses on two structures at Oplontis that were buried when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. One is an enormous luxury villa that may once have belonged to the family of Nero\u2019s second wife Poppaea. The other is a nearby commercial-residential complex\u2014a center for the trade in wine and other produce of villa lands. Together these two establishments speak eloquently of the ways in which the Roman elite built, maintained, and displayed their vast wealth, political power, and social prestige. In presenting a selection of impressive works of art along with ordinary utilitarian objects, the exhibition also calls attention to Roman disparities of wealth, social class, and consumption. Such disparities were as problematic for Roman society as they are for ours today.\r\n\r\nThis exhibition in Ann Arbor will remain open to the public until May 15, 2016. Ignoring these selection effects might attenuate effect estimates, leading to settings in which exposures that shorten survival may appear to have little or no negative effects among observed survivors. For example, if those who experience rapid declines in wealth (\u201cwealth shock\u201d) later in life are both more likely to die at a younger age and have poorer health, the effect of wealth shock on self-reported health may be underestimated in the elderly.\r\n\r\nIn longitudinal studies, an increasingly common approach to deal with this selection issue is to estimate inverse probability weights (IPW) that \u201cweight up\u201d study persons remaining in the sample in proportion to their probability of death at a given wave of observation. This creates an \u201cimmortal\u201d counterfactual population that, in many clinical and policy settings, is arguably not a sensible target of inference. A perhaps better alternative is to go the other direction and use the concept of principal stratification to target inference to the set of persons who would survive under all of the potential exposures under a comparison of interest (survivor average causal effects or SACEs). Recent work in marginal structural modeling has focused on developing methods to obtain unbiased SACE estimators by adapting marginal structural model weights to break the relationship between survival and exposure at each follow-up wave. I will discuss an alternative multiple imputation approach to generate counterfactual predictive distributions of principal strata to estimate SACEs.
