Oscillating between analog methods (ink, paint, tape) and digital processes (scanning, photoshop filtering, milling), this project intensifies attributes of drawing otherwise lost in translation. A series of 1:1 investigations harnesses the potency of these effects and uses them to emphasize, deemphasize, or reconstitute existing architectural conditions. From its most primitive and revered \u201corigins,\u201d architecture was rehearsed in environments of conflict. As an alternative to the term defense architecture, a category which typically refers to forms and types (fortresses, citadels, bastions, urban walls), this project proposes the idea of an architecture of defense. An architecture of defense sees all of architecture as a reaction to some measure of paranoia and studies the built environment to recognize measures and methods used to subdue these fears. Safety Not Guaranteed explores the architecture of paranoia through a series of design manipulations and exaggerations. Oberdick Fellow\r\n\r\nFor the Trees\r\nAt first I noticed how naked the papers were, since they didn\u2019t seem to be acting like something else. I guess they were supposed to be models, it was an architecture exhibit after all, but they were missing all those things that point elsewhere: no doors, no windows, nothing that particularly looks like anything but itself. They were formed, sure, but that\u2019s not really enough to point outwards. Or is it? Before you answer, there was one more thing: some of the papers were near an enlarged duplicate. Actually, maybe they were shrunken copies. It was a lot like that moment at the top of Runyon Canyon when you turn around and realize there\u2019s an entire other, slightly smaller Los Angeles behind you. Were you just looking at the original, or the copy? I think the most interesting part is right afterwards when your focus shifts around you to the ground, the dirt, the trees.. all that stuff that frames what you\u2019re looking at, like the base of a model or scale figures or model trees. Come to think of it, the papers did look like trees. But the resemblance is fleeting, and now I\u2019m certain the papers were in fact models pointing around at each other. No tickets are required. \r\n\r\nThe LSO is made up of dozens of members of the U-M medical and scientific community, and the concert will conclude the orchestra\u2019s 16th season of blending science and music.\r\n\r\nMusic director Roberto Kalb will give a pre-concert talk at 3:15 p.m. in the lower level of the building to help audience members get the most out of the performance. \r\n\r\nOpera for all\r\n\r\nFor the concert-style performance of La Boh\u00e8me\u2019s most upbeat act, Kalb will lead the LSO and vocal soloists to evoke the story of Parisian bohemians in the 1830s. In addition to his role with the LSO, Kalb is an experienced opera conductor, both at U-M and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. \r\n\r\nThe lively and witty lyrics, sung in Italian, will be projected in English, making the performance accessible even to those who have never seen an opera. \r\n\r\nThe vocal talent assembled for the performance includes up-and-coming singers Ann Toomey as Mimi, Joshua Wheeker as Rodolfo, Zachary Crowle as Marcello, Michael Miller as Schaunard, and Glenn Healy as Colline. Special guest Stephen West, chair of the Department of Voice at the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance, will sing the part of the bohemians\u2019 landlord Benoit.\r\n\r\nThe concert\u2019s second half will begin with Poulenc\u2019s moving piece for organ, strings and timpani, composed in the 1930s. Soloist Naki Sung Kripfgans, a prominent organist and winner of the LSO Concerto Competition, will perform on Hill Auditorium\u2019s legendary Frieze Memorial Organ. \r\n\r\nThe performance will conclude with Gershwin\u2019s Jazz Age masterpiece, a symphonic poem that traces the adventures of an American strolling through the city -- and feeling homesick as well.
