Throughout modernity, artists have sought inventive ways to free painting from its tradition as a representational medium. Because the work evolves based on whatever content is available online at any given moment, the artist relinquishes a certain degree of creative control. It explores the staging and costuming of productions such as Charles Kean\u2019s archaeologically-informed, elaborately-costumed 1856 production of The Winter\u2019s Tale, and Maurice Browne-Ellen Van Volkenburg 1930 production of Othello casting Paul Robeson as the first black actor to play Othello in a century.\r\n\r\nMost of the titles included in this display come from the McMillan Shakespeare Library. Materials are also displayed from the Maurice Browne and Ellen Van Volkenburg Papers, 1792-1968 and the Zelma Weisfeld Archive, 1954-2006.
