The exhibit, featuring 29 Haggadahs from the Irwin M. Alterman Haggadah Collection, will be on display through July. It includes Haggadahs of various shapes and sizes, ancient and modern, and in a number of different languages.\r\n\r\nThe Alterman collection was acquired by the University of Michigan Library last year with the help of the Frankel Center, and is housed in the Special Collections Library of the Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library. It includes more than 1,800 Haggadahs and is believed to be one of the largest Haggadah collections in the world. In adult metazoans, most differentiated cells have completed proliferation and lie in a quiescent state, also termed cell cycle exit. The decision to proliferate or enter quiescence is essential during development and its dysregulation may lead to defects in organogenesis, wounding healing and regeneration as well as tumor formation. However, at what stage of the cell cycle the decision occurs and what molecular mechanisms control this decision remain controversial. \r\nIn my thesis work, I have revealed a novel role for Protein Phosphatase 2A (PP2A) complex in promoting the transition to quiescence during tissue development in vivo. Using Drosophila eyes and wings as a model, I found that compromising PP2A activity during the final cell cycle prior to a developmentally controlled cell cycle exit leads to extra cell divisions and delayed entry into quiescence. By systematically testing the regulatory subunits of Drosophila PP2A, I discovered that the B56 family member widerborst (wdb) is required for the role of PP2A in promoting the transition to quiescence. In particular, PP2A\/B56 complex targets cyclin-dependent kinase 2 several hours after mitosis to promote cells entry into quiescence, indicating when the decision occurs and how PP2A impacts the decision.\r\nIn the other half of my thesis work, I investigated the dynamic features of the proliferation-quiescence transition with the application of a novel fluorescent cell cycle reporter and time-lapse, live-cell imaging in a mammalian cell population. By monitoring the proliferation-quiescence transition, I discovered that the quiescent state is quite heterogeneous. I found that mammalian cells can enter into either a transient or long quiescent state after mitosis, prior to the next round of cell cycle even under conditions of abundant nutrients. Notably, I discovered that two sister cells born of the same mitosis often make heterogeneous cell cycle decisions, with one cell entering long-term quiescence while the other re-enters the cell cycle for the next round of division. Consistent with my work in Drosophila model, PP2A in mammals plays a conserved role in promoting the entry into quiescence. Bennett All-Camp Lecture in Mycology and Plant Biology\r\n\r\nUrban, suburban and exurban ecosystems are important and increasing in the U.S. Homogenization, where neighborhoods in very different parts of the country have similar patterns of land use and aquatic features involves ecological structure and functions relevant to soil and ecosystem carbon and nitrogen dynamics, with continental scale implications. Using datasets ranging from household surveys to regional-scale remote sensing across six metropolitan statistical areas, Dr. Peter Groffman is determining how household characteristics correlate with landscaping decisions, land management practices and ecological structure and functions at local, regional and continental scales.\r\n\r\nWatersheds are a natural (and well-used) physical unit for bio-geo-chemical research and can also function as a focus for human-environment interactions. Suburban watershed input\/output budgets for nitrogen (N) have shown surprisingly high retention which has led to detailed analysis of sources and sinks in these watersheds. Home lawns have more complex coupled carbon and N dynamics than previously thought. And riparian zones have turned out be N sources rather than sinks in urban watersheds. Geomorphic stream restoration can increase in-stream retention by creating features with high denitrification potential. Considering the \u201chuman element\u201d in these biogeochemical source and sink processes is critical to improving the environmental performance of urban and suburban ecosystems. \r\n\r\nDr. Peter M. Groffman is a Professor at the City University of New York Advanced Science Research Center and Brooklyn College. His research interests are in ecosystem, soil, landscape and microbial ecology, with a focus on carbon and nitrogen dynamics. Groffman is chair of the Executive Board of the U.S. National Science Foundation funded Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) network Science Council and a participant in LTER projects in Baltimore (urban) and New Hampshire (northern hardwood forests).
