Sanders Fellow, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, U-M; Watercolors by Grace Mahoney, doctoral student in Slavic languages and literatures, U-M.\r\n\r\nIn this exhibition, artists Bigham and Mahoney investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine\u2019s older generation of women\u2014embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous, the babusya. Seen in public transport, in the market, and on the street, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say, something to gossip about, and something to complain about. The current generation of Ukrainian grandmothers survived World War II, the Holodomor, and multiple repressions. They are also active in the present\u2014although civic activism is often thought to be the province of the young, many babusya joined in the actions of Ukraine\u2019s Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv and throughout the country. Now they witness the war in Eastern Ukraine. Many of them have lost their homes and some of them have lost their children or grandchildren. The generation called, \u201cThe Children of War\u201d are now seniors of war. \r\n \r\nIn addition to their historic significance as a generation, these women are present in the spheres of daily life throughout the country. Possibly overlooked in society, these women are vibrant and active in the public spaces of contemporary Ukraine. Working in the open-air bazaars, resting on public park benches, or strolling through cemeteries, these women stake their claim on the urban space\u2014blending, coalescing, disappearing. This exhibit endeavors to tell the stories of these grannies. It\u2019s an invitation to look closer, to see the stories which are written on their faces \u2013 they are old and tired, but not invisible. \r\n \r\nAshley Bigham is a lecturer and the 2015-2016 Walter B. Sanders Fellow at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Prior to her appointment at Taubman College, Ashley was a Fulbright Fellow in Lviv, Ukraine, researching and teaching at the Center of Urban History of East Central Europe. Bigham holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee. \r\n \r\nGrace Mahoney is a Ph.D. student in Slavic Languages and Literatures. In 2014-15 she lived in Ukraine on a U.S. Student Fulbright fellowship and interned with the Revolution of Dignity Museum in Kyiv in summer 2016. She has Bachelor's degrees in Visual Art and English Literature from Seattle University. It intends to engage the campus and Ann Arbor community with national and international graffiti artists and their work, offering a global perspective of street art and its importance as a part of public space and discourse within the public sphere. \r\n\r\nThe Greek capital of Athens is a vibrant cultural hot spot as a result of the financial crisis. Some are calling it the New Berlin, as the next generation of artists and designers are turning to the streets to express social messages. \r\n\r\nGreek Artists Olga Alexopoulou and Cacao Rocks will be painting murals on the building fa\u00e7ade at Washington and North State. Alexopoulou\u2019s graphic figurative work and Rocks' vibrant cubist influenced imagery represent the diversity of expression in the Greek street art scene.\r\n\r\nThe project also includes exhibitions, and public lectures and discussions, all free and open to the public.\r\n\r\nAbout the artist: Olga Alexopoulou, [Athenian born 1980], graduate of the Ruskin School of Art of Oxford University. In the last years her works have been exhibited in museums like Nigbo in China and her solo show in the Ethnological Museum of Thrace, her latest solo exhibition at the Museum of Spyros Vasiliou in Athens, but also in galleries around the world. Olga was \u2018Artist in Spotlight\u2019 for 2014 at the International Exhibition Tio Ilar Athens and was chosen to represent Greece in the global graffiti event 'She's a Leader' by Women's Forum. This talk excavates the butcher\u2019s philosophy of the twentieth century and its consequences for the chemical landscapes of life in the twenty-first century. The history of medicated feed for animals in the twentieth century has traditionally been seen as a rather specialized corner of agricultural history: the story of how antibiotics, arsenicals, hormones, and vitamins were used to grow animals to market size earlier with less feed is an important part of the industrialization of American food systems. Yet it is also the history of a major re-articulation of the metabolic interrelations of bacteria, fungi, plants, animals, and humans, in which flows of enzymes, amino acids, and secondary metabolites between organisms changed profoundly. She currently serves as President of the Skoll Global Threats Fund, mobilizing innovative approaches that address the most critical threats of our time.\r\n\r\nShe joined Skoll Global Threats in 2010, as Chief Operating Officer, after serving as a White House Fellow in the Office of Vice President Biden, where she focused on the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.\r\n\r\nFrom 2002 to 2009, Annie was with Direct Relief, ultimately serving as the organization's Chief Operating Officer. Direct Relief is a humanitarian aid organization, active in all 50 states and 70 countries, with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies. From 2005 to 2006, Annie was seconded to the United Nation\u2019s Office of the Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery, led by Special Envoy President Bill Clinton. There, she served as Partnerships and Outreach Officer, focusing on environmental issues and the role of NGOs in the recovery effort.\r\n\r\nAnnie is currently a board member of Muso, an NGO whose mission it is to eliminate preventable deaths in the world\u2019s most impoverished communities. The switch, along with a combination of other factors, corrupted the city\u2019s water supply infrastructure of old lead pipes and dumped lead into the drinking water.
