Sanders Fellow, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, U-M; Watercolors by Grace Mahoney, doctoral student in Slavic languages and literatures, U-M.\r\n\r\nIn this exhibition, artists Bigham and Mahoney investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine\u2019s older generation of women\u2014embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous, the babusya. Seen in public transport, in the market, and on the street, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say, something to gossip about, and something to complain about. The current generation of Ukrainian grandmothers survived World War II, the Holodomor, and multiple repressions. They are also active in the present\u2014although civic activism is often thought to be the province of the young, many babusya joined in the actions of Ukraine\u2019s Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv and throughout the country. Now they witness the war in Eastern Ukraine. Many of them have lost their homes and some of them have lost their children or grandchildren. The generation called, \u201cThe Children of War\u201d are now seniors of war. \r\n \r\nIn addition to their historic significance as a generation, these women are present in the spheres of daily life throughout the country. Possibly overlooked in society, these women are vibrant and active in the public spaces of contemporary Ukraine. Working in the open-air bazaars, resting on public park benches, or strolling through cemeteries, these women stake their claim on the urban space\u2014blending, coalescing, disappearing. This exhibit endeavors to tell the stories of these grannies. It\u2019s an invitation to look closer, to see the stories which are written on their faces \u2013 they are old and tired, but not invisible. \r\n \r\nAshley Bigham is a lecturer and the 2015-2016 Walter B. Sanders Fellow at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Prior to her appointment at Taubman College, Ashley was a Fulbright Fellow in Lviv, Ukraine, researching and teaching at the Center of Urban History of East Central Europe. Bigham holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee. \r\n \r\nGrace Mahoney is a Ph.D. student in Slavic Languages and Literatures. In 2014-15 she lived in Ukraine on a U.S. Student Fulbright fellowship and interned with the Revolution of Dignity Museum in Kyiv in summer 2016. She has Bachelor's degrees in Visual Art and English Literature from Seattle University. It intends to engage the campus and Ann Arbor community with national and international graffiti artists and their work, offering a global perspective of street art and its importance as a part of public space and discourse within the public sphere. \r\n\r\nThe Greek capital of Athens is a vibrant cultural hot spot as a result of the financial crisis. Some are calling it the New Berlin, as the next generation of artists and designers are turning to the streets to express social messages. \r\n\r\nGreek Artists Olga Alexopoulou and Cacao Rocks will be painting murals on the building fa\u00e7ade at Washington and North State. Alexopoulou\u2019s graphic figurative work and Rocks' vibrant cubist influenced imagery represent the diversity of expression in the Greek street art scene.\r\n\r\nThe project also includes exhibitions, and public lectures and discussions, all free and open to the public.\r\n\r\nAbout the artist: Olga Alexopoulou, [Athenian born 1980], graduate of the Ruskin School of Art of Oxford University. In the last years her works have been exhibited in museums like Nigbo in China and her solo show in the Ethnological Museum of Thrace, her latest solo exhibition at the Museum of Spyros Vasiliou in Athens, but also in galleries around the world. Olga was \u2018Artist in Spotlight\u2019 for 2014 at the International Exhibition Tio Ilar Athens and was chosen to represent Greece in the global graffiti event 'She's a Leader' by Women's Forum. Since then this pediatrician has devoted much of her practice to the evaluation of the impact of this lead exposure. Interventions will include maternal and infant support, improved pre-school and school health services as well as nutrition services. She will identify and discuss the problems that these children face and suggest some solutions to address these problems. Pre-registration highly recommended.\r\n\r\n This is the firstin the series of nine Distinguished Lectures. The next lecture in the series will be October 11, 2016. Ex-ante forward, guaranteed contracts can reduce uncertainty for migrants. I combine aspects of the two and ask, how does origin-market uncertainty affect out-migration under forward contracts? I model migration under forward contracts and then turn to new, unique microdata on roughly 250,000 Indian indentured servants sent around the world under forward contracts. The migration decision is consistent with migrating to escape price volatility (my main measure of uncertainty). A one-standard deviation increase in price volatility increases extensive margin migration by 2% and the intensive margin by 5%. I find compositional differences by social network (caste), with networks responding differently to volatility. Lower-caste people respond more to prices, wages, and volatility, and higher-caste people are more able to smooth against volatility. This is suggestive of caste-specific insurance networks. Finally, volatility exerts a persistent negative effect on the return migration choice. In this presentation, Professor Zou will delve into Du Liniang\u2019s character, a woman who lived under the extremely strict constraint on her living space and spiritual world, both from ideological pressure and constraints on her body. In particular, the ability to fabricate heterostructures between different 2D materials allows for designer condensed matter systems. In this talk, I will discuss our latest experimental progress on three different types of van der Waals heterostructures. I will first talk about interlayer excitons in semiconductor heterobilayers, which are analogous to spatially indirect excitons in double quantum wells, but with additional valley pseudospin properties. I will then discuss interlayer electron-phonon interactions in heterostructures formed by monolayer WSe\u00ac2 and atomically thin boron nitride, in which a Raman silent phonon in boron nitride is activated by resonantly coupling to the electronic states in WSe2. Finally, I will conclude with a discussion of heterostructures formed by a monolayer semiconductor and a layered ferromagnetic semiconductor, a new system for controlling spin and pseudospin in 2D semiconductors by magnetic proximity effect.\r\n\r\nBio: Xiaodong Xu is a Boeing Distinguished Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Washington. He is currently working on further books on the receptions of Horace and Apuleius. He is very interested in how Classics is taught and researched elsewhere in the world. Outside his tutorial duties (still very much the core of what he does) he has been a visiting lecturer in five continents, makes regular visits to North America and Italy, has recently become more involved in classics in Malta, Brazil and Japan, and worked for some years on collaborative Latin commentary projects in the Netherlands and Germany; We demonstrate that we can use emerging, large-scale time-series data from modern sensors to directly construct, in an adaptive manner, governing equations, even nonlinear dynamics, that best model the system measured using sparsity-promoting techniques. Recent innovations also allow for handling multi-scale physics phenomenon and control protocols in an adaptive and robust way. The overall architecture is equation-free in that the dynamics and control protocols are discovered directly from data acquired from sensors. The theory developed is demonstrated on a number of example problems. Ultimately, the method can be used to construct adaptive controllers which are capable of obtaining and maintaining optimal states while the machine learning and sparse sensing techniques characterize the system itself for rapid state identification and improved optimization.
