SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition. Invisible Women: Portraits of Aging in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Photography by Ashley Bigham\, 2015-16 Walter B. Sanders Fellow\, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, U-M\; Watercolors by Grace Mahoney\, doctoral student in Slavic languages and literatures\, U-M.\n\nIn this exhibition\, artists Bigham and Mahoney investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine’s older generation of women—embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous\, the babusya. Seen in public transport\, in the market\, and on the street\, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say\, something to gossip about\, and something to complain about. The current generation of Ukrainian grandmothers survived World War II\, the Holodomor\, and multiple repressions. They are also active in the present—although civic activism is often thought to be the province of the young\, many babusya joined in the actions of Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv and throughout the country. Now they witness the war in Eastern Ukraine. Many of them have lost their homes and some of them have lost their children or grandchildren. The generation called\, “The Children of War” are now seniors of war. \n \nIn addition to their historic significance as a generation\, these women are present in the spheres of daily life throughout the country. Possibly overlooked in society\, these women are vibrant and active in the public spaces of contemporary Ukraine. Working in the open-air bazaars\, resting on public park benches\, or strolling through cemeteries\, these women stake their claim on the urban space—blending\, coalescing\, disappearing. This exhibit endeavors to tell the stories of these grannies. It’s an invitation to look closer\, to see the stories which are written on their faces – they are old and tired\, but not invisible. \n \nAshley Bigham is a lecturer and the 2015-2016 Walter B. Sanders Fellow at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Prior to her appointment at Taubman College\, Ashley was a Fulbright Fellow in Lviv\, Ukraine\, researching and teaching at the Center of Urban History of East Central Europe. Bigham holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee. \n \nGrace Mahoney is a Ph.D. student in Slavic Languages and Literatures. In 2014-15 she lived in Ukraine on a U.S. Student Fulbright fellowship and interned with the Revolution of Dignity Museum in Kyiv in summer 2016. She has Bachelor's degrees in Visual Art and English Literature from Seattle University. Her work from this show was originally shown in the exhibition Portraits of the Unlost at America House in Kyiv in summer 2015. \n \nAn artists’ talk will be held from 4-5:30 pm on Friday\, September 23 in 1636 SSWB.\n\nExhibition sponsors: Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies\; A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning\; Women's Studies Department\; Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Catie Newell: Overnight
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Mexico’s Poet of Light
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mira Henry: The View Inside
DESCRIPTION:Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles\, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect\, immersed in the everyday\, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings\, material specs\, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. Her projects explore how these features animate our subjective experience—what she calls our “shifting fantasies”—of architectural space.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink
DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CREES Noon Lecture. The Past\, Present and Future of Disability Rights in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:In her 2011 book Disability and Mobile Citizenship in Postsocialist Ukraine (Indiana U Press)\, Phillips documented some of the significant strides that the disability rights movement in contemporary Ukraine has made in securing rights and recognition for people with disabilities. She argued that by mobilizing a set of narratives that emphasize both socialist-era attention to collectivism\, entitlements and state support\, as well as more individualist\, consumer-based narratives privileging self-sufficiency\, people with disabilities in postsocialist societies such as Ukraine are enacting a new kind of “mobile citizenship” to create and access opportunities for rehabilitation\, education\, and employment. \n \n How have disability rights changed during the last 5-10 years in Ukraine? What effects have the Ukrainian (Maidan) revolution of 2014-15 and the ongoing war in eastern Ukraine had on the disability rights movement\, especially with thousands of veterans with disabilities returning from the front? What might the future of disability rights in Ukraine look like? \n \n In this lecture Phillips considers how recent events have impacted disability rights initiatives in Ukraine by tracking the ongoing life trajectories of the “heroes” of her 2011 book—men and women living with serious physical disabilities—to ask whether people with disabilities in Ukraine are still “mobile citizens” making successful claims for individual and collective rights in a war-torn country in deep economic\, social and political crisis. \n \n Sarah D. Phillips is professor of anthropology and director of the Russian and East European Institute (REEI) at Indiana University. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2002. Her research specialties are in gender\, health\, disability\, social movements\, and identity politics in the former Soviet Union\, especially Ukraine. Phillips has published two books with Indiana University Press\, Women’s Social Activism in the New Ukraine: Development and the Politics of Differentiation (2008) and Disability and Mobile Citizenship in Postsocialist Ukraine (2011). She is currently co-investigator on a collaborative four-year research project at the intersection of anthropology and public health called “A Novel\, Bottom-up Approach to HIV prevention among Injecting Drug Users in Ukraine.” Phillips teaches courses in the Anthropology of Russia and East Europe\, Postsocialist Gender Formations\, and Medical Anthropology\, as well as the REEI MA Capstone seminar. \n \n Part of the Minorities series which will focus on the fates and challenges various minorities face\, from ethnic and racial groups to people with disabilities and members of LGBT communities. How do different political regimes come to define groups as minorities\, and how do they engage with them as a result? What can the experience of minorities in the other parts of the world teach us?

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Removed
DESCRIPTION:Removed (2016) explores processes of progressive translation\, abstraction and distortion. Musical improvisation is captured as choreographic experience\, then encoded into digital animation and 3D-printed sculptural forms. The performances are transformed by their conversion into visual media: sound is removed\, movement is abstracted from human anatomy into non-representational geometry\, and time is rendered as space. Removed creates a dialogue between the intuitive and the formalized\, and invites questions about the nature of translation and the absences it conceals.\n\nJoin us for an exhibit reception on Tuesday\, September 13th.\n\nChristopher Burns is a composer\, improviser\, and multimedia artist whose works explore collage\, layering\, and the use of generative algorithms to form and develop both musical and visual elements. His work creates a dialogue between complexity and clarity\, incorporating densely braided\, rapidly shifting materials alongside gradually evolving\, linearly directed textures. He is currently scholar-in-residence at the Digital Media Commons.

SUMMARY:Presentation:The Emergence of Human Cooperation: Evidence from Children and Chimpanzees
DESCRIPTION:Cooperation is a hallmark of human social life\, spanning from simple acts of helping individuals to collaborative acts in which teams achieve outcomes that no single individual could achieve alone. However\, the origins of these behaviors are unclear. Are humans initially driven by purely selfish motives and must be taught to be cooperative? Or do we have a biological predisposition for cooperation? How do humans learn to share a common resource according to what’s ‘fair’? \nI will present a framework that derives hypotheses about the critical proximate mechanisms supporting cooperation from evolutionary theory. I propose that for cooperation to evolve\, individuals have to possess two distinct sets of psychological skills: the ability to identify and create opportunities for cooperative interactions with others (creating benefit) and mechanisms to solve the free-rider problem to sustain cooperation as a viable strategy (distributing benefit). \nTo evaluate this framework\, I will present empirical studies with children examining how these two sets of skills develop over childhood. In particular\, while young children already possess basic skills to help others and share valuable resources\, social norms and social experience begin to influence children’s cooperation in later ontogeny. These results are complemented by studies with chimpanzees to illuminate the extent to which these abilities are unique to humans\, or shared with our evolutionary relatives. I conclude with a proposal of how this framework motivates new developmental\, comparative\, and cross-cultural research to shed light on the ontogenetic and phylogenetic roots of the psychological abilities underpinning human cooperation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Quantum Phase Transitions: A New Approach From Adiabatic Continuity and Wavefunction Overlap
DESCRIPTION:In quantum many-body systems\, quantum phase transitions are among the most fascinating phenomena. In general\, quantum phase transitions can be classified into two categories: (1) conventional and (2) topological. Conventional quantum phase transitions are the quantum generalization of thermal phase transitions. Similar to their classical counterparts\, they are characterized by spontaneous symmetry breaking. A topological phase transition doesn’t have any symmetry breaking. Instead\, it is the singular point where the quantum wavefunction changes its topology. In comparison to conventional phase transitions\, our knowledge on topological phase transitions are much more limited. In fact\, we don’t even have a general recipe yet to determine whether two quantum states have the same topology or not\, and a complete and constraint-free classification of topological states is still absent. As a step toward this ultimate goal\, we prove a general theorem: for two arbitrary quantum states\, as long as the inner product between the two wavefunctions is nonzero\, there exists an adiabatic path connecting the two quantum states. This theorem can be utilized to study all topological phase transitions in non-interacting or weakly-correlated systems\, as well as certain strongly-correlated systems. For topological phase transitions\, our theorem implies that two quantum states with finite wavefunction inner product must belong to the same quantum phase and thus have exactly the same topological structure. We will further discussion how this theorem can help us understand the classification of topological states\, as well as its implications in experiments.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Financial/Actuarial Mathematics
DESCRIPTION:In the smallest filtration with respect to which a given random time is a stopping time\, we represent and characterize local martingales and semimartingales. We then provide necessary and sufficient conditions on the representation of such a semimartingale such that the absence of arbitrage conditions NA_+\, NA\, NUPBR\, or NFLVR hold. One direction of the proof involves explicit constructions of arbitrage opportunities and unbounded profits with bounded risk. The other direction employs a generalized Gronwall—Bellman inequality.\n\nThis talk is based on joint work in progress with Martin Herdegen (University of Warwick). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series | North Korea: The State Built by Narrative
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will address the decisive role played by narratives in the establishment of North Korea. The most notable of these narratives concerns the history of anti-Japanese armed struggle. Conferring a sense of sovereignty\, authenticity\, and legitimacy to the North Korean state\, anti-Japanese armed struggle has continued to serve as a rich source of nationalist lore and a highly effective vehicle for forging identity and unity. In fact\, it was by laying claim to this history and narrativizing it in specific ways that Kim Il-sung was able to transform national longing into personal charisma. Kim Il-sung will thus emerge in this presentation not merely as the represented hero of anti-Japanese armed struggle\, but as that narrative’s definitive author.\n\nHyungki Shin is a professor at the Department of Korean Language and Literature of Yonsei University in South Korea\, where he teaches Korean literature and history of modern Korean criticism.\n\nProfessor Shin has conducted research\, among other topics\, on Korean literature in the post-liberation period and on North Korean literature.\n\nHis publications include “A Study on Literary Movements after the Liberation of Korea” (1988) (Haebang chikhu ŭi munhak undongnon)\, “A Study on Stories in the Liberation Period” (Haebanggi sosŏl yŏn'gu) (1992)\, “Understanding North Korean Fiction” (Pukhan sosŏl ŭi ihae) (1996)\, “Transition and Fate” (Pyŏnhwa wa unmyŏng) (1997)\, “A History of North Korean Literature: From Anti-Japanese Revolutionary Literature to ‘Juche’ Literature” (Pukhan munhaksa : hangil hyŏngmyŏng munhak esŏ chuch'e munhak kkaji) (2000)\, “Fascism in Literature” (Munhak sok ŭi p'asijŭm) (2001)\, “Beyond Nation Narrative” (Minjok iyagi rŭl nŏmŏsŏ) (2003)\, “Narrated History―A Criticism on the Figure of History depicted by Narrative” (Iyagi toen yŏksa : Nam-Pukhan minjok iyagi ka kŭryŏnaen yŏksasang pip'an) (2005)\, “Records of Schizophrenia\; Re-reading Fictions Modernism from the Periphery” (Punyŏl ŭi kirok : chubyŏnbu modŏnijŭm sosŏl ŭl tasi ikta) (2010)\, “Narratives of the Age\, Age of Narratives” (Sidae ŭi iyagi\, iyagi ŭi sidae) (2015).

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:RTG Working Seminar on Geometry\, Dynamics and Topology
DESCRIPTION:A real projective structure on a compact manifold is a maximal atlas of charts whose images are in real projective space and whose transition functions are restrictions of projective transformations. In this talk I'll give an introduction to the Hilbert metric on a manifold with a real projective structure and give a number of applications. My plan is to first describe a theorem of Kobayashi which gives a sufficient condition for the developing map to be a diffeomorphism onto a convex domain. Then I plan on describing work of Benoist which gives further restrictions on the developing map when the fundamental group is Gromov hyperbolic. I will end the talk with some open questions. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Analysis/Probability
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this talk is to give a unified approach to the solutions of a class of isoperimetric problems by relating them to the exterior differential systems (EDS) studied by R. Bryant and P. Griffiths. It stayed largely unnoticed that one and the only PDE (but with different initial data) lies in the base of many classical isoperimetric inequalities. But more importantly\, by a funny change of variables (provided\, for example\, via EDS) this PDE can be made linear: namely\, the inverse heat equation. Then such classical inequalities as log-Sobolev\, Poincare\, Beckner--Sobolev\, Bobkov's inequality become particular solutions of this linear inverse heat equation. This observation allows us to invent many new isoperimetric inequalities (sharp of course) that are ``MORE sharp\" than the sharp classical ones. For example\, we improved the Beckner--Sobolev inequality\, and the talk will contain such an improvement for a particular exponent (where the new inequality looks especially nice). There are also other new isoperimetric inequalities in the paper having as CONSEQUENCES the classical ones. Our understanding is that the method of exterior differential systems (EDS) has been never used in any harmonic or geometric analysis inside the scope of our knowledge .\n(Joint work with Paata Ivanisvili). SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:\"Experimental Games: Affect\, Neoliberalism\, and Play\"
DESCRIPTION:The American Studies Consortium presents: a public lecture by Patrick Jagoda (UChicago)\n\nVideogames serve as a form for staging\, processing\, and testing reality and our experience of the historical present. In particular\, games belong to and complicate the experimental economy of the early twenty-first century. A central aspect of this economy has been the mobilization of forethought and forms of nonconscious cognition. How then can the non-conscious affects of games help us change conscious levels of human life\, such as critical thought\, judgment\, and ultimately action? In their interplay between rationality and affect\, videogames have a formidable concept-generating capacity. To demonstrate the possibilities and limits of this medium\, this talk ultimately turns to the case study of Anna Anthropy's Dys4ia: an autobiographical piece that uses game-specific elements such as unfair rules\, unsatisfying mechanics\, unattainable objectives\, and diverse avatars to convey the difficulties of transgender experience within heteronormative culture.\n \nPatrick Jagoda is associate professor of English and Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago. He is also a co-editor of Critical Inquiry and co-founder of the Game Changer Chicago Design Lab and the Transmedia Story Lab. Two of his books have been published in 2016: Network Aesthetics (University of Chicago Press) and The Game Worlds of Jason Rohrer (co-authored with Michael Maizels\, MIT Press). Jagoda has also worked on several projects related to digital storytelling\, transmedia game design\, and new media learning. For more information\, see: http://patrickjagoda.com/.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ethics Discussion Group Talk: From Moral Twin Earth to Pleasure in Eden
DESCRIPTION:Moral Twin Earth cases involve humans meeting aliens and disagreeing with them about moral questions. The causal theory of reference often used by naturalistic moral realists entails that such disagreement is impossible. To avoid this bad result\, I invoke the experientialist analysis of moral concepts\, on which they apply to objective properties represented by feelings like guilt\, horror\, and admiration. Combined with a new theory of reference based on empathy\, the experientialist analysis accounts for interplanetary disagreement and entails ethical hedonism.

DESCRIPTION:Since the group's inception in late 2007\, the Portland Cello Project (or\, PCP\, as their fans affectionately call them)\, has wowed audiences all over the country with extravagant performances\, everywhere from Prairie Home Companion\, to parties on loading docks in NYC\, to symphony halls from coast to coast\, to punk rock clubs.. The group has built a reputation mixing genres and blurring musical lines and perceptions wherever they go.\n\nNo two shows are alike\, with a repertoire now numbering over 1\,000 pieces of music both expected and unexpected to come from a cello. The Cello Project's stage setup ranges from the very simple (4-6 cellos)\, to the all out epic (which has included 12 cellos playing with full choirs\, winds\, horns\, and numerous percussion players).\n\nThe Cello Project works to build bridges across musical communities through collaborations and educational outreach. They have collaborated with a diverse assortment of musicians\, from high school and university music programs\, to the Dandy Warhols to Garrison Keillor to Trampled by Turtles to Corin Tucker to Maya Beiser to Ben Sollee to Zoe Keating to Howe Gelb\, just to name a few...
