Seen in public transport, in the market, and on the street, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say, something to gossip about, and something to complain about. The current generation of Ukrainian grandmothers survived World War II, the Holodomor, and multiple repressions. They are also active in the present\u2014although civic activism is often thought to be the province of the young, many babusya joined in the actions of Ukraine\u2019s Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv and throughout the country. Now they witness the war in Eastern Ukraine. Many of them have lost their homes and some of them have lost their children or grandchildren. The generation called, \u201cThe Children of War\u201d are now seniors of war. \r\n \r\nIn addition to their historic significance as a generation, these women are present in the spheres of daily life throughout the country. Possibly overlooked in society, these women are vibrant and active in the public spaces of contemporary Ukraine. Working in the open-air bazaars, resting on public park benches, or strolling through cemeteries, these women stake their claim on the urban space\u2014blending, coalescing, disappearing. This exhibit endeavors to tell the stories of these grannies. It\u2019s an invitation to look closer, to see the stories which are written on their faces \u2013 they are old and tired, but not invisible. \r\n \r\nAshley Bigham is a lecturer and the 2015-2016 Walter B. Sanders Fellow at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Prior to her appointment at Taubman College, Ashley was a Fulbright Fellow in Lviv, Ukraine, researching and teaching at the Center of Urban History of East Central Europe. Bigham holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee. \r\n \r\nGrace Mahoney is a Ph.D. student in Slavic Languages and Literatures. In 2014-15 she lived in Ukraine on a U.S. Student Fulbright fellowship and interned with the Revolution of Dignity Museum in Kyiv in summer 2016. She has Bachelor's degrees in Visual Art and English Literature from Seattle University. Alexopoulou\u2019s graphic figurative work and Rocks' vibrant cubist influenced imagery represent the diversity of expression in the Greek street art scene.\r\n\r\nThe project also includes exhibitions, and public lectures and discussions, all free and open to the public.\r\n\r\nAbout the artist: Olga Alexopoulou, [Athenian born 1980], graduate of the Ruskin School of Art of Oxford University. She argued that by mobilizing a set of narratives that emphasize both socialist-era attention to collectivism, entitlements and state support, as well as more individualist, consumer-based narratives privileging self-sufficiency, people with disabilities in postsocialist societies such as Ukraine are enacting a new kind of \u201cmobile citizenship\u201d to create and access opportunities for rehabilitation, education, and employment. \r\n \r\n How have disability rights changed during the last 5-10 years in Ukraine? What effects have the Ukrainian (Maidan) revolution of 2014-15 and the ongoing war in eastern Ukraine had on the disability rights movement, especially with thousands of veterans with disabilities returning from the front? What might the future of disability rights in Ukraine look like? \r\n \r\n In this lecture Phillips considers how recent events have impacted disability rights initiatives in Ukraine by tracking the ongoing life trajectories of the \u201cheroes\u201d of her 2011 book\u2014men and women living with serious physical disabilities\u2014to ask whether people with disabilities in Ukraine are still \u201cmobile citizens\u201d making successful claims for individual and collective rights in a war-torn country in deep economic, social and political crisis. \r\n \r\n Sarah D. Phillips is professor of anthropology and director of the Russian and East European Institute (REEI) at Indiana University. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2002. Her research specialties are in gender, health, disability, social movements, and identity politics in the former Soviet Union, especially Ukraine. Phillips has published two books with Indiana University Press, Women\u2019s Social Activism in the New Ukraine: Development and the Politics of Differentiation (2008) and Disability and Mobile Citizenship in Postsocialist Ukraine (2011). She is currently co-investigator on a collaborative four-year research project at the intersection of anthropology and public health called \u201cA Novel, Bottom-up Approach to HIV prevention among Injecting Drug Users in Ukraine.\u201d Phillips teaches courses in the Anthropology of Russia and East Europe, Postsocialist Gender Formations, and Medical Anthropology, as well as the REEI MA Capstone seminar. \r\n \r\n Part of the Minorities series which will focus on the fates and challenges various minorities face, from ethnic and racial groups to people with disabilities and members of LGBT communities. However, the origins of these behaviors are unclear. Are humans initially driven by purely selfish motives and must be taught to be cooperative? Or do we have a biological predisposition for cooperation? How do humans learn to share a common resource according to what\u2019s \u2018fair\u2019? \r\nI will present a framework that derives hypotheses about the critical proximate mechanisms supporting cooperation from evolutionary theory. I propose that for cooperation to evolve, individuals have to possess two distinct sets of psychological skills: the ability to identify and create opportunities for cooperative interactions with others (creating benefit) and mechanisms to solve the free-rider problem to sustain cooperation as a viable strategy (distributing benefit). \r\nTo evaluate this framework, I will present empirical studies with children examining how these two sets of skills develop over childhood. In particular, while young children already possess basic skills to help others and share valuable resources, social norms and social experience begin to influence children\u2019s cooperation in later ontogeny. These results are complemented by studies with chimpanzees to illuminate the extent to which these abilities are unique to humans, or shared with our evolutionary relatives. I conclude with a proposal of how this framework motivates new developmental, comparative, and cross-cultural research to shed light on the ontogenetic and phylogenetic roots of the psychological In general, quantum phase transitions can be classified into two categories: (1) conventional and (2) topological. Conventional quantum phase transitions are the quantum generalization of thermal phase transitions. Similar to their classical counterparts, they are characterized by spontaneous symmetry breaking. A topological phase transition doesn\u2019t have any symmetry breaking. Instead, it is the singular point where the quantum wavefunction changes its topology. In comparison to conventional phase transitions, our knowledge on topological phase transitions are much more limited. In fact, we don\u2019t even have a general recipe yet to determine whether two quantum states have the same topology or not, and a complete and constraint-free classification of topological states is still absent. As a step toward this ultimate goal, we prove a general theorem: for two arbitrary quantum states, as long as the inner product between the two wavefunctions is nonzero, there exists an adiabatic path connecting the two quantum states. This theorem can be utilized to study all topological phase transitions in non-interacting or weakly-correlated systems, as well as certain strongly-correlated systems. For topological phase transitions, our theorem implies that two quantum states with finite wavefunction inner product must belong to the same quantum phase and thus have exactly the same topological structure. The most notable of these narratives concerns the history of anti-Japanese armed struggle. Conferring a sense of sovereignty, authenticity, and legitimacy to the North Korean state, anti-Japanese armed struggle has continued to serve as a rich source of nationalist lore and a highly effective vehicle for forging identity and unity. In fact, it was by laying claim to this history and narrativizing it in specific ways that Kim Il-sung was able to transform national longing into personal charisma. Bryant and P. Griffiths. It stayed largely unnoticed that one and the only PDE (but with different initial data) lies in the base of many classical isoperimetric inequalities. But more importantly, by a funny change of variables (provided, for example, via EDS) this PDE can be made linear: namely, the inverse heat equation. Then such classical inequalities as log-Sobolev, Poincare, Beckner--Sobolev, Bobkov's inequality become particular solutions of this linear inverse heat equation. This observation allows us to invent many new isoperimetric inequalities (sharp of course) that are ``MORE sharp\" than the sharp classical ones. For example, we improved the Beckner--Sobolev inequality, and the talk will contain such an improvement for a particular exponent (where the new inequality looks especially nice). There are also other new isoperimetric inequalities in the paper having as CONSEQUENCES the classical ones. In particular, games belong to and complicate the experimental economy of the early twenty-first century. A central aspect of this economy has been the mobilization of forethought and forms of nonconscious cognition. How then can the non-conscious affects of games help us change conscious levels of human life, such as critical thought, judgment, and ultimately action? In their interplay between rationality and affect, videogames have a formidable concept-generating capacity. To demonstrate the possibilities and limits of this medium, this talk ultimately turns to the case study of Anna Anthropy's Dys4ia: an autobiographical piece that uses game-specific elements such as unfair rules, unsatisfying mechanics, unattainable objectives, and diverse avatars to convey the difficulties of transgender experience within heteronormative culture.\r\n \r\nPatrick Jagoda is associate professor of English and Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago. He is also a co-editor of Critical Inquiry and co-founder of the Game Changer Chicago Design Lab and the Transmedia Story Lab. Two of his books have been published in 2016: Network Aesthetics (University of Chicago Press) and The Game Worlds of Jason Rohrer (co-authored with Michael Maizels, MIT Press). Jagoda has also worked on several projects related to digital storytelling, transmedia game design, and new media learning.
