SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibition. Invisible Women: Portraits of Aging in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Photography by Ashley Bigham\, 2015-16 Walter B. Sanders Fellow\, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, U-M\; Watercolors by Grace Mahoney\, doctoral student in Slavic languages and literatures\, U-M.\n\nIn this exhibition\, artists Bigham and Mahoney investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine’s older generation of women—embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous\, the babusya. Seen in public transport\, in the market\, and on the street\, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say\, something to gossip about\, and something to complain about. The current generation of Ukrainian grandmothers survived World War II\, the Holodomor\, and multiple repressions. They are also active in the present—although civic activism is often thought to be the province of the young\, many babusya joined in the actions of Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv and throughout the country. Now they witness the war in Eastern Ukraine. Many of them have lost their homes and some of them have lost their children or grandchildren. The generation called\, “The Children of War” are now seniors of war. \n \nIn addition to their historic significance as a generation\, these women are present in the spheres of daily life throughout the country. Possibly overlooked in society\, these women are vibrant and active in the public spaces of contemporary Ukraine. Working in the open-air bazaars\, resting on public park benches\, or strolling through cemeteries\, these women stake their claim on the urban space—blending\, coalescing\, disappearing. This exhibit endeavors to tell the stories of these grannies. It’s an invitation to look closer\, to see the stories which are written on their faces – they are old and tired\, but not invisible. \n \nAshley Bigham is a lecturer and the 2015-2016 Walter B. Sanders Fellow at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Prior to her appointment at Taubman College\, Ashley was a Fulbright Fellow in Lviv\, Ukraine\, researching and teaching at the Center of Urban History of East Central Europe. Bigham holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee. \n \nGrace Mahoney is a Ph.D. student in Slavic Languages and Literatures. In 2014-15 she lived in Ukraine on a U.S. Student Fulbright fellowship and interned with the Revolution of Dignity Museum in Kyiv in summer 2016. She has Bachelor's degrees in Visual Art and English Literature from Seattle University. Her work from this show was originally shown in the exhibition Portraits of the Unlost at America House in Kyiv in summer 2015. \n \nAn artists’ talk will be held from 4-5:30 pm on Friday\, September 23 in 1636 SSWB.\n\nExhibition sponsors: Center for Russian\, East European\, and Eurasian Studies\; A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning\; Women's Studies Department\; Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Catie Newell: Overnight
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Mexico’s Poet of Light
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Mira Henry: The View Inside
DESCRIPTION:Before joining the faculty of the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles\, Mira Henry spent several years as a project architect\, immersed in the everyday\, banal details of how buildings get built: construction drawings\, material specs\, and building codes. She became an expert in seeing the world the way an architect sees it. But as a progressive architectural thinker\, Henry’s inspiration has been to deconstruct that vision\, to “unsee” the very forms and representations that constitute an architect’s basic language.\n\nThrough speculative experiments and conceptual drawings Henry discovers in static architectural details an unsettling range of figurative expression\, including\, for example\, the way the profiles of roof eaves resemble human heads. Wallpaper\, with its ability to mask\, transform\, or animate a space\, is also a prominent element in her work. Her projects explore how these features animate our subjective experience—what she calls our “shifting fantasies”—of architectural space.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink
DESCRIPTION:The Connoisseurs’ Legacy: The Collection of Nesta and Walter Spink celebrates gifts to the museum from two accomplished scholars with eclectic interests\, a keen appreciation of form\, and a love of learning from objects. Nesta Spink\, curator at UMMA from 1967 to 1979\, is regarded as the preeminent authority on the lithographs of James McNeill Whistler. U-M professor emeritus Walter Spink is a world-renowned specialist on early Buddhist art and architecture in India. This selection of their gifts\, exhibited together for the first time\, provides insight into the minds of two connoisseurs with tastes that range far beyond their areas of specialization\; highlights include exquisite Whistler prints that are rarely on display and a rich representation of South Asian folk art. The Connoisseurs’ Legacy also honors the Spinks’ long relationship with the museum\, their roles as teachers of future scholars and curators\, and their commitment to public education.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Like Blood from a Stone: Teasing out Social Difference from Lithic Production Debris at Kolomoki
DESCRIPTION:Early phases of Kolomoki’s occupation have been previously characterized as\nrelatively egalitarian\, with little evidence for economic or social differentiation.\nHowever\, patterned variability in lithic raw material use and intensity of\nproduction in domestic areas suggests heterogeneity in the community at\nmultiple scales. In light of Kolomoki’s proposed emphasis on communal\nceremony\, internal divisions between groups of households highlight the tension\nbetween public and private expressions of social difference and cohesion in early\nvillages. New radiocarbon dates from the southern margins of the village have\nallowed us to assess the contemporaneity of these patterns\, and by extension\,\nthe chronology of village aggregation.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Removed
DESCRIPTION:Removed (2016) explores processes of progressive translation\, abstraction and distortion. Musical improvisation is captured as choreographic experience\, then encoded into digital animation and 3D-printed sculptural forms. The performances are transformed by their conversion into visual media: sound is removed\, movement is abstracted from human anatomy into non-representational geometry\, and time is rendered as space. Removed creates a dialogue between the intuitive and the formalized\, and invites questions about the nature of translation and the absences it conceals.\n\nJoin us for an exhibit reception on Tuesday\, September 13th.\n\nChristopher Burns is a composer\, improviser\, and multimedia artist whose works explore collage\, layering\, and the use of generative algorithms to form and develop both musical and visual elements. His work creates a dialogue between complexity and clarity\, incorporating densely braided\, rapidly shifting materials alongside gradually evolving\, linearly directed textures. He is currently scholar-in-residence at the Digital Media Commons.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra
DESCRIPTION:This is the first of two talks on joint work of Tigran Ananyan and the speaker. The main result is that there is a positive integer B(n\,d) such that given n forms F_i of positive degree at most d in a polynomial ring R in N variables over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic 0 or greater than d (note that B = B(n\,d) does NOT depend on N or K)\, there exists a regular sequence of forms g_1\, ...\, g_h\, where h is at most B\, of degree at most d such that the F_i are in the ring K[g_1\, ...\, g_h]. This places the F_i in a \"small\" polynomial subring of R over which R is faithfully flat (in fact\, free). This implies Stillman's conjecture that the projective dimension of the ideal I generated by the F_i is bounded independent of N in the case where the characteristic is 0 or large: it will be at most B(n\,d). The authors had\nearlier shown this only up to degree 4. One can also bound all numerical data about the\nprimary decomposition of I independent of N. The authors have also obtained these\nresults for d = 2 and d = 3 with no restriction on the characteristic\, and in degree 4 except in characteristic 2. Many open questions remain. Speaker(s): Mel Hochster (University of Michigan)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Analysis/Probability Learning Seminar
DESCRIPTION:I will talk about the work of Aizenman\, Peled\, Schenker\, Shamis and Sodin\, studying the regularizing effect of the gaussian random noise to the spectral structure of a Hermitian matrix. The authors obtain the estimates for the norm of the inverse of A + V (where A is a base matrix\, V is a random gaussian noise) and for the average number of its eigenvalues inside an interval. We will mainly focus on the proof techniques: there is a nice collection of the probabilistic and Fourier-analytic methods employed in the proof. Speaker(s): Liza Rebrova (UM)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Development
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nI investigate the role of regulation and economic growth in shifting Brazil’s sugarcane industry from a polluting\, manual harvest to a cleaner\, mechanical harvest. I use worker- and establishment-level data to test the regulation using complementary regression discontinuity and difference-in-difference approaches. I find that regulation is\, at best\, a partial explanation\, accounting for no more than one quarter of the rapid\, widespread change in harvesting practices. I develop a tipping-point model to show how rising wages may have played an important role even though the change in wages was gradual and the change in harvesting was abrupt\; instrumental variables estimates imply that increasing wages alone are sufficient to explain the adoption of green technology.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar: Battles in the body: within-host competition and drug resistance evolution in malaria parasites
DESCRIPTION:Drug resistant pathogens cause thousands of deaths a year and threaten our ability to treat a variety of infectious diseases\, from ‘strep throat’ to malaria. Understanding which aspects of the within-host environment limit drug resistant pathogens\, and how these ‘superbugs’ interact with other populations of pathogens in that environment\, is vital for the development of novel\, ecologically-inspired resistance management strategies. Using a malaria mouse model\, we demonstrate that a nutrient limits drug resistant malaria parasites and mediates competition between drug resistant and drug susceptible parasites. We then show that manipulating the availability of such within-host nutrients can prevent the emergence of drug resistant parasites by intensifying competitive interactions between resistant parasites and their susceptible competitors. An ecological approach thus reveals an evolutionarily robust means of thwarting the emergence and spread of drug resistance.\n\nLight refreshments served at 4 p.m.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FALL 2016 COMMUNICATION & MEDIA SPEAKER SERIES The Naked Blogger of Cairo: Towards an Inclusive Global Media Studies
DESCRIPTION:Uprisings spread like wildfire across the Arab world from 2010 to 2012\, fueled by a desire for popular sovereignty. In Tunisia\, Egypt\, Syria\, and elsewhere\, protesters flooded the streets and the media\, voicing dissent through slogans\, graffiti\, puppetry\, videos\, and satire that called for the overthrow of dictators and the regimes that sustained them.\n\nInvestigating what drives people to risk everything to express themselves in rebellious art\, The Naked Blogger of Cairo uncovers the creative insurgency at the heart of the Arab uprisings. While commentators have stressed the role of social media\, Marwan M. Kraidy shows that the essential medium of political expression was not cell phone texts or Twitter but something more fundamental: the human body. Brutal governments that coerced citizens through torture and rape found themselves confronted with the bodies of protesters\, burning with defiance and boldly violating taboos. Activists challenged authority in brazen acts of self-immolation\, nude activism\, and hunger strikes. The bodies of dictators became a focus of ridicule. A Web series presented Syria’s Bashar al-Assad as a pathetic finger puppet\, while cartoons and videos spread a meme of Egypt’s Hosni Mubarak as a regurgitating cow.\n\nThe rise of digital culture complicates our understanding of the human body in revolutionary times. As Kraidy argues\, technology publicizes defiance\, but the body remains the vital nexus of physical struggle and digital communication\, destabilizing distinctions between “the real world” and virtual reality\, spurring revolutionary debates about the role of art\, and anchoring Islamic State’s attempted hijacking of creative insurgency.\n\nMarwan M. Kraidy is the Anthony Shadid Chair in Global Media\, Politics and Culture\, and Founding Director of the Center for Advanced Research in Global Communication (CARGC) at the Annenberg School for Communication\, University of Pennsylvania\, where he is also affiliated with the Middle East Center. An expert in global communication and a specialist in Arab media and politics\, he also researches the relationship between culture and geopolitics\, global media industries\, theories of identity and modernity\, and the political symbolism of the human body in the public sphere. Currently he is also an Andrew Carnegie Fellow.\n\nKraidy’s work is distinctive for its deep reliance on primary materials\, theoretical grounding in a multilingual literature\, and a comparative approach across historical periods\, geographical sites\, cultural forms\, and media platforms. Ongoing research focuses on war machines in the digital age (particularly Islamic State)\, speed\, spectacle and security in global communication\, and the rise and fall of Turkey in Arab public culture. He teaches courses on globalization\, culture and revolution\, the body in digital culture\, contentious publics\, and the geopolitics of popular culture.\n\nKraidy has published 10 books\, penned 120 essays and chapters\, won 50 awards for teaching and scholarship\, delivered keynote addresses and named lectures worldwide\, and advised universities\, civil society organizations\, foundations\, and governments. Notable books include Hybridity\, or the Cultural Logic of Globalization (Temple University Press\, 2005)\, and Reality Television and Arab Politics: Contention in Public Life (Cambridge University Press 2010)\, supported by a Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and a grant from the United States Institute of Peace\, and winner of three major prizes: the Diamond Anniversary Best Book Award and the Roderick P. Hart Outstanding Book Award in Political Communication\, National Communication Association\; and Best Book Award in Global Communication and Social Change\, International Communication Association.\n\nCo-Sponsored by the Global Media Studies Initiative

DESCRIPTION:Honors courses are offered in a wide variety of disciplines to allow you as much flexibility as possible in choosing courses that meet your interests and academic goals. We realize\, however\, that in a college with thousands of courses offered each term\, there is no way we can offer an Honors component for every course that Honors students are interested in taking. Attend ONE conversion workshop (or make an advising appointment) for details and access to the conversion paperwork required. (This is necessary\, even if you have completed Honors course conversions in the past).

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:I Could Have Mapped All Night: Musicals from Broadway to Bollywood
DESCRIPTION:We'll have maps on display from the location and time period during which popular musicals were set. Examples: The King and I will be represented by maps of Thailand (Siam) made in 1862\; The Music Man -- Iowa\, 1912\; Les Miserables -- Paris\, 1815-1832. We'll also have maps of the theater districts of New York City and the West End.\n\nPut on your top hat\, muss up that white tie\, and come dance down the Great White Way with us. We'll explore the settings and time periods of some of the world’s most famous musicals\, spanning from Broadway to Hollywood to Bollywood. We’ll feed the birds in London\, hear the people sing in Paris\, celebrate tradition in Anatevka\, let anything go as we cross the Atlantic\, have a rumble and sing about tomorrow in New York City\, march with 76 trombones in River City\, and dance with the king of Siam. Tails optional.\n\nThird Thursday is a monthly open house that highlights items from the Clark Library’s vast map collection. These fun\, thematic events are open to everyone\, offering the community a look at some of our favorite maps and other materials.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology
DESCRIPTION:The Kinoshita-Terasaka and Conway knots are notoriously hard to distinguish. This is because they are related by mutation\, an operation on knots that has subtle geometric effects. Many classical and modern knot invariants cannot tell mutants apart. In this talk\, I will discuss how various flavors of knot Floer homology detect and/or fail to detect mutations. The main result is a partial proof of Baldwin and Levine's conjecture that Conway mutation preserves delta-graded knot Floer homology. Speaker(s): Peter Lambert-Cole (Indiana University)

SUMMARY:Reception / Open House:Any Holder but a Pot Holder Opening Reception with artist Levester Williams
DESCRIPTION:Artist Levester Williams' installation\, both visceral and poetic\, reconsiders the urban sprawl of Detroit and its surrounding area through the small interventions with pot-laden roads. Williams fills a number of pot holes with his comical and (dis)figured sculptures that are composites of everyday and sculptural objects\, such as clothing articles and resin-coated toruses. His interventions become a morphological inquiry that strives toward a greater fertility between objects and beings\, language and the world.\n\nArtist's Statement: Pot hole. Hole saw. Hole in one. Hole in many. Hole out. Hole up. A hole in the wall. A hole in the heart. A hole in a sole. A whole-full soul. The existence of a hole is the fantasy of possibility\, the possibility of possession\, and the possession of a hole-full knowledge. Everything could be engaged through holes.\n\nAn asshole allows for the turning inward and outward of itself and\, thus\, commits itself to a perpetual transaction and contact of things. Like an asshole\, a pot hole is gaping for matter. Unlike an asshole\, a pot hole is gaping to matter to not matter anymore. Nonetheless\, the forming of pot holes evinces everything: commerce\; transportation\; class\; race\; water\; economics\; topography of basins\, streets\, and glaciers\; urban planning\; politics\; anatomy\; public policy\; etc. The hole theory may reveal such phenomenon.\n\nArtist William Pope.L writes about the hole theory—a theory of nothingness. His theory propagates without a point (to make). Nonetheless one (or many) exists. It resides in-between the spaces of the theoretical discourse\, away from definitive linguistic acts\, and in the imaginary faculty of our minds. Such theoretical elusion and self-reflexivity provides the means to occlude the theory: yet\, its paradoxical framing leaves the discourse wide open. The application of the theory ensures failure while its non-activity succeeds in procuring validation. A theory of nothingness has no substance\, yet it provides subsistence\; moreover\, it allows extensive contact with other modes of being\, even those that are existentially marginal. \n\nThe wholesomeness of a pot hole relies not on the integrity of a cohesive whole but on the incongruity of wholeness—a paradox of being. Such paradox affords the presence of a pot hole or any hole to reside at the brink of a soulfulness of all things. A worldly (de)formation. A holy reformation of life.\n\nCurator's Statement: Levester Williams’ work offers the unusual synthesis of the profane and the sublime… \n\nLike a sonnet\, a gutter\, a lover’s flesh\, a siren\, like sweat\, a high polish\, a thud in a bucket\, \n\nLike muck\, like gold\, like marble\, like a growl\, a dusk\, like a gust\, a gnarl\, a sapphire\, a spit wad\, like a last murmur. \n\nAnd it is this unabashed particularity… the hand in hand of the big picture that sets his work apart. \n\nAs an artist\, he is a humanist\, a natural\, authentic\, with a wholly original voice\, both Id and tribunal.\n\nAs part of the Institute’s year of Public Policy\, Williams maintained a studio on North Campus\, but also worked in the field\, isolating and making impressions of potholes from Detroit residential neighborhood roads in disrepair.\n\nHe returned to the original pot holes\, filling them with pieces of clothing and mundane household objects imbedded in the resin casts. In the process these too became imprints\, referencing the deeply invested communities and relationships that offer sustenance in the city of Detroit despite many challenges and deficits.\n\nConceptually\, Williams’ work is as much about filling as failing\, what can and cannot hold us\, as much about impermanence as sustenance\, acknowledging ultimately there is no quick fix\, despite a pavement loaded with good intentions. -Amanda Krugliak\, Institute for the Humanities curator

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The President and the Justice: A Look at the Legacy of Justice John Paul Stevens
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Constitution Day Lecture featuring Linda Greenhouse who will highlight Justice Stevens’ jurisprudence and the indelible mark he leaves on the Supreme Court.\n\nJustice John Paul Stevens was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1975 by President Gerald R. Ford. Now at the age of 96\, Justice Stevens is still an active contributor to our understanding of the Constitution through his speeches\, articles\, and books.\n \nLinda Greenhouse is a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter who covered the U.S. Supreme Court for nearly three decades for the New York Times. She currently teaches at the Yale Law School.\n\nLinda Greenhouse is also the author of the newly-released book\, The Burger Court and the Rise of the Judicial Right\, which gives a fresh and revelatory look at the Warren Burger Supreme Court. The book asserts that it was not a “moderate” or transitional court\, as often portrayed\, but a conservative one that still defines the constitutional landscape we live in today. Books will be available for sale.

SUMMARY:Performance:Altan
DESCRIPTION:Altan\, named for Loch Altan in Ireland's County Donegal\, has arguably had a wider impact on audiences over the quarter century than any other traditional Irish band. Their dynamic and warm live performances mix the most touching old Irish songs with hard-hitting reels and jigs\, and the band members' interest in and sheer enjoyment of each other musically is apparent even to audience members new to the Irish tradition. For the Irish music enthusiast\, Altan has a treasure trove of brilliant moves to offer: the mix of sounds from Donegal with outside influences\, the sheer virtuosity of the players\, the beauty\, delicate singing\, and down-to-earth charm of singer and fiddler Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh. Anywhere they go\, a concert by Altan is the Irish music event of the year. Popmatters calls the band's latest album\, \"The Widening Gyre\,\" \"a defining moment for Altan.\"
