Sanders Fellow, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, U-M; Watercolors by Grace Mahoney, doctoral student in Slavic languages and literatures, U-M.\r\n\r\nIn this exhibition, artists Bigham and Mahoney investigate the visibility and social role of Ukraine\u2019s older generation of women\u2014embodied in a figure both iconic and ubiquitous, the babusya. Seen in public transport, in the market, and on the street, each babusya has a story to tell. Each has something to say, something to gossip about, and something to complain about. The current generation of Ukrainian grandmothers survived World War II, the Holodomor, and multiple repressions. They are also active in the present\u2014although civic activism is often thought to be the province of the young, many babusya joined in the actions of Ukraine\u2019s Revolution of Dignity in Kyiv and throughout the country. Now they witness the war in Eastern Ukraine. Many of them have lost their homes and some of them have lost their children or grandchildren. The generation called, \u201cThe Children of War\u201d are now seniors of war. \r\n \r\nIn addition to their historic significance as a generation, these women are present in the spheres of daily life throughout the country. Possibly overlooked in society, these women are vibrant and active in the public spaces of contemporary Ukraine. Working in the open-air bazaars, resting on public park benches, or strolling through cemeteries, these women stake their claim on the urban space\u2014blending, coalescing, disappearing. This exhibit endeavors to tell the stories of these grannies. It\u2019s an invitation to look closer, to see the stories which are written on their faces \u2013 they are old and tired, but not invisible. \r\n \r\nAshley Bigham is a lecturer and the 2015-2016 Walter B. Sanders Fellow at the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Prior to her appointment at Taubman College, Ashley was a Fulbright Fellow in Lviv, Ukraine, researching and teaching at the Center of Urban History of East Central Europe. Bigham holds a Master of Architecture from Yale University and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee. \r\n \r\nGrace Mahoney is a Ph.D. student in Slavic Languages and Literatures. In 2014-15 she lived in Ukraine on a U.S. Student Fulbright fellowship and interned with the Revolution of Dignity Museum in Kyiv in summer 2016. She has Bachelor's degrees in Visual Art and English Literature from Seattle University. The warm up incorporates African diaspora traditions and unites students through chants and circle dances. Dancers then use movement and song to collectively shape choreographic space. Later, they explore how each student\u2019s personal rituals can expand to become fragments of choreography. At the end of the class, dancers share their work and create a new devised piece of collaborative storytelling.\u201d \nEach Modern Lab session features a different guest artist teaching a master class and sections from their repertory. For a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of dimension at least six, we prove that the existence of a conformal metric with positive scalar and Q-curvature is equivalent to the positivity of both the Yamabe invariant and the Paneitz operator. for basic hydrologic research and practical applications. This is particularly true when larger-scale processes, such as climate and weather, need to be translated to finer space-time scale process dynamics, such as soil moisture, channel hydraulics, and erosion and sediment transport. In this context, we pursue both modeling approaches and empirical observations and this presentation will illustrate both, highlighting latest research efforts. Specifically, we have developed a suite of integrated models simulating hydrologic and vegetation processes, flow dynamics, erosion, and sediment transport, tRIBS+VEGGIE-FEaST. The model aims to take advantage of the growing wealth of data representing watershed topography, vegetation, and soil, as well as urban environment, facilitating mechanistic exploration of (eco)hydrological factors and their feedback mechanisms. Research applications will demonstrate an urban flooding problem and a mechanistic attribution of non-uniqueness of upland soil erosion. Another example will focus on ecohydrology of Amazonian rainforests that experience seasonal droughts, while showing maximum rates of photosynthesis and evapotranspiration during these dry intervals. While global attention was transfixed by the capture of oil tankers and large container ships, the expansion of piracy in the Indian Ocean led to many more engagements between pirates and motorized dhows that sail from port to port in the western Indian Ocean littoral. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in India, UAE, and Somalia this talk focuses on these interactions between pirates and dhows in the watery expanses of the Western Indian Ocean. Specifically, by highlighting what came to be known as the practice of \u201cmothershipping\u201d\u2013the use of captured dhows to expand the spatial and temporal range of piracy\u2014I note worlds of violence, threat and hospitality constructed in these moments of encounter. Instead of a vision of the Indian Ocean that foregrounds long histories and cosmopolitan exchange, \u201cmothershipping\u201d emphasizes forms of contact that are both fleeting and overwhelmed by real and potential violence.
