SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Avian Vessels: Mixed Media Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Cincinnati based sculptor Karen Heyl has been professionally sculpting stone since 1984. She is best known for bas-relief limestone sculptures\, but in 2011 she developed an interest in sculpting clay using a similar relief carving technique. Out of this came an artistic exploration and refinement of birds using ceramic vessels as the starting point. Whimsical additions such as tails and beaks give each bird an individual personality. Each bird is perched on an individually carved limestone base to enhance the unique qualities that each bird displays. Heyl’s affinity for nature extends from her art to her love of gardening and the occasional golf game.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Divided Images: Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Jill Ault is an Ann Arbor studio artist working in fiber\, primarily quilts\, with a BFA degree in painting from Eastern Michigan University. Her quilts are constructed of multiple copies of an image: a photograph\, a graphic design or a painting. She digitally prints variations of the image on fabric and divides the copies into many small squares (no two alike). When she carefully reassembles and sews together the squares\, parts of the image seem to move across and down the surface of the quilt. Ault exhibits nationally at fiber and quilt shows\, such as Quilt National in Athens\, Ohio and Fiberart International in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Florence Flood\, November 1966
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit focuses on the destruction of Florence during the flood on November 4\, 1966. Among the collections severely impacted by the muddy waters were those in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. Book conservators from the United States and Western Europe were called in to help with the recovery efforts. The exhibit features a British team\, headed by Peter Waters\, which created a washing-drying-mending-rebinding system to deal with tens of thousands of books damaged by the disaster.\n\nThe two most important outcomes of the tragedy are the professional training of library conservators and the establishment of disaster preparedness and response programs.\n\nLearn more and register for the symposium\, The Flood in Florence\, 1966: A Fifty-Year Retrospective\, happening November 3-4\, 2016. https://www.lib.umich.edu/flood-florence-1966-fifty-year-retrospective

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Beyond the Standard Model Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Higgs boson discovery represents an important step\, yet it remains unclear what new physics may remain at the TeV scale. The LHC’s 2015 run demonstrated the ability to run at 13 TeV\, and a substantial amount of data are expected at this energy Summer 2016. These data will represent a real window of opportunity for discovery that will rapidly push into a new regime and probe many models at the TeV scale. \n\nShould a discovery be made\, this workshop will be the ideal opportunity to bring together experts to try and place any excesses in the context of underlying theories. In the absence of immediate signals\, it will be a chance to regroup\, and consider what the foci should be for BSM physics in the upcoming years. \n\nThe workshop will be around 2.5 days. Participants are welcome to stay for the remainder of the week (with fewer talks\, but opportunity for informal discussions and collaboration).\n\nFor registration information\, please contact Karen O'Donovan\, killwick@umich.edu

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Documenting Detroit - A Monts Hall Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Documenting Detroit is a collection of photographs taken by students from the College for Creative Studies during the 1970s and 1980s. Under the guidance of Detroit photographer and photography instructor Bill Rauhauser\, students turned the urban landscape into works of art.\n\nThis exhibition offers a select sample of a vast collection that includes nearly 1\,250 photographs of Detroit\, from churches to construction sites\, grocery stores to warehouses\, hospitals to schools\, and many others. The collection also provides a snapshot of visual symbols of Detroit during 20th century\, including the Michigan Central Train Station\, the J. L. Hudson’s Department Store on Woodward Avenue\, construction of the Renaissance Center and Joe Louis Arena\, and the abandonment of Poletown and the Warehouse District. Photographs also document everyday Detroit\, such as favorite restaurants (Jacoby’s\, Astoria Bakery\, Pegasus Taverna\, Circa 1890 Saloon\, and Sweetwater Tavern)\, families on Belle Isle\, and vendors at Eastern Market.\n\nYou can search the entire Documenting Detroit collection and develop your own primary source sets by visiting: http://detroiths.pastperfect-online.comand search for “Documenting Detroit.” The current exhibit is available during regular Detroit Center hours\, now through November 30\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Symposium: Ambiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\nAmbiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural is a symposium and concurrent exhibition that situates contemporary discourses and practices of architecture and landscape within the context of the Postnatural\; the era of climate change\, the Anthropocene\, and altered ecologies. The symposium asks: In a time when humans have been fundamentally displaced from their presumed place of privilege\, philosophically as well as experientially\, should the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture consider displacing themselves as well\, in order to establish new affiliations and avail new ways to approach contemporary questions of design in relation to the environment?\nBy bringing designers and scholars from these fields together the symposium and exhibition will highlight projects and ideas that are engaged with these issues from a variety of perspectives\, ranging from scale and experience to questions of matter. Participants will present research and work that use tactics of mediation to understand\, imagine\, interrupt\, and invent artifacts that exist at the large spatial and slow temporal scale of the Anthropocene.\nAmbiguous Territory will present design ideas and proposals from architects\, artists\, and landscape architects whose work challenges their disciplinary boundaries and long-held anthropocentric orientation and redefines the relationship between built and natural environments in an era of ecological anxiety.\nChairs:       \nKathy Velikov\, Associate Professor at the University of Michigan and principal of RVTR\nCathryn Dwyre\, Visiting Associate Professor at Pratt institute School of Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nChris Perry\, Associate Professor at Rensselaer Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nDavid Salomon\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Ithaca College.\nKeynotes:\nLiam Young\, urbanist\, designer and futurist\; founder of the futures think tank Tomorrows Thoughts Today (tomorrowsthoughtstoday.com)\; the ‘Unknown Fields Division’ (unknownfieldsdivision.com) at the Architectural Association in London\, and the ‘Fiction and Entertainment’ program at SciArc\nDavid Gissen\, author\, historian\, and Professor of Architecture and Visual and Critical Studies at the California College of the Arts and co-director of the Experimental History Project (http://davidgissen.org/)\nFor a full list of speakers and bios\, please visit the Ambiguous Territory symposium web page. \nAmbiguous Territory Symposium Schedule\nAll events in Taubman College Commons unless otherwise noted\nThursday October 5th\n5:00pm\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition Reception\n(Taubman College Gallery)\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: Liam Young\n(Art + Architecture Auditorium)\n \nFriday October 6th (all events occuring in The Commons)\n9:00am\nCoffee\n9:30am\nWelcome: Dean Jonathan Massey\nIntroductory Remarks: Associate Dean of Research and Creative Practice Geoffrey Thün\nSymposium Introduction: Kathy Velikov\n10:00am\nAtmospheric Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Kathy Velikov\nSpeaker 1: Christopher Hight\nSpeaker 2: Lydia Kallipoliti\nSpeaker 3: Sean Lally\nRespondent: Meredith Miller\nRoundtable Discussion\n12:00pm\nLunch Break (lunch not provided)\n1:00pm\nBiologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: David Salomon\nSpeaker 1: Jennifer Peeples\nSpeaker 2: Linsdey french\nSpeaker 3: Ricardo de Ostos\nRespondent: Ellie Abrons\nRoundtable Discussion\n3:00pm\nCoffee Break\n3:30pm\nGeologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Cathryn Dwyre and Chris Perry\nSpeaker 1: Alessandra Ponte\nSpeaker 2: Bradley Cantrell\nSpeaker 3: Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy\nRespondent: Mark Lindquist\nRoundtable Discussion\n5:30pm\nBreak\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: David Gissen\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition \nSeptember 27th – October 18th 2017\nUniversity of Michigan Taubman College Gallery\nDecember 2018 – January 2019\nPratt Manhattan Gallery\, New York

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Foreshadowing - Endangered and Threatened Plant Species
DESCRIPTION:A unique exhibit of botanical portraits that illuminates native and invasive plant species in a different light. Local artist and photographer Jane Kramer spent weeks exploring Michigan’s nature preserves and botanical gardens---including Matthaei---taking pictures of the shadows cast by native plant species. The shadow images were then transferred to handmade paper created from invasive plant species. For Kramer the shadows speak to the fragility of threatened plants and their struggle to survive in a changing environment that includes invasive species. The coupling of shadow and paper underscores the complex relationship between invasive and endangered plant species. Free admission. Open Wednesdays until 8 pm.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Forms of Verse
DESCRIPTION:Poets in English use rhythm and meter to express thought and feeling. After a brief introduction\, participants will read and hear examples of different verse forms: sonnets\, couplets\, alliterative verse\, blank verse\, free verse and poems in unusual meters and stanzas. Examples will be drawn from very early English poetry up to the 20th century. We'll consider how poetry works as narrative\, as a vehicle for experience and as self-expression. We'll use a short anthology that the instructor will make available to the class. James McIntosh is Professor Emeritus of English and American Culture. This class for adults over 50 meets Mondays through December 5th. There will be no class on Oct 17. The December 5th class will be held at Turner Senior Resource Center\, 2401 Plymouth Road. \nhttps://olli-umich.org/olli/index.php/member/ctlg/viewEventDetails/892

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Catie Newell: Overnight
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Mexico’s Poet of Light
DESCRIPTION:Manuel Álvarez Bravo spent nearly his entire career photographing his native Mexico. His style drew upon numerous international influences\, ranging from the Modernism of Edward Weston and Tina Modotti\, whom he met when they spent time in Mexico in the 1920s\, to the formally exquisite photojournalism of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Walker Evans\, whose work he knew in New York\, and the Surrealism of André Breton\, who visited Mexico around 1940.\n\nAlthough not strictly Surrealist\, many of Álvarez Bravo’s works manifest a similarly fantastical mood\; one of the artist’s most arresting qualities is his ability to imbue scenes of everyday life with an otherworldly\, metaphysical power. The twenty-three photographs in the exhibition\, drawn from UMMA’s collections\, show the artist’s ability to synthesize a personal—even nationalistic—style that merged the motifs of Mexican religious and indigenous works and plant forms (such as agave leaves) with a Modernist approach to image making. Throughout\, the presence of light as a wondrous metaphor and revealer of life animates even the emptiest and most silent of Álvarez Bravo’s scenes.\n\n**Special hours Sundays: 12–5pm\, CLOSED Mondays

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CMENAS Colloquium Series. Muslim Pathways: Ethics of Cohabitation\, Assembly\, and Informality
DESCRIPTION:Drawing upon field research in different Muslim cities\, Professor Haines analyzes the diverse ways modernity reshapes community\, belonging\, and cohabitation through the mapping and policing of a diversity of borders: between modernity and tradition\, centers and peripheries\, wealthy and poor\, as well as between national territories. He questions how crossing borders and disrupting normative claims to purifying the ‘in-group’ become contested aspirations and practices to forge new kinds of community\, ones often rooted in Islamic ideals and ethics. \n \nChad Haines is a cultural anthropologist and assistant professor of Religious Studies and Global Studies at Arizona State University. He earned his PhD in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2000). Haines’ publications include Nation\, Territory\, and Globalization in Pakistan: Traversing the Margins (Routledge 2012) that analyzes the mapping of marginal spaces within the nation-making processes of Pakistan\, particularly focusing on the remote\, mountainous northern region of Gilgit-Baltistan. He is co-editor of Women and Peace in the Islamic World: Gender\, Agency\, and Influence (I.B. Taurus 2015) and the forthcoming People’s Peace: Prospects for a Human Future. He is currently completing a manuscript titled: Muslim Pathways: Negotiating Modernity\, Religion\, and Urbanity. \n\nBefore moving to ASU\, Haines taught at American University in Cairo (2004-2008) and was a Senior Fulbright Research Fellow in Pakistan (2009). He held a number of visiting and research positions at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill’s University Center for International Studies\, at Duke University’s Center for South Asian Studies\, the Center for Civilizational Dialogue in the University of Malaysia\, and the Center for the Study of Religion and Conflict at ASU.\n\n** For CMENAS students only **\n1:30-2 pm — CMENAS students workshop/discussion with the lecturer/professor.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Mathematical Biology
DESCRIPTION:Phytoplankton\, and the zooplankton that graze upon them\, play a crucial role in the dynamics observed at higher levels of the aquatic ecosystem. There is a vast literature on differential equation models of plankton dynamics\, and a recent trend in ecological models has considered plasticity in parameters and adaptation. In this talk\, we interpret plasticity as prey switching\, that is\, predator’s adaptive change of diet in response to the abundance of prey. We first analyse a model constructed for one predator feeding on two different types of prey and inspired by plankton observations. This model has a discontinuity between two vector fields. We then discuss two different smooth formulations of the model and compare model predictions with data on freshwater plankton collected from Lake Constance on the German-Swiss-Austrian border. Finally\, we discuss a 1 fast-3 slow system for one predator feeding adaptively on two different prey types and inspired by the first model.\n Speaker(s): Sofia Piltz (University of Michigan)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Humanists in the Ford School of Public Policy Writing for the Public
DESCRIPTION:A conversation with U-M Ford School of Public Policy professors Shobita Parthasarathy\, Paul Courant\, Joy Rohde\, moderated by Institute for the Humanities director Sidonie Smith\n\nAbout the participants:\n\nShobita Parthasarathy is Associate Professor of Public Policy and Women's Studies at the University of Michigan. She studies policy and politics related to science and technology\, as well as the politics of evidence and expertise in policymaking\, in the United States\, Europe\, and India. She is the author of numerous articles and a book\, Building Genetic Medicine: Breast Cancer\, Technology\, and the Comparative Politics of Health Care (MIT Press\, 2007). Findings from this book\, which compared the development of genetic testing for breast and ovarian cancer in the United States and Britain\, helped to inform the 2013 US Supreme Court case over gene patents. Her second book\, Patently Political: Life\, Markets\, and Morality in the United States and Europe\, is forthcoming with University of Chicago Press. Comparing recent controversies over life form patents in the United States and Europe\, it demonstrates how political culture\, ideology\, and history shape patent systems in fundamental ways. She is starting a new project that aims to develop a better understanding of grassroots innovation in India\, which often takes place outside the global marketplace and is low-tech and small-scale\, in the hope that it might usefully inform both our theories of innovation and our innovation and development policies. She is a Faculty Affiliate in UM's Science\, Technology\, and Society and Feminist Science Studies programs. She sits on the Council of the Society for the Social Studies of Science\, and the Governing Council of the Science and Democracy Network.\n\nPaul Courant has served as provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs\, University Librarian and Dean of Libraries\, as associate provost for Academic and Budgetary Affairs\, as chair of the Department of Economics\, and as director of the Institute of Public Policy Studies (predecessor of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy). He served as a senior staff economist at the Council of Economic Advisers from 1979 to 1980. Courant has authored half a dozen books\, and over seventy papers covering a broad range of topics in economics and public policy. Most recently\, his academic work has considered the economics of universities\, the economics of libraries and archives\, and the effects of new information technologies and other disruptions on scholarship\, scholarly publication\, and academic libraries. He is active in a number of national initiatives\, including the Digital Public Library of America and the Authors Alliance.\n\nJoy Rohde\, assistant professor of public policy\, is a historian who works at the intersection of U.S. intellectual and policy history\, the history of U.S. foreign relations\, and science and technology studies. She is currently working on a book project that explores how ideas about cybernetics and advances in information technology\, like research databases and statistical software\, impacted the social sciences and policy analysis in the United States since World War II. Joy's first book\, Armed with Expertise: The Militarization of American Social Research during the Cold War (Cornell University Press\, 2013)\, investigates the Cold War origins and contemporary consequences of the Pentagon&rsquo\;s social research contracting system. At Michigan\, Joy is a member of the core faculty in the Science\, Technology\, and Society Program. She also holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of History. Prior to joining the Ford School\, Joy was an assistant professor of history at Trinity University.\n\nSidonie Smith is the Mary Fair Croushore Professor of the Humanities\, and Director of the Institute for the Humanities. Her interests include autobiography studies\, feminist theories\, women’s literature\, human rights and narrative\, and the future of doctoral studies in the humanities.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:A Progressive's View of the Conservative Movement
DESCRIPTION:Political commentator E.J. Dionne views contemporary American conservatism as a betrayal of its voters and a root cause of the turbulence in the Republican party today. He argues that conservatives promise to abolish big government and restore traditional values\, yet they repeatedly disappoint. This has created an untenable situation in which groups with different ideals - libertarians\, moralists and nativists - are vying for control. We'll read and discuss his book\, Why the Right Went Wrong: Conservatism - From Goldwater to the Tea Party and Beyond. Read to pg. 27 for the first class. Instructor: Gerald Lapidus. DESCRIPTION:This study group uses essays\, fiction\, poems and memoir excerpts written by women about aging as prompts for reflective writing. Following a discussion\, members will write during class and volunteers will share their writing with the group. Sample prompts are: Write about a fear you have in growing older or describe a strength or positive attribute that has emerged in you as you've grown older? This is not a creative writing class\, but an opportunity to reflect more deeply through writing about what aging means to us as individuals. Instructor: Beth Spencer. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Wonderland Gems & Jewels
DESCRIPTION:Betsy Lehndorff’s jewelry is influenced by her life in Hubbard Lake in northeastern Michigan. Using her stone cutting and silversmithing skills\, she takes on six subjects that impact her isolated world: water\, winter\, plants\, critters\, rocks and the heavens. Her work\, often representational and sometimes narrative\, challenges the idea of jewelry as a status symbol. Lehndorff was born and raised in Ann Arbor\, and lived in Colorado until 2012. She is a granddaughter of renowned architect Albert Kahn (Hill Auditorium and the “Old Main” U-M Hospital) and daughter of Dr. Edgar A. Kahn\, who headed the neurosurgery department at the U-M Hospital in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Social\, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nLow-value health services constitute care that in most cases does not improve patient outcomes and can lead to unnecessary harms. Choosing Wisely® (www.choosingwisely.org) is a large-scale\, evidence-based campaign to raise awareness of low-value health services that has gained international momentum since being launched in the United States in 2012. However\, simple awareness of evidence is often insufficient to change many clinical decisions without strategies that target factors underlying clinicians’ decisions to order these services. \n\nOne factor that can drive clinicians to order low-value health services is the context in which they typically make such decisions. Even when clinicians know certain services do not improve population-level outcomes\, their decisions to order these services for individual patients are often made quickly in the midst of seeing patients and multi-tasking. These constraints may lead clinicians to rely on heuristics rather than careful deliberation. Further\, clinicians can be influenced by patient requests that stem from beliefs that more health care intervention is superior. \n\nA promising solution to this problem that leverages insights from behavioral economics is to ask clinicians to commit to follow specific Choosing Wisely recommendations before patient encounters when their thinking can be more deliberative\, and then provide point-of-care supports to promote adherence to these commitments during patient encounters. We recently tested this strategy in 6 primary care clinics and found it led to a significant reduction in orders for potentially low-value services\, but may also have increased substitute orders of questionable value. These results highlight not only the great potential of this low-cost\, highly exportable strategy to discourage clinicians from ordering low-value services in a range of health care settings\, but also the potential for unintended consequences of efforts to reduce low-value care.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Special Seminar: The impact of fire\, nutrients\, and their interaction on the carbon balance of savanna ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Carbon emissions from fires in savannas and forests play a key role in the global carbon cycle. As climates change and fires become more frequent and intense\, it will be critical to understand what factors determine the resilience of ecosystems to fire. Here\, I will present work from tropical savannas in Africa and South America that tests how fire changes ecosystem carbon storage\, and the role that climate\, nutrients\, and plant traits play in mediating the response of savannas to fire. By sampling fire manipulation experiments that have been ongoing for half a century\, I found that fire depleted carbon and nutrient pools in soils and vegetation\, but that the degree of the effect and the regulating mechanisms depended on climate. The fire-driven nutrient losses filtered the plant community towards more nutrient conservative slow-growing species\, suggesting nutrient limitation may limit the recovery of vegetation. Along similar lines\, particular plant traits regulated whether species could avoid mortality during fire and were significant determinants of carbon losses at the landscape scale. These results raise new questions about how nutrient losses may limit carbon sequestration\, and whether the distribution of plant functional traits can be used to predict resilience across different ecosystems\, which I will discuss in the context of my current and future work.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Measuring Dark Energy and The Hubble Constant With Type Ia Supernovae
DESCRIPTION:Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa) continue to be a critical probe in measurements of dark energy and The Hubble constant. I will discuss the role of SNIa in a new local measurement of the Hubble Constant by the SH0ES team that is in tension with measurements of the Hubble Constant from analysis of the Cosmic Microwave Background. I will discuss ongoing analyses from PanSTARRS and The Dark Energy Survey to provide state-of-the-art constraints on dark energy with SNIa. I will also present multiple new advances in methods of standardizing and calibrating these supernovae. Finally I will look ahead to the next generation of surveys including LSST and WFIRST and discuss critical questions about systematics of current analyses that must be solved for these future surveys to be successful.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Integrable Systems and Random Matrix Theory
DESCRIPTION:This is a continuation of last week's seminar: In this lecture\, we consider the famed doubly-infinite Toda lattice which is completely-integrable. We present the inverse scattering transform method for the solution of the Cauchy initial value problem for sufficiently decaying initial data. As is well known\, the Toda lattice equations can be recast as an isospectral flow on Jacobi matrices and this gives rise to the existence of a Lax pair. Thus we move on to cover scattering theory for Jacobi matrices\, introduce the scattering transform and scattering data associated with a Jacobi matrix. Then we cover the time evolution of the scattering data under the dynamics induced by the Toda lattice equations and present the Riemann-Hilbert formulation of the inverse scattering transform. We review some results on long-time asymptotics of the solutions of the Cauchy initial problem for sufficiently decaying initial data. Time permitting\, we plan to consider Hamiltonian perturbations of the Toda lattice. Speaker(s): Deniz Bilman (University of Michigan)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Combinatorics Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The rank of a tensor T in V_1 \otimes V_2 ... \otimes V_n is the smallest integer k such that T can be written as a sum of k pure tensors. This notion coincides with matrix rank if there are only 2 tensor factors. However\, the situation is considerably more complicated when there are more tensor factors. In this talk I will attempt to describe the importance as well as the challenges in understanding tensor rank and other related notions. Speaker(s): Viswambhara Makam (University of Michigan)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Group\, Lie and Number Theory
DESCRIPTION:The local Langlands correspondence predicts that representations of a reductive group G over a p-adic field are related to Galois representations into the Langlands dual of G. A conjecture of Kottwitz (as generalized by Rapoport and Viehmann) asserts that this relationship appears in a precise way in the cohomology of \"local Shimura varieties\"\, which were shown to exist by Scholze. We don't know how Galois acts on this cohomology yet\, but we can verify much of the rest of the conjecture\, in a large degree of generality\, using a Lefschetz-Verdier fixed point formula. This is joint work with Tasho Kaletha. Speaker(s): Jared Weinstein (Boston University)
