SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Avian Vessels: Mixed Media Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Cincinnati based sculptor Karen Heyl has been professionally sculpting stone since 1984. She is best known for bas-relief limestone sculptures\, but in 2011 she developed an interest in sculpting clay using a similar relief carving technique. Out of this came an artistic exploration and refinement of birds using ceramic vessels as the starting point. Whimsical additions such as tails and beaks give each bird an individual personality. Each bird is perched on an individually carved limestone base to enhance the unique qualities that each bird displays. Heyl’s affinity for nature extends from her art to her love of gardening and the occasional golf game.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Divided Images: Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Jill Ault is an Ann Arbor studio artist working in fiber\, primarily quilts\, with a BFA degree in painting from Eastern Michigan University. Her quilts are constructed of multiple copies of an image: a photograph\, a graphic design or a painting. She digitally prints variations of the image on fabric and divides the copies into many small squares (no two alike). When she carefully reassembles and sews together the squares\, parts of the image seem to move across and down the surface of the quilt. Ault exhibits nationally at fiber and quilt shows\, such as Quilt National in Athens\, Ohio and Fiberart International in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sinking City\, Between Civilization and the Deep Blue Sea
DESCRIPTION:Jakarta\, Indonesia has a serious problem with flooding. The city is literally sinking while also experiencing climate change related sea-level rise. Add to that the yearly heavy rainfall the city sees from the Southeast Asian monsoon and a population that has swelled beyond ten million due to rapid urbanization\, and it’s easy to see why Jakarta’s infrastructure is experiencing significant strain. Jakarta isn’t an isolated example of this perfect storm. It represents the future difficulty that coastal cities all over the world are likely to face.\n\nUnderstanding that lessons learned in Jakarta can have a global impact\, University of Michigan alumus Frank Sedlar set out to help with flood mitigation in Jakarta. Frank earned his master of science degree from Michigan Engineering and also studied the Indonesian language while at the university. Photojournalist and filmmaker Marcin Szczepanski and writer Ben Logan from Michigan Engineering chronicled Frank’s experience while in Jakarta working on modern solutions to Jakarta’s growing problem.\n\nPlease join us for an opening reception on Friday\, October 21 at 5 PM at the International Institute Gallery. Refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Florence Flood\, November 1966
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit focuses on the destruction of Florence during the flood on November 4\, 1966. Among the collections severely impacted by the muddy waters were those in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. Book conservators from the United States and Western Europe were called in to help with the recovery efforts. The exhibit features a British team\, headed by Peter Waters\, which created a washing-drying-mending-rebinding system to deal with tens of thousands of books damaged by the disaster.\n\nThe two most important outcomes of the tragedy are the professional training of library conservators and the establishment of disaster preparedness and response programs.\n\nLearn more and register for the symposium\, The Flood in Florence\, 1966: A Fifty-Year Retrospective\, happening November 3-4\, 2016. https://www.lib.umich.edu/flood-florence-1966-fifty-year-retrospective

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Documenting Detroit - A Monts Hall Photo Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Documenting Detroit is a collection of photographs taken by students from the College for Creative Studies during the 1970s and 1980s. Under the guidance of Detroit photographer and photography instructor Bill Rauhauser\, students turned the urban landscape into works of art.\n\nThis exhibition offers a select sample of a vast collection that includes nearly 1\,250 photographs of Detroit\, from churches to construction sites\, grocery stores to warehouses\, hospitals to schools\, and many others. The collection also provides a snapshot of visual symbols of Detroit during 20th century\, including the Michigan Central Train Station\, the J. L. Hudson’s Department Store on Woodward Avenue\, construction of the Renaissance Center and Joe Louis Arena\, and the abandonment of Poletown and the Warehouse District. Photographs also document everyday Detroit\, such as favorite restaurants (Jacoby’s\, Astoria Bakery\, Pegasus Taverna\, Circa 1890 Saloon\, and Sweetwater Tavern)\, families on Belle Isle\, and vendors at Eastern Market.\n\nYou can search the entire Documenting Detroit collection and develop your own primary source sets by visiting: http://detroiths.pastperfect-online.comand search for “Documenting Detroit.” The current exhibit is available during regular Detroit Center hours\, now through November 30\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:John Cage: \"How to get Started\" sound installation
DESCRIPTION:Sound installation of John Cage's \"How to Get Started\,\" featuring a library of previous performances.\n\nAbout \"How to Get Started\": John Cage conceived HOW TO GET STARTED almost as an afterthought—a performance substituting for another that had been planned in 1989 for delivery at “Sound Design: An Invitational Conference on the Uses of Sound for Radio Drama\, Film\, Video\, Theater and Mu-sic” presented by Bay Area Radio Drama at Sprocket Systems\, Skywalker Ranch\, in Nicasio\, California. In his introduction\, Cage talks about the difficulty of initiating the creative process\, while exploring the usefulness of improvisation\, a subject about which he had long been deeply ambivalent. He proposes a col-laborative framework in which sound engineers capture and subsequently layer his extemporized monologue\, which consisted of ten brief commentaries on top-ics then of interest. This amounted to an experiment having to do with thinking in public\, before a live audience.\n\nTwenty years after John Cage's first and only performance of HOW TO GET STARTED in Nicasio\, the John Cage Trust and Slought Foundation joined forces to create an interactive installation enabling the public to add yet another layer to the mix: your extemporizations on your ten topics of interest\, in your voice. Drawing upon Cage’s realization of HOW TO GET STARTED as a script in effect\, performers have been invited to participate in its further life\, both in public settings and in the more intimate\, specially designed recording studio at Slought.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Symposium: Ambiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\nAmbiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural is a symposium and concurrent exhibition that situates contemporary discourses and practices of architecture and landscape within the context of the Postnatural\; the era of climate change\, the Anthropocene\, and altered ecologies. The symposium asks: In a time when humans have been fundamentally displaced from their presumed place of privilege\, philosophically as well as experientially\, should the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture consider displacing themselves as well\, in order to establish new affiliations and avail new ways to approach contemporary questions of design in relation to the environment?\nBy bringing designers and scholars from these fields together the symposium and exhibition will highlight projects and ideas that are engaged with these issues from a variety of perspectives\, ranging from scale and experience to questions of matter. Participants will present research and work that use tactics of mediation to understand\, imagine\, interrupt\, and invent artifacts that exist at the large spatial and slow temporal scale of the Anthropocene.\nAmbiguous Territory will present design ideas and proposals from architects\, artists\, and landscape architects whose work challenges their disciplinary boundaries and long-held anthropocentric orientation and redefines the relationship between built and natural environments in an era of ecological anxiety.\nChairs:       \nKathy Velikov\, Associate Professor at the University of Michigan and principal of RVTR\nCathryn Dwyre\, Visiting Associate Professor at Pratt institute School of Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nChris Perry\, Associate Professor at Rensselaer Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nDavid Salomon\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Ithaca College.\nKeynotes:\nLiam Young\, urbanist\, designer and futurist\; founder of the futures think tank Tomorrows Thoughts Today (tomorrowsthoughtstoday.com)\; the ‘Unknown Fields Division’ (unknownfieldsdivision.com) at the Architectural Association in London\, and the ‘Fiction and Entertainment’ program at SciArc\nDavid Gissen\, author\, historian\, and Professor of Architecture and Visual and Critical Studies at the California College of the Arts and co-director of the Experimental History Project (http://davidgissen.org/)\nFor a full list of speakers and bios\, please visit the Ambiguous Territory symposium web page. \nAmbiguous Territory Symposium Schedule\nAll events in Taubman College Commons unless otherwise noted\nThursday October 5th\n5:00pm\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition Reception\n(Taubman College Gallery)\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: Liam Young\n(Art + Architecture Auditorium)\n \nFriday October 6th (all events occuring in The Commons)\n9:00am\nCoffee\n9:30am\nWelcome: Dean Jonathan Massey\nIntroductory Remarks: Associate Dean of Research and Creative Practice Geoffrey Thün\nSymposium Introduction: Kathy Velikov\n10:00am\nAtmospheric Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Kathy Velikov\nSpeaker 1: Christopher Hight\nSpeaker 2: Lydia Kallipoliti\nSpeaker 3: Sean Lally\nRespondent: Meredith Miller\nRoundtable Discussion\n12:00pm\nLunch Break (lunch not provided)\n1:00pm\nBiologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: David Salomon\nSpeaker 1: Jennifer Peeples\nSpeaker 2: Linsdey french\nSpeaker 3: Ricardo de Ostos\nRespondent: Ellie Abrons\nRoundtable Discussion\n3:00pm\nCoffee Break\n3:30pm\nGeologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Cathryn Dwyre and Chris Perry\nSpeaker 1: Alessandra Ponte\nSpeaker 2: Bradley Cantrell\nSpeaker 3: Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy\nRespondent: Mark Lindquist\nRoundtable Discussion\n5:30pm\nBreak\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: David Gissen\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition \nSeptember 27th – October 18th 2017\nUniversity of Michigan Taubman College Gallery\nDecember 2018 – January 2019\nPratt Manhattan Gallery\, New York

Local artist and photographer Jane Kramer spent weeks exploring Michigan’s nature preserves and botanical gardens---including Matthaei---taking pictures of the shadows cast by native plant species. The shadow images were then transferred to handmade paper created from invasive plant species. For Kramer the shadows speak to the fragility of threatened plants and their struggle to survive in a changing environment that includes invasive species. The coupling of shadow and paper underscores the complex relationship between invasive and endangered plant species. Free admission. Open Wednesdays until 8 pm.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Catie Newell: Overnight
DESCRIPTION:Detroit-based architect Catie Newell’s work is focused on the tactile\, sensory qualities of the materials we use to build things: their texture\, density\, or malleability. Her investigations combine architectural research\, material studies\, and art experiments\, a strategy she began as a student that now defines her career.\n\nThe most important element in her formal vocabulary is light\, not only as a “material” in its own right\, but also as a condition. Varying in strength\, form\, and duration\, light constructs architecture as a situational experience rather than a fixed space. Newell’s fascination with light is a fascination with darkness. Through urban interventions\, installations\, and photographs\, she investigates how darkness creates alternate environments\, with unseen geographies\, untold histories\, and secret identities.\n\nNewell\, assistant professor of architecture at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, is a recent recipient of the Rome Prize in architecture. Overnight includes photographs from her Rome project as well as new photography from the series Nightly\, featuring nighttime images of Detroit streetscapes and interiors\, alongside a site-specific sculptural installation commissioned by the Museum.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Kabuki actors were superstars in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japan. They were admired by passionate fans with an insatiable appetite for images of them\, fed by a publishing industry that mass-produced colorful woodblock prints of actors on stage that could be cheaply purchased as souvenirs of or substitutes for a theater experience. Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols\, including off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans’ voyeuristic curiosity about their favorite actors’ lives\, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groupings\, and even death portraits of especially famous actors. This introduction to the visual culture surrounding kabuki theater includes prints by major artists such as Utagawa Toyokuni (1769–1825)\, Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865)\, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861)\, and Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900).\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the William T. and Dora G. Hunter Endowment\, AISIN\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, and the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the Japan Foundation and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces: Reconstructing the History of a Chokwe Mask
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Traces focuses on one artwork from the Museum's African holdings: a Chokwe mask that was collected in 1905 near the Angolan city of Dundo by the German explorer Leo Frobenius. Its presence at UMMA today—almost 7\,500 miles away from the context in which it was originally created\, used\, and valued—is the result of a long and tumultuous journey\, spanning a hundred years\, three continents\, and numerous people whose lives are forever connected to the artifact that passed through their hands.\nTraces tells the stories of some of these individuals as it reconstructs the “biography” of the mask. Drawing on the Museum’s African art collection and complemented with national loans\, the exhibition is informed by research that exposes the mask’s many layers and restores some of its historical complexity. Visitors will be able to look closely\, and in great detail\, at this intriguing artwork and its fascinating story.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the James and Vivian Curtis Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Center for the Education of Women's Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Brown Bag Seminar | Lighting Up Collider Searches for Electroweak States
DESCRIPTION:Despite appearing in many extensions of the Standard Model\, uncolored electroweak particles face limited collider search prospects. For nearly degenerate electroweak multiplets where the lightest state is electrically neutral\, searches typically rely on pair production of the new states in association with visible radiation\, e.g. the mono-X final state. We show that for such new particles\, considering final state photon radiation can provide increased sensitivity. The additional kinematical information provided by including final state electromagnetic radiation more than compensates for the reduced statistics.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Medieval Lunch. Defining Faith for Ordinary Christians in the Fifth-Century Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:My dissertation asks the question of how bishops and priests taught ordinary Christians about their faith in the fifth and sixth century\, when they no longer had the opportunity to educate adult converts to Christianity through catechesis. In order to ask this question\, however\, I must first define the terms 'ordinary' and 'faith.' In this talk\, I will explore what these terms meant for the preachers I study and in the larger context of the late antique Mediterranean. I will show that there was a specific group of 'ordinary' people for whom preachers attempted to make their teachings on Christianity especially clear\, and that there was a generally agreed-upon definition of 'faith' (fides\, pistis) in late antiquity that individual preachers nevertheless manipulated in order to more effectively teach their specific congregations

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Wonderland Gems & Jewels
DESCRIPTION:Betsy Lehndorff’s jewelry is influenced by her life in Hubbard Lake in northeastern Michigan. Using her stone cutting and silversmithing skills\, she takes on six subjects that impact her isolated world: water\, winter\, plants\, critters\, rocks and the heavens. Her work\, often representational and sometimes narrative\, challenges the idea of jewelry as a status symbol. Lehndorff was born and raised in Ann Arbor\, and lived in Colorado until 2012. She is a granddaughter of renowned architect Albert Kahn (Hill Auditorium and the “Old Main” U-M Hospital) and daughter of Dr. Edgar A. Kahn\, who headed the neurosurgery department at the U-M Hospital in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Laura Kuhn Lecture\, \"Improvisation and the Experimental Music Tradition\"
DESCRIPTION:In connection with the performance and installation of John Cage's \"How to Get Started\,\" Laura Kuhn\, executive director of the John Cage trust\, talks about the experimental music movement in America (in the latter half of the 20th century)\, and where and how improvisational tactics\, both in composition and performance\, might fit. \n\nAbout \"How to Get Started\": John Cage conceived HOW TO GET STARTED almost as an afterthought—a performance substituting for another that had been planned in 1989 for delivery at “Sound Design: An Invitational Conference on the Uses of Sound for Radio Drama\, Film\, Video\, Theater and Mu-sic” presented by Bay Area Radio Drama at Sprocket Systems\, Skywalker Ranch\, in Nicasio\, California.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | Planets Around Nearby Stars
DESCRIPTION:Modern science began with Copernicus speculating that the Earth is a planet and that all the planets orbit the Sun. Bruno followed up by speculating that the Sun is a star\, that other stars have planets\, and other planets are inhabited by life. For this and other heresies\, Bruno was burned at the stake in a public square in Rome in 1600. Astronomy and extrasolar planets were a really hot field at the time. \n\nOver the past 20 years more than a thousand extrasolar planets have been found\, first from ground-based precision Doppler and photometric transit surveys\, and more recently by the Kepler space mission. We have concentrated on building precise Doppler systems to survey the nearest stars. Our systems at Lick\, Keck\, AAT\, and Magellan have found hundreds of planets\, including 5 of the first six planets\, the first saturn-mass planet\, the first neptune-mass planet\, the first terrestrial mass planet\, and the first multiple planet system. \n\nIn August we announced the discovery of a potentially habitable around the nearest star\, Proxima Centauri\, based on archival data from the ESO HARPS and UVES spectrometers reanalyzed with improved packages that we have written\, and with a dedicated 2 month campaign of high cadence observing on HARPS. This discovery highlights the latest statistical evidence from Kepler and ground-based Doppler surveys that ~30% of stars have potentially habitable planets.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Financial/Actuarial Mathematics
DESCRIPTION:We consider a stylized core-periphery financial network in which links lead to the creation of projects in the outside economy but make banks prone to contagion risk. The controller seeks to maximize\, under budget constraints\, the value of the financial system defined as the total amount of projects. Under partial information on interbank links\, revealed in conjunction with the spread of contagion\, the optimal control problem is shown to become a Markov decision problem. We find the optimal intervention policy using dynamic programming.\n\nOur numerical results show that the value of the system depends on the connectivity in a non-monotonous way: it first increases with connectivity and then decreases with connectivity.\nThe maximum value attained depends critically on the budget of the controller and the availability of an adapted intervention strategy. Moreover\, we show that for highly connected systems\, it is optimal to increase the rate of intervention in the peripheral banks rather than in core banks.\n\njoint with H. Amini and A. Sulem Speaker(s): Andreea Minca (Cornell)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LACS Lecture. Eating NAFTA: Mexico in a Post-Migration and Post-Labor Era
DESCRIPTION:Can we speak of Mexico today as having entered a post-migration and post-labor era? What is the place of average Mexicans in the post-NAFTA economy? Is the role imagined for them one only of consumption? If so\, what are the health consequences of this? This presentation examines how trade policy and migration have altered one of the most basic elements of life: sustenance. It tells the binational story of the interdependent food system between Mexico and the U.S. and the consequences for people’s everyday lives and health of those interconnections. \n\nHow and what people eat in Mexico and the United States has transformed in the last two decades\, with massive consequences for public health. This talk is based on Gálvez's book\, a study that examines the connections between food policy and migration\, and their connection to eating practices and health in Mexican communities on both sides of the border. The North American Free Trade Agreement has been closely analyzed at the level of policy and bilateral politics\, including the ways that it has impacted the production and circulation of goods and services in North America. But very little has been done to analyze the micro-level changes to every day life experienced by people in the region. While trade policy has liberalized the flow of goods and currency\, it has been accompanied by greater militarization of borders\, and an illegalization of the circulation of workers. This study examines the current intersection of trade policy\, globalization\, and social programs in Mexico I argue that the rise of diet-related illness in Mexico is a logical outgrowth of trade and development policies and arrangements that favor food security over subsistence agriculture\, “development” over sustainability\, market participation over social welfare\, and ideologies of self-care over public health care.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Perpetual Care: Exploring doctor-patient relationships\, medical experiences\, encounters\, and adjustments of long-term chronic illness
DESCRIPTION:CEW and the Institute for Research on Women & Gender at University of Michigan invite you to join us for a Poetry Reading by Susan Eisenberg on Wednesday\, October 26th from 4:00-5:00 p.m.\, with a reception immediately following. \n\nCEW’s Visiting Social Activist Susan Eisenberg will share selected poems and photographs from her new book Perpetual Care. Eisenberg helps us think differently about the embodied relations of health and affliction\, particularly in contrast to the social construction of women's health and well-being. Her work may hold special resonance for women of color\, who are more likely to live with chronic diseases such as lupus\, which affects Eisenberg. \n\nFrom the Back Cover: Incisive\, lively\, witty\, Perpetual Care brilliantly defies its subject matter. Using an impressive range of forms\, styles\, and metaphors\, Susan Eisenberg draws us deeply into the emotional complexities of a “flock of illnesses.” Whatever your background—as patient and/or provider—you will find this book difficult to put down. The poet’s striking photographs add resonance to both the title and these surprisingly hopeful poems. - Martha Collins\, poet\, Blue Front\n\nRegister here: http://www.cew.umich.edu/events/poetry-reading-susan-eisenberg/20161017

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Integration Paradox: Second-Generation Muslim in the United States
DESCRIPTION:Doing research on Muslims in the United States faces the real challenges that the US Census does not collect data on religion\, while the Muslim sample in surveys\, such as the General Social\nSurvey\, is often too small for meaningful analysis. Thus\, there is little information available on the basic demographic characteristics of the children of Muslim immigrants. In his research with Eric Ketchman. Professor Mehdi Bozorgmehr shows how they overcame these obstacles. He also discusses the nature of integration or assimilation of these new Americans who are the children of Muslim immigrants.

DESCRIPTION:In the late 60's\, Hochster formulated the direct summand conjecture (DSC) in commutative algebra: a regular commutative ring splits off from any finite extension (as a module). SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Analysis/Probability
DESCRIPTION:n this talk\, we introduce and study some basic questions regarding the phase diagram for general mixed p-spin glasses. We focus on the analysis of the Parisi functional\, a non-local\, convex functional whose value is given by the solution of a certain Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman PDE. We present an exact characterization of minimizers\, and use this to study the phase diagram in the temperature-external field plane. In particular\, we present some recent progress on the Replica Symmetric-to-Replica Symmetry Breaking phase transition: we prove that a natural generalization of the de Almeida-Thouless line does give the RS-RSB phase transition in the temperature-external field plane less a compact set. Time permitting\, we will discuss some related work on the complexity of the Replica Symmetry Breaking phase for spherical mixed p-spin glasses. These are joint works with Aukosh Jagannath (Univ. of Toronto). Speaker(s): Ian Tobasco (UM)

SUMMARY:Other:Author's Forum Presents \"Contemporary Korean Art: Tansaekhwa and the Urgency of Method\,\" A Conversation with Joan Kee and David Chung
DESCRIPTION:Joan Kee will read from her book\, followed by a conversation with David Chung.\n\nFrom the publisher: \"A crucial artistic movement of twentieth-century Korea\, Tansaekhwa (monochromatic painting) also became one of its most famous and successful. In this full-color\, richly illustrated account—the first of its kind in English—Joan Kee provides a fresh interpretation of the movement’s emergence and meaning that sheds new light on the history of abstraction\, twentieth-century Asian art\, and contemporary art in general. \n\nThis book provides a comprehensive overview of the most controversial and influential artistic movement in contemporary Korean art. With detailed formal analysis on the important artworks and locating them within the broader historical and intellectual framework\, Joan Kee vividly portrays how Korean artists responded to the international art world and positioned Tansaekhwa as an alternative to Euro-American art. Contemporary Korean Art makes essential reading for anyone interested in the non-Western artists’ negotiations to global art in the twentieth century.\"\n\nJoan Kee is associate professor of art history at the University of Michigan.\n\nDavid Chung is an artist and professor in the Stamps School of Art & Design.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:Film Screening: Never a Bystander (30 min\, 2014)
DESCRIPTION:Never a Bystander tells the story of Holocaust survivor Irene Butter’s extraordinary work with school children. Ms. Butter has spent nearly 30 years inspiring countless children to find the courage to take compassionate action and transcend obstacles. The film depicts Ms. Butter’s poignant connection to Anne Frank\, her own childhood experiences in two concentration camps\, and her choice to adopt an empowered view of her history\, leading to a life of openheartedness\, joy\, and activism.\nThe screening will be followed by a talk back with film director\, Evelyn Neuhaus\, and Irene Butter.\n\nIrene Butter was born in Berlin\, Germany and grew up Jewish in Nazi-occupied Europe. A survivor of two concentration camps\, she came to the U.S. in 1945. After graduating from Queens College in New York\, she earned a PhD in economics from Duke University and taught at the University of Michigan for over 35 years. Since 1987\, she has been visiting schools to teach students about the Holocaust and the lessons she learned during those traumatic years. She co-founded the Wallenberg lecture series honoring global change- makers and the Arab-Jewish women’s dialog group\, Zeitouna. Butter resides with her husband in Ann Arbor.\n\nEvelyn Neuhaus is a first-time filmmaker. She knew Irene Butter\, the subject of Never a Bystander\, for decades before learning that Butter was a Holocaust survivor and hearing her story. In 2007\, Neuhaus was an assistant producer for Refusing to Be Enemies: The Zeitouna Story\, about an Arab-Jewish women’s dialogue group Butter co-founded. She holds an MPH and an MBA from the University of Michigan and resides in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. She is currently exploring topics for her next film.

SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:MSAIL #3: Active Learning and Global Bayesian Optimization
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends\,  Our next MSAIL meeting (#3) will focus on Active Learning andGlobal Bayesian Optimization --- check out these slides for asneak peek! We'll meet at:    3427 EECS\, Wednesday\, 2016-10-26\, 18:00-19:00. The problem is that our loss function is a very complicated functionof our parameters. It's too complicated to compute except by samplingat a few points in parameter-space. Last time\, we discussed a famousheuristic applicable when at each sample we have gradient information. This time\, we'll discuss a learning framework applicable even when welack gradients. The basic idea is: estimate the loss function by a simpler one by doingregression on known (parameter\, loss) pairs. The simpler function willguide queries for further parameters to try. We are led to active learning\,wherein the algorithm asks \"clarifying questions\" by requesting moretraining data. Automatically Learning\,MSAIL

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:DISC Distinguished Lecture. Gender and Sexuality in the Islamic Culture
DESCRIPTION:Shirin Ebadi will argue that despite the cultural\, social\, political\, and governmental differences in Islamic countries\, they all have one thing in common: patriarchal culture. This male-dominated culture is far stronger in Islamic societies than in the Western world and poses serious challenges to the perception of gender and its related laws and regulations.\n\nShe will share her view that in this culture women are considered to be second-class citizens. They are humiliated on the one hand\, but seen as a symbol of family honor on the other. Issues such as honor killings and FGM should be analyzed considering that they happen due to the importance of the family\, which is dependent on women.\n\nWith regards to sexual orientation\, she will also discuss how the patriarchal culture rejects homosexuality. In a same sex relationship for men\, there is a difference between the passive and active partners. Namely\, the passive person would face a harsher reaction from society because he dishonors his masculinity. This is an example of how patriarchal culture justifies itself by any means possible and interprets the holy book in a way that justifies discriminatory laws. \n\nShirin Ebadi is an Iranian lawyer\, former judge\, and human rights activist. On October 10\, 2003\, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her significant and pioneering efforts for democracy and human rights - especially women's\, children's\, and refugee rights. She was the first Iranian to ever receive the prize. Ebadi became Iran's first female judge when she was just 23 years old. She also became the first Iranian and first Muslim woman to be awarded the Nobel peace prize. Despite initially supporting the Iranian revolution like many Iranians\, Ebadi soon became its scourge. Although described as \"the worst nightmare of Iran's hardline clerics\,\" her fight for human rights\, particularly those for women\, is not anti-religion. \"I am against patriarchy\, not Islam\,\" she says. \n \nDemoted to a secretary in her own court by the regime\, which considered women unsuitable to be judges\, she set up her own pro-bono law practice to focus on injustices in the legal system\, acting for political dissidents and on child-abuse cases. Despite being put on a death list by the regime\, Dr. Ebadi became the country's most high-profile human rights activist\, founding the Human Rights Defenders Centre and helping to found the One Million Signatures Campaign. This grassroots campaign collected 1 million signatures from women in support of changing discriminatory laws. The campaign has won numerous international prizes (including the 2009 Reach All Women in War Anna Politkovskaya Award)\, but its members have also been harassed and even jailed. \n \nShirin Ebadi lived in Tehran\, but she has been in exile in the UK since June 2009 due to the increase in persecution of Iranian citizens who are critical of the current regime. In 2004\, she was listed by Forbes Magazine as one of the \"100 most powerful women in the world.\" She is also included in a published list of the \"100 most influential women of all time.\"\n\nEbadi will be introduced by Bridgette Carr\, clinical professor of law at the University of Michigan.\n\nAbstracts reflect the views of our speakers\, which may be varied. We expect a lively discussion.\n\nPart of the series Contemporary Islamic Identities. Visit digitalislam.umich.edu for full series details.

SUMMARY:Performance:Yonder Mountain String Band
DESCRIPTION:Yonder Mountain String Band has always played music by its own set of rules. With their traditional lineup of instruments\, the band may look like a traditional bluegrass band at first glance\, but they’ve created music that transcends any genre. The Colorado-based quintet has crisscrossed the country over the past 17 years playing music reflecting varied influences from the bluegrass of Del McCoury\, Jimmy Martin\, Bill Monroe\, and the Osborne Brothers as well as the punk rock of Bad Religion\, Black Flag\, and the Dead Kennedys. Somewhere in between these two tent poles are early 20th-century classical composers and alternative rock bands like Grandaddy and Postal Service. It’s all funneled through the band’s unique chemistry\, honed since the members first met at an informal club performance in 1998. Fans are drawn to Yonder’s anything-goes attitude\, its humor and passion about music\, and its ability to stretch out live. Yonder Mountain's music is bluegrass for the whole world\, acoustic tunes filled with dazzling chops\, and it’s fun to boot. Maybe that's why this band has outlasted almost all of the others in the first wave of bluegrass-oriented jam bands. Minnesota roots/bluegrass band Pert Near Sandstone is special guest!
