SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Avian Vessels: Mixed Media Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Cincinnati based sculptor Karen Heyl has been professionally sculpting stone since 1984. She is best known for bas-relief limestone sculptures\, but in 2011 she developed an interest in sculpting clay using a similar relief carving technique. Out of this came an artistic exploration and refinement of birds using ceramic vessels as the starting point. Whimsical additions such as tails and beaks give each bird an individual personality. Each bird is perched on an individually carved limestone base to enhance the unique qualities that each bird displays. Heyl’s affinity for nature extends from her art to her love of gardening and the occasional golf game.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Divided Images: Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Jill Ault is an Ann Arbor studio artist working in fiber\, primarily quilts\, with a BFA degree in painting from Eastern Michigan University. Her quilts are constructed of multiple copies of an image: a photograph\, a graphic design or a painting. She digitally prints variations of the image on fabric and divides the copies into many small squares (no two alike). When she carefully reassembles and sews together the squares\, parts of the image seem to move across and down the surface of the quilt. Ault exhibits nationally at fiber and quilt shows\, such as Quilt National in Athens\, Ohio and Fiberart International in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sinking City\, Between Civilization and the Deep Blue Sea
DESCRIPTION:Jakarta\, Indonesia has a serious problem with flooding. The city is literally sinking while also experiencing climate change related sea-level rise. Add to that the yearly heavy rainfall the city sees from the Southeast Asian monsoon and a population that has swelled beyond ten million due to rapid urbanization\, and it’s easy to see why Jakarta’s infrastructure is experiencing significant strain. Jakarta isn’t an isolated example of this perfect storm. It represents the future difficulty that coastal cities all over the world are likely to face.\n\nUnderstanding that lessons learned in Jakarta can have a global impact\, University of Michigan alumus Frank Sedlar set out to help with flood mitigation in Jakarta. Frank earned his master of science degree from Michigan Engineering and also studied the Indonesian language while at the university. Photojournalist and filmmaker Marcin Szczepanski and writer Ben Logan from Michigan Engineering chronicled Frank’s experience while in Jakarta working on modern solutions to Jakarta’s growing problem.\n\nPlease join us for an opening reception on Friday\, October 21 at 5 PM at the International Institute Gallery. Refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Florence Flood\, November 1966
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit focuses on the destruction of Florence during the flood on November 4\, 1966. Among the collections severely impacted by the muddy waters were those in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. Book conservators from the United States and Western Europe were called in to help with the recovery efforts. The exhibit features a British team\, headed by Peter Waters\, which created a washing-drying-mending-rebinding system to deal with tens of thousands of books damaged by the disaster.\n\nThe two most important outcomes of the tragedy are the professional training of library conservators and the establishment of disaster preparedness and response programs.\n\nLearn more and register for the symposium\, The Flood in Florence\, 1966: A Fifty-Year Retrospective\, happening November 3-4\, 2016. https://www.lib.umich.edu/flood-florence-1966-fifty-year-retrospective

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Symposium: Ambiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\nAmbiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural is a symposium and concurrent exhibition that situates contemporary discourses and practices of architecture and landscape within the context of the Postnatural\; the era of climate change\, the Anthropocene\, and altered ecologies. The symposium asks: In a time when humans have been fundamentally displaced from their presumed place of privilege\, philosophically as well as experientially\, should the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture consider displacing themselves as well\, in order to establish new affiliations and avail new ways to approach contemporary questions of design in relation to the environment?\nBy bringing designers and scholars from these fields together the symposium and exhibition will highlight projects and ideas that are engaged with these issues from a variety of perspectives\, ranging from scale and experience to questions of matter. Participants will present research and work that use tactics of mediation to understand\, imagine\, interrupt\, and invent artifacts that exist at the large spatial and slow temporal scale of the Anthropocene.\nAmbiguous Territory will present design ideas and proposals from architects\, artists\, and landscape architects whose work challenges their disciplinary boundaries and long-held anthropocentric orientation and redefines the relationship between built and natural environments in an era of ecological anxiety.\nChairs:       \nKathy Velikov\, Associate Professor at the University of Michigan and principal of RVTR\nCathryn Dwyre\, Visiting Associate Professor at Pratt institute School of Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nChris Perry\, Associate Professor at Rensselaer Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nDavid Salomon\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Ithaca College.\nKeynotes:\nLiam Young\, urbanist\, designer and futurist\; founder of the futures think tank Tomorrows Thoughts Today (tomorrowsthoughtstoday.com)\; the ‘Unknown Fields Division’ (unknownfieldsdivision.com) at the Architectural Association in London\, and the ‘Fiction and Entertainment’ program at SciArc\nDavid Gissen\, author\, historian\, and Professor of Architecture and Visual and Critical Studies at the California College of the Arts and co-director of the Experimental History Project (http://davidgissen.org/)\nFor a full list of speakers and bios\, please visit the Ambiguous Territory symposium web page. \nAmbiguous Territory Symposium Schedule\nAll events in Taubman College Commons unless otherwise noted\nThursday October 5th\n5:00pm\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition Reception\n(Taubman College Gallery)\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: Liam Young\n(Art + Architecture Auditorium)\n \nFriday October 6th (all events occuring in The Commons)\n9:00am\nCoffee\n9:30am\nWelcome: Dean Jonathan Massey\nIntroductory Remarks: Associate Dean of Research and Creative Practice Geoffrey Thün\nSymposium Introduction: Kathy Velikov\n10:00am\nAtmospheric Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Kathy Velikov\nSpeaker 1: Christopher Hight\nSpeaker 2: Lydia Kallipoliti\nSpeaker 3: Sean Lally\nRespondent: Meredith Miller\nRoundtable Discussion\n12:00pm\nLunch Break (lunch not provided)\n1:00pm\nBiologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: David Salomon\nSpeaker 1: Jennifer Peeples\nSpeaker 2: Linsdey french\nSpeaker 3: Ricardo de Ostos\nRespondent: Ellie Abrons\nRoundtable Discussion\n3:00pm\nCoffee Break\n3:30pm\nGeologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Cathryn Dwyre and Chris Perry\nSpeaker 1: Alessandra Ponte\nSpeaker 2: Bradley Cantrell\nSpeaker 3: Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy\nRespondent: Mark Lindquist\nRoundtable Discussion\n5:30pm\nBreak\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: David Gissen\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition \nSeptember 27th – October 18th 2017\nUniversity of Michigan Taubman College Gallery\nDecember 2018 – January 2019\nPratt Manhattan Gallery\, New York

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Kabuki actors were superstars in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japan. They were admired by passionate fans with an insatiable appetite for images of them\, fed by a publishing industry that mass-produced colorful woodblock prints of actors on stage that could be cheaply purchased as souvenirs of or substitutes for a theater experience. Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols\, including off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans’ voyeuristic curiosity about their favorite actors’ lives\, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groupings\, and even death portraits of especially famous actors. This introduction to the visual culture surrounding kabuki theater includes prints by major artists such as Utagawa Toyokuni (1769–1825)\, Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865)\, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861)\, and Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900).\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the William T. and Dora G. Hunter Endowment\, AISIN\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, and the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the Japan Foundation and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Aesthetic Movement
DESCRIPTION:Pictorialism was the first truly international photography movement\, and its practitioners\, among them Alfred Stieglitz\, Edward Steichen and Gertrude Käsebier\, sought to position photography as a legitimate aesthetic art form. They favored soft-focus images that drew upon the conventions of important artists and movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites\, James McNeill Whistler\, Japonisme\, and Art Nouveau are readily seen in the images on view in this exhibition.\n\nIn 1902 Alfred Stieglitz and other Pictorialist photographers founded the Photo-Secession in New York\, with Camera Work as the flagship periodical that published images by the group. Their poetic compositions drawn from contemporary life\, combined with the use of expensive and labor-intensive printing materials such as platinum and gum bichromate\, established these photographs as complex and nuanced works of high artistic quality. The exhibition features work by the principal Pictorialists\, including Stieglitz\, Steichen\, Käsebier\, Clarence White\, Paul Strand\, and Alvin Langdon Coburn.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces: Reconstructing the History of a Chokwe Mask
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Traces focuses on one artwork from the Museum's African holdings: a Chokwe mask that was collected in 1905 near the Angolan city of Dundo by the German explorer Leo Frobenius. Its presence at UMMA today—almost 7\,500 miles away from the context in which it was originally created\, used\, and valued—is the result of a long and tumultuous journey\, spanning a hundred years\, three continents\, and numerous people whose lives are forever connected to the artifact that passed through their hands.\nTraces tells the stories of some of these individuals as it reconstructs the “biography” of the mask. Drawing on the Museum’s African art collection and complemented with national loans\, the exhibition is informed by research that exposes the mask’s many layers and restores some of its historical complexity. Visitors will be able to look closely\, and in great detail\, at this intriguing artwork and its fascinating story.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the James and Vivian Curtis Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Center for the Education of Women's Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Representations of Likeness and Conventions of Portrait Making — Aspects of Japanese Medieval Portrait Painting
DESCRIPTION:The focus of this talk will be on Japanese medieval portrait painting around the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries\, the periods that are known as the Kamakura and Nanbokuchō eras. The genre of the period is highly appreciated in Japanese art history. \n \nSince Japanese portraiture is not well known to English-speaking world\, he will discuss some of the basic aspects of portrait making in medieval Japan. They are: \n \n ・The Motivations for the Production of Portraiture \n ・Who Made Them? Who Owned Them? \n ・Formal analysis of Japanese Medieval Portraits \n ・The Formal Schema of Portrait Painting \n \nand he will examine how the artists of the periods presented the subjects following the visual convention of the day. \n \nMichio Yonekura is an art historian specializing in Japanese painting. After he received his MA at the Tokyo National Institute of Fine Arts and Music\, he joined the Tokyo National Research Institute of Cultural Properties\, where he engaged in research and study of Japanese art for twenty-five years\, serving as Director of the Department of Archives from 1998 to 2001. He then became professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts at Sophia (Jōchi) University in Tokyo\, and taught Japanese art history there until 2011. He has been a visiting professor and given lectures on medieval Japanese portraiture and narrative painting at Heidelberg University\, Waseda University\, and Harvard University. \n \nProfessor Yonekura's primary field of research is medieval Japanese painting. By focusing on the visual representation of the subjects in portraiture\, landscape\, and narrative paintings of the 13th and 14th century (Kamakura-Nanbokuchō periods)\, he has sought to re-examine traditional master narratives of Japanese art history. His research has been published in books and articles on the iconic Jingoji portraits and illustrated biographies of renowned Buddhist monks. His main current research topic is the late 13th century Illustrated Biography of Ippen.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Moving Beyond Indirect Rule: Inca-Chincha Joint Rule at Las Huacas\, Chincha Valley
DESCRIPTION:This talk will address new research on Inca expansion into the coastal Chincha Valley of Peru (AD1474-1532). Many researchers have cited Chincha as a classic case of indirect rule\, but current research\, and research conducted by the Pisco-Chincha project in the 80s\, has demonstrated that it more accurately understood as joint rule. Due to the density of sites and rich ethnohistorical information\, the Chincha Valley has attracted attention from ethnohistorians and archaeologists alike throughout the years. The majority of this research has focused on costal sites due to the Chincha Kingdom’s involvement in prestigious long distance maritime trade\, but in order to understand how the specialist economy of the Chincha polity functioned in the Late Horizon\, the Proyecto de Investigación Arqueológico Las Huacas has targeted excavations at the inland agricultural center of Las Huacas. I will present research from excavations and an architectural analysis of Las Huacas\, and discuss plans for further excavations at Las Huacas in order to understand the administration of the site and the contributions that it made to the Chincha and Inca economies. I will develop this research alongside other models of Inca Imperial expansion that address the relationship between the expressions of Inca power and the institutions that supported them.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Wonderland Gems & Jewels
DESCRIPTION:Betsy Lehndorff’s jewelry is influenced by her life in Hubbard Lake in northeastern Michigan. Using her stone cutting and silversmithing skills\, she takes on six subjects that impact her isolated world: water\, winter\, plants\, critters\, rocks and the heavens. Her work\, often representational and sometimes narrative\, challenges the idea of jewelry as a status symbol. Lehndorff was born and raised in Ann Arbor\, and lived in Colorado until 2012. She is a granddaughter of renowned architect Albert Kahn (Hill Auditorium and the “Old Main” U-M Hospital) and daughter of Dr. Edgar A. Kahn\, who headed the neurosurgery department at the U-M Hospital in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra
DESCRIPTION:I will explain how one can generalize the definition of test ideals \tau to so-called Cartier modules in a functorial way. We obtain several transformation rules with respect to f^! and f_* for various classes of morphisms f: X \to Y\, e.g.\, for f smooth one has an isomorphism f^! \tau = \tau f^!. Part of the reason for working in this generality is that one has an equivalence with constructible etale p-torsion sheaves up to nilpotence of Cartier modules and these results further support the idea that the test module construction relates to etale nearby cycles similarly to the complex situation where multiplier ideals relate to complex nearby cycles.\nThis is joint work with Manuel Blickle. DESCRIPTION:The classical Stolarsky principle states that minimizing the L^2 discrepancy of a finite point-set on the sphere with respect to the spherical caps is equivalent to maximizing the sum of the Euclidean distances between the points in the set\, thus establishing a connection between discrepancy and energy optimization problems. We shall discuss generalizations and other versions of this principle\, and some applications to problem of optimization\, combinatorial geometry etc. In particular\, we find that there is a peculiar difference between the energies defined by the Euclidean and geodesic distances on the sphere. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM Theory | Gelation and Densification of Cement Hydrates: A Soft Matter in Construction
DESCRIPTION:5-8 % of the global human CO2 production comes from the production of cement\, concrete main binder. The material strength emerges through the development\, once in contact with water\, of calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) gels that literally glue together the final compound. Current industrial research aims at exploring alternative and more environmentally friendly chemical compositions while enhancing rheology and mechanics\, to overcome the many technological challenges and guarantee concrete standards. Identifying the fundamental mechanisms that control the gel properties at the early stages of hydration and setting is crucial\, although challenging\, because of far-from-equilibrium conditions\, closely intertwined to the evolution of the chemical environment\, that are a hallmark of cement hydration. \n\nI will discuss a recently developed statistical physics approach\, which allows us to investigate the gel formation under the out-of-equilibrium conditions typical of cement hydration and the role of the nano-scale structure in C-S-H mechanics upon hardening. Our approach\, combining MonteCarlo and Molecular Dynamics simulations\, unveils for the first time how some distinctive features of the kinetics of cement hydration can be related to the nano-scale effective interactions and to the changes in the morphology of the gels. The novel emerging picture is that the changes of the physico-chemical environment\, which dictate the evolution of the effective interactions\, specifically favor the gel formation and its continuous densification. Our findings provide new handles to design properties of this complex material and\, with an extensive comparison of numerical findings for the hardened paste with experiments ranging from SANS\, SEM\, adsorption/desorption of N2 and water to nano-indentation\, we gain new\, fundamental insights into the microscopic origin of the properties measured. \n\nK. SUMMARY:Other:Deconstructing Biological Polymers with Chemical and Spectroscopic Tools
DESCRIPTION:Non-covalent biological polymers play important roles in cellular function and disease. These include chromatin\, a protein-DNA polymer that represents the functional form of the genome\, and amyloid fibrils\, protein-protein assemblies often associated with neurodegenerative disorders. Unraveling the forces and interactions that define the structure and function of such polymers is still a tremendous challenge for structural biology as it requires the ability to span many length and time scales\, and the capability to construct relevant samples that represent the complexity\, dynamics and multivalency of functional biological entities. In the first part of this presentation\, I will describe spectroscopic approaches based on solid-state NMR that were used to determine the atomic-resolution structure of a model amyloid fibril. This structure provides a basis for understanding amyloid fibril heterogeneity and their extraordinary thermodynamic stability\, characteristics with important implications in disease. In the second part\, I will present a chemical biology toolbox that allows the efficient construction of chemically well-defined designer chromatin arrays. Combined with H/D exchange\, NMR\, and fluorescence-based experiments\, these synthetic polymers enabled the investigation of chromatin structure and dynamics as a function of post-translational modifications such as ubiquitin. Our results suggest novel mechanisms of chromatin polymer decompaction\, with important implications for gene regulation and access to genetic information in the cell. \n\nGalia Debelouchina (Princeton University)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Differential Equations
DESCRIPTION:For large classes of dispersive equations\, it has been conjectured that the solution will eventually break up as finite sum of solitons plus linear dispersion. This conjecture is open for most equations\, but for nonlinear wave equations\, there are better understanding of the mechanism for the soliton resolution\, using both arguments of a geometric flavor and a strong de-coupling mechanism for the dispersive part and solitons\, called ``channel of energy inequality\". In this talk\, I will explain these ideas in the context of the recent proof of soliton resolution along a sequence of times. Joint work with Duyckaerts\, Kenig\, Merle. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Development
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis paper develops an instrumental-variables methodology for estimating production-function coefficients using exchange rates as a source of exogenous variation in input prices. We use rich data from the Colombian manufacturing census\, which includes information on prices and physical quantities of all outputs and inputs of firms\, in conjunction with customs records on all import and export transactions of Colombian firms. Preliminary results indicate that exchange-rate movements in source countries generate sufficient across-firm variation in input usage to estimate production functions of Colombian firms\, and that our estimates differ from those of proxy-variable methods currently dominant in the literature.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar: What is the role of phenotypic differentiation\, if any\, for explaining species abundances in tree communities?
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nNatural communities are composed of a few common and many rare species. This pattern is one of the few universal rules in ecology and is especially pronounced in species-rich ecosystems\, where most of the species display extremely low \nabundances. Although there is a long-standing interest in this pattern and the \ndevelopment of ecological and statistical models\, there is still no consensus. Here I argue that differences between species and individuals in their phenotypes are \nfundamentally important for understanding the drivers of species abundance. I \nprovide evidence to support this argument from my research concerning patterns of species abundance in tropical tree communities. The work uses statistical models to interrogate species and individual-level trait information with respect to abundance in natural communities from Asia and the Americas. The results show that (1) the species and trait composition of plant communities is driven by a combination of opposing ecological forces acting on intra- and inter-specific levels and that this ultimately results in differential species abundances\; (2) The magnitude of the phenotypic variation in natural assemblages is variable itself across species and related with species relative abundance\; (3) Rare species tend to occupy the periphery of the functional space of local communities. Overall\, my results indicate that phenotypic differences are key for our understanding of how species-environment relationships produce differential demographic rates that ultimately drive differential species abundance. Furthermore\, ecological interactions occur at the individual level and considering individual-level trait information\, which is frequently ignored in trait-based ecology\, in the context of community assembly opens a new avenue of research for addressing foundational questions in ecology.\n\nLight refreshments served at 4 p.m.\n\nView YouTube video of seminar: https://youtu.be/5GE1q31A4jc

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FALL 2016 COMMUNICATION & MEDIA SPEAKER SERIES From the 7/7 London Bombings to the Failed Turkish Coup: How Have News Organizations Adapted to the Realities of Eyewitness Media
DESCRIPTION:In July 2005\, 52 people were killed when four separate explosions rocked London during the morning rush hour. Survivors escaped through underground tunnels capturing footage on their camera phones. It was the first time the BBC led a bulletin with 'user-generated content'. In July 2016\, the failed Turkish coup was caught on Periscope and Facebook Live by hundreds of people picking up their smartphones and broadcasting live. This lecture will examine the last decade of social newsgathering\, highlighting what has changed and what hasn't. There will be a discussion of the logistics of social discovery and verification as well as the ethical considerations of protecting eyewitnesses when publishing this type of content\, and ensuring journalists and audiences are not impacted by the increasingly graphic imagery that is emerging from breaking news events.\n\nClaire Wardle is the Research Director at Columbia University's Tow Center for Digital Journalism. She is also the co-founder of Eyewitness Media Hub\, a non-profit initiative committed to providing content creators and publishers with continuing research and resources. She is one of the world’s experts on user-generated content\, and has led two substantial research projects investigating how it is handled by news organizations. In 2009\, she was asked by BBC News to develop their Social Newsgathering and Verification training program. She went on to train over 3000 journalists in newsrooms around the world. She was also the Director of News Services for Storyful\, and Senior Social Media Office at the UN Agency for Refugees (UNHCR). Wardle holds a PhD in Communications and an MA in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania. She also sits on the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on the Future of Information and Entertainment.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:John G. Topliss Eighth Annual Award Lecture \"Adventures in Cardiovascular Drug Discovery: New Frontiers and Lessons Learned\"
DESCRIPTION:Cardiovascular disease is the largest cause of death and disability in developed countries. A common component of the end stage of these diseases is thromboembolic disorders which account for over 50% of cardiovascular related deaths. This large unmet medical need resulted in intense activity to discover and develop new antithrombotic drugs. Over the past few decades\, drug discovery directed at the treatment and prevention of thromboembolic diseases has been challenged by the need to balance robust efficacy with exquisite safety. Perhaps the most impactful advance to date in the area of oral anticoagulants\, has been the recent introduction into clinical practice of the new class of orally bioavailable small molecule factor Xa (FXa) inhibitors. At Bristol-Myers Squibb our efforts culminated in the discovery of Eliquis® (apixaban)\, a novel oral FXa inhibitor. This presentation will highlight the key learnings from the discovery efforts which led to Eliquis\, and applications of these learnings to the design of small molecule Factor XIa inhibitors.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series | If I Can K-Pop Dance\, I’ll Be a Part of Your Beauty Revolution
DESCRIPTION:This lecture contains mature and explicit content.\n\nRHEE will discuss the evolution of her politically engaged work as an artist and her dogged pursuit of cultivating creativity and playful improvisation in her artistic practice. She will touch on past work and influences to frame the context of her current interdisciplinary project\, called “Modern Beauty Ideals in the Age of Digital Technology or If I can K-Pop dance\, I’ll be part of your beauty revolution.” This work takes the form of photography\, drawing\, sculpture\, video\, internet art\, installation and social intervention to engage hetero-patriarchal global beauty ideals and accompanying digital technology from a transnational feminist perspective.\n\nLiving and working in Berlin\, Germany since 2009\, kate-hers RHEE was born in Seoul\, South Korea and raised in racially segregated working class Mount Clemens\, Michigan. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from the University of California- Irvine\, where she was a Graduate Studies Diversity and Jacob K. Javits fellow. Artist and Art Center Pasadena professor Tom Knechtel says of RHEE’s interdisciplinary practice\, \n\n“Whether she is trying to re-insert herself back into her birth society of Korea or jamming the culinary tropes of German society with Korean cooking\, revealing the underlying racism behind a much-beloved German treat\, or mining the double entendres in an image of two pug dogs\, she directly addresses the complexity of social and racial identities in ways that are funny and scathing\, all at once.” \n\nRHEE’s work has been shown nationally and internationally with recent exhibitions and interactive projects at British Museum - London (2016)\, Asian Art Museum - Berlin (2016-2017)\, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2016) Group Intervention Video - Montreal (2015)\, Künstlerhaus Dortmund (2015)\, Humboldt Lab Dahlem Museum - Berlin (2015)\, Korean Cultural Service - New York (2015)\, Berlinische Galerie - Museum for Modern Art (2014) and SOMArts - San Francisco (2014). \n\nShe has been honored with several residency fellowships\, including from MacDowell Colony and Millay Colony for the Arts. Her work has been recognised by the AHL Foundation - New York with the 1st Prize of the Visual Arts Competition (2014) and has been funded by the Puffin Foundation (2015) and the Berlin Senate with a Travel Grant (2016) and the Visual Artist Fellowship (2015). RHEE’s work was featured in the essay by scholar Mei Heberer in “Back to Myself: Negotiating German Belonging and Transnational Asianness in Experimental Video\,” in The Autobiographical Turn in German Documentary and Experimental Film\, edited by Robin Curtis and Angelica Fenner (2014). Her current project will be featured in a chapter of an upcoming publication\, The (Geo) Politics of Beauty: Race\, Transnationalism\, and Neoliberalism in South Korean Beauty Culture\, by scholar Sharon Heijin Lee.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology
DESCRIPTION:For a hyperbolic knot or link K the volume density is a ratio of hyperbolic volume to crossing number\, and the determinant density is the ratio of 2\pi\log(det(K)) to the crossing number. We explore limit points of both densities for families of links approaching semi-regular biperiodic alternating links. We explicitly realize and relate the limits for both using techniques from geometry\, topology\, graph theory\, dimer models\, and Mahler measure of two-variable polynomials. This is joint work with Ilya Kofman and Jessica Purcell. Speaker(s): Abhijit Champanerkar (CUNY)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FAST Lecture: Women Slaves and the Bacchic Murals in the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii
DESCRIPTION:The extraordinary Bacchic murals in the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii have eluded definitive interpretation by modern viewers since their discovery in 1909. Most scholarly attempts to understand their meaning have adopted the perspective of elite viewers and have proposed various layers of potential significance that range from the mythological and prophetic to the cultic and nuptial to the social and theatrical. They also focus on the dominant figures: the so-called “Domina\,” “Bride” and/or multiple figures thought to represent the “Initiate.” With few exceptions\, such interpretations presume some kind of relation between the imagery and Greek antecedents.\n \nIn contrast\, this presentation considers meanings that the murals may have held for non-elite viewers—in particular\, the female slaves of the household. By focusing on those women who play various supporting roles in the visual drama depicted on the frieze\, and by assuming that a number of the cultic activities portrayed would have resonated with the work of daily life performed by female slaves in the villa\, this talk proposes that those household slaves identified with the women on the walls through the lens of their own experiences as slaves. Reading the Bacchic murals within this non-elite framework adds a new layer of potential meaning to these famous works of Roman art.\n\nReception 5:30 pm\, Lecture 6:00 pm.\n\nFAST lectures are free and open to the public.
