DESCRIPTION:STEM Society collaborates with Slauson Middle School for tutoring opportunities where University of Michigan club members are transported to Slauson (5 min car ride\, or 15 min bus ride).  The tutoring opportunities take place on a weekly basis with a schedule made available to all members via a google doc.  The tutoring consists of helping students with any homework questions that they are struggling with\, and course material that they need additional practice with.  This is a wonderful opportunity to work with an amazing group of kids who are driven and making a conscious effort to improve academically.There are a range of tutoring opportunities available including in-class math help\, special needs help\, 1-on-1 tutoring\, and mass support after-school tutoring. Tutoring session are available for sign-up:Monday: 7:30am - 3:30pmTuesday: 7:30am - 5pmWednesday: 7:30am - 3:30pmThursday: 7:30am - 5pmFriday: 7:30am - 3:30pmThe amount of involvement can vary from week to week depending on your personal schedule\, and there is no long-term commitment.  As a Wolverine you are in a unique position to be able to influence the next generation in a very positive way.  Start giving back to the community today\, and strengthening the education of our youth.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Austria: Gelatin Silver Prints
DESCRIPTION:Howard Bond\, who studied with Ansel Adams\, made the photographs in this exhibition during multiple trips to Austria with a 4”x 5” film camera\, resulting in gelatin silver prints. The time period was 1976-1978\, near the beginning of his career as a full time fine art photographer\, after having been a Senior Research Associate in the U-M School of Public Health. Bond\, whose photographs are in the collections of more than 30 museums in the United States and Europe\, has had over 60 one-man and 40 group exhibitions. The recipient of a Michigan Council for the Arts Creative Artist Grant\, he has published 2 books and 23 limited edition portfolios of prints.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Avian Vessels: Mixed Media Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Cincinnati based sculptor Karen Heyl has been professionally sculpting stone since 1984. She is best known for bas-relief limestone sculptures\, but in 2011 she developed an interest in sculpting clay using a similar relief carving technique. Out of this came an artistic exploration and refinement of birds using ceramic vessels as the starting point. Whimsical additions such as tails and beaks give each bird an individual personality. Each bird is perched on an individually carved limestone base to enhance the unique qualities that each bird displays. Heyl’s affinity for nature extends from her art to her love of gardening and the occasional golf game.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Divided Images: Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Jill Ault is an Ann Arbor studio artist working in fiber\, primarily quilts\, with a BFA degree in painting from Eastern Michigan University. Her quilts are constructed of multiple copies of an image: a photograph\, a graphic design or a painting. She digitally prints variations of the image on fabric and divides the copies into many small squares (no two alike). When she carefully reassembles and sews together the squares\, parts of the image seem to move across and down the surface of the quilt. Ault exhibits nationally at fiber and quilt shows\, such as Quilt National in Athens\, Ohio and Fiberart International in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania.

DESCRIPTION:Candra Boggs is an art teacher and two-dimensional mixed media artist. She has been actively working as a traveling artist and teacher for over twelve years. Her work is constructed from her original two-dimensional drawings\, paintings\, prints and photography. She cuts the 2-D works into a variety of shapes and then collages them back into quilt-like mosaics. Boggs loves Michigan and has been vacationing and participating in art shows for over ten years in the great state. Up most mornings before 5:00 am\, she works in the studio with the birds and the morning light\, all before waking three small children.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Florence Flood\, November 1966
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit focuses on the destruction of Florence during the flood on November 4\, 1966. Among the collections severely impacted by the muddy waters were those in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. Book conservators from the United States and Western Europe were called in to help with the recovery efforts. DESCRIPTION:Documenting Detroit is a collection of photographs taken by students from the College for Creative Studies during the 1970s and 1980s. Under the guidance of Detroit photographer and photography instructor Bill Rauhauser\, students turned the urban landscape into works of art.\n\nThis exhibition offers a select sample of a vast collection that includes nearly 1\,250 photographs of Detroit\, from churches to construction sites\, grocery stores to warehouses\, hospitals to schools\, and many others. The collection also provides a snapshot of visual symbols of Detroit during 20th century\, including the Michigan Central Train Station\, the J. L. Hudson’s Department Store on Woodward Avenue\, construction of the Renaissance Center and Joe Louis Arena\, and the abandonment of Poletown and the Warehouse District. DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\nAmbiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural is a symposium and concurrent exhibition that situates contemporary discourses and practices of architecture and landscape within the context of the Postnatural\; the era of climate change\, the Anthropocene\, and altered ecologies. The symposium asks: In a time when humans have been fundamentally displaced from their presumed place of privilege\, philosophically as well as experientially\, should the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture consider displacing themselves as well\, in order to establish new affiliations and avail new ways to approach contemporary questions of design in relation to the environment?\nBy bringing designers and scholars from these fields together the symposium and exhibition will highlight projects and ideas that are engaged with these issues from a variety of perspectives\, ranging from scale and experience to questions of matter. DESCRIPTION:Kabuki actors were superstars in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japan. They were admired by passionate fans with an insatiable appetite for images of them\, fed by a publishing industry that mass-produced colorful woodblock prints of actors on stage that could be cheaply purchased as souvenirs of or substitutes for a theater experience. Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols\, including off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans’ voyeuristic curiosity about their favorite actors’ lives\, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groupings\, and even death portraits of especially famous actors. This introduction to the visual culture surrounding kabuki theater includes prints by major artists such as Utagawa Toyokuni (1769–1825)\, Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865)\, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861)\, and Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900).\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the William T. and Dora G. DESCRIPTION:Pictorialism was the first truly international photography movement\, and its practitioners\, among them Alfred Stieglitz\, Edward Steichen and Gertrude Käsebier\, sought to position photography as a legitimate aesthetic art form. They favored soft-focus images that drew upon the conventions of important artists and movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites\, James McNeill Whistler\, Japonisme\, and Art Nouveau are readily seen in the images on view in this exhibition.\n\nIn 1902 Alfred Stieglitz and other Pictorialist photographers founded the Photo-Secession in New York\, with Camera Work as the flagship periodical that published images by the group. Their poetic compositions drawn from contemporary life\, combined with the use of expensive and labor-intensive printing materials such as platinum and gum bichromate\, established these photographs as complex and nuanced works of high artistic quality. The exhibition features work by the principal Pictorialists\, including Stieglitz\, Steichen\, Käsebier\, Clarence White\, Paul Strand\, and Alvin Langdon Coburn.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces: Reconstructing the History of a Chokwe Mask
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Traces focuses on one artwork from the Museum's African holdings: a Chokwe mask that was collected in 1905 near the Angolan city of Dundo by the German explorer Leo Frobenius. Its presence at UMMA today—almost 7\,500 miles away from the context in which it was originally created\, used\, and valued—is the result of a long and tumultuous journey\, spanning a hundred years\, three continents\, and numerous people whose lives are forever connected to the artifact that passed through their hands.\nTraces tells the stories of some of these individuals as it reconstructs the “biography” of the mask. Drawing on the Museum’s African art collection and complemented with national loans\, the exhibition is informed by research that exposes the mask’s many layers and restores some of its historical complexity. Visitors will be able to look closely\, and in great detail\, at this intriguing artwork and its fascinating story.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the James and Vivian Curtis Endowment. DESCRIPTION:David Tarver currently serves as founder and President of the Urban Entrepreneurship Initiative.  David is a highly successful technology business executive with an incredible entrepreneurial journey and amazing success in corporate R&D\, technology business startup\, and social entrepreneurship. He began his professional career as a Member of Technical Staff and Group Supervisor at the legendary AT&T Bell Laboratories. In 1983\, David launched Telecom Analysis Systems\, Inc.\, a high-tech telecommunications instrumentation business. He sold that company twelve years later for $30 million and then\, working as Group President for the buyer\, built a telecommunications business with a market value in excess of $2 billion.\n\nDavid left the corporate sector in 1999 with a hunger for community service. In 2001\, he founded the Red Bank Education and Development Initiative\, a community-based not-for-profit organization that catalyzed dramatic improvements in academic performance and opportunities for children in Red Bank\, New Jersey.  David has served on numerous civic and nonprofit boards—including the Board of Education in Red Bank\, New Jersey\; the National Advisory Committee for the University of Michigan (U-M) College of Engineering\; the National Commission on NAEP 12th Grade Assessment and Reporting\; the U-M Alumni Association board of directors and several other civic and not-for-profit organization boards.  David also endowed the Fred and Louise Tarver Scholarship Fund at the University of Michigan\, which provides a full four-year tuition scholarship to an incoming engineering student.\n\nDavid holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan. He has served as a lecturer in the U-M College of Engineering – Center for Entrepreneurship since 2012\, and during the 2015-2016 academic year designed and taught a new course entitled “Urban Entrepreneurship.” In 2012\, he published the book “Proving Ground: A Memoir\,” which details his entrepreneurial journey from childhood dream to international success.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:White House Police Data Initiative: Building Trust through Data Transparency
DESCRIPTION:In May 2015\, President Obama announced the launch of the White House Police Data Initiative\, working with 24 police departments to leverage data on police-citizen interactions (e.g.\, officer-involved shootings\, use of force\, body cam video\, and stops) to increase transparency and accountability\, build community trust\, and enable innovation.\n\nDuring this session\, Clarence Wardell\, co-lead of the Police Data Initiative\, will discuss the growth of the initiative to include 129 law enforcement agencies across the country\, some of the early successes and challenges\, and how civic technologists and agencies can work together to achieve common goals. Additionally\, Wardell will discuss some of the other tech and innovation initiatives of the Obama Administration\, including his time as a Presidential Innovation Fellow and currently as a member of the U.S. Digital Service at the White House.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\n\nCurrently a member of the U.S. Digital Service at the White House\, Dr. Clarence Wardell III was previously a Presidential Innovation Fellow who worked with the U.S. Department of Energy and the White House on open data initiatives. His work included co-organizing and leading the White House Police Data Initiative\, an effort aimed at using open data as a means to increase trust and engagement between law enforcement agencies and citizens. \n\nClarence Wardell is a researcher and social entrepreneur who is passionate about using technology to increase and enhance civic engagement. Previously\, he was a Research Scientist with CNA Corporation’s Safety & Security group\, where he provided analytical support to emergency management and law enforcement organizations to improve response outcomes. In that capacity\, he also led CNA’s research on the adoption and use of new media technologies by emergency managers. In addition\, he has developed several civic-focused software products\, including Trivial Impact\, a political trivia mobile game\, and tinyGive\, a social media-based microphilanthropy platform that was acquired in 2016.\n\nWardell\, who is also an affiliate with Harvard’s Berkman Center for Internet & Society and Council on Foreign Relations term member\, holds a BSE in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan and a PhD from the Georgia Institute of Technology's School of Industrial and Systems Engineering.\n\nThis event is sponsored by the School of Information Citizen Interaction Design program.

DESCRIPTION:Justin Pearch is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in Politics and International Studies & Research Associate of St John's College Cambridge\, University of Cambridge\nHe completed his doctorate at Oxford in 2011 on political mobilisation in the Angolan civil war. He was subsequently an ESRC postdoctoral fellow at SOAS\, University of London. Before embarking upon his doctorate\, Justin worked as a journalist in South Africa\, Angola and the UK.\n\nResearch Interests\n\nJustin Pearce is conducting research on the roots and the character of political legitimacy in contemporary southern Africa\, using a comparative case study of Angola and Mozambique. His current research is supported by a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship\, part funded by the Newton Trust. His broader research interests include the politics and history of Lusophone Africa and of southern Africa\, with a thematic interest in civil conflict\, peace making\, the continuities between wartime and peacetime politics\, and the politics of memory and memorialisation. DESCRIPTION:This symposium explores the graphic history publication format and features Rafe Blaufarb\, Liz Clarke\, and Charles Cavaliere\, the collaborative team behind Inhuman Traffick: The International Struggle Against the Transatlantic Slave Trade: A Graphic History. Chaired by Paulina Alberto. \n\nRafe Blaufarb is a professor of history at Florida State University. He received his PhD in 1996 from the University of Michigan. Besides Inhuman Traffick\, his recent work includes The Politics of Fiscal Privilege in Provence\, 1530s-1830s.\n\nLiz Clarke is an illustrator based in Cape Town\, South Africa. Her artwork has appeared in magazines\, games\, and books\, including Inhuman Traffick and three other graphic histories. \n\nCharles Cavaliere is an executive editor in world history and classics at Oxford University Press. He has overseen production of four graphic history publications\, including Inhuman Traffick.\n\nPaulina Alberto is an associate professor of Spanish\, Portuguese\, and history at the University of Michigan. Recent publications include Rethinking Race in Modern Argentina (co-edited\, with Eduardo Elena) and Terms of Inclusion: Black Intellectuals in Twentieth-Century Brazil.\n\nFree and open to the public. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Reflections on My Twenty Years Since Leaving UM
DESCRIPTION:I started my post-UM career as an assistant professor at Howard University where I received the NSF CAREER award and started a laboratory for fiber-optic lasers and amplifiers. I also performed time-resolved hard x-ray experiments at the MHATT-CAT beamlines at the Advanced Photon Source. To balance a two-body career\, I left Howard to join the Science and Technology Division at Corning Incorporated. There I continued my fiber-optic research though the inflation of the telecom industrial bubble and extended Corning’s fiber-optic output power capabilities from mW to kW after the bubble burst. I also spent time in a global customer-facing technology role to help launch Gorilla glass— where I participated in the product’s revenue growth from $20 million to >$1B. Most recently\, I was appointed the director for Corning’s West Coast Technology Center in Silicon Valley.

In her undergrad\, she was heavily involved in campus LGBTQIA community affairs\, especially for queer students of color. At present\, her research focuses on contemporary African American literature with a focus on black queer fiction and narratives of resistance by trans women and gender non-conforming people of color.\n\nVidhya Aravind is a first year Master's student at the University of Michigan School of Information. Her academic interests are in online safety of marginalized people and the facilitation of online space creation for small queer and trans communities. DESCRIPTION:“We will warm-up through physical actions that cause us to sweat\, think\, see\, hear\, and feel more rigorously as we simultaneously tune our attention into our surroundings. We will utilize the energy generated to find unusual\, yet natural portals into an infinite range of possibilities within our imagination to concoct worlds\, scenarios\, and physical scores that illuminate the seemingly unseen. We will learn how to physically enter and exit these worlds to generate architectures of the imagination.” The culmination of the class will have dancers embody a segment of movement from Graczyk’s solo Beast\, which she premiered this past April in New York.\n\nEach Modern Lab session features a different guest artist teaching a master class and sections from their repertory. This panorama of the contemporary dance field is presented to broaden the students’ awareness of potential career possibilities. Each guest artist conducts a 30-minute technique class/warm-up and then teaches repertory that is performed by the class.\n\nIn the final 15 minutes\, faculty coordinator Bill De Young conducts a Q & A with each artist\, discussing their career\; their recommendations for transitioning from student to professional\, and what they look for when they audition dancers for their projects.

Using her stone cutting and silversmithing skills\, she takes on six subjects that impact her isolated world: water\, winter\, plants\, critters\, rocks and the heavens. Her work\, often representational and sometimes narrative\, challenges the idea of jewelry as a status symbol. Lehndorff was born and raised in Ann Arbor\, and lived in Colorado until 2012. She is a granddaughter of renowned architect Albert Kahn (Hill Auditorium and the “Old Main” U-M Hospital) and daughter of Dr. Edgar A. Kahn\, who headed the neurosurgery department at the U-M Hospital in the 1960s.

DESCRIPTION:A determining form for a dissipative PDE is an ODE in a certain trajectory space where the solutions on the global attractor of the PDE are readily recognized.  It is an ODE in the true sense of defining a vector field which is (globally) Lipschitz.  In this talk we focus on one type of determining form where solutions on the global attractor of the PDE are identified as steady states of the form.  This determining form is related to data assimilation by feedback nudging\, which is one way to inject a coarse-grain time series into the model in order to recover the matching full solution.  We show that for a given initial trajectory\, the dynamics of this determining form reduces to that of a one-dimensional ODE.  We prove lower bounds on the rates of convergence to trajectories in the attractor of the original system\, and demonstrate numerically that they are achieved.  Applications have been made to the 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes\, damped-driven nonlinear Schroedinger\, damped-driven Korteweg-de Vries and surface quasigeostrophic equations. DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I will discuss the combinatorics of the affine Grassmannian\, the affine flag variety and the central degeneration\, with an emphasis on some convex polytopes involved. The affine Grassmannian and affine flag variety are the infinite-dimensional analogs of the ordinary Grassmannian and flag variety. The central degeneration is the degeneration that shows up in local models of Shimura varieties and Gaitsgory's central sheaves. DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThis paper examines the impact of market organization on efficiency and social welfare in the electricity market. Wholesale electricity markets exhibit two basic forms of organization: the decentralized bilateral trading market and the centralized auction market. While the centralized market may improve efficiency through information aggregation\, it may also reduce efficiency by exacerbating the incentive faced by market participants to exercise market power. Taking advantage of Texas’ transition from a decentralized to a centralized market\, I show that the informational effect dominates the effect of market power. Using detailed data on generation quantity\, I find high-cost generators were displaced by low-cost generators in production. In the nine months following the transition\, the total generation cost was reduced by $30.7 million\, relative to the counterfactual. Although the centralized market led to private cost saving\, it also had an unintended effect on emissions. For moderate estimates of marginal damages\, the increased external costs of emissions completely offset the productive efficiency gain.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Manganese: Minerals\, Microbes\, and the Evolution of Oxygenic Photosynthesis
DESCRIPTION:Oxygenic photosynthesis fundamentally transformed our planet by releasing molecular oxygen and altering major biogeochemical cycles\, and this exceptional metabolism requires manganese to function. Not only is manganese essential for producing oxygen\, but manganese oxides are also incredibly diagnostic for the presence of environmental oxygen. Thus the history of manganese oxidation recorded in the geologic record provides a valuable perspective on our planet’s environmental past\, the ancient availability of oxygen\, and the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis. I will present analyses on manganese minerals in the rock record using microscale techniques to extract primary geochemical signals and process-based laboratory experiments measuring microbial mineral products to interpret ancient geobiological signals. This talk will demonstrate how the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis and the activity of metal oxide-reducing metabolisms are linked to and recorded in the rich complexity of the manganese mineralogical record.

DESCRIPTION:Department of Physics & Astronomy\n\nAbstract:\nMany essential biological processes depend on the interaction of lipids\, proteins\, and carbohydrates at length scales that are unresolvable by conventional optical microscopes. We are developing novel optical methods to elucidate the interdependence of molecular organization\, lipid phase\, and membrane curvature. With near-field fluorescence cross-correlation spectroscopy\, we have resolved the single-molecule cross-linking of membrane proteins in the initial stage of an immunological response on living cells. With polarized localization microscopy\, we have measured membrane curvature as small as 20 nm radii of curvature and correlated molecular reorganization. Recently\, \nwe have discovered that cholera toxin subunit B self-assembles to form nanoscale membrane buds in quasi-one component bilayers to facilitate its immobilization and internalization into cells. We will discuss the physics of these optical methods and what they have taught us about the biophysics of membranes.

DESCRIPTION:“Royal Rage in Rajputana: The Politics of Anger in Mughal India\" explores the issue of anger and kingship in early modern India\, drawing on a warrior chronicle composed ca. 1600. Unlike earlier texts in Sanskrit which deplore the emotion of anger\, this vernacular work from Rajasthan depicts kings as frequently  expressing anger toward their subordinates – whether this is legitimate or not is a critical point for analysis. While the deployment of anger for political purposes in Rajasthan’s martial culture is a departure from traditional Brahmin norms.\n\nCynthia Talbot\, who received her BA and MA degrees from the University of Michigan (and a PhD from the University of Wisconsin)\, is an Associate Professor of History and Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. While her research focuses on late medieval and early modern South Asia\, she teaches more broadly\, including a survey of the premodern world. Talbot’s most recent book is The Last Hindu Emperor: Prithviraj Chauhan and the Indian Present\, 1200-2000 (Cambridge University Press\, 2016).

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Newton-Cartan theory has experienced something of a renaissance in recent years. On the one hand\, (i) physicists have been working on applying Newton-Cartan holography to condensed matter physics\; and on the other hand\, (ii) philosophers have been debating the relationship between so-called \"Maxwell spacetime\" and the celebrated Trautman recovery theorem. I shall argue that there is an unexpected connection between these topics: I will use this connection to prove a new generalization of the Trautman recovery theorem\, which will in turn be used to shed light on (ii).
