SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Avian Vessels: Mixed Media Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Cincinnati based sculptor Karen Heyl has been professionally sculpting stone since 1984. She is best known for bas-relief limestone sculptures\, but in 2011 she developed an interest in sculpting clay using a similar relief carving technique. Out of this came an artistic exploration and refinement of birds using ceramic vessels as the starting point. Whimsical additions such as tails and beaks give each bird an individual personality. Each bird is perched on an individually carved limestone base to enhance the unique qualities that each bird displays. Heyl’s affinity for nature extends from her art to her love of gardening and the occasional golf game.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Divided Images: Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Jill Ault is an Ann Arbor studio artist working in fiber\, primarily quilts\, with a BFA degree in painting from Eastern Michigan University. Her quilts are constructed of multiple copies of an image: a photograph\, a graphic design or a painting. She digitally prints variations of the image on fabric and divides the copies into many small squares (no two alike). When she carefully reassembles and sews together the squares\, parts of the image seem to move across and down the surface of the quilt. Ault exhibits nationally at fiber and quilt shows\, such as Quilt National in Athens\, Ohio and Fiberart International in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Florence Flood\, November 1966
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit focuses on the destruction of Florence during the flood on November 4\, 1966. Among the collections severely impacted by the muddy waters were those in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. Book conservators from the United States and Western Europe were called in to help with the recovery efforts. The exhibit features a British team\, headed by Peter Waters\, which created a washing-drying-mending-rebinding system to deal with tens of thousands of books damaged by the disaster.\n\nThe two most important outcomes of the tragedy are the professional training of library conservators and the establishment of disaster preparedness and response programs.\n\nLearn more and register for the symposium\, The Flood in Florence\, 1966: A Fifty-Year Retrospective\, happening November 3-4\, 2016. https://www.lib.umich.edu/flood-florence-1966-fifty-year-retrospective

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Symposium: Ambiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\nAmbiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural is a symposium and concurrent exhibition that situates contemporary discourses and practices of architecture and landscape within the context of the Postnatural\; the era of climate change\, the Anthropocene\, and altered ecologies. The symposium asks: In a time when humans have been fundamentally displaced from their presumed place of privilege\, philosophically as well as experientially\, should the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture consider displacing themselves as well\, in order to establish new affiliations and avail new ways to approach contemporary questions of design in relation to the environment?\nBy bringing designers and scholars from these fields together the symposium and exhibition will highlight projects and ideas that are engaged with these issues from a variety of perspectives\, ranging from scale and experience to questions of matter. Participants will present research and work that use tactics of mediation to understand\, imagine\, interrupt\, and invent artifacts that exist at the large spatial and slow temporal scale of the Anthropocene.\nAmbiguous Territory will present design ideas and proposals from architects\, artists\, and landscape architects whose work challenges their disciplinary boundaries and long-held anthropocentric orientation and redefines the relationship between built and natural environments in an era of ecological anxiety.\nChairs:       \nKathy Velikov\, Associate Professor at the University of Michigan and principal of RVTR\nCathryn Dwyre\, Visiting Associate Professor at Pratt institute School of Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nChris Perry\, Associate Professor at Rensselaer Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nDavid Salomon\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Ithaca College.\nKeynotes:\nLiam Young\, urbanist\, designer and futurist\; founder of the futures think tank Tomorrows Thoughts Today (tomorrowsthoughtstoday.com)\; the ‘Unknown Fields Division’ (unknownfieldsdivision.com) at the Architectural Association in London\, and the ‘Fiction and Entertainment’ program at SciArc\nDavid Gissen\, author\, historian\, and Professor of Architecture and Visual and Critical Studies at the California College of the Arts and co-director of the Experimental History Project (http://davidgissen.org/)\nFor a full list of speakers and bios\, please visit the Ambiguous Territory symposium web page. \nAmbiguous Territory Symposium Schedule\nAll events in Taubman College Commons unless otherwise noted\nThursday October 5th\n5:00pm\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition Reception\n(Taubman College Gallery)\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: Liam Young\n(Art + Architecture Auditorium)\n \nFriday October 6th (all events occuring in The Commons)\n9:00am\nCoffee\n9:30am\nWelcome: Dean Jonathan Massey\nIntroductory Remarks: Associate Dean of Research and Creative Practice Geoffrey Thün\nSymposium Introduction: Kathy Velikov\n10:00am\nAtmospheric Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Kathy Velikov\nSpeaker 1: Christopher Hight\nSpeaker 2: Lydia Kallipoliti\nSpeaker 3: Sean Lally\nRespondent: Meredith Miller\nRoundtable Discussion\n12:00pm\nLunch Break (lunch not provided)\n1:00pm\nBiologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: David Salomon\nSpeaker 1: Jennifer Peeples\nSpeaker 2: Linsdey french\nSpeaker 3: Ricardo de Ostos\nRespondent: Ellie Abrons\nRoundtable Discussion\n3:00pm\nCoffee Break\n3:30pm\nGeologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Cathryn Dwyre and Chris Perry\nSpeaker 1: Alessandra Ponte\nSpeaker 2: Bradley Cantrell\nSpeaker 3: Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy\nRespondent: Mark Lindquist\nRoundtable Discussion\n5:30pm\nBreak\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: David Gissen\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition \nSeptember 27th – October 18th 2017\nUniversity of Michigan Taubman College Gallery\nDecember 2018 – January 2019\nPratt Manhattan Gallery\, New York

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Promoting Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion at Two Major Research Universities
DESCRIPTION:Kenneth I. Maton\, Professor of Psychology and Affiliate Professor of Public Policy at University of Maryland\, Baltimore County is nationally known for his program evaluation expertise\, particularly related to science and mathematics intervention programs at the college level that focus on underrepresented student communities. He is the lead evaluator for the widely renown Meyerhoff Scholars Program. The primary emphasis of the Meyerhoff program is to increase the number of underrepresented minority scientists and biomedical researchers. This multifaceted\, strengths-based approach to intervention and research has made great strides in increasing the number of African American students who earn PhDs or MD/PhDs and pursue research careers in biomedical science.\n\nDuring this session\, Dr. Maton will discuss a major diversity\, equity and inclusion partnership between the University of Maryland\, Baltimore County (UMBC)\, Pennsylvania State University (PSU)\, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC).\n\nThis innovative project builds upon lessons from the exemplary UMBC Meyerhoff Scholars Program to develop inclusive high-achieving undergraduate programs at UNC and PSU that promote diversity\, equity\, and institutional transformation. \n\nSponsored by:\nGrowing STEM: Pipelines\, Collaborations and Pedagogies for Diversity & Inclusion at Michigan with support from the College of Engineering\, LSA\, National Center for Institutional Diversity\, Medical School\, Center for Educational Outreach\, and the Office of the Vice Provost for Equity\, Inclusion and Academic Affairs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Kabuki actors were superstars in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japan. They were admired by passionate fans with an insatiable appetite for images of them\, fed by a publishing industry that mass-produced colorful woodblock prints of actors on stage that could be cheaply purchased as souvenirs of or substitutes for a theater experience. Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols\, including off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans’ voyeuristic curiosity about their favorite actors’ lives\, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groupings\, and even death portraits of especially famous actors. This introduction to the visual culture surrounding kabuki theater includes prints by major artists such as Utagawa Toyokuni (1769–1825)\, Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865)\, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861)\, and Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900).\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the William T. and Dora G. Hunter Endowment\, AISIN\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, and the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the Japan Foundation and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Protecting Wisdom: Tibetan Book Covers from the MacLean Collection
DESCRIPTION:Protecting Wisdom: Tibetan Book Covers from the MacLean Collection is the first major exhibition to examine the subject of Tibetan book covers. For Tibetan Buddhists\, books are a divine presence in which the Buddha lives and reveals himself\, and they are venerated and handled with the utmost respect. The exhibition features 33 book covers dating from the eleventh to the eighteenth century that represent the glorious iconographic array and non-figural decoration typical of these sacred items. The majority of covers in the exhibition are Tibetan Buddhist\, but the exhibition also includes a rare Bon-religion cover and two covers from Mongolia\, as well as an important pair of covers produced circa 1411 for the Chinese Ming emperor Yongle. Protecting Wisdom presents a stunning visual display that illuminates a virtually unknown type of art\, one that will charm and intrigue both those familiar and unfamiliar with Tibetan art.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Aesthetic Movement
DESCRIPTION:Pictorialism was the first truly international photography movement\, and its practitioners\, among them Alfred Stieglitz\, Edward Steichen and Gertrude Käsebier\, sought to position photography as a legitimate aesthetic art form. They favored soft-focus images that drew upon the conventions of important artists and movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites\, James McNeill Whistler\, Japonisme\, and Art Nouveau are readily seen in the images on view in this exhibition.\n\nIn 1902 Alfred Stieglitz and other Pictorialist photographers founded the Photo-Secession in New York\, with Camera Work as the flagship periodical that published images by the group. Their poetic compositions drawn from contemporary life\, combined with the use of expensive and labor-intensive printing materials such as platinum and gum bichromate\, established these photographs as complex and nuanced works of high artistic quality. The exhibition features work by the principal Pictorialists\, including Stieglitz\, Steichen\, Käsebier\, Clarence White\, Paul Strand\, and Alvin Langdon Coburn.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces: Reconstructing the History of a Chokwe Mask
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Traces focuses on one artwork from the Museum's African holdings: a Chokwe mask that was collected in 1905 near the Angolan city of Dundo by the German explorer Leo Frobenius. Its presence at UMMA today—almost 7\,500 miles away from the context in which it was originally created\, used\, and valued—is the result of a long and tumultuous journey\, spanning a hundred years\, three continents\, and numerous people whose lives are forever connected to the artifact that passed through their hands.\nTraces tells the stories of some of these individuals as it reconstructs the “biography” of the mask. Drawing on the Museum’s African art collection and complemented with national loans\, the exhibition is informed by research that exposes the mask’s many layers and restores some of its historical complexity. Visitors will be able to look closely\, and in great detail\, at this intriguing artwork and its fascinating story.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the James and Vivian Curtis Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Center for the Education of Women's Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Health\, History\, Demography and Development (H2D2)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act state Medicaid expansions have been found to increase insurance coverage and access to care\, but the question remains whether these expansions relieve the burden of out-of-pocket costs associated with obtaining medical care and in turn improve health outcomes. This paper considers the extent to which these expansions have alleviated this burden and have impacted health outcomes for non-elderly low-income adults using data from the 2011-2016 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement covering the 2010-2015 calendar years. Using a difference-in-differences framework\, the analysis examines effects of the Medicaid expansions for out-of-pocket expenditures on health insurance premiums and medical care as well as on reported health\, comparing expenditures across expansion and non-expansion states before and after the expansions were implemented. The analysis examines whether the expansions had different effects over the short and longer terms by comparing effects in the first and second years of their implementation. The findings show that the expansions were associated with increases in the likelihoods of having zero premium expenditures and non-premium medical out-of-pocket expenditures\, suggesting the expansions were effective in improving financial well-being. The findings further show that the expansions were associated with a decrease in the likelihood of reporting excellent or very good health. Taken together with evidence from other studies that the expansions were associated with an increase in the use of preventative care and diagnosis of medical conditions\, the findings of this analysis suggest the decline in reported health comes about not from a decline in utilization of care\, but rather\, changes in perceptions of health associated with increased utilization.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium Series
DESCRIPTION:TITLE: Neural circuits underlying the invigoration of reward-seeking\n\nAbstract: \nCues in our environment can gain the ability to powerfully influence our decision making and behavior. Importantly\, the degree to which these cues are powerful\, and the nature of the behaviors that they generate\, is modulated by changes in our physiological and affective state. In particular I am interested in defining the neural systems underlying the incentive motivational properties of cues\, that is\, their ability to elicit and invigorate reward seeking actions\, and in determining the degree to which signaling in these circuits represents a common mechanism for the invigoration of reward seeking\, and the influence of changes in state. Most recently\, I have focused my investigation of these properties on the rat ventral pallidum\, where I found robust encoding of cue-elicited reward seeking vigor. By parsing the contributions of specific inputs to the ventral pallidum to this encoding I hope to reveal the neural and psychological building blocks of this incentive motivational signal. Additionally\, by assessing changes in neural encoding of cue-elicited reward seeking across states that influence reward seeking\, such as physiological need\, withdrawal or stress\, I aim to reverse engineer the neural circuits that contribute to exaggerated motivation under these conditions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LRCCS Noon Lecture Series | Violence in East Asian Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:The principle of nonviolence occupies a central place in Buddhist tradition. It is perhaps for this reason that individuals both within and outside the academy regularly contrast it with purportedly more “violent” world religions\, asserting that Buddhism has had no institutional involvement in conflicts akin to the crusades or jihad. Against this highly romanticized vision of the tradition\, Buddhist monastics have turned out to have interacted with lay people in almost every conceivable way — including violence. This talk aims to throw light on East Asian Buddhism’s involvement in warfare and other forms of violence.\n\nJinhua Chen was trained as a historian of religions\, with a focus on East Asian Buddhism. After receiving a doctoral degree in Religious Studies from McMaster University in 1997\, he held a postdoctoral research fellowship at Kyoto University in Japan. In 2001\, he joined the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia. That same year he was also appointed by the federal government of Canada as the Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in East Asian Buddhism (2001-2011). He has been engaged in research projects related to East Asian state-church relationships\, monastic (hagio/)biographical literature\, Buddhist sacred sites\, relic veneration\, Buddhism and technological innovation in medieval China\, Buddhist translations\, and manuscript culture.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Wonderland Gems & Jewels
DESCRIPTION:Betsy Lehndorff’s jewelry is influenced by her life in Hubbard Lake in northeastern Michigan. Using her stone cutting and silversmithing skills\, she takes on six subjects that impact her isolated world: water\, winter\, plants\, critters\, rocks and the heavens. Her work\, often representational and sometimes narrative\, challenges the idea of jewelry as a status symbol. Lehndorff was born and raised in Ann Arbor\, and lived in Colorado until 2012. She is a granddaughter of renowned architect Albert Kahn (Hill Auditorium and the “Old Main” U-M Hospital) and daughter of Dr. Edgar A. Kahn\, who headed the neurosurgery department at the U-M Hospital in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Geometry/Topology
DESCRIPTION:Hilbert's fifth problem asks whether every topological group which is locally Euclidean is in fact a Lie group. This problem was answered in the affirmative in the fifties following deeper investigations into the structure and representation theory of general locally compact topological groups. In this talk I will indicate how Hilbert's fifth is resolved and then we will consider a generalization of the problem which is still open: The Hilbert-Smith conjecture asks whether a locally compact group with a faithful\, continuous action on a connected manifold is in fact a Lie group. \n\nThere is an intriguing\, known reduction of the conjecture: It is sufficient to show that the locally compact group in question cannot be any of the (additive) groups of p-adic integers. In this talk I will explain why this is sufficient to prove the conjecture. Speaker(s): Andrew Odesky (UM)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry
DESCRIPTION: It is a well known fact that a general hypersurface of degree d in projective n-space is rationally connected if d is at most n\, but contains very few curves if d is larger than n. More generally let X be a smooth projective variety and H a hypersurface of X such that K_X+H is anti-ample\, then by the adjunction formula and a classical result of Kollar-Miyaoka-Mori we know that H is rationally connected. In a recent project we use the minimal model program as well as other techniques in birational geometry to study further how the behavior of rational curves on X as well as the positivity of -(K_X + H) and H influence the behavior of rational curves in H. In this talk I will present several results and examples of this kind. In particular we will see criteria for uniruledness and rational connectedness of H. Speaker(s): Yuan Wang (University of Utah)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:\"How the Soviet Jew Was Made\"
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores how scenes of encounter between Russian Jews and Jews from the United States and elsewhere in the West have been depicted in literary fiction and journalism from the Cold War to the present day. Examining texts written during the Soviet Jewry Movement by Jewish writers visiting the USSR from abroad alongside texts by contemporary émigré Jewish writers from the Soviet Union in America\, this lecture posits the \"Soviet Jew\" as a product of inter-cultural imagination that has been deployed as a concept in political-cultural activism and literary satire alike. \n\nSasha Senderovich is an Assistant Professor of Russian Studies and Jewish Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder. His published work includes articles on Russian Jewish writers David Bergelson and Isaac Babel\, a critical introduction and notes to the English-language translation of Moyshe Kulbak's Soviet Yiddish novel The Zelmenyaners: A Family Saga (Yale University Press\, 2013)\, as well as on contemporary fiction by Russian Jewish émigré authors in the United States. In collaboration with Harriet Murav\, he translated David Bergelson's Soviet Yiddish novel Judgment\, forthcoming with the translators' critical introduction and notes from Northwestern University Press (2017). He has also written on Russian Jewish literature and culture for The New Republic\, Los Angeles Review of Books\, Tablet Magazine\, The Jewish Daily Forward\, and The New Yorker's Page-turner blog. \n\nImage courtesy of Julia Alekseyeva\, Soviet Daughter: A Graphic Revolution\n\nIf you have a disability that requires a reasonable accommodation\, contact the Judaic Studies office at 734-763-9047 at least two weeks prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | High-Harmonic Generation in Bulk and 2D Solids
DESCRIPTION:Harmonic generation is a general phenomena of strongly-driven systems. The conversion of infrared laser light to the extreme ultraviolet in atomic-gases is a well known example that forms the basis of strong-field atomic physics and attosecond pulse generation. The process can largely be understood in terms of a three-step model that includes periodic field-ionization\, acceleration and coherent recombination of electrons from isolated atoms. We have recently discovered that non-perturbative high harmonic generation (HHG) also occurs in crystalline solids[1]. The high-density of solids could lead to compact and efficient sources of coherent short wavelength radiation. The generation mechanism in solids a topic of intense debate and is fundamentally different from atomic-gases in that the it necessarily involves interactions with multiple atoms. In this talk\, I will present our recent efforts to understand solid-state HHG\, how it differs from gas phase harmonics and its dependence on electronic structure[2-4]. \n\n[1] S. Ghimire\, A. D. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:JOHN DERBY EVANS LECTURE presents Fragmented Media Environment: Individual Choices\, their Effects and Proposed Solutions
DESCRIPTION:Many scholars and public observers worry that fragmented media outlets\, nearly unlimited content\, and the ever prevalent new technologies allow citizens to disproportionally seek likeminded sources and information\, which – in turn – reinforce their prior political attitudes. In this presentation\, I first draw from my past research to provide an overview of how people navigate choice in this media environment and on the effects of these choices on attitude polarization\, an outcome increasingly relevant in the current sociopolitical climate. I then turn to the primary question: Whether and how selectivity and polarization might be attenuated. Drawing on data from two experimental studies\, I show that priming common intergroup identity encourages the selection of both pro- and counter-attitudinal political content\, increases individual openness to messages coming from out-groups\, as well as lowers affective polarization (e.g.\, hostility and social distance toward out-groups\, among other outcomes). In the last part of the presentation\, I outline a future project that aims to explain when\, why\, for whom\, and for what kinds of political issues exposure to like-minded or dissimilar views in old and new media amplifies polarization.\n\nMagdalena Wojcieszak (Ph.D. Annenberg School for Communication\, University of Pennsylvania)\, is an Associate Professor of Political Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research\, University of Amsterdam. Prior to joining University of Amsterdam she was an Assistant Professor at IE University\, Spain.\n\nHer research focuses on political communication\, public opinion\, and the effects of mass and new media on citizens’ attitudes\, behaviors\, and perceptions. She has (co-)authored 41 articles in peer-reviewed journal (e.g.\, Journal of Communication\, Public Opinion Quarterly\, Political Communication\, Communication Research\, Political Psychology\, among others)\, 4 book chapters\, a book\, and co-edited two other books\, and also served as a Guest Editor of a Special Issue of International Journal of Communication.\n\nMagdalena is the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Public Opinion Research\, and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Communication and EastBound. She has received several awards for her research (including the 2016 Young Scholar Award from the International Association of Communication) and grants from the Spanish Ministry of Science\, the Spanish Sociological Research Center\, and Junta de Castilla y León\, Spain. She serves as a frequent reviewer for many journals and various international science foundations.\n\nTo step beyond the academic ivory tower\, Magdalena applies her research to real world conflicts\, assessing public opinion about the conflict in Darfur and examining how Iranian citizens and journalists engage with online\, mobile and offline communication tools.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Colloquium Series
DESCRIPTION:There is a deep and famous result of Deuring and Serre (refined by Ribet) in arithmetic geometry saying that one has a canonical bijection between isomorphism classes of supersingular elliptic curves over the algebraic closure of F_p and those of oriented maximal Eichler orders of discriminant p\, where p is a prime number. The theorem immediately gives a formula for the number of such elliptic curves. However\, it has much more significant applications in Galois representations and modular forms\, if one interprets it in terms of the geometry of modular curves. This result was later generalized to some other Hilbert modular varieties\, for example\, by Nicole in genus 2 and by Yu in genus 4. In this talk\, we will generalize this result to arbitrary Hilbert modular varieties\, by providing a global description of the supersingular locus. We will also discuss its applications in number theory. This is a joint work with Yichao Tian at Bonn. Speaker(s): Yifeng Liu (Northwestern University)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry
DESCRIPTION:Toric varieties are defined abstractly as algebraic varieties with the action of an open dense torus\; in practice\, they arise from the very concrete combinatorial data of a collection of cones. The utility of toric varieties lies in the fact that many familiar varieties are toric\, and many basic operations and definitions can be recast in terms of the associated combinatorial data. Thus toric varieties give a useful class of examples to elucidate more abstract\, complex theories. \n\nIn this talk\, we'll examine basic definitions and examples of toric varieties\, and cover the general correspondences between the geometric\, algebraic\, and combinatorial aspects of the theory. We'll then focus on toric resolution of singularities as an example of how the special setting of toric varieties can give useful examples for general theory. In particular\, we'll describe the types of singularities that can occur on an affine toric variety\, and show how to resolve them via the associated combinatorial data. We'll focus on surface singularities\, but time permitting may sketch the general approach in higher dimensions. Speaker(s): Devlin Mallory (UM)
