Out of this came an artistic exploration and refinement of birds using ceramic vessels as the starting point. Whimsical additions such as tails and beaks give each bird an individual personality. Each bird is perched on an individually carved limestone base to enhance the unique qualities that each bird displays. This paper considers the extent to which these expansions have alleviated this burden and have impacted health outcomes for non-elderly low-income adults using data from the 2011-2016 Current Population Survey Annual Social and Economic Supplement covering the 2010-2015 calendar years. Using a difference-in-differences framework, the analysis examines effects of the Medicaid expansions for out-of-pocket expenditures on health insurance premiums and medical care as well as on reported health, comparing expenditures across expansion and non-expansion states before and after the expansions were implemented. The analysis examines whether the expansions had different effects over the short and longer terms by comparing effects in the first and second years of their implementation. The findings show that the expansions were associated with increases in the likelihoods of having zero premium expenditures and non-premium medical out-of-pocket expenditures, suggesting the expansions were effective in improving financial well-being. The findings further show that the expansions were associated with a decrease in the likelihood of reporting excellent or very good health. In particular I am interested in defining the neural systems underlying the incentive motivational properties of cues, that is, their ability to elicit and invigorate reward seeking actions, and in determining the degree to which signaling in these circuits represents a common mechanism for the invigoration of reward seeking, and the influence of changes in state. Most recently, I have focused my investigation of these properties on the rat ventral pallidum, where I found robust encoding of cue-elicited reward seeking vigor. By parsing the contributions of specific inputs to the ventral pallidum to this encoding I hope to reveal the neural and psychological building blocks of this incentive motivational signal. In this talk I will indicate how Hilbert's fifth is resolved and then we will consider a generalization of the problem which is still open: The Hilbert-Smith conjecture asks whether a locally compact group with a faithful, continuous action on a connected manifold is in fact a Lie group. \r\n\r\nThere is an intriguing, known reduction of the conjecture: It is sufficient to show that the locally compact group in question cannot be any of the (additive) groups of p-adic integers. The conversion of infrared laser light to the extreme ultraviolet in atomic-gases is a well known example that forms the basis of strong-field atomic physics and attosecond pulse generation. The process can largely be understood in terms of a three-step model that includes periodic field-ionization, acceleration and coherent recombination of electrons from isolated atoms. We have recently discovered that non-perturbative high harmonic generation (HHG) also occurs in crystalline solids[1]. The high-density of solids could lead to compact and efficient sources of coherent short wavelength radiation. In this presentation, I first draw from my past research to provide an overview of how people navigate choice in this media environment and on the effects of these choices on attitude polarization, an outcome increasingly relevant in the current sociopolitical climate. I then turn to the primary question: Whether and how selectivity and polarization might be attenuated. Drawing on data from two experimental studies, I show that priming common intergroup identity encourages the selection of both pro- and counter-attitudinal political content, increases individual openness to messages coming from out-groups, as well as lowers affective polarization (e.g., hostility and social distance toward out-groups, among other outcomes). In the last part of the presentation, I outline a future project that aims to explain when, why, for whom, and for what kinds of political issues exposure to like-minded or dissimilar views in old and new media amplifies polarization.\r\n\r\nMagdalena Wojcieszak (Ph.D. Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania), is an Associate Professor of Political Communication at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research, University of Amsterdam. Prior to joining University of Amsterdam she was an Assistant Professor at IE University, Spain.\r\n\r\nHer research focuses on political communication, public opinion, and the effects of mass and new media on citizens\u2019 attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions. She has (co-)authored 41 articles in peer-reviewed journal (e.g., Journal of Communication, Public Opinion Quarterly, Political Communication, Communication Research, Political Psychology, among others), 4 book chapters, a book, and co-edited two other books, and also served as a Guest Editor of a Special Issue of International Journal of Communication.\r\n\r\nMagdalena is the Associate Editor of the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Communication and EastBound. The theorem immediately gives a formula for the number of such elliptic curves. However, it has much more significant applications in Galois representations and modular forms, if one interprets it in terms of the geometry of modular curves. This result was later generalized to some other Hilbert modular varieties, for example, by Nicole in genus 2 and by Yu in genus 4. In this talk, we will generalize this result to arbitrary Hilbert modular varieties, by providing a global description of the supersingular locus.
