SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Avian Vessels: Mixed Media Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Cincinnati based sculptor Karen Heyl has been professionally sculpting stone since 1984. She is best known for bas-relief limestone sculptures\, but in 2011 she developed an interest in sculpting clay using a similar relief carving technique. Out of this came an artistic exploration and refinement of birds using ceramic vessels as the starting point. Whimsical additions such as tails and beaks give each bird an individual personality. Each bird is perched on an individually carved limestone base to enhance the unique qualities that each bird displays. Heyl’s affinity for nature extends from her art to her love of gardening and the occasional golf game.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Divided Images: Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Jill Ault is an Ann Arbor studio artist working in fiber\, primarily quilts\, with a BFA degree in painting from Eastern Michigan University. Her quilts are constructed of multiple copies of an image: a photograph\, a graphic design or a painting. She digitally prints variations of the image on fabric and divides the copies into many small squares (no two alike). When she carefully reassembles and sews together the squares\, parts of the image seem to move across and down the surface of the quilt. Ault exhibits nationally at fiber and quilt shows\, such as Quilt National in Athens\, Ohio and Fiberart International in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Symposium: Ambiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\nAmbiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural is a symposium and concurrent exhibition that situates contemporary discourses and practices of architecture and landscape within the context of the Postnatural\; the era of climate change\, the Anthropocene\, and altered ecologies. The symposium asks: In a time when humans have been fundamentally displaced from their presumed place of privilege\, philosophically as well as experientially\, should the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture consider displacing themselves as well\, in order to establish new affiliations and avail new ways to approach contemporary questions of design in relation to the environment?\nBy bringing designers and scholars from these fields together the symposium and exhibition will highlight projects and ideas that are engaged with these issues from a variety of perspectives\, ranging from scale and experience to questions of matter. Participants will present research and work that use tactics of mediation to understand\, imagine\, interrupt\, and invent artifacts that exist at the large spatial and slow temporal scale of the Anthropocene.\nAmbiguous Territory will present design ideas and proposals from architects\, artists\, and landscape architects whose work challenges their disciplinary boundaries and long-held anthropocentric orientation and redefines the relationship between built and natural environments in an era of ecological anxiety.\nChairs:       \nKathy Velikov\, Associate Professor at the University of Michigan and principal of RVTR\nCathryn Dwyre\, Visiting Associate Professor at Pratt institute School of Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nChris Perry\, Associate Professor at Rensselaer Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nDavid Salomon\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Ithaca College.\nKeynotes:\nLiam Young\, urbanist\, designer and futurist\; founder of the futures think tank Tomorrows Thoughts Today (tomorrowsthoughtstoday.com)\; the ‘Unknown Fields Division’ (unknownfieldsdivision.com) at the Architectural Association in London\, and the ‘Fiction and Entertainment’ program at SciArc\nDavid Gissen\, author\, historian\, and Professor of Architecture and Visual and Critical Studies at the California College of the Arts and co-director of the Experimental History Project (http://davidgissen.org/)\nFor a full list of speakers and bios\, please visit the Ambiguous Territory symposium web page. \nAmbiguous Territory Symposium Schedule\nAll events in Taubman College Commons unless otherwise noted\nThursday October 5th\n5:00pm\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition Reception\n(Taubman College Gallery)\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: Liam Young\n(Art + Architecture Auditorium)\n \nFriday October 6th (all events occuring in The Commons)\n9:00am\nCoffee\n9:30am\nWelcome: Dean Jonathan Massey\nIntroductory Remarks: Associate Dean of Research and Creative Practice Geoffrey Thün\nSymposium Introduction: Kathy Velikov\n10:00am\nAtmospheric Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Kathy Velikov\nSpeaker 1: Christopher Hight\nSpeaker 2: Lydia Kallipoliti\nSpeaker 3: Sean Lally\nRespondent: Meredith Miller\nRoundtable Discussion\n12:00pm\nLunch Break (lunch not provided)\n1:00pm\nBiologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: David Salomon\nSpeaker 1: Jennifer Peeples\nSpeaker 2: Linsdey french\nSpeaker 3: Ricardo de Ostos\nRespondent: Ellie Abrons\nRoundtable Discussion\n3:00pm\nCoffee Break\n3:30pm\nGeologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Cathryn Dwyre and Chris Perry\nSpeaker 1: Alessandra Ponte\nSpeaker 2: Bradley Cantrell\nSpeaker 3: Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy\nRespondent: Mark Lindquist\nRoundtable Discussion\n5:30pm\nBreak\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: David Gissen\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition \nSeptember 27th – October 18th 2017\nUniversity of Michigan Taubman College Gallery\nDecember 2018 – January 2019\nPratt Manhattan Gallery\, New York

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Kabuki actors were superstars in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japan. They were admired by passionate fans with an insatiable appetite for images of them\, fed by a publishing industry that mass-produced colorful woodblock prints of actors on stage that could be cheaply purchased as souvenirs of or substitutes for a theater experience. Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols\, including off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans’ voyeuristic curiosity about their favorite actors’ lives\, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groupings\, and even death portraits of especially famous actors. This introduction to the visual culture surrounding kabuki theater includes prints by major artists such as Utagawa Toyokuni (1769–1825)\, Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865)\, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861)\, and Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900).\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the William T. and Dora G. Hunter Endowment\, AISIN\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, and the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the Japan Foundation and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Protecting Wisdom: Tibetan Book Covers from the MacLean Collection
DESCRIPTION:Protecting Wisdom: Tibetan Book Covers from the MacLean Collection is the first major exhibition to examine the subject of Tibetan book covers. For Tibetan Buddhists\, books are a divine presence in which the Buddha lives and reveals himself\, and they are venerated and handled with the utmost respect. The exhibition features 33 book covers dating from the eleventh to the eighteenth century that represent the glorious iconographic array and non-figural decoration typical of these sacred items. The majority of covers in the exhibition are Tibetan Buddhist\, but the exhibition also includes a rare Bon-religion cover and two covers from Mongolia\, as well as an important pair of covers produced circa 1411 for the Chinese Ming emperor Yongle. Protecting Wisdom presents a stunning visual display that illuminates a virtually unknown type of art\, one that will charm and intrigue both those familiar and unfamiliar with Tibetan art.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Aesthetic Movement
DESCRIPTION:Pictorialism was the first truly international photography movement\, and its practitioners\, among them Alfred Stieglitz\, Edward Steichen and Gertrude Käsebier\, sought to position photography as a legitimate aesthetic art form. They favored soft-focus images that drew upon the conventions of important artists and movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites\, James McNeill Whistler\, Japonisme\, and Art Nouveau are readily seen in the images on view in this exhibition.\n\nIn 1902 Alfred Stieglitz and other Pictorialist photographers founded the Photo-Secession in New York\, with Camera Work as the flagship periodical that published images by the group. Their poetic compositions drawn from contemporary life\, combined with the use of expensive and labor-intensive printing materials such as platinum and gum bichromate\, established these photographs as complex and nuanced works of high artistic quality. The exhibition features work by the principal Pictorialists\, including Stieglitz\, Steichen\, Käsebier\, Clarence White\, Paul Strand\, and Alvin Langdon Coburn.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces: Reconstructing the History of a Chokwe Mask
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Traces focuses on one artwork from the Museum's African holdings: a Chokwe mask that was collected in 1905 near the Angolan city of Dundo by the German explorer Leo Frobenius. Its presence at UMMA today—almost 7\,500 miles away from the context in which it was originally created\, used\, and valued—is the result of a long and tumultuous journey\, spanning a hundred years\, three continents\, and numerous people whose lives are forever connected to the artifact that passed through their hands.\nTraces tells the stories of some of these individuals as it reconstructs the “biography” of the mask. Drawing on the Museum’s African art collection and complemented with national loans\, the exhibition is informed by research that exposes the mask’s many layers and restores some of its historical complexity. Visitors will be able to look closely\, and in great detail\, at this intriguing artwork and its fascinating story.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the James and Vivian Curtis Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Center for the Education of Women's Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Bonderman Info Session (Michigan Union)
DESCRIPTION:The Bonderman Fellowship offers graduating LSA seniors $20\,000 to travel the world. They must travel to 6 countries in 2 regions over the course of 8 months and are expected to immerse themselves in independent and enriching explorations. Bonderman Fellows engage with cultures\, people\, and areas of the world with which they are not familiar\, providing them the opportunity to develop entirely new perspectives.\n\nUM is one of only two schools—along with the University of Washington—to offer the Bonderman award. David Bonderman traveled internationally as a Sheldon Fellow after graduating from Harvard Law School in the 1960s\, and that experience shaped the rest of his life. He created the Bonderman Travel Fellowship in 1995 to provide students with a similar opportunity. Fellows make their own travel itineraries and\, because this is meant to be an individual experience\, cannot engage in formal study at a foreign university\, conduct formal research\, or travel with a guest or organized group.\n\nPizza and other refreshments will be served at all Bonderman info sessions.\n\nAfter this 30-minute info session in the Union\, advisors will be available for another 30 minutes to answer questions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Fridays at Noon Lecture Series: The Karma of Care: Thinking “Abhidhammically” About Intra- and Inter-Personal Support in Northern Thailand
DESCRIPTION:In many Thai contexts\, reminders to keep a “cool heart” are prevalent. Even in the midst of long-term and end-of-life care\, ideal support is not so much about rich emotional sharing as the abandoning of attachment and the attainment of equanimity in the face of tumult. In this talk\, I interrogate the emotional and affective valence of ordinary caregiving situations in Northern Thailand. To do so\, I look to the Tipitaka – the compendium of sermons\, commentaries\, and technical manuals of the Pali canon – as a guide and theoretical frame. With ethnographic material otherwise vexing to a host of analytic perspectives\, the theory of mind the Theravada philosophical lineage presents proves crucial for understanding contemporary subjectivity at Thai bedsides and beyond.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EIHS Workshop: \"Roots\, Rootedness\, and Routine\"
DESCRIPTION:How does place make you who you are? This is an implicit concern of Paul Cobb’s book\, Race for Paradise\, a history of the Crusades from the Muslim perspective. This panel examines the ways in which people come to feel anchored and attached to a location\, whether physically\, legally\, or emotionally. It examines metaphorical and literal rootedness and the ways in which routine and practice become identity. Looking specifically at Carolingian Biblical commentaries\, Spanish-colonial urban lawsuits\, and Islamic precolonial oral histories\, the panelists will discuss the relationships between boundaries\, identity\, work\, and belonging in their research. \n\nPanelists include:\n\nNoah Blan (PhD Candidate\, History\, University of Michigan)\nLamin Manneh (PhD Student\, History\, University of Michigan)\nAna María Silva (PhD Candidate\, History\, University of Michigan)\nPaul M. Cobb (commentator\; Professor and Department Chair\, Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations\, University of Pennsylvania)\nKatherine French (chair\; J. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:PhonDi Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Ian Bekker will speak on \"The colour of liquid: /l/ in South African English.\"\n\nAbstract\nThe impressionistic literature on South African English (SAfE) displays disagreement with respect to the phonetic quality of /l/ in this dialect\, or\, more particularly\, in relation to the quality of the allophones of this phoneme in onset and coda position. Lass (1990\; 1995\; 2004)\, in particular\, makes the claim that SAfE displays a typically ‘Southern’ clear-dark /l/ allophony\, with neutral to palatalized (i.e. generally clear) /l/ in onset position\, but dark /l/ (anything from velarised to pharyngealized) in coda position. This position has become the standard one\, echoed\, for example\, in Bowerman (2004).\n\nThis is\, however\, in contrast to almost all previous pronouncements on the matter. Thus Lanham (1967: 65\; 98) concludes that /l/ in SAfE is clear in all positions\, with Wells (1982: 617) agreeing i.e. that “South African English is not really dark in any environment” but always clear or neutral. Even the recent Trudgill (2004: 79) adopts the same position.\n\nThe research on which this paper is based attempts to clarify the above-mentioned discrepancy i.e. to determine what the status of SAfE /l/ is on the basis of a large sample of recordings as well as modern acoustic phonetic techniques\; but also to discover what the source of the discrepancy might be (barring simple error). In this regard\, it investigates the possibility that SAfE might have undergone sound change with respect to /l/. It does this by drawing on a sample of 44 GenSAfE speakers from Cape Town\, ranging from 18 to 60 years of age\, almost evenly split for gender. Each participant was recorded taking part in a sociolinguistic interview\, subsequently prepared for analysis using the Forced Alignment and Vowel Extraction suite (Rosenfelder\, Fruehwald\, Evanini & Yuan 2011).

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Wonderland Gems & Jewels
DESCRIPTION:Betsy Lehndorff’s jewelry is influenced by her life in Hubbard Lake in northeastern Michigan. Using her stone cutting and silversmithing skills\, she takes on six subjects that impact her isolated world: water\, winter\, plants\, critters\, rocks and the heavens. Her work\, often representational and sometimes narrative\, challenges the idea of jewelry as a status symbol. Lehndorff was born and raised in Ann Arbor\, and lived in Colorado until 2012. She is a granddaughter of renowned architect Albert Kahn (Hill Auditorium and the “Old Main” U-M Hospital) and daughter of Dr. Edgar A. Kahn\, who headed the neurosurgery department at the U-M Hospital in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Energy & Environmental Economics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nRecently\, a series of natural gas price shocks in New England\, which affected electricity generation costs of firms heterogeneously\, led to a spike in electricity prices. I study the pass-through implications of the change in the competition between firms resulting from this gas price shock\, focusing on the heterogeneous impacts of the shock. I use New England electricity auction bidding data and utilize the multi-unit uniform auction model to estimate gas prices implied by firms’ bids\, which allows me to identify the impacts of the shock on the costs of each firm. To understand how differences in impacts affected the competition\, I obtain firm-specific markups and relate them to costs. I find that firms less affected by the shock increase markups more than \"hard-hit\" firms\, and this difference in adjustment increases in the size of the gas price shock. To explore how such heterogeneous incentives for markup adjustment are reflected in price\, I then simulate the pass-through rates at the auction level. Although I find that firms completely passed on the cost shocks to prices on average\, considerable variation exists in the rates depending on which type of firm sets the price in the auction. Therefore\, any estimation of the pass-through rate that fails to incorporate heterogeneity of the underlying rates could yield estimates that are significantly biased downward. I illustrate this by comparing the simulated rates to the estimated ones from the reduced form.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Applied Interdisciplinary Mathematics
DESCRIPTION:I will discuss the task of proving bounds on average quantities in dissipative dynamical systems\, including time averages in finite-dimensional systems and spatiotemporal averages in PDE systems. In the finite-dimensional case\, I will describe computer-assisted methods where bounds are proven by constructing nonnegative polynomials with certain properties\, similarly to the way nonlinear stability can be proven by constructing Lyapunov functions. Nonnegativity of polynomials is enforced by requiring them to be representable as sums of squares\, a condition that can be checked using the convex optimization technique of semidefinite programming. Rigorous bounds are obtained by supplementing numerical computations with either interval arithmetic or symbolic computation. These methods are illustrated using the Lorenz equations\, where they produce novel bounds on various average quantities. In the PDE case\, I will describe bounds for fluid dynamical models proven using pencil-and-paper analysis. Differences from the finite-dimensional case will be discussed\, as well as the possibility of improving results for PDEs using computer-assisted methods like those described for the finite-dimensional case. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Seminar | Particle-Vortex Duality and Topological Quantum Matter
DESCRIPTION:The past summer has seen an intense flurry of activity around the topic low-energy dualities that has uncovered a veritable web of 3-dimensional dualities relating a number of non-supersymmetric bosonic and fermionic theories. Moreover\, these dualities find a very satisfying and direct “real-world” application to the physics of topological quantum matter. In this talk\, I will give a more-or-less pedagogical introduction to the subject of low energy dualities and review some of the more recent developments in the field.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special CM-AMO Seminar | Electronic and Surface Structure of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides and Van der Waals Interfaces
DESCRIPTION:**Please note this seminar time is 3:00 pm and it is taking place in 340 West Hall.**\nTransition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted much interest for their potential applications in opto-electronic\, spintronics and valleytronics devices. Direct determination of the electronic- and surface structure of TMDCs is crucial to the full understanding of their distinctive properties. In particular\, like other atomically thin materials\, the interactions with substrate impact the surface structure and morphology of TMDCs\, and as a result\, their structural and physical properties can be affected. Here\, in this talk\, I will discuss the electronic structure and surface structure of MoS2 investigated using synchrotron-based spectroscopic photoemission and low energy electron microscopy. Thickness-dependent electronic structure of MoS2 measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy directly demonstrates the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition when MoS2 thickness is decreased from multilayer to monolayer. Also\, the thickness-dependent surface roughness is characterized using selected-area low energy electron diffraction (μ-LEED) and the surface structural relaxation is investigated using LEED I-V measurements combined with dynamical LEED calculations. Finally\, bandgap engineering is demonstrated via tuning of the interlayer interactions in van der Waals interfaces by twisting the relative orientation in bilayer-MoS2 and graphene-MoS2-heterostructure systems.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | The Making of the \"Comilla Model\": Experiments in Rural Development in East Pakistan\, 1959-1971
DESCRIPTION:This talk will present preliminary research and thoughts from Professor Ali's next project: an examination of the social and political history of a much-celebrated development program conducted in Comilla district\, East Pakistan during the 1960s. In 1959\, the Pakistani government acceded to the request of the director of the Pakistan Academy of Rural Development to designate the rural areas around Comilla town a “laboratory\,” where “experiments” with various ideas of development and modernization would be conducted. In particular the talk will examine how this rural modernization program conceived Islam both as a barrier and a resource to the aspirations of development. Also discussed will be the methodological challenges of working with the development archive\, especially\, of reading the development archive against the grain to recover subaltern voices.\n\nTariq Ali is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He teaches courses on South Asian history and on the history of global capital. His first book project\, under contract with Princeton University Press and currently awaiting readers reports\, is titled: A Local History of Global Capital: Jute and Economic Life in the Bengal Delta\, 1850s to the 1950s. The book argues that the cultivation and trade of jute connected the Bengal peasantry to the flows and vicissitudes of global flows of capital and commodities and examines the ways in which these market entanglements transformed peasant households’ material lives\, religious and social thought\, and political action.

SUMMARY:Other:Steering Asymmetric Catalysis with Metal-Centered Chirality
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will give an overview of recent contributions from the laboratory of the author to design novel asymmetric catalysts based on exploiting octahedral metal-centered stereochemistry. 1.) Metal-templated asymmetric \"organocatalysts\": The central transition metal solely serves as a structural anchor\, while catalysis is mediated through the organic ligand sphere (e.g. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2016\, 138\, 8774). 2.) Chiral Lewis acid catalysis with chiral-at-metal complexes: The metal fulfills a dual function by coordinatively activating a substrate and at the same time serving as the exclusive source of chirality (e.g. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2014\, 136\, 2990). 3.) Asymmetric photoredox catalysis with chiral-at-metal complexes: Iridium (e.g. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2015\, 137\, 9551) and rhodium (e.g. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2016\, 138\, 6936) catalyzed reactions have been developed in which chiral Lewis acid catalysis cooperates with visible-light-activated redox chemistry.\n\nEric Meggers (University of Marburg\, Germany)

Working outward from the networks of expatriated French musicians abroad\, I use Janequin's chansons to consider how music supported performances of ethnic difference within a Europe that was marked by large migrant populations\, internal colonization\, and diasporas.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:LRCCS Film Series | \"Night Scene\"
DESCRIPTION:Night Scene 《夜景》 (dir. Cui Zi’en\, 75 min.\, 2004)\nCui Zi’en’s \"Night Scene\" takes on one of the biggest taboos in contemporary China: male street prostitution. The gripping story follows a boy who discovers his father’s homosexuality\, and in the process discovers his own. Night Scene is a unique portrait of a twilight world in parks and clubs that veers between documentary and fiction. Cui mixed real gigolos with actors\, while making no strict distinction between homosexuals and prostitutes. It is an ambiguous\, layered film\, just as boundless as the lives of male prostitutes in China.\n\nAbout the Director\n\nCui Zi’en (崔子恩) is from Harbin and is now living in Florida. He is a director\, film scholar\, screenwriter\, novelist and an pioneering queer activist. He graduated from the Chinese Academy of Social Science and now is an Associate Professor at the Beijing Film Academy. The author of books on criticism and theory\, Cui Zi’en has also published nine novels in China and Hong Kong\, including the first gay novel in modern Chinese literature. He founded the Beijing Queer Film Festival\, the first LGBT film festival in 2001. He directed his first film\, Men and Women in 1999 and has since written and/or directed over 20 more. Forging an queer video activism\, Cui’s work circulates freely between fiction and documentary\, the conventional and the avant-garde. His best known films are Enter the Clowns (2002)\, The Old Testament (2002)\, Night Scene (2003)\, and Queer China\, “Comrade” China (2008).\n\nSee the full schedule of upcoming films: https://events.umich.edu/group/LRCCS?filter=tags%3AFilm+Series\,

SUMMARY:Performance:Screening/Q&A: Composed
DESCRIPTION:Through the lens of professional classical musicians\, Composed explores the many ways we experience and can address performance anxiety. Faced with the judgment of peers\, audience\, conductors\, and worst of all themselves\, these musicians spend years trying to understand and overcome the physical and mental manifestations of their anxiety. Through their stories\, we learn valuable lessons learned over a lifetime of professional performance\; and we find that we are not alone in our quest to overcome the fear of failure and embarrassment. For anyone wanting to feel strength over fear and compassion over judgment\, or simply seeking a closer look at anxiety and what makes us tick\, Composed opens the door to a world of high stakes\, high pressure\, and peak performing.\n\nFollowing the screening a Q&A will be held with the film’s director John Beder\, Julie Nagel (psychoanalyst\, psychologist\, pianist\, and author of \"Melodies of the Mind\")\, Louis Nagel (pianist and Emeritus Professor of Piano and Piano Literature)\, and Emily Hyssong (CAPS Counsellor).

SUMMARY:Performance:Enter the Haggis
DESCRIPTION:A haggis is a tasty Scottish dish consisting of sheep heart\, liver\, and lungs\, mixed with oatmeal\, onion\, suet\, and spices\, and then boiled inside the sheep's stomach. The Canadian-Scots band Enter the Haggis (bagpiper Craig Downie is from Scotland) has just about as much variety in their style\, a high-speed collision of Celtic music\, rock\, bluegrass\, funk\, and world music. An Enter the Haggis live show is a musical feast—dynamic and emotionally uplifting. Alternating between upbeat rock numbers with sing-along choruses and slower\, more introspective alt pop songs\, the band plays progressive and lyrically driven music that’s strongly rooted in Celtic tradition—from the storytelling to the bagpipes. Enter the Haggis returns to The Ark with a 20th-anniversary album that showcases the fabulous variety of their music.
