SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:U-M Museum Studies Program Presents: \"Inclusion Requires Fracturing\"
DESCRIPTION:As museums strive to serve broad\, ever-diversifying publics\, it is no longer possible to deny the ways museums mirror and reinforce racial\, cultural\, and class inequities of the broader society. Skillful racial and cultural representation in interpretation and programming is not only an intellectual exercise\; it is an ethical responsibility that requires fracturing the known through consistent individual and institutional self-reflection and action. This talk focuses on the challenging and often painful internal work toward developing diversity and strategies and actions supporting systemic change in museum representation\, interpretation\, and ideation.\nSwarupa Anila is director of interpretive engagement at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Key issues she pursues in interpretive planning practice include examining whose voices and perspectives are missing in museum interpretation\, how to integrate visitor voices to flatten museum and art historical knowledge hierarchies\, and how to design museum interpretation that supports dynamic\, meaningful visitor engagements with art.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Avian Vessels: Mixed Media Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Cincinnati based sculptor Karen Heyl has been professionally sculpting stone since 1984. She is best known for bas-relief limestone sculptures\, but in 2011 she developed an interest in sculpting clay using a similar relief carving technique. Out of this came an artistic exploration and refinement of birds using ceramic vessels as the starting point. Whimsical additions such as tails and beaks give each bird an individual personality. Each bird is perched on an individually carved limestone base to enhance the unique qualities that each bird displays. Heyl’s affinity for nature extends from her art to her love of gardening and the occasional golf game.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Divided Images: Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Jill Ault is an Ann Arbor studio artist working in fiber\, primarily quilts\, with a BFA degree in painting from Eastern Michigan University. Her quilts are constructed of multiple copies of an image: a photograph\, a graphic design or a painting. She digitally prints variations of the image on fabric and divides the copies into many small squares (no two alike). When she carefully reassembles and sews together the squares\, parts of the image seem to move across and down the surface of the quilt. Ault exhibits nationally at fiber and quilt shows\, such as Quilt National in Athens\, Ohio and Fiberart International in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Works by Belle Kogan: First Female Industrial Designer
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition presents industrially-produced art pottery pieces designed by Belle Kogan (1902–2000)\, for Red Wing Potteries in Red Wing\, Minnesota. Kogan is considered the first prominent female industrial designer in the United States\, a founder of the profession\, and one of the 20th century's most significant designers. Her design aesthetic was heavily influenced by the geometric and streamlined shapes of Art Deco. Belle Kogan Associates\, her New York–based studio\, was the first American female-led design firm. Her contracts with Red Wing Potteries produced over 400 different art pottery shapes from the late 1930s to the early 1960s\, as well as several dinnerware and kitchenware lines. Belle Kogan and her firm designed products not only in ceramics but also clocks and small appliances\, glassware\, and pieces in silver\, plastics\, wrought iron and wood.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Florence Flood\, November 1966
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit focuses on the destruction of Florence during the flood on November 4\, 1966. Among the collections severely impacted by the muddy waters were those in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. Book conservators from the United States and Western Europe were called in to help with the recovery efforts. The exhibit features a British team\, headed by Peter Waters\, which created a washing-drying-mending-rebinding system to deal with tens of thousands of books damaged by the disaster.\n\nThe two most important outcomes of the tragedy are the professional training of library conservators and the establishment of disaster preparedness and response programs.\n\nLearn more and register for the symposium\, The Flood in Florence\, 1966: A Fifty-Year Retrospective\, happening November 3-4\, 2016. https://www.lib.umich.edu/flood-florence-1966-fifty-year-retrospective

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Symposium: Ambiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\nAmbiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural is a symposium and concurrent exhibition that situates contemporary discourses and practices of architecture and landscape within the context of the Postnatural\; the era of climate change\, the Anthropocene\, and altered ecologies. The symposium asks: In a time when humans have been fundamentally displaced from their presumed place of privilege\, philosophically as well as experientially\, should the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture consider displacing themselves as well\, in order to establish new affiliations and avail new ways to approach contemporary questions of design in relation to the environment?\nBy bringing designers and scholars from these fields together the symposium and exhibition will highlight projects and ideas that are engaged with these issues from a variety of perspectives\, ranging from scale and experience to questions of matter. Participants will present research and work that use tactics of mediation to understand\, imagine\, interrupt\, and invent artifacts that exist at the large spatial and slow temporal scale of the Anthropocene.\nAmbiguous Territory will present design ideas and proposals from architects\, artists\, and landscape architects whose work challenges their disciplinary boundaries and long-held anthropocentric orientation and redefines the relationship between built and natural environments in an era of ecological anxiety.\nChairs:       \nKathy Velikov\, Associate Professor at the University of Michigan and principal of RVTR\nCathryn Dwyre\, Visiting Associate Professor at Pratt institute School of Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nChris Perry\, Associate Professor at Rensselaer Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nDavid Salomon\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Ithaca College.\nKeynotes:\nLiam Young\, urbanist\, designer and futurist\; founder of the futures think tank Tomorrows Thoughts Today (tomorrowsthoughtstoday.com)\; the ‘Unknown Fields Division’ (unknownfieldsdivision.com) at the Architectural Association in London\, and the ‘Fiction and Entertainment’ program at SciArc\nDavid Gissen\, author\, historian\, and Professor of Architecture and Visual and Critical Studies at the California College of the Arts and co-director of the Experimental History Project (http://davidgissen.org/)\nFor a full list of speakers and bios\, please visit the Ambiguous Territory symposium web page. \nAmbiguous Territory Symposium Schedule\nAll events in Taubman College Commons unless otherwise noted\nThursday October 5th\n5:00pm\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition Reception\n(Taubman College Gallery)\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: Liam Young\n(Art + Architecture Auditorium)\n \nFriday October 6th (all events occuring in The Commons)\n9:00am\nCoffee\n9:30am\nWelcome: Dean Jonathan Massey\nIntroductory Remarks: Associate Dean of Research and Creative Practice Geoffrey Thün\nSymposium Introduction: Kathy Velikov\n10:00am\nAtmospheric Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Kathy Velikov\nSpeaker 1: Christopher Hight\nSpeaker 2: Lydia Kallipoliti\nSpeaker 3: Sean Lally\nRespondent: Meredith Miller\nRoundtable Discussion\n12:00pm\nLunch Break (lunch not provided)\n1:00pm\nBiologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: David Salomon\nSpeaker 1: Jennifer Peeples\nSpeaker 2: Linsdey french\nSpeaker 3: Ricardo de Ostos\nRespondent: Ellie Abrons\nRoundtable Discussion\n3:00pm\nCoffee Break\n3:30pm\nGeologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Cathryn Dwyre and Chris Perry\nSpeaker 1: Alessandra Ponte\nSpeaker 2: Bradley Cantrell\nSpeaker 3: Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy\nRespondent: Mark Lindquist\nRoundtable Discussion\n5:30pm\nBreak\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: David Gissen\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition \nSeptember 27th – October 18th 2017\nUniversity of Michigan Taubman College Gallery\nDecember 2018 – January 2019\nPratt Manhattan Gallery\, New York

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Great Lakes Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a Great Lakes Seminar Series presentation:\nPresenter: Silvia Newell\, Assistant Professor\, Wright State University\nTitle: Nitrogen cycling in eutrophic systems: Case studies in Lakes Erie and Taihu\n\nTo participate remotely via webinar\, please register at: https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/1637315028733554436.\n\nAbstract: Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (HABs) in Lake Taihu and western Lake Erie are driven largely by agricultural nitrogen (N) and phosphorus. Cyanobacterial community dominance and HAB development may depend on ammonium (NH4+) availability\, and increased NH4+ has been linked to increased toxin production. Microcystis\, the dominant toxic cyanobacterial genus in both lakes\, cannot fix atmospheric N2\; consequently\, it must compete for NH4+ with other primary producers. Understanding the factors that govern N cycling and NH4+ availability is therefore crucial for identifying conditions that stimulate and maintain HABs.\n\nBio: Silvia Newell is an Assistant Professor at Wright State University in Dayton\, OH. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Kabuki actors were superstars in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japan. They were admired by passionate fans with an insatiable appetite for images of them\, fed by a publishing industry that mass-produced colorful woodblock prints of actors on stage that could be cheaply purchased as souvenirs of or substitutes for a theater experience. Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols\, including off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans’ voyeuristic curiosity about their favorite actors’ lives\, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groupings\, and even death portraits of especially famous actors. This introduction to the visual culture surrounding kabuki theater includes prints by major artists such as Utagawa Toyokuni (1769–1825)\, Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865)\, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861)\, and Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900).\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the William T. and Dora G. Hunter Endowment\, AISIN\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, and the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the Japan Foundation and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Moving Image: Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Moving Image: Landscape explores traditional notions of landscape through four very different time-based works by artists Jim Campbell\, Antti Laitinen\, Joanie Lemercier\, and Rick Silva.\n\nCampbell’s recent body of work\, including Seal Rock\, presents pixilated images of landscapes created with grids of LEDs. The low-resolution LEDs create a tension between representation and abstraction\, provoking viewers to interpret visual information on their own. In the three-channel video It’s My Island Laitinen builds his own island in the Baltic Sea by dragging two hundred sand bags into the water over a period of three months. The work explores ideas of nationality\, citizenship\, and identity as the artist creates his own single-citizen micro-nation. Lemercier’s computer-generated print Landforms uses patterns of black dots and projected light to create the illusion of three-dimensionality and movement when seen from a distance. The effects are more realistic than a still image\, but still unsettlingly artificial. Silva’s Render Garden explores the digitized landscape\, including remix and glitch aesthetics\, through software that endlessly generates new plant combinations.\n\nThroughout the next year UMMA will present a series of exhibitions drawn from the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection in Istanbul. The Borusan’s thirty-year-old collection includes significant works across a variety of genres\, and since 2011 it has focused on media arts. The works exhibited here address formal concerns such as abstraction and color\, and conceptual topics such as identity or ecological issues\; many represent traditional categories such as portraiture and landscape that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\,\nthe Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Protecting Wisdom: Tibetan Book Covers from the MacLean Collection
DESCRIPTION:Protecting Wisdom: Tibetan Book Covers from the MacLean Collection is the first major exhibition to examine the subject of Tibetan book covers. For Tibetan Buddhists\, books are a divine presence in which the Buddha lives and reveals himself\, and they are venerated and handled with the utmost respect. The exhibition features 33 book covers dating from the eleventh to the eighteenth century that represent the glorious iconographic array and non-figural decoration typical of these sacred items. The majority of covers in the exhibition are Tibetan Buddhist\, but the exhibition also includes a rare Bon-religion cover and two covers from Mongolia\, as well as an important pair of covers produced circa 1411 for the Chinese Ming emperor Yongle. Protecting Wisdom presents a stunning visual display that illuminates a virtually unknown type of art\, one that will charm and intrigue both those familiar and unfamiliar with Tibetan art.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Aesthetic Movement
DESCRIPTION:Pictorialism was the first truly international photography movement\, and its practitioners\, among them Alfred Stieglitz\, Edward Steichen and Gertrude Käsebier\, sought to position photography as a legitimate aesthetic art form. They favored soft-focus images that drew upon the conventions of important artists and movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites\, James McNeill Whistler\, Japonisme\, and Art Nouveau are readily seen in the images on view in this exhibition.\n\nIn 1902 Alfred Stieglitz and other Pictorialist photographers founded the Photo-Secession in New York\, with Camera Work as the flagship periodical that published images by the group. Their poetic compositions drawn from contemporary life\, combined with the use of expensive and labor-intensive printing materials such as platinum and gum bichromate\, established these photographs as complex and nuanced works of high artistic quality. The exhibition features work by the principal Pictorialists\, including Stieglitz\, Steichen\, Käsebier\, Clarence White\, Paul Strand\, and Alvin Langdon Coburn.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces: Reconstructing the History of a Chokwe Mask
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Traces focuses on one artwork from the Museum's African holdings: a Chokwe mask that was collected in 1905 near the Angolan city of Dundo by the German explorer Leo Frobenius. Its presence at UMMA today—almost 7\,500 miles away from the context in which it was originally created\, used\, and valued—is the result of a long and tumultuous journey\, spanning a hundred years\, three continents\, and numerous people whose lives are forever connected to the artifact that passed through their hands.\nTraces tells the stories of some of these individuals as it reconstructs the “biography” of the mask. Drawing on the Museum’s African art collection and complemented with national loans\, the exhibition is informed by research that exposes the mask’s many layers and restores some of its historical complexity. Visitors will be able to look closely\, and in great detail\, at this intriguing artwork and its fascinating story.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the James and Vivian Curtis Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Center for the Education of Women's Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Health\, History\, Demography & Development (H2D2)
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe expansion of Medicaid under the ACA has extended health insurance to millions of previously uninsured low income adults. This paper analyzes the effect of this expansion of insurance on medical treatment received in the emergency department. It uses State Emergency Department Database (SEDD) discharge data from 2013 to 2014 to estimate the effect of the change in insurance on duration of stay\, number of procedures performed\, number of diagnoses recorded\, and the average charge per procedure for all and subgroups of patients in the emergency department. Using a difference-in-differences model\, we compare the outcome variables in expanding states to those in non-expanding states. We find that the changes in treatment are not limited to those with newly acquired Medicaid coverage. Duration of stay declines up to 49 minutes for the young and the elderly\, while it increases by up to 8 minutes for the working age adults. The number of procedures increases for all patients in expanding states by up to 0.33 procedures\, for young\, working age adults\, and elderly. The number of diagnoses\, meanwhile\, declines between .05 to 0.27 diagnoses for all groups. The estimates are robust to specification and propensity matching of patients in expanding and non-expanding states. These results suggest that health insurance expansion is likely to result in increase in intensity of treatment in the emergency room for all patients\, irrespective of insurance status. With the average charge for procedure at $721 in our data\, the increase in the number of procedures for Medicaid the three states our analysis corresponds to additional $227 million in charges\, which constitutes 7.3% of the total increase in Medicaid expenditure in these states between 2013 and 2014. These estimates suggest that the costs associated with expanding insurance coverage should include those associated with changes in treatment of patients. These costs are not limited to Medicaid\, as they extend to patients with private insurance\, Medicare\, and self-paying patients.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Wonderland Gems & Jewels
DESCRIPTION:Betsy Lehndorff’s jewelry is influenced by her life in Hubbard Lake in northeastern Michigan. Using her stone cutting and silversmithing skills\, she takes on six subjects that impact her isolated world: water\, winter\, plants\, critters\, rocks and the heavens. Her work\, often representational and sometimes narrative\, challenges the idea of jewelry as a status symbol. Lehndorff was born and raised in Ann Arbor\, and lived in Colorado until 2012. She is a granddaughter of renowned architect Albert Kahn (Hill Auditorium and the “Old Main” U-M Hospital) and daughter of Dr. Edgar A. Kahn\, who headed the neurosurgery department at the U-M Hospital in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Geometry/Topology
DESCRIPTION:It is a classical result that the spectrum of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary condition on a compact Riemannian manifold forms a sequence going to positive infinity\, and the asymptotic growth rate is determined by the volume and dimension of the manifold. This asyptotic growth rate is known as Weyl's Law. Historically\, this motivated Kac to ask the question \"Can one hear the shape of a drum?\" In general\, we can ask what geometric properties of a manifold are determined by the spectrum of its Laplacian.\n\nI plan to give an introduction to Weyl's law for compact manifolds and then show how it also holds for singular\, projective\, complex algebraic varieties. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:CM-AMO Seminar | Temperature-like Variables in Granular Materials
DESCRIPTION:Statistical mechanics has provided a powerful tool for understanding the thermodynamics of materials. Because granular materials exhibit reproducible statistical distributions which depend in simple ways on macroscopic parameters such as volume and pressure\, it is tempting to create a statistical mechanics of athermal materials. I will describe a suite of experiments on two-dimensional granular materials which investigate to what extent these ideas are meaningful. For example\, under agitated conditions\, we measure both bulk and particle-scale dynamics\, and find a number of thermal-like behaviors including diffusive dynamics\, a granular Boyle’s Law with a van der Waals-like equation of state\, and energy equipartition for rotational and translational degrees of freedom. However\, the scarcity of free volume within a granular material provides a crucial control on the dynamics\, and each of the above thermal-like behaviors is accompanied by interesting caveats. In an apparatus designed to generate a large number of static configurations\, we test whether or not various temperature-like variables are able to equilibrate between a subsystem and a bath. We find that while a volume-based temperature known as “compactivity” fails to equilibrate\, a stress-based temperature succeeds in satisfying the zeroth law. However\, we also identify history-dependent effects which point to the importance of frictional forces in controlling the mechanics of granular materials.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Queering Families: The Postmodern Partnerships of Cisgender Women and Transgender Men
DESCRIPTION:Ozzie and Harriet\, move over. A new couple is moving into the neighborhood. In the postmodern era\, advances in medical technologies allow some individuals categorized female at birth to live in accordance with their gender identities\, as men. While a growing body of literature on transgender men's experiences has come to the forefront\, relatively little exists to document the experiences of their partners. In Queering Families: The Postmodern Partnerships of Cisgender Women and Transgender Men\, Carla A. Pfeffer brings these experiences to light through interviews with the group most likely to partner and form families with transgender men: non-transgender (cisgender) women. \n\nDrawing upon in-depth interviews with fifty cisgender women partners of transgender men from across the United States and Canada\, Pfeffer details the experiences of a community that often seems unremarkable and ordinary on its surface. Cisgender women who partner with transgender men who are socially \"read\" as male are often (mis)perceived as part of a heterosexual couple or family. Yet not all cisgender women who partner with transgender men are comfortable with this invisible existence and comfortable normativity. Instead\, many of the cisgender women Pfeffer interviews hold deeply-valued queer identities that may be erased in their partnerships with transgender men. In this talk\, Pfeffer will detail the struggles and strengths of these postmodern \"Harriets\" as they work to build identities\, partnerships\, families\, and communities.\n\nCarla A. Pfeffer completed her doctoral work at the University of Michigan. She currently holds a joint appointment in Sociology and Women's and Gender Studies at the University of South Carolina. Her research\, employing qualitative and mixed-methods approaches\, considers thorny intersections between social stigma\, identity\, resistance\, and structure.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Student Algebraic Geometry
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this talk is to introduce how to use some fine techniques in algebraic geometry to obtain concrete combinatorial results. I will assume almost no background.\n\nRoughly\, \"arithmetic statistics\" refers to problems of counting a massive amount of arithmetic objects. For example\, consider the smooth affine plane curves of the form y^2 = f(x) with deg(f) = d over a finite field of p elements. A natural question to ask is: what is the probability of a degree d random curve to have many (i.e.\, 2p) points? An explicit answer to this question is known when d goes to infinity\, but one may ask what happens when d is some large finite integer.\n\nIn this talk\, I will explain how to approach such a question using explicit Betti numbers of manifolds called \"configuration spaces\". The connection of point-counting and Betti numbers can be established by a machine called \"\'etale cohomology\"\, especially via Grothedieck trace formula\, an analog of Lefschetz fixed point theorem in algebraic topology. In particular\, I will sketch how the convergence in d of the distribution of points on curves of the form y^2 = f(x) is a consequence of homological stability. Speaker(s): GilYoung Cheong (UM)
