Out of this came an artistic exploration and refinement of birds using ceramic vessels as the starting point. Whimsical additions such as tails and beaks give each bird an individual personality. Each bird is perched on an individually carved limestone base to enhance the unique qualities that each bird displays. Cyanobacterial community dominance and HAB development may depend on ammonium (NH4+) availability, and increased NH4+ has been linked to increased toxin production. Microcystis, the dominant toxic cyanobacterial genus in both lakes, cannot fix atmospheric N2; consequently, it must compete for NH4+ with other primary producers. Understanding the factors that govern N cycling and NH4+ availability is therefore crucial for identifying conditions that stimulate and maintain HABs.\r\n\r\nBio: Silvia Newell is an Assistant Professor at Wright State University in Dayton, OH. She has a Ph.D. in Geosciences from Princeton University. Her dissertation focused on biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen in low-oxygen marine environments in Chesapeake Bay and the Arabian Sea. For her post-doctoral work, first at Princeton and then at Boston University, she continued her exploration of the nitrogen cycle in the Sargasso Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and Cape Cod. Currently, her work at Wright State focuses on hypereutrophic Lake Erie, Lake Okeechobee, and Lake Taihu in China, as well as local research on the Great Miami River and small lakes.\r\n\r\nImportant Visitor Information\r\nAll in-person seminar attendees are required to receive a visitor badge from the front desk at the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory facility. They were admired by passionate fans with an insatiable appetite for images of them, fed by a publishing industry that mass-produced colorful woodblock prints of actors on stage that could be cheaply purchased as souvenirs of or substitutes for a theater experience. Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols, including off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans\u2019 voyeuristic curiosity about their favorite actors\u2019 lives, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groupings, and even death portraits of especially famous actors. This introduction to the visual culture surrounding kabuki theater includes prints by major artists such as Utagawa Toyokuni (1769\u20131825), Utagawa Kunisada (1786\u20131865), Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797\u20131861), and Toyohara Kunichika (1835\u20131900).\r\n\r\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, the National Endowment for the Arts, the William T. and Dora G. The Borusan\u2019s thirty-year-old collection includes significant works across a variety of genres, and since 2011 it has focused on media arts. This paper analyzes the effect of this expansion of insurance on medical treatment received in the emergency department. It uses State Emergency Department Database (SEDD) discharge data from 2013 to 2014 to estimate the effect of the change in insurance on duration of stay, number of procedures performed, number of diagnoses recorded, and the average charge per procedure for all and subgroups of patients in the emergency department. Using a difference-in-differences model, we compare the outcome variables in expanding states to those in non-expanding states. We find that the changes in treatment are not limited to those with newly acquired Medicaid coverage. Duration of stay declines up to 49 minutes for the young and the elderly, while it increases by up to 8 minutes for the working age adults. The number of procedures increases for all patients in expanding states by up to 0.33 procedures, for young, working age adults, and elderly. The number of diagnoses, meanwhile, declines between .05 to 0.27 diagnoses for all groups. The estimates are robust to specification and propensity matching of patients in expanding and non-expanding states. These results suggest that health insurance expansion is likely to result in increase in intensity of treatment in the emergency room for all patients, irrespective of insurance status. With the average charge for procedure at $721 in our data, the increase in the number of procedures for Medicaid the three states our analysis corresponds to additional $227 million in charges, which constitutes 7.3% of the total increase in Medicaid expenditure in these states between 2013 and 2014. These estimates suggest that the costs associated with expanding insurance coverage should include those associated with changes in treatment of patients. Because granular materials exhibit reproducible statistical distributions which depend in simple ways on macroscopic parameters such as volume and pressure, it is tempting to create a statistical mechanics of athermal materials. I will describe a suite of experiments on two-dimensional granular materials which investigate to what extent these ideas are meaningful. For example, under agitated conditions, we measure both bulk and particle-scale dynamics, and find a number of thermal-like behaviors including diffusive dynamics, a granular Boyle\u2019s Law with a van der Waals-like equation of state, and energy equipartition for rotational and translational degrees of freedom. However, the scarcity of free volume within a granular material provides a crucial control on the dynamics, and each of the above thermal-like behaviors is accompanied by interesting caveats. In an apparatus designed to generate a large number of static configurations, we test whether or not various temperature-like variables are able to equilibrate between a subsystem and a bath. We find that while a volume-based temperature known as \u201ccompactivity\u201d fails to equilibrate, a stress-based temperature succeeds in satisfying the zeroth law. In Queering Families: The Postmodern Partnerships of Cisgender Women and Transgender Men, Carla A. Pfeffer brings these experiences to light through interviews with the group most likely to partner and form families with transgender men: non-transgender (cisgender) women. \r\n\r\nDrawing upon in-depth interviews with fifty cisgender women partners of transgender men from across the United States and Canada, Pfeffer details the experiences of a community that often seems unremarkable and ordinary on its surface.
