SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Avian Vessels: Mixed Media Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Cincinnati based sculptor Karen Heyl has been professionally sculpting stone since 1984. She is best known for bas-relief limestone sculptures\, but in 2011 she developed an interest in sculpting clay using a similar relief carving technique. Out of this came an artistic exploration and refinement of birds using ceramic vessels as the starting point. Whimsical additions such as tails and beaks give each bird an individual personality. Each bird is perched on an individually carved limestone base to enhance the unique qualities that each bird displays. Heyl’s affinity for nature extends from her art to her love of gardening and the occasional golf game.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Divided Images: Fiber
DESCRIPTION:Jill Ault is an Ann Arbor studio artist working in fiber\, primarily quilts\, with a BFA degree in painting from Eastern Michigan University. Her quilts are constructed of multiple copies of an image: a photograph\, a graphic design or a painting. She digitally prints variations of the image on fabric and divides the copies into many small squares (no two alike). When she carefully reassembles and sews together the squares\, parts of the image seem to move across and down the surface of the quilt. Ault exhibits nationally at fiber and quilt shows\, such as Quilt National in Athens\, Ohio and Fiberart International in Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Florence Flood\, November 1966
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit focuses on the destruction of Florence during the flood on November 4\, 1966. Among the collections severely impacted by the muddy waters were those in the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. Book conservators from the United States and Western Europe were called in to help with the recovery efforts. The exhibit features a British team\, headed by Peter Waters\, which created a washing-drying-mending-rebinding system to deal with tens of thousands of books damaged by the disaster.\n\nThe two most important outcomes of the tragedy are the professional training of library conservators and the establishment of disaster preparedness and response programs.\n\nLearn more and register for the symposium\, The Flood in Florence\, 1966: A Fifty-Year Retrospective\, happening November 3-4\, 2016. https://www.lib.umich.edu/flood-florence-1966-fifty-year-retrospective

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Symposium: Ambiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public\nAmbiguous Territory: Architecture\, Landscape\, and the Postnatural is a symposium and concurrent exhibition that situates contemporary discourses and practices of architecture and landscape within the context of the Postnatural\; the era of climate change\, the Anthropocene\, and altered ecologies. The symposium asks: In a time when humans have been fundamentally displaced from their presumed place of privilege\, philosophically as well as experientially\, should the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture consider displacing themselves as well\, in order to establish new affiliations and avail new ways to approach contemporary questions of design in relation to the environment?\nBy bringing designers and scholars from these fields together the symposium and exhibition will highlight projects and ideas that are engaged with these issues from a variety of perspectives\, ranging from scale and experience to questions of matter. Participants will present research and work that use tactics of mediation to understand\, imagine\, interrupt\, and invent artifacts that exist at the large spatial and slow temporal scale of the Anthropocene.\nAmbiguous Territory will present design ideas and proposals from architects\, artists\, and landscape architects whose work challenges their disciplinary boundaries and long-held anthropocentric orientation and redefines the relationship between built and natural environments in an era of ecological anxiety.\nChairs:       \nKathy Velikov\, Associate Professor at the University of Michigan and principal of RVTR\nCathryn Dwyre\, Visiting Associate Professor at Pratt institute School of Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nChris Perry\, Associate Professor at Rensselaer Architecture and partner at pneumastudio\nDavid Salomon\, Assistant Professor of Art History at Ithaca College.\nKeynotes:\nLiam Young\, urbanist\, designer and futurist\; founder of the futures think tank Tomorrows Thoughts Today (tomorrowsthoughtstoday.com)\; the ‘Unknown Fields Division’ (unknownfieldsdivision.com) at the Architectural Association in London\, and the ‘Fiction and Entertainment’ program at SciArc\nDavid Gissen\, author\, historian\, and Professor of Architecture and Visual and Critical Studies at the California College of the Arts and co-director of the Experimental History Project (http://davidgissen.org/)\nFor a full list of speakers and bios\, please visit the Ambiguous Territory symposium web page. \nAmbiguous Territory Symposium Schedule\nAll events in Taubman College Commons unless otherwise noted\nThursday October 5th\n5:00pm\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition Reception\n(Taubman College Gallery)\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: Liam Young\n(Art + Architecture Auditorium)\n \nFriday October 6th (all events occuring in The Commons)\n9:00am\nCoffee\n9:30am\nWelcome: Dean Jonathan Massey\nIntroductory Remarks: Associate Dean of Research and Creative Practice Geoffrey Thün\nSymposium Introduction: Kathy Velikov\n10:00am\nAtmospheric Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Kathy Velikov\nSpeaker 1: Christopher Hight\nSpeaker 2: Lydia Kallipoliti\nSpeaker 3: Sean Lally\nRespondent: Meredith Miller\nRoundtable Discussion\n12:00pm\nLunch Break (lunch not provided)\n1:00pm\nBiologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: David Salomon\nSpeaker 1: Jennifer Peeples\nSpeaker 2: Linsdey french\nSpeaker 3: Ricardo de Ostos\nRespondent: Ellie Abrons\nRoundtable Discussion\n3:00pm\nCoffee Break\n3:30pm\nGeologic Mediations Panel\nIntroduction: Cathryn Dwyre and Chris Perry\nSpeaker 1: Alessandra Ponte\nSpeaker 2: Bradley Cantrell\nSpeaker 3: Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy\nRespondent: Mark Lindquist\nRoundtable Discussion\n5:30pm\nBreak\n6:00pm\nKeynote Lecture: David Gissen\nAmbiguous Territory Exhibition \nSeptember 27th – October 18th 2017\nUniversity of Michigan Taubman College Gallery\nDecember 2018 – January 2019\nPratt Manhattan Gallery\, New York

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Kabuki actors were superstars in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Japan. They were admired by passionate fans with an insatiable appetite for images of them\, fed by a publishing industry that mass-produced colorful woodblock prints of actors on stage that could be cheaply purchased as souvenirs of or substitutes for a theater experience. Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols\, including off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans’ voyeuristic curiosity about their favorite actors’ lives\, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groupings\, and even death portraits of especially famous actors. This introduction to the visual culture surrounding kabuki theater includes prints by major artists such as Utagawa Toyokuni (1769–1825)\, Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865)\, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861)\, and Toyohara Kunichika (1835–1900).\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the William T. and Dora G. Hunter Endowment\, AISIN\, the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation\, and the University of Michigan Center for Japanese Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the Japan Foundation and the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Moving Image: Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Moving Image: Landscape explores traditional notions of landscape through four very different time-based works by artists Jim Campbell\, Antti Laitinen\, Joanie Lemercier\, and Rick Silva.\n\nCampbell’s recent body of work\, including Seal Rock\, presents pixilated images of landscapes created with grids of LEDs. The low-resolution LEDs create a tension between representation and abstraction\, provoking viewers to interpret visual information on their own. In the three-channel video It’s My Island Laitinen builds his own island in the Baltic Sea by dragging two hundred sand bags into the water over a period of three months. The work explores ideas of nationality\, citizenship\, and identity as the artist creates his own single-citizen micro-nation. Lemercier’s computer-generated print Landforms uses patterns of black dots and projected light to create the illusion of three-dimensionality and movement when seen from a distance. The effects are more realistic than a still image\, but still unsettlingly artificial. Silva’s Render Garden explores the digitized landscape\, including remix and glitch aesthetics\, through software that endlessly generates new plant combinations.\n\nThroughout the next year UMMA will present a series of exhibitions drawn from the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection in Istanbul. The Borusan’s thirty-year-old collection includes significant works across a variety of genres\, and since 2011 it has focused on media arts. The works exhibited here address formal concerns such as abstraction and color\, and conceptual topics such as identity or ecological issues\; many represent traditional categories such as portraiture and landscape that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\,\nthe Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Protecting Wisdom: Tibetan Book Covers from the MacLean Collection
DESCRIPTION:Protecting Wisdom: Tibetan Book Covers from the MacLean Collection is the first major exhibition to examine the subject of Tibetan book covers. For Tibetan Buddhists\, books are a divine presence in which the Buddha lives and reveals himself\, and they are venerated and handled with the utmost respect. The exhibition features 33 book covers dating from the eleventh to the eighteenth century that represent the glorious iconographic array and non-figural decoration typical of these sacred items. The majority of covers in the exhibition are Tibetan Buddhist\, but the exhibition also includes a rare Bon-religion cover and two covers from Mongolia\, as well as an important pair of covers produced circa 1411 for the Chinese Ming emperor Yongle. Protecting Wisdom presents a stunning visual display that illuminates a virtually unknown type of art\, one that will charm and intrigue both those familiar and unfamiliar with Tibetan art.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:The Aesthetic Movement
DESCRIPTION:Pictorialism was the first truly international photography movement\, and its practitioners\, among them Alfred Stieglitz\, Edward Steichen and Gertrude Käsebier\, sought to position photography as a legitimate aesthetic art form. They favored soft-focus images that drew upon the conventions of important artists and movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites\, James McNeill Whistler\, Japonisme\, and Art Nouveau are readily seen in the images on view in this exhibition.\n\nIn 1902 Alfred Stieglitz and other Pictorialist photographers founded the Photo-Secession in New York\, with Camera Work as the flagship periodical that published images by the group. Their poetic compositions drawn from contemporary life\, combined with the use of expensive and labor-intensive printing materials such as platinum and gum bichromate\, established these photographs as complex and nuanced works of high artistic quality. The exhibition features work by the principal Pictorialists\, including Stieglitz\, Steichen\, Käsebier\, Clarence White\, Paul Strand\, and Alvin Langdon Coburn.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Traces: Reconstructing the History of a Chokwe Mask
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition Traces focuses on one artwork from the Museum's African holdings: a Chokwe mask that was collected in 1905 near the Angolan city of Dundo by the German explorer Leo Frobenius. Its presence at UMMA today—almost 7\,500 miles away from the context in which it was originally created\, used\, and valued—is the result of a long and tumultuous journey\, spanning a hundred years\, three continents\, and numerous people whose lives are forever connected to the artifact that passed through their hands.\nTraces tells the stories of some of these individuals as it reconstructs the “biography” of the mask. Drawing on the Museum’s African art collection and complemented with national loans\, the exhibition is informed by research that exposes the mask’s many layers and restores some of its historical complexity. Visitors will be able to look closely\, and in great detail\, at this intriguing artwork and its fascinating story.\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the James and Vivian Curtis Endowment. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Center for the Education of Women's Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Beyond the Book: Rethinking Biblical Religion
DESCRIPTION:Before the Book: Rethinking Biblical Religion\n\nWe often imagine that the Bible began its life as the normative religious tradition(s) of ancient Israel. The research presented in this colloquium tells a new story about the origins of biblical literature within its ancient Near Eastern context.\n\nFeaturing: Simeon Chavel\, Associate Professor of Hebrew Bible\, University of Chicago\; Abraham Winitzer\, Associate Professor of Near Eastern Languages and History\, University of Notre Dame\; Piotr Michalowski\, George G. Cameron Professor Emeritus of Ancient Near Eastern Language and Civilizations\, University of Michigan\n\nThursday\, December 8th\, 2016\, 11:30am-2:00pm\nInstitute for the Humanities Osterman Common Room\, 1022 Thayer Building\n202 S Thayer St\, First Floor\n\nIn recognition of the lunch hour\, light refreshments will be served.\n\n\nSession I\n11:30am-12:40pm\n\nThe Argumentative Nature of Ancient Authors and Their Biblical Works:\nThe Law Codes\n\nSimeon Chavel\, University of Chicago\n\nThe presentation will propose that ancient authors and the works that have since become biblical cannot be taken to reflect the general view in their contemporary society or even the shared view of complete institutions. Rather some\, at least\, ought to be taken as the views of individuals interacting within their cultures\, advancing unique\, even idiosyncratic arguments about the past\, the present and the future\, and whose works and views may have perplexed and even put off their audience. The presentation will focus on the biblical legal material to illustrate what recommends this approach.\n\nSession II\n12:45pm-2:00pm\n\nBloody Murder! \nOn the Afterlife of Atra˙asīs and Man’s prima materia in Genesis 1-11\n\nAbraham Winitzer\, University of Notre Dame\n\nThe Primeval History in Genesis 1-11 has long been recognized as drawing inspiration from beyond Israel in the formation of this foundational portion of the Bible. This paper considers a case study in this regard\, concerning the interface of pre-Biblical traditions and their reflections in the Biblical text. Specifically\, this involves thinking about the primary elements comprising primeval man in terms of origins and adaptations. Along with the mystical divine spirit (rûah≥)\, the nexus of earth (ºada¢mâ) in the formation of man (ºa¢da¢m) with that of blood (da¢m) will be considered\, as a case of a Biblical formulation of materials originally beyond the Book. In so doing I will seek to demonstrate how this portion of the textualization process – from the beyond to the Book – took shape. \n\nRespondent: Piotr Michalowski\, George G. Cameron Professor Emeritus of Ancient Near Eastern Language and Civilizations\, University of Michigan\n\nThis colloquium is cosponsored by the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies\, the department of Near Eastern Studies\, the LSA Dean’s Office\, UMOR Small Grants to Support Major Conferences\, the Rackham Dean’s Strategic Initiative Fund\, the American Academy of Jewish Research\, and the American Academy of Religion.\n\nThis event is part of the Beyond the Bible: Rethinking Biblical Religion speaker series at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Ion Channels\, Critical Points and Emergent Phenomena in Biology
DESCRIPTION:A Special Joint Seminar with Complex Systems and Biophysics.\n\nAbstract:\nBiological systems are immensely complicated at the molecular scale. However\, their macroscopic behavior is rich\, but often comprehensible. I will first present a geometric framework for quantifying this emergent simplicity\, highlighting parallels with continuum limits in physics. I will then focus in on the plasma membrane\, a two dimensional liquid that surrounds mammalian cells. Recent experiments have demonstrated that this membrane is close to a liquid-liquid critical point\, distinguished by emergent time and length scales much larger than individual molecules. We have recently shown that anesthetics take membranes away from criticality while anesthetic reversers restore criticality. Membrane criticality has profound implications for ion channels\, mediating long-ranged forces\, sensitive allosteric regulation and non-Markovian dynamics. This has led us to hypothesize that anesthetics influence ion channel function by disrupting the critical membrane.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Biopsychology Colloquium Talk
DESCRIPTION:The value of action: dissecting how the brain makes value and movement decisions\n\nDeciding what actions to perform is central to how our inner selves interact with the outer world\, a reality that is often not fully realized until these abilities are lost. The basal ganglia\, a subcortical structure that consists of two opposing pathways\, has been proposed to be responsible for encoding the reinforcement\, valuation and selection of actions. To better understand this interface of cognition and movement in this region\, we trained mice to make goal-oriented reaches while delivering cell-type-specific\, optogenetic stimulation during only the fastest or slowest reaches. Contrary to prevailing notions of basal ganglia function\, we found that biasing the activity of either pathway positively or negatively reinforced whatever action was stimulated. The direction of the reinforcement was determined by which pathway was stimulated and was independent of the valence of the action itself\, implying a role in assessing value but not action selection. Additionally\, despite most decisions existing on a spectrum of options (like the velocity of a movement)\, most neuronal decision models only work for binary choices (left or right\, stop or start). To address this issue\, we combined computational modeling with simultaneous activity recordings dozens of neurons to create a mechanism that explain how the neural circuits make decisions along a continuous spectrum. These experiments shed new light on how decisions are made suggest that the learning and selection of how to behave occurs in a hierarchical system.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Historical Archaeologies of Overseas Chinese Laborers on the Transcontinental Railroad
DESCRIPTION:This talk will provide an overview of current research on Overseas Chinese communities in the United States\, focusing in particular on work camps occupied by the Chinese laborers who built the first transcontinental railroad during the late 1860s. While historical archaeologists have investigated sites occupied by ChineseAmericans since the 1960s\, the past decade has seen both a burst of new research activities as well as increased public interest. The audience will be introduced to the basic artifact types found on sites occupied by Overseas Chinese in the 19th century. Issues addressed will include distribution mechanisms as well as the role of particular artifacts for group bonding -and- marking social difference. I will draw parallels between the challenges faced by Chinese immigrants in the nineteenth century and our current political situation\, focusing on the meaning of labor\, the racial construction of the United States\, and variant moral discourses. Finally\, I will summarize what questions remain to be answered and what we can expect from the sub-field in the coming years.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Wonderland Gems & Jewels
DESCRIPTION:Betsy Lehndorff’s jewelry is influenced by her life in Hubbard Lake in northeastern Michigan. Using her stone cutting and silversmithing skills\, she takes on six subjects that impact her isolated world: water\, winter\, plants\, critters\, rocks and the heavens. Her work\, often representational and sometimes narrative\, challenges the idea of jewelry as a status symbol. Lehndorff was born and raised in Ann Arbor\, and lived in Colorado until 2012. She is a granddaughter of renowned architect Albert Kahn (Hill Auditorium and the “Old Main” U-M Hospital) and daughter of Dr. Edgar A. Kahn\, who headed the neurosurgery department at the U-M Hospital in the 1960s.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Commutative Algebra
DESCRIPTION:This is based on joint work with Daniel Hernandez.\n\nThe Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of an m-primary ideal is a well-known example of an interesting numerical invariant in Commutative Algebra. For rings of positive characteristic\, there are many invariants that are analogous to the Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity\, but instead are defined via sequences of ideals related by the Frobenius map. In general\, such sequences exhibit nonpolynomial growth\, and existence of limits is a difficult question.\n\nIn this talk\, we will discuss a proof of the existence of many limits in this context. Our method realizes these positive characteristic multiplicities as volumes of regions in euclidean space. In addition to existence\, this association provides new insights into these numerical limits. We will discuss how some properties of these limits relate to facts from convex geometry. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Differential Equations
DESCRIPTION:In the theory of compressible aerodynamics\, a basic problem is to consider long time stability of motions of compressible gases in 3-D exterior domains. It can be reformulated as quasilinear wave equations in exterior domains with Neumann boundary conditions. In this talk\, I will introduce the related backgrounds both in fluid dynamics and in quasilinear wave equations. In addition\, when the equations fulfill null form\, I will explain\nthe ideas to prove the global well-posedness of this kind of initial-boundary value problem. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Development
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nWe worked with the City of Bogotá to study the effects of intensifying state presence on violence and perceptions of the state on the most violent city streets. States commonly use a mix of intensified armed force and public services to pacify violent areas and build legitimacy\, in situations ranging from inner city policing to counterinsurgency. This is a particularly common and celebrated approach in high crime areas of US cities. While backed by evidence from randomized trials\, these trials have been largely US-based and also fairly small in scale. Besides questions of statistical power\, this raises the question of whether these policing and state buillding strategies work at scale\, and also whether they have positive or negative externalities for surrounding areas. To investigate\, we worked with the Mayor’s office and police in Bogotá to identify the 2% (or 1\,919) highest-crime streets\, or \"hot spots”\, and assigned these streets to either: a two-thirds increase in police presence for 8 months\; basic municipal services (e.g. cleanup and lighting)\; both interventions\; or neither. Since violence could simply be displaced\, we structured the design to be able to estimate spatial spillovers within several radii. We find weak evidence of a 5-10% reduction in crime and violence\, with no evidence of displacement to neighboring streets. These impacts seem to be greatest when the treatment is most intense\, when streets receive both the policing and municipal services interventions\, especially in the first weeks of the intervention\, and in the highest crime streets. Even then the results are somewhat fragile and have low statistical power. We also see no evidence of an improvement in attitudes towards the police or city government. The results suggest that intensive\, highly targeted\, shorter term rotating interventions are promising\, but that the existing literature may overstate the benefits of intensive policing for reducing violence and increasing state legitimacy.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar: Counter-intuitive ecological dynamics: subsystem instability as a driving mechanism
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nIntuition suggests that increasing species mortality (e.g\, through harvesting) will cause a decrease in population abundance. Yet\, in some systems\, increased mortality causes an increase in abundance (panel A)\; this is known as a hydra effect. Classical ecological theory predicts that in predator-prey cycles\, peaks in prey density are followed by peaks in predator density. However\, cycles exhibiting different patterns (even the reverse!) have been observed in many empirical system (panel B). In this talk\, I show that the underlying mechanism connecting and driving these unexpected and counter-intuitive patterns is subsystem instability\, i.e.\, instability in a subcommunity of the whole community is responsible for altering population and community-level ecological dynamics. For predator-prey systems\, I show that both patterns are driven by instability in the prey subcommunity (caused by either interspecific or intraspecific prey variation). I then discuss how these results extend to communities of any size. Together\, this work suggests subsystem instability may be an important general mechanism driving population and community-level dynamics in natural systems.\n\nLight refreshments served at 4 p.m.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Topology
DESCRIPTION:While the geometric theory of finite type surfaces is well developed\, the study of hyperbolic geometric structures on infinite type surfaces (that is\, infinitely generated fundamental group) is still in its infancy. On the other hand\, the (complex analytic) theory of infinite type Riemann surfaces\, for example plane domains\, is much more advanced.\n\nIn this talk we will first describe some of the known results on the geometry and topology of such surfaces and then discuss new results involving the relationship between Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates and a version of the classical type problem (whether or not the surface carries a Green's function). In particular\, we study so called tight flute surfaces - possibly incomplete hyperbolic surfaces constructed by linearly gluing infinitely many tight pairs of pants along their cuffs - and the relationship between their type and geometric structure. This is joint work with Dragomir Saric. Speaker(s): Ara Basmajian (City University of New York)

SUMMARY:Performance:The Ragbirds Presents Ebird & Friends Holiday Show
DESCRIPTION:It happens in the middle of Michigan in the heart of December. Since 2008\, it has become a yearly tradition for The Ragbirds to present this unique family-friendly holiday show called Ebird & Friends. The songs and artists change from year to year\, but the spirit of the event is community\, the soul is creativity and the show is unforgettable. In addition of course to The Ragbirds\, this year's featured artists are: Seth Bernard\, The Accidentals\, Emilee Petersmark and Kate Pillsbury of The Crane Wives\, Frank Allison\, and Rick Chyme. The rest of the lineup includes Jen Sygit\, Ross Huff & Brennan Andes (The Macpodz)\, Brandon Smith (Appleseed Collective)\, Loren Kranz (Barbarosa Brothers)\, Jessica McCumons (The Understorey)\, Bethany Greczynski (Rhyta) Mike Boyd\, Dan Piccolo\, Shelly Smith and more. \"Ebird\"\, of course\, is Erin Zindle\, lead singer\, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of The Ragbirds. Erin’s budding childhood love of music was sparked at Christmastime. The holidays were the one time each year that the entire Zindle family gathered to make music together and that early communal experience of music took deep roots. Fiddles\, horns\, bagpipes\, guitars\, and instruments from all over the world will be sounding their voices together in harmony. Expect to be entertained\, surprised\, cheered and warmed by this collaborative artistic performance of new and old songs\, including The Ragbirds original songs inspired by the holiday. This show has become a phenomenon—it's up to three nights\, and it shows no signs of slowing down..

SUMMARY:Other:UMGASS presents \"THE SORCERER\"
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society (UMGASS)\, a Michigan tradition since 1947\, will begin their 70th anniversary season with the 1877 G&S classic The Sorcerer.  Performances will take place on Thursday\, December 8th\, Friday\, December 9th\, and Saturday\, December 10th at 8:00 pm\, and Saturday\, December 10th and Sunday\, December 11th at 2:00 pm\, at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theater in the Michigan League Building. The Sorcerer tells the story of how citizens in the village of Ploverleigh each end up in love with the wrong person\, thanks to the misguided attempt by young Alexis Pointdextre to have everyone share in the joy of his wedding day to his fiance Aline Sangazure.  Alexis hires a local Sorcerer\, John Wellington Wells\, to distribute a love-potion via the tea served at his engagement party.  Unfortunately\, everyone seems to fall under the potion's spell when in the company of exactly the wrong suitor\, including both Mr. Wells and Aline\, and hilarity ensues as the mismatched couples sort themselves out.Come see whether all can be set right in time for the wedding day!Ticketing information is posted at www.umgass.org.  Don't miss it if you can!
