Japanese Prints of Kabuki Theater from the Collection of the University of Michigan Museum of Art presents a selection of these dramatic prints that connected fans to their idols, including off- or backstage portrayals that satisfied fans\u2019 voyeuristic curiosity about their favorite actors\u2019 lives, fantasy scenes of actors in unlikely groupings, and even death portraits of especially famous actors. The low-resolution LEDs create a tension between representation and abstraction, provoking viewers to interpret visual information on their own. In the three-channel video It\u2019s My Island Laitinen builds his own island in the Baltic Sea by dragging two hundred sand bags into the water over a period of three months. The work explores ideas of nationality, citizenship, and identity as the artist creates his own single-citizen micro-nation. Lemercier\u2019s computer-generated print Landforms uses patterns of black dots and projected light to create the illusion of three-dimensionality and movement when seen from a distance. The effects are more realistic than a still image, but still unsettlingly artificial. Silva\u2019s Render Garden explores the digitized landscape, including remix and glitch aesthetics, through software that endlessly generates new plant combinations.\r\n\r\nThroughout the next year UMMA will present a series of exhibitions drawn from the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection in Istanbul. The Borusan\u2019s thirty-year-old collection includes significant works across a variety of genres, and since 2011 it has focused on media arts. Its presence at UMMA today\u2014almost 7,500 miles away from the context in which it was originally created, used, and valued\u2014is the result of a long and tumultuous journey, spanning a hundred years, three continents, and numerous people whose lives are forever connected to the artifact that passed through their hands.\r\nTraces tells the stories of some of these individuals as it reconstructs the \u201cbiography\u201d of the mask. Drawing on the Museum\u2019s African art collection and complemented with national loans, the exhibition is informed by research that exposes the mask\u2019s many layers and restores some of its historical complexity.
