Clark\u2019s exquisite, hand-cut paper creations has a historical perspective. Clark, a former U-M physician, began making pictorial paper snowflakes in 1984, and his first exhibit of these intricate works was at the University of Michigan Rackham Building in 1987, entitled A Hundred Holiday Snowflakes. Works from that show as well as from his first exhibit at the University Hospital in 1988 (including dinosaurs, clowns and patriotic themes) are on display in this retrospective exhibit. At the University of Michigan Health System, Reed works as a Bedside Artist for the Gifts of Art program and as an artist at the Turner Senior Resource Center. The symposium asks: In a time when humans have been fundamentally displaced from their presumed place of privilege, philosophically as well as experientially, should the disciplines of architecture and landscape architecture consider displacing themselves as well, in order to establish new affiliations and avail new ways to approach contemporary questions of design in relation to the environment?\r\nBy bringing designers and scholars from these fields together the symposium and exhibition will highlight projects and ideas that are engaged with these issues from a variety of perspectives, ranging from scale and experience to questions of matter. Reuther Library at Wayne State University\n5401 Cass Ave, Detroit, MI 48202\n\nBorn and raised in Chicago by Mexican-American parents, Nancy De Los Santos is an accomplished filmmaker and proud \u201cChicana from Chicago\u201d who has dedicated her life and career to rewriting and redefining the image of Latina\/os in the mainstream media. Among her most celebrated works are as Co-Writer and Co-Producer of The Bronze Screen: 100 Years of the Latin Image in Hollywood Cinema, with Susan Racho and Alberto Dominguez, and as Associate Producer on the feature film Selena.\n\nIn Chicana Fotos, an exhibit of evocative photographs taken in the 1970s, we meet a very different Nancy: a woman armed with a camera, capturing historic events in the struggles for social justice of the time. Nancy\u2019s photographs of Chicano Movement marches and rallies, farmworker mobilizations in Chicago and Texas, and Latina organizing in the Midwest and internationally offer a priceless documentary view of Latina\/o politics in the 1970s. Her more intimate pictures of everyday Latina\/o life capture what it was like to live through a period of radical social transformation. The exhibit includes rare photographs of UFW organizing activities in Chicago, the Texas Farmworker Pilgrimage of 1977, and the first ever International Women\u2019s Year Conference in Mexico City in 1975. These images are supplemented by never before exhibited documents from the Walter P. Reuther UFW Collection.\n\nChicana Fotos was curated by University of Michigan professor Maria Cotera (with assistance from Pau Nava) and designed by students and faculty of the UM Stamps School of Art & Design. Stamps School faculty Hannah Smotrich and Katie Rubin co-taught the collaborative, interdisciplinary Exhibition Design class with students Ian Crowley, Rachel Dawson, Emilie Farrugia, Kelsi Franzino, Andrew Han, Jack Hyland, Maggie Lemak, Megan Lewin-Smith, Katie Mongoven, Olivia Moore, Pau Nava, and Sarah Wolf.\n\nChicana Fotos is a collaboration between the El Museo del Norte, the Chicana por mi Raza Digital Archive, the Stamps School of Art & Design and the Walter P. The work explores ideas of nationality, citizenship, and identity as the artist creates his own single-citizen micro-nation. Lemercier\u2019s computer-generated print Landforms uses patterns of black dots and projected light to create the illusion of three-dimensionality and movement when seen from a distance. The effects are more realistic than a still image, but still unsettlingly artificial. Silva\u2019s Render Garden explores the digitized landscape, including remix and glitch aesthetics, through software that endlessly generates new plant combinations.\r\n\r\nThroughout the next year UMMA will present a series of exhibitions drawn from the Borusan Contemporary Art Collection in Istanbul. The Borusan\u2019s thirty-year-old collection includes significant works across a variety of genres, and since 2011 it has focused on media arts. That unbridled energy informed their earliest original material, which was honed in local clubs before eventually being captured on the band's 2011 debut album for hometown label Sub Pop.\r\n\r\nThen, something unexpected happened. That music began to reach audiences all over the United States and the rest of the world, and The Head and the Heart went from playing open mic nights to selling out headlining shows in prestigious venues. The album became one of Sub Pop's best-selling debut releases in years. And slowly but surely, ideas began to form for the band's second album, imbued with the experiences of traveling the world and cultivating a listenership with a deep connection to the music.\r\n\r\n\"There is a certain level of confidence gained from having such an amazing fan base,\" says group member Jonathan Russell. \"You start to trust yourself more. When we were busking, we were filling so much space to keep the listener from walking away. Now we are in a very different situation.\" Adds group member Josiah Johnson, \"We wanted to write songs that felt bigger, and didn\u2019t need to be so frantic. I think for the most part we wanted to record an album that sounds like the way we play now.\r\n\r\nIndeed, The Head and the Heart's new release, Let's Be Still, is a snapshot of a band that didn't exist just four short years ago. Virginia native Russell and California transplant Johnson formed the core songwriting partnership, which was rounded out by drummer Tyler Williams, keyboardist Kenny Hensley, vocalist\/violinist Charity Rose Thielen and bassist Chris Zasche, who'd met Russell and Johnson while tending bar at an open mic they frequented.
