SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Cakeasaurus: Scenes from a Picture Book

It also shows the evolution of a long-term project\, with print variations and peeks into artistic process. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Banner Moments: The National Anthem in American Life
DESCRIPTION:The new Ford Presidential Library lobby exhibit\, curated by University of Michigan musicologist Mark Clague\, illustrates through interpretive panels\, historical documents and photographs\, the cultural 200-year history of “The Star-Spangled Banner” (1814–2014). The tale that emerges demonstrates the power of music and poetry to spark the social imagination and thus create a sense of shared community.\n\nInspired by the successful defense of Baltimore\, Maryland from British attack in September 1814\, lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key penned his now famous lyric. Rather than extraordinary\, Key’s creative impulse was typical of early America’s broadside ballad tradition in which new words were written to fit well known tunes. The result\, however\, was far from everyday—Key could not have predicted that his song would survive the moment\, yet become his nation’s singular anthem.\n\nFollow the “The Star-Spangled Banner” from the moments leading up to September 14\, 1814 through the present day and explore the social history of our national song.\nMarch 2017 to September 2017 \n\nMonday - Friday. 8:45 am - 4:45 pm\nClosed all Federal holidays.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Another Country
DESCRIPTION:The scenes in Another Country emerge from daily images of conflict and uprising. Discarded shoes\, tarps and handmade signs that mark the post-industrial landscape become part roadside memorial and part doomsday prophecy. These temporary sculptures - set against the backdrop of environmental decline - evoke a cautionary tale of hazmat crews and oil soaked shorelines. \n\nIf there is a place for both apathy and active resistance in the way forward to a better future\, Another Country carries the tension that’s in-between. Inspired by the visual resistance of liberation parties\, past and present\, it urges us to remember why we fight.\n\nShanna Merola is an artist\, activist\, and documentary photographer. Working for civil rights attorneys\, she photographs first amendment activity at protests and facilitates workshops on best practices during police encounters. Over the past five years she has been a human rights observer for social justice movements across the country - from the deeply embattled struggle over water rights in Detroit and Flint\, Michigan - to the frontlines of uprisings in Ferguson\, MO and Standing Rock\, ND. Her collages and constructed landscapes are informed by these rallies - from direct actions against fracking companies to the privatization of water both globally and locally. She is currently working on a collaborative production of Know Your Rights Theatre\, inspired by the politically radical puppet troupes of the 1960’s.\n\nMerola received an MFA in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA in Photo and Film from Virginia Commonwealth University. She lives and works in Detroit\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Here and There
DESCRIPTION:\"Here and There\" looks at the problems of extreme poverty\, and includes artist Tracey Snelling's signature piece \"One Thousand Shacks.\" New works--created on campus during her three-week residency--will examine these issues in the US\, how they relate to location and\, at times\, the disenfranchisement of large groups of people for the sake of big business\, political clout\, and power. \n\nCurator's Statement:\n\nTo meet artist Tracey Snelling evokes the sensation of a strong willed breeze determined to open a backyard door. \n\nAs an artist and person\, she is down to earth\, direct\, contemporary\, and moving through it all with volition. \n\nSnelling’s artistic practice originally focused on photography as a medium\, but soon evolved to include her construction of sculptures based upon cities and towns\, strip malls and urban housing. \n\nShe refers to her three dimensional work as sculptural rather than diorama or model making because she isn’t particularly interested in the exact rendering of location\, or the contextualization of place. Instead\, she taps into the energy of community and its humanness—restless\, frenetic\, din\, a choir\, extending beyond the confines of walls. \n\nSnelling’s representations are neither judgmental nor opportunistic. They unaffectedly and objectively offer a multidimensional sketch of a place in time\, how we occupy space. \n\nHer signature piece \"One Thousand Shacks\" (included in this exhibition along with new work created during her her residency here) pushes up against the challenges of economic inequalities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence expressed through Snelling’s exuberant palette\, bold graphics\, video and neon. \n\nConceptually\, Snelling’s stacking method first creates an exalted “big picture” with a myriad of colors\, image\, text\, sound and light. The counterpoint in scale soon immerses the viewer into each small world. With this shift\, the onlooker becomes the active participant\, the occupant in situ\, adding the trappings of their own experiences to each tableau. It is this shift that forces the viewer into a new way of seeing from varying perspectives.\n\nOn the one hand\, the artist’s sculptures allude to our desire for refuge\, a private domain that allows us to be ourselves. On the other\, the overall composition reaffirms it is imperative that we co-exist with one another respectfully\, forge relationships\, understanding our marked differences. It is diversity—the unique and often disparate combination of things\, the cacophony of it all\, that activates communities and public space.\n\nSnelling’s constructions literally build a way out\, one on top of another\, charged with the undercurrent of the way we live. They emphasize our universal longing to find a place called home\, and be accepted\, built on the foundation of one and of many. \n–Amanda Krugliak\, Arts Curator\, Institute for the Humanities\n\nAbout Tracey Snelling:\nThrough the use of sculpture\, photography\, video\, and large-scale installation\, Tracey Snelling gives her impression of a place\, its people and their experience. Often\, the cinematic image stands in for real life as it plays out behind windows in the buildings\, sometimes creating a sense of mystery\, other times stressing the mundane. Snelling’s work derives from voyeurism\, film noir\, and geographical and architectural location. Within this idea of location\, themes develop that transport observation into the realm of storytelling\, with reality and sociological study being the focus. Snelling had exhibited in international galleries\, museums and institutions\, including the The Royal Museum of Fine Arts\, Belgium\; Palazzo Reale\, Milan\; Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\; Kunstmuseen Krefeld Germany\; El Museo de Arte de Banco de la Republica\, Bogota\; the Stenersen Museet\, Oslo\, and the Sundance Film Festival. Her short films have screened at the San Francisco International Film Festival\, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival\, Circuito Off in Venice\, Italy\, and the Arquiteturas Film Festival Lisboa in Portugal. She also received a 2015 Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant. Snelling lives and works in Oakland\, California and Berlin\, Germany.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chicana Fotos: Nancy De Los Santos
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: Friday\, February 17 - April 14\, 2017\nOpening Reception: Friday\, February 17\, 2017 from 4 - 7 pm\, featuring a performance by Ballet Folklórico De Detroit at 6 pm.\nGallery Talk by Nancy De Los Santos and exhibition curator Maria Cotera: Friday\, February 17\, 2017 at 12 pm\, Walter P. Reuther Library Woodcock Conference Room\nWalter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University\n5401 Cass Ave\, Detroit\, MI 48202\n\nBorn and raised in Chicago by Mexican-American parents\, Nancy De Los Santos is an accomplished filmmaker and proud “Chicana from Chicago” who has dedicated her life and career to rewriting and redefining the image of Latina/os in the mainstream media. Among her most celebrated works are as Co-Writer and Co-Producer of The Bronze Screen: 100 Years of the Latin Image in Hollywood Cinema\, with Susan Racho and Alberto Dominguez\, and as Associate Producer on the feature film Selena.\n\nIn Chicana Fotos\, an exhibit of evocative photographs taken in the 1970s\, we meet a very different Nancy: a woman armed with a camera\, capturing historic events in the struggles for social justice of the time. Nancy’s photographs of Chicano Movement marches and rallies\, farmworker mobilizations in Chicago and Texas\, and Latina organizing in the Midwest and internationally offer a priceless documentary view of Latina/o politics in the 1970s. Her more intimate pictures of everyday Latina/o life capture what it was like to live through a period of radical social transformation. The exhibit includes rare photographs of UFW organizing activities in Chicago\, the Texas Farmworker Pilgrimage of 1977\, and the first ever International Women’s Year Conference in Mexico City in 1975. These images are supplemented by never before exhibited documents from the Walter P. Reuther UFW Collection.\n\nChicana Fotos was curated by University of Michigan professor Maria Cotera (with assistance from Pau Nava) and designed by students and faculty of the UM Stamps School of Art & Design. Stamps School faculty Hannah Smotrich and Katie Rubin co-taught the collaborative\, interdisciplinary Exhibition Design class with students Ian Crowley\, Rachel Dawson\, Emilie Farrugia\, Kelsi Franzino\, Andrew Han\, Jack Hyland\, Maggie Lemak\, Megan Lewin-Smith\, Katie Mongoven\, Olivia Moore\, Pau Nava\, and Sarah Wolf.\n\nChicana Fotos is a collaboration between the El Museo del Norte\, the Chicana por mi Raza Digital Archive\, the Stamps School of Art & Design and the Walter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University.\n\nThe Walter P. Reuther Library of Labor and Urban Affairs at Wayne State University is the largest labor archive in North America. In addition to internationally significant collections on the history of the North American labor movement\, the Reuther Library holds the official records of Wayne State University\, as well as extensive records documenting urban affairs\, civic life\, civil rights\, ethnic and religious organizations\, and community development across Southeast Michigan.\n\nChicana Fotos was made possible through the generous financial support of the University of Michigan’s Third Century Initiative and the Stamps School of Art & Design. Gallery talk sponsored by the Center for Latina/o and Latin American Studies\, Wayne State University\, and the University of Michigan’s Third Century Initiative.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:FREEDOM? — THE 13TH AMENDMENT 150 YEARS LATER
DESCRIPTION:Peter Hammer is director of the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. The Keith Center is dedicated to promoting the educational\, economic\, and political empowerment of under-represented communities in urban areas and to ensuring that the phrase “equal justice under law” applies to all members of society. Hammer has become a leading voice on the economic and social issues impacting the city of Detroit.\n\nThe legacy of slavery is central to the history of African Americans. Institutions like slavery do not end—they mutate and transform themselves. The
process involves a dynamic interaction between “belief systems” and “institutions.” This transformation has moved from slavery to Jim Crow segregation to the forms of “spatial racism” that define Southeast Michigan. \n\nThis is the first of a six-lecture series. The subject is The African American Experience.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Constructing Gender
DESCRIPTION:Ask U-M students\, alumni\, or fans what symbolizes the University of Michigan\, and you’ll likely hear the Big House\, the Diag\, along with the Michigan Union and the Michigan League. Since they officially opened in 1919 and 1929\, respectively\, the Union and League have been destinations for generations of Wolverines yet few know the rich history of the buildings’ origins or about the architects who brought them both to life: brothers and U-M alums Irving K. and Allen Pond.\n\nThe exhibition\, organized in celebration of the University of Michigan’s bicentennial in 2017\, illuminates the architecture and bustling student life of these iconic buildings using original drawings\, renderings\, photographs\, color studies\, and even dance cards from the Bentley Historical Library\, which serves as the University of Michigan archives. These fascinating documents reveal how the buildings were conceived\, constructed\, and first occupied by students and alumni. Guest curated by Nancy Bartlett of the Bentley Historical Library\, the exhibition reveals how the Ponds meticulously conceived and constructed the two clubs—one for men\, one for women—by weaving ideas about gender and society into the very fabric of the buildings themselves.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ernestine Ruben at Willow Run
DESCRIPTION:In 2013\, artist Ernestine Ruben (BSDEs ’53) photographed the once-famed industrial complex Willow Run in Washtenaw County\, Michigan. Designed by her grandfather\, Detroit architect Albert Kahn\, for the Ford Motor Company\, Willow Run was an exemplar of American defense manufacturing because of its efficient mass-production of B-24 Liberators during World War II.\n\nFor this exhibition\, Ruben overlaid interior views of the now-dormant factory with imagined glimpses into her body’s interior landscape. The resulting compositions seem to breathe energy and light into the stagnant and cavernous spaces of Willow Run and suggest a longing for a productive existence undeterred by mortality for both Willow Run and the artist. Her grandfather’s role in the history of the site underscores Ruben’s personal connection.\n\nThe exhibition presents Ruben’s photographs of Willow Run in UMMA’s Photography Gallery and an original film—co-created by Ruben and video artist Seth Bernstein and featuring an original score by award-winning composer Stephen Hartke—in the Museum’s Forum.\n\nLead support for Ernestine Ruben at Willow Run: Mobilizing Memory is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the Herbert W. and Susan L. SUMMARY:Exhibition:GOIN’ NORTH: BLACK DETROIT AND THE GREAT MIGRATION\, 1910-1930
DESCRIPTION:Summary: \nExhibit of photographs and documents produced by the Michigan Historical Collections in Commemoration of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day at the University of Michigan\, published 1991.\nBLACK DETROIT AND THE GREAT MIGRATION\n\nSince Norf is up\,\nAn’ Souf is down\,\nAn’ Hebben is up\,\nI’m upward boun’.*\nThey came to Detroit by the thousands from Georgia\, Alabama\, Tennessee\, South Caroline and they stayed. They were part of what historians characterize as a watershed in African American History-the Great Migration. From 1910 to 1930\, hundreds of thousands of Blacks headed North\, leaving the South because of economic hardship\, poor educational opportunities\, and enticed by the lure of better jobs in northern industries and more freedom. Cites in the industrial Northeast and Midwest experienced astounding increases in their Black populations\, but few more so that Detroit\, its institutions and its cultures\, took shape and developed. The problems encountered by the migrants in the form of discrimination and racial animosity were problems with which the city would grapple throughout the decades to follow.\n\nThis exhibit focused on the two major concerns of the migrants\, housing and jobs\, and on the attempts made by various organizations in adjusting to life in Detroit. It is primarily compiled from the holding s of the University of Michigan’s Bentley Historical Library\, particularly the rich collection of the Detroit Urban League. It is also drawn from the Collections of the Detroit Public Library\, the Walter Reuther Collection of the Detroit Public Library\, the Walter Reuther Collection of Labor History and Urban Affairs (Wayne State University)\, the Collections of the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village\, the Detroit News\, and tge Second Baptist Church of Detroit\, Michigan. The exhibit was prepared by Christine Weideman and Karen Jania\, staff members of the Bentley Historical Library.\n\n*From the poem\, “Northboun’” by Lucy Ariel Williams\, printed in Opportunity “: a Journal of Negro Life\, June 1926. The journal was a publication of the National Urban League.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Victors for Art: Michigan's Alumni Collectors–Part I: Figuration
DESCRIPTION:Commemorating the University of Michigan’s 2017 Bicentennial\, Victors for Art: Michigan’s Alumni Collectors celebrates the deep impact of Michigan alumni in the global art world. This two-part exhibition (Part I: Figuration followed by Part II: Abstraction on view July 1– October 29) presents works collected by a diverse group of alumni that represent the breadth of the University and over seventy years of graduating classes. The works themselves are equally diverse\, ranging from ancient sculptures to contemporary multimedia works. Part I: Figuration features works by Henri Matisse\, Elizabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun\, Mark Tansey\, and Mickalene Thomas\, among others\, and allows visitors to explore the variety of artistic responses and purposes encompassed by the term “figuration”. It also offers an unprecedented opportunity to view art that may have never been publicly displayed otherwise—and most certainly\, not all together. For visitors\, and especially for future Michigan alumni\, Victors for Art illuminates the shared passion for art fostered by the Michigan experience.\n\nThis exhibition was organized by Joseph Rosa\, Guest Curator\, in collaboration with Laura De Becker\, Helmut & Candis Stern Associate Curator of African Art\, Jennifer Friess\, Assistant Curator of Photography\, Lehti Mairike Keelman\, Assistant Curator of Western Art\, and Natsu Oyobe\, Curator of Asian Art.\n\nLead support for Victors for the Arts: Michigan's Alumni Collectors is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the President\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series | Thirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower
DESCRIPTION:Professor Bush's current project\, The Floating World\, proposes a revisionist history of japonisme as not only an exoticist representation of Old Japan but also an aesthetic of self-representation informed by\, precisely\, Japanese modernization. He reframes European aesthetic uses of Japan—some familiar\, some now obscure—as part of a global response to the prospect of a non-European modernity and its consequences for “the world.” This talk will provide an overview of the book with detailed discussions of Henri Rivière’s print series Thirty-Six Views of the Eiffel Tower (1902)\, Paul-Louis Couchoud’s Sages and Poets of Asia (1916)\, and Wim Wenders’s film Tokyo-ga (1985). \n \nChristopher Bush is associate professor of French at Northwestern University\, were he co-directs Global Avant-garde and Modernist Studies and co-edits Modernism/modernity. His books include Ideographic Modernism: China\, Writing\, Media (Oxford\, 2010)\, The Floating World: Japoniste Aesthetics and Global Modernity (Columbia\, under contract) and several planned projects on the historical avant-gardes.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Collaborative Approaches to the Archaeology of Political Violence: Rethinking the Caste War of Yucatan (1847-1901)
DESCRIPTION:Conflict archaeology\, which often focuses on a particular event of violent conflict or type of conflict-related site\, would benefit from a theoretical and epistemological reorientation to the study of political violence. In this talk\, Tiffany Cain defines political violence as the intersection of violent conflict with structural violence that creates conditions where different mechanisms of violence – both overt and covert – are at work\, producing multiscalar material signatures that archaeologists would be apt to identify and unscramble. She builds on this by arguing for the interpretive value of civilian landscapes regarding past violence. These landscapes overlay violent conflict where structures of political and socioeconomic inequality and oppression have already embedded themselves. How does political violence impact civilian spaces and how can we rethink its consequences for everyday life? In this talk\, she will present the preliminary findings of a collaborative heritage program\, the Tihosuco Heritage Preservation and Community Development Project\, that explores the postconflict landscapes of Quintana Roo\, Mexico.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Analysis/Probability Learning Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The stochastic localization technique was first used by Eldan in 2012 to show that the optimal constants (with respect to the dimension) in the thin shell conjecture\, and the conjecture by Kannan\, Lovasz\, and Simonovits (KLS) are equivalent up to logarithmic factors. Since then\, it has also found other applications in convex geometry and probability. In particular\, Lee and Vempala used it to improve the best known constant in the KLS conjecture.\n\nIn this talk\, I will provide brief background on the KLS conjecture and some related conjectures. Then I will describe the stochastic localization scheme of Eldan and explain its main properties. Speaker(s): Alon Nishry (University of Michigan)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Economic Development
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nIn 2009 and 2010\, China undertook a fiscal stimulus program worth 4 trillion yuan\, roughly equivalent to 11 percent of its annual GDP. This program was largely financed by off-balance-sheet companies—known as local financing vehicles—that both borrowed and spent on behalf of local governments. These companies have continued to grow since the stimulus program concluded at the end of 2010\; their spending has accounted for roughly 10 percent of GDP each year\, with an increasing share used for what are essentially commercial projects. And their spending has likely been responsible for an increase of 5 percentage points in the aggregate investment rate and for part of the decline of 7 to 8 percentage points in the current account surplus since 2008. We argue that local governments have used their new access to financial resources to facilitate favored businesses’ access to capital\, which potentially worsens the overall efficiency of capital allocation. The long-run effect of offbalance-sheet spending by local governments may be a permanent decline in the growth rate of aggregate productivity and GDP.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:EEB Thursday Seminar: Molecular evolutionary genetics of the “two rules of speciation” in Drosophila
DESCRIPTION:Speciation involves the gradual evolution of reproductive incompatibilities— including prezygotic incompatibilities that prevent the formation of species hybrids and intrinsic postzygotic genetic incompatibilities that render hybrids sterile or inviable. Two strong “rules of speciation” implicate a special role for sex chromosomes in the evolution of postzygotic genetic incompatibilities: Haldane’s rule\, the observation that hybrids of the heterogametic (XY or ZW) sex preferentially suffer hybrid sterility and inviability\; and the large X-effect\, the observation that the X chromosome has a disproportionately large effect on hybrid sterility. Despite decades of effort\, why the X chromosome plays a special role in speciation remains unclear. I will present results from our integrated genetic and genomic studies of speciation among the three closely related species of the Drosophila simulans species complex— D. simulans\, D. sechellia\, and D. mauritiana. Our high-resolution genetic mapping studies\, speciation genomics analyses\, and molecular identification of a new hybrid sterility gene enable new inferences about the molecular and evolutionary basis of the large X-effect and its consequences for speciation.\n \nLight refreshments served at 4 p.m.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Faeth Memorial Lecture | Data-Enabled Design for Combustion Dynamics in Propulsion Engines
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will address a multi-fidelity modeling strategy to facilitate data-enabled design of combustion devices for propulsion engines. As a specific example\, the issue of combustion instability (unsteady flow motions in combustion chambers) will be discussed. An interdisciplinary research program is under way\, focused on the development of an efficient and robust capability to understand\, analyze\, and predict combustion dynamics in contemporary and future propulsion systems. This effort involves work in supercritical combustion\, combustion instability\, reduced-basis modeling (emulation)\, statistics\, uncertainty quantification\, and machine learning. Recent breakthroughs in modeling and data analytics techniques have been utilized to substantially improve the modeling capabilities at all levels. New techniques address issues specific to physics extraction and design evaluation of complex systems\, such as rocket and gas turbine engines. This research will enable effective and efficient (practical time-scale) surveys of all known parameters\, including design attributes and operating conditions\, and their effects on system stability behavior. The integrated approach described here starts with large eddy simulation (LES)-based high fidelity modeling and simulations of combustion dynamics in engines. Reduced-basis models and emulation then leverage the database established by the LES for physics-based data assimilation. Stochastic-based extraction of physics from complex flowfields provides faithful and interpretable representations of the underlying mechanisms. Feature extraction techniques are incorporated into a spatio-temporal surrogate model built on machine-learning techniques such as Gaussian process (GP) regression. Combined with statistical methodologies and control theories\, these techniques allow for an efficient survey of flow evolution and combustion dynamics\, with special attention to the identification of combustion response and gasdynamic driving mechanisms. Data-driven quantification of the transfer function between the identified mechanisms is achieved. Finally\, a system-level model is developed for effective and efficient assessment of the combustion stability behaviors of a practical system\, with complex geometry over a broad range of operating conditions.\n\nAbout our guest speaker...\n\nVigor Yang is the William R. T. Oakes Professor and Chair of the School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He has published 10 comprehensive volumes and numerous technical papers on combustion\, propulsion and energetics. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Law & Economics: A Theory of Litigation Signals
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nConventional wisdom suggests that forced information-sharing procedures\, namely\, discovery proceedings\, are the only way to rectify information asymmetries between parties to a legal dispute. This Article challenges this notion. It argues that litigants can convey information indirectly\, through a variety of vehicles we call “litigation signals.” For instance\, by committing to “disarm” themselves of important preliminary claims\, litigants convey confidence to their rival. We employ a game-theoretical model to provide a comprehensive account and typology of litigation signals and to identify conditions under which different classes of signal are actually workable. A discussion on litigation signals entails wide policy implications. First\, the Article shows how litigation signals advance settlement by facilitating information flow between litigants. Second\, it sheds new light on the heated debate over discovery proceedings. Given the availability to voluntarily transmit information\, the detrimental effects of narrow discovery are more modest than they seem to be\; and the costs of broad discovery are exaggerated. Third\, the Article reveals specific litigation tactics that can be used as informative signals\, suggesting a more nuanced judicial treatment thereof. Finally\, the Article delineates procedures that courts could adopt to help parties transmit information more effectively.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:WINTER 2017 COMMUNICATION & MEDIA SPEAKER SERIES Science\, society\, and metaphors for the Anthropocene
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will examine how metaphors interweave science and society as well as their implications for environmental sustainability. I will focus on how we may assess novel metaphors proposed in the environmental sciences\, especially in this era of dramatic global change that has been contentiously called the ‘Anthropocene.’\n\nWith regards to communication\, Dr. Larson has done pioneering work in understanding how using different metaphors and frames to discuss environmental issues may shift public perceptions of the issues. His interdisciplinary approach includes both qualitative and quantitative methods. He is an interdisciplinary scholar\, educator\, and speaker who explores how conservation-minded people are adapting to the diverse\, concurrent\, and human-caused ecological changes that Earth is experiencing. He completed an undergrad in biology at U. Guelph\, a Master’s in botany at U. Toronto\, and an interdisciplinary PhD in science and society at U. California–Santa Barbara\, and he am now an Associate Professor in the School of Environment\, Resources and Sustainability (SERS) and Associate Dean – Undergraduate Studies in the Faculty of Environment at U. Waterloo\, where he advises a team of grad students and post-docs. He have been a visiting scholar at Linköping University (Sweden) and Stellenbosch University (South Africa)\, and have given nearly 120 lectures\, including 20 keynotes and invited plenary lectures\, at conferences and workshops in fifteen countries on six continents. I have published over 65 refereed journal articles and book chapters\, often in high-impact journals including BioScience\, Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment\, Global Environmental Change\, Science\, and Trends in Ecology and Evolution. In 2011 Yale University Press published my first sole-authored book\, Metaphors for Environmental Sustainability: Redefining Our Relationship with Nature\, which was awarded the 2011 Oravec Research Award by the National Communication Association. My current research focuses on stakeholder perceptions of assisted colonization and invasive species\, and it is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and an Early Researcher Award from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation. He has served as Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies in my department\, and on the boards of World Wildlife Fund–Canada\, Ontario Nature (as President)\, and the Invasive Species Centre (as Chair). SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Algebraic Geometry
DESCRIPTION:In my work in progress on complex analytic vanishing cycles for formal schemes\, I've defined integral \"etale\" cohomology groups of a compact strictly analytic space over the field of Laurent power series with complex coefficients. These are finitely generated abelian groups provided with a quasi-unipotent action of the fundamental group of the punctured complex plane\, and they give rise to all l-adic etale cohomology groups of the space. After a short survey of this work\, I'll explain a theorem which\, in the case when the space is rig-smooth\, compares those groups and the de Rham cohomology groups of the space. The latter are provided with the Gauss-Manin connection and an additional structure which allow one to recover from them the \"etale\" cohomology groups with complex coefficients. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Relief after Hardship: The Ottoman Turkish Model for The Thousand and One Days
DESCRIPTION:The French Orientalist scholar François Pétis de la Croix\, author of the Thousand and One Days (Les Mille et un Jours\; 1710–12)\, presented his work as a translation from a Persian manuscript titled Hezār va yek ruz (A Thousand and One Days). Research has meanwhile proved beyond reasonable doubt that s allegation constitutes a wilful mystification. The direct source Pétis de la Croix exploited for the majority of tales was not Persian but rather an anonymous Ottoman Turkish manuscript titled Ferec baʿd eş-şidde (Relief after Hardship). The work\, first mentioned in Antoine Galland’s Istanbul diaries\, has been compiled before the end of the fourteenth century and undoubtedly constitutes a translation of one or several Persian works. Scholars of Persian and Ottoman studies\, such as Fritz Meier and Andreas Tietze\, have proposed a detailed discussion of the sources of Ferec baʿd eş-şidde since long\, but the detailed commentary Tietze intended to prepare on the work was never published. \nMy presentation will discuss the complicated relation between the early eighteenth-century French Mille et un Jours\, the fourteenth-century Ottoman Ferec baʿd eş-şidde\, and a genre of Persian literature that is known as Jāmeʿ al-ḥekāyāt (Compilation of Tales). Until recently\, the oldest representatives of the latter genre were known from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The recent discovery of a Jāmeʿ al-ḥekāyāt dating to the twelfth century opens up new perspectives on the relation of Pétis de la Croix’s text to the Ottoman Turkish and Persian texts.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:In Search of Wang Wei
DESCRIPTION:\"The Art Historical Art of Song China Workshop\" will kick off with Professor Richard Barnhart's lecture at the Michigan Union Pendleton Room. This international workshop is hosted by the Department of the History of Art in cooperation with the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the University of Michigan Confucius Institute. Click on the link here to see the full workshop schedule: http://china-art-song.hart.lsa.umich.edu/\n\nAbstract: \n\nWang Wei (701-761)\, one of China’s greatest poets\, left a legacy of ineffable poetry that is still read and admired around the world. He is also remembered as a great painter despite the fact that not a single painting by him is known to have survived and the reasons for his stature have not been identified. Seeking to recover what remains of Wang’s lost art\, and to separate it from the debased replicas of his Wangchuan compositions said to have been copied by Guo Zhongshu (and many others)\, and the archaic snowy landscape handscrolls supposedly copied by Yan Wengui and Xu Daoning\, we find it inextricably imbedded in the very origins and identity of Song landscape painting itself. The painter Wang Wei who emerges from this examination was the peer of Dong Yuan and Fan Kuan\, and as important as Li Cheng and Guan Tong in establishing the character of Song landscape painting.\n\nAbout the speaker:\n\nRichard M. Barnhart studied art history at Princeton University with Wen Fong and Shujiro Shimada\, and at Harvard University with Max Loehr. He spent most of his career teaching at Yale University and writing books and articles on Chinese art history. Since his retirement in 2000 he has lived with his wife Catherine on San Juan Island\, off the northwest coast\, and continues a lifelong dedication to the study of Song painting.
