The tale that emerges demonstrates the power of music and poetry to spark the social imagination and thus create a sense of shared community.\n\nInspired by the successful defense of Baltimore\, Maryland from British attack in September 1814\, lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key penned his now famous lyric. Rather than extraordinary\, Key’s creative impulse was typical of early America’s broadside ballad tradition in which new words were written to fit well known tunes. The result\, however\, was far from everyday—Key could not have predicted that his song would survive the moment\, yet become his nation’s singular anthem.\n\nFollow the “The Star-Spangled Banner” from the moments leading up to September 14\, 1814 through the present day and explore the social history of our national song.\nMarch 2017 to September 2017 \n\nMonday - Friday. 8:45 am - 4:45 pm\nClosed all Federal holidays.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Another Country
DESCRIPTION:The scenes in Another Country emerge from daily images of conflict and uprising. Discarded shoes\, tarps and handmade signs that mark the post-industrial landscape become part roadside memorial and part doomsday prophecy. These temporary sculptures - set against the backdrop of environmental decline - evoke a cautionary tale of hazmat crews and oil soaked shorelines. \n\nIf there is a place for both apathy and active resistance in the way forward to a better future\, Another Country carries the tension that’s in-between. Inspired by the visual resistance of liberation parties\, past and present\, it urges us to remember why we fight.\n\nShanna Merola is an artist\, activist\, and documentary photographer. Working for civil rights attorneys\, she photographs first amendment activity at protests and facilitates workshops on best practices during police encounters. Over the past five years she has been a human rights observer for social justice movements across the country - from the deeply embattled struggle over water rights in Detroit and Flint\, Michigan - to the frontlines of uprisings in Ferguson\, MO and Standing Rock\, ND. Her collages and constructed landscapes are informed by these rallies - from direct actions against fracking companies to the privatization of water both globally and locally. She is currently working on a collaborative production of Know Your Rights Theatre\, inspired by the politically radical puppet troupes of the 1960’s.\n\nMerola received an MFA in Photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA in Photo and Film from Virginia Commonwealth University. She lives and works in Detroit\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Here and There
DESCRIPTION:\"Here and There\" looks at the problems of extreme poverty\, and includes artist Tracey Snelling's signature piece \"One Thousand Shacks.\" New works--created on campus during her three-week residency--will examine these issues in the US\, how they relate to location and\, at times\, the disenfranchisement of large groups of people for the sake of big business\, political clout\, and power. \n\nCurator's Statement:\n\nTo meet artist Tracey Snelling evokes the sensation of a strong willed breeze determined to open a backyard door. \n\nAs an artist and person\, she is down to earth\, direct\, contemporary\, and moving through it all with volition. \n\nSnelling’s artistic practice originally focused on photography as a medium\, but soon evolved to include her construction of sculptures based upon cities and towns\, strip malls and urban housing. \n\nShe refers to her three dimensional work as sculptural rather than diorama or model making because she isn’t particularly interested in the exact rendering of location\, or the contextualization of place. Instead\, she taps into the energy of community and its humanness—restless\, frenetic\, din\, a choir\, extending beyond the confines of walls. \n\nSnelling’s representations are neither judgmental nor opportunistic. They unaffectedly and objectively offer a multidimensional sketch of a place in time\, how we occupy space. \n\nHer signature piece \"One Thousand Shacks\" (included in this exhibition along with new work created during her her residency here) pushes up against the challenges of economic inequalities\, racial biases\, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. Concurrently\, the installation embraces our everyday existence expressed through Snelling’s exuberant palette\, bold graphics\, video and neon. \n\nConceptually\, Snelling’s stacking method first creates an exalted “big picture” with a myriad of colors\, image\, text\, sound and light. The counterpoint in scale soon immerses the viewer into each small world. With this shift\, the onlooker becomes the active participant\, the occupant in situ\, adding the trappings of their own experiences to each tableau. It is this shift that forces the viewer into a new way of seeing from varying perspectives.\n\nOn the one hand\, the artist’s sculptures allude to our desire for refuge\, a private domain that allows us to be ourselves. On the other\, the overall composition reaffirms it is imperative that we co-exist with one another respectfully\, forge relationships\, understanding our marked differences. It is diversity—the unique and often disparate combination of things\, the cacophony of it all\, that activates communities and public space.\n\nSnelling’s constructions literally build a way out\, one on top of another\, charged with the undercurrent of the way we live. They emphasize our universal longing to find a place called home\, and be accepted\, built on the foundation of one and of many. \n–Amanda Krugliak\, Arts Curator\, Institute for the Humanities\n\nAbout Tracey Snelling:\nThrough the use of sculpture\, photography\, video\, and large-scale installation\, Tracey Snelling gives her impression of a place\, its people and their experience. Often\, the cinematic image stands in for real life as it plays out behind windows in the buildings\, sometimes creating a sense of mystery\, other times stressing the mundane. Snelling’s work derives from voyeurism\, film noir\, and geographical and architectural location. Within this idea of location\, themes develop that transport observation into the realm of storytelling\, with reality and sociological study being the focus. Snelling had exhibited in international galleries\, museums and institutions\, including the The Royal Museum of Fine Arts\, Belgium\; Palazzo Reale\, Milan\; Museum of Arts and Design\, New York\; Kunstmuseen Krefeld Germany\; El Museo de Arte de Banco de la Republica\, Bogota\; the Stenersen Museet\, Oslo\, and the Sundance Film Festival. Her short films have screened at the San Francisco International Film Festival\, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival\, Circuito Off in Venice\, Italy\, and the Arquiteturas Film Festival Lisboa in Portugal. She also received a 2015 Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant. Snelling lives and works in Oakland\, California and Berlin\, Germany.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Chicana Fotos: Nancy De Los Santos
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Dates: Friday\, February 17 - April 14\, 2017\nOpening Reception: Friday\, February 17\, 2017 from 4 - 7 pm\, featuring a performance by Ballet Folklórico De Detroit at 6 pm.\nGallery Talk by Nancy De Los Santos and exhibition curator Maria Cotera: Friday\, February 17\, 2017 at 12 pm\, Walter P. Reuther Library Woodcock Conference Room\nWalter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University\n5401 Cass Ave\, Detroit\, MI 48202\n\nBorn and raised in Chicago by Mexican-American parents\, Nancy De Los Santos is an accomplished filmmaker and proud “Chicana from Chicago” who has dedicated her life and career to rewriting and redefining the image of Latina/os in the mainstream media. Among her most celebrated works are as Co-Writer and Co-Producer of The Bronze Screen: 100 Years of the Latin Image in Hollywood Cinema\, with Susan Racho and Alberto Dominguez\, and as Associate Producer on the feature film Selena.\n\nIn Chicana Fotos\, an exhibit of evocative photographs taken in the 1970s\, we meet a very different Nancy: a woman armed with a camera\, capturing historic events in the struggles for social justice of the time. Nancy’s photographs of Chicano Movement marches and rallies\, farmworker mobilizations in Chicago and Texas\, and Latina organizing in the Midwest and internationally offer a priceless documentary view of Latina/o politics in the 1970s. Her more intimate pictures of everyday Latina/o life capture what it was like to live through a period of radical social transformation. The exhibit includes rare photographs of UFW organizing activities in Chicago\, the Texas Farmworker Pilgrimage of 1977\, and the first ever International Women’s Year Conference in Mexico City in 1975. These images are supplemented by never before exhibited documents from the Walter P. Reuther UFW Collection.\n\nChicana Fotos was curated by University of Michigan professor Maria Cotera (with assistance from Pau Nava) and designed by students and faculty of the UM Stamps School of Art & Design. Stamps School faculty Hannah Smotrich and Katie Rubin co-taught the collaborative\, interdisciplinary Exhibition Design class with students Ian Crowley\, Rachel Dawson\, Emilie Farrugia\, Kelsi Franzino\, Andrew Han\, Jack Hyland\, Maggie Lemak\, Megan Lewin-Smith\, Katie Mongoven\, Olivia Moore\, Pau Nava\, and Sarah Wolf.\n\nChicana Fotos is a collaboration between the El Museo del Norte\, the Chicana por mi Raza Digital Archive\, the Stamps School of Art & Design and the Walter P. Reuther Library at Wayne State University.\n\nThe Walter P. Reuther Library of Labor and Urban Affairs at Wayne State University is the largest labor archive in North America. In addition to internationally significant collections on the history of the North American labor movement\, the Reuther Library holds the official records of Wayne State University\, as well as extensive records documenting urban affairs\, civic life\, civil rights\, ethnic and religious organizations\, and community development across Southeast Michigan.\n\nChicana Fotos was made possible through the generous financial support of the University of Michigan’s Third Century Initiative and the Stamps School of Art & Design. Gallery talk sponsored by the Center for Latina/o and Latin American Studies\, Wayne State University\, and the University of Michigan’s Third Century Initiative.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Constructing Gender
DESCRIPTION:Ask U-M students\, alumni\, or fans what symbolizes the University of Michigan\, and you’ll likely hear the Big House\, the Diag\, along with the Michigan Union and the Michigan League. Since they officially opened in 1919 and 1929\, respectively\, the Union and League have been destinations for generations of Wolverines yet few know the rich history of the buildings’ origins or about the architects who brought them both to life: brothers and U-M alums Irving K. and Allen Pond.\n\nThe exhibition\, organized in celebration of the University of Michigan’s bicentennial in 2017\, illuminates the architecture and bustling student life of these iconic buildings using original drawings\, renderings\, photographs\, color studies\, and even dance cards from the Bentley Historical Library\, which serves as the University of Michigan archives. These fascinating documents reveal how the buildings were conceived\, constructed\, and first occupied by students and alumni. Guest curated by Nancy Bartlett of the Bentley Historical Library\, the exhibition reveals how the Ponds meticulously conceived and constructed the two clubs—one for men\, one for women—by weaving ideas about gender and society into the very fabric of the buildings themselves.\n\nLead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ernestine Ruben at Willow Run
DESCRIPTION:In 2013\, artist Ernestine Ruben (BSDEs ’53) photographed the once-famed industrial complex Willow Run in Washtenaw County\, Michigan. Designed by her grandfather\, Detroit architect Albert Kahn\, for the Ford Motor Company\, Willow Run was an exemplar of American defense manufacturing because of its efficient mass-production of B-24 Liberators during World War II.\n\nFor this exhibition\, Ruben overlaid interior views of the now-dormant factory with imagined glimpses into her body’s interior landscape. The resulting compositions seem to breathe energy and light into the stagnant and cavernous spaces of Willow Run and suggest a longing for a productive existence undeterred by mortality for both Willow Run and the artist. Her grandfather’s role in the history of the site underscores Ruben’s personal connection.\n\nThe exhibition presents Ruben’s photographs of Willow Run in UMMA’s Photography Gallery and an original film—co-created by Ruben and video artist Seth Bernstein and featuring an original score by award-winning composer Stephen Hartke—in the Museum’s Forum.\n\nLead support for Ernestine Ruben at Willow Run: Mobilizing Memory is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.\n\n\n\nLead support for Victors for the Arts: Michigan's Alumni Collectors is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the President\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Fragments Workshop. Interacting with Text in Early Imperial China and Beyond.
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will feature commentators Varuni Bhatia (Asian Languages & Cultures) and Roger Bagnall (ISAW). \n\nArchaeological finds in China during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have added unprecedented depth and detail to our understanding of premodern Chinese history. This paper synthesizes recovered manuscript materials from Gansu and Inner Mongolia to argue that the soldiers in the northwest border area during the Han dynasty constituted a literate community of commoners linked to the broader textual culture of the empire. I bring in a new interpretive framework\, incorporate new sources\, and reconsider previously known materials to challenge common assumptions about textual culture in early China. The implications of my study undermine received understandings of power in early society. Where scholars have often viewed text and the power associated with it as the exclusive province of elites\, I demonstrate that these capabilities existed throughout society.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:GOIN’ NORTH: BLACK DETROIT AND THE GREAT MIGRATION\, 1910-1930
DESCRIPTION:Summary: \nExhibit of photographs and documents produced by the Michigan Historical Collections in Commemoration of Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day at the University of Michigan\, published 1991.\nBLACK DETROIT AND THE GREAT MIGRATION\n\nSince Norf is up\,\nAn’ Souf is down\,\nAn’ Hebben is up\,\nI’m upward boun’.*\nThey came to Detroit by the thousands from Georgia\, Alabama\, Tennessee\, South Caroline and they stayed. They were part of what historians characterize as a watershed in African American History-the Great Migration. From 1910 to 1930\, hundreds of thousands of Blacks headed North\, leaving the South because of economic hardship\, poor educational opportunities\, and enticed by the lure of better jobs in northern industries and more freedom. Cites in the industrial Northeast and Midwest experienced astounding increases in their Black populations\, but few more so that Detroit\, its institutions and its cultures\, took shape and developed. The problems encountered by the migrants in the form of discrimination and racial animosity were problems with which the city would grapple throughout the decades to follow.\n\nThis exhibit focused on the two major concerns of the migrants\, housing and jobs\, and on the attempts made by various organizations in adjusting to life in Detroit. It is primarily compiled from the holding s of the University of Michigan’s Bentley Historical Library\, particularly the rich collection of the Detroit Urban League. It is also drawn from the Collections of the Detroit Public Library\, the Walter Reuther Collection of the Detroit Public Library\, the Walter Reuther Collection of Labor History and Urban Affairs (Wayne State University)\, the Collections of the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village\, the Detroit News\, and tge Second Baptist Church of Detroit\, Michigan. The exhibit was prepared by Christine Weideman and Karen Jania\, staff members of the Bentley Historical Library.\n\n*From the poem\, “Northboun’” by Lucy Ariel Williams\, printed in Opportunity “: a Journal of Negro Life\, June 1926. The journal was a publication of the National Urban League.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Victors for Art: Michigan's Alumni Collectors–Part I: Figuration
DESCRIPTION:Commemorating the University of Michigan’s 2017 Bicentennial\, Victors for Art: Michigan’s Alumni Collectors celebrates the deep impact of Michigan alumni in the global art world. This two-part exhibition (Part I: Figuration followed by Part II: Abstraction on view July 1– October 29) presents works collected by a diverse group of alumni that represent the breadth of the University and over seventy years of graduating classes. The works themselves are equally diverse\, ranging from ancient sculptures to contemporary multimedia works. Part I: Figuration features works by Henri Matisse\, Elizabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun\, Mark Tansey\, and Mickalene Thomas\, among others\, and allows visitors to explore the variety of artistic responses and purposes encompassed by the term “figuration”. It also offers an unprecedented opportunity to view art that may have never been publicly displayed otherwise—and most certainly\, not all together. For visitors\, and especially for future Michigan alumni\, Victors for Art illuminates the shared passion for art fostered by the Michigan experience.\n\nThis exhibition was organized by Joseph Rosa\, Guest Curator\, in collaboration with Laura De Becker\, Helmut & Candis Stern Associate Curator of African Art\, Jennifer Friess\, Assistant Curator of Photography\, Lehti Mairike Keelman\, Assistant Curator of Western Art\, and Natsu Oyobe\, Curator of Asian Art.\n\nLead support for Victors for the Arts: Michigan's Alumni Collectors is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the President\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts\, and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Error Correction in Foreign Language Classrooms: Journey to Ithaca
DESCRIPTION:Correcting grammar errors in speaking or writing is thought to be part of every language teacher’s job\, a professional duty that many teachers excel in and that most language students expect. There are however many complexities that teachers wonder about\, encompassing affective concerns (will it demotivate some of my students?)\, time management (how can it become less time consuming?)\, doubts about effectiveness (how do I know that it is making a difference in my students’ accuracy?)\, proficiency differences (should I correct errors in the same ways regardless of my students’ language level?)\, and educational goals and philosophies of teaching (how should I reconcile correcting for accuracy with teaching for communication? how do I manage language accuracy efforts like error correction in the context of teaching other important dimensions of a foreign language\, like culture\, literature\, or writing?). Professor Ortega will examine these complexities and propose tentative best practices regarding why\, whether\, how\, when\, and what to correct in foreign language students’ errors. Her goal is to do so through insights gleaned from a balanced examination of research findings and the realities of foreign language education in practice. In the end\, she will argue that much is to be gained if language teachers rethink their error correction as the kind of journey to Ithaca Greek-Alexandrian poet Kavafis proposed: An opportunity for lasting engagement in professional self-discovery\, rather than a point of final destination.\n\nLourdes Ortega is Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Georgetown University. Her main area of research is in second language acquisition\, particularly sociocognitive and educational dimensions in adult classroom settings. Before moving to the USA in 1993\, she was a teacher of Spanish as a foreign language at the Cervantes Institute in Athens and she has also taught English as a second language in Hawaii and Georgia. Lourdes was co-recipient of the Pimsleur and the TESOL Research awards (2001) and has been a doctoral Mellon fellow (1999)\, a postdoctoral Spencer/National Academy of Education fellow (2003)\, and a senior research fellow at the Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies (2010). She was Journal Editor of Language Learning (2010-2015) and is a member of the Board of Directors of the University of Michigan’s Language Learning Research Club (2016-2020). She has published widely in journals such as Annual Review of Applied Linguistics\, Applied Linguistics\, Journal of Second Language Writing\, Language Learning\, Modern Language Journal\, Studies in Second Language Acquisition\, and System. Her books include Understanding Second Language Acquisition (2009\, translated into Mandarin in 2016)\, and co-edited collections on Technology-mediated TBLT (with Marta González-Lloret\, John Benjamins\, 2014) and The Usage-based Study of Language Learning and Multilingualism (with Ande Tyler and colleagues\, Georgetown University Press\, 2016). She is currently busy co-editing (with Annick De Houwer) The Handbook of Bilingualism for Cambridge University Press.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Labor Economics: Valuing Alternative Work Arrangements
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nWe use a field experiment to study how workers value alternative work arrangements. During the application process to staff a national call center we randomly offered applicants choices between traditional M-F 9 am – 5 pm office positions and alternatives. These alternatives include flexible scheduling\, working from home\, and positions that give the employer discretion over scheduling. We randomly varied the wage difference between the traditional option and the alternative\, allowing us to estimate the entire distribution of willingness to pay (WTP) for these alternatives. We validate our results using a nationally-representative survey. The great majority of workers are not willing to pay for flexible scheduling relative to a traditional schedule: either the ability to choose the days and times of work or the number of hours they work. However\, the average worker is willing to give up 20% of wages to avoid a schedule set by an employer on a week’s notice. This largely represents workers’ aversion to evening and weekend work\, not scheduling unpredictability. Traditional M-F 9 am – 5 pm schedules are preferred by most jobseekers. Despite the fact that the average worker isn’t willing to pay for scheduling flexibility\, a tail of workers with high WTP allows for sizable compensating differentials. Of the worker-friendly options we test\, workers are willing to pay the most (8% of wages) for the option of working from home. Women\, particularly those with young children\, have higher WTP for work from home and to avoid employer scheduling discretion. They are slightly more likely to be in jobs with these amenities\, but the differences are not large enough to explain any wage gaps.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:SAC Speaker Series Presents NYU Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis Andrew Ross
DESCRIPTION:Recent writing about “creative labor” has helped us to understand how “working for exposure” has become a central economic principle of the media and knowledge industries. But this focus on the attention economy has neglected how the “groundstaff” are employed to construct and maintain our brand-name institutions. How can arts and media activists turn such institutions into communities of conscience where the rights of all workers are upheld?

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Special Events
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: \nOver the last few years\, machine learning approaches to natural language processing have made significant strides in numerous applications\, including: automatic summarization\, sentiment detection\, personalized news feed generation\, natural language user interfaces\, and more. Among these various applications\, there is a unifying theme -- reliance on a broad mathematical foundation\, with special emphasis on linear algebra\, probability\, and statistics.\n\nIn this talk\, I'll introduce the fundamentals of machine learning and delve into some of the natural language problems listed above\, with the goal of sketching solutions using only techniques that I introduce\, motivate\, demonstrate\, and rigorously justify during the talk.\n\nWhile the talk is targeted at a mathematically sophisticated audience familiar with standard concepts from linear algebra and probability theory\, no prior exposure to machine learning or natural language processing is required or expected.\n\nBio:\nDavid Montague is part of the Quantitative Execution and Development team at Palantir\, where he works on a variety of mathematical modeling problems across Palantir and its customers. Some of the domains in which he has worked include health insurance\, local law enforcement\, media\, oil & gas\, and pharmaceutical research. David holds a PhD in mathematics from Stanford University\, where he studied covariance estimation and graphical models for infinite collections of random variables. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Applied Interdisciplinary Mathematics
DESCRIPTION:Electrostatic interactions are fundamental in colloidal and biological systems. Continuum models\, such as the classical Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) theory\, are efficient descriptions of such interactions. It is known\, however\, such a theory is unable to capture many important properties\, such as the ionic size effect and charge-charge correlation. In this talk\, I will first report some recent progress in developing mathematically PB-like continuum theories that account for additional electrostatic properties. I will then present a variational implicit-solvent model for biological molecules (such as proteins) in which the electrostatics is described through the dielectric boundary that separates a biomolecule from the surrounding solvent (i.e.\, water). I will show how the dielectric boundary force can be obtained as the shape derivative of the electrostatic free energy\, and prove that such force can lead to an interfacial instability that has been observed in experiment and molecular dynamics simulations. DESCRIPTION:Option pricing models typically consider either monopolistic market makers\, or infinite competition. Real markets\, however\, are often dominated by a few large dealers with substantial market power. We study a Stackelberg competition between a finite number of option dealers and a client who wants to sell part of her option position. The dealers quote pricing schedules\, based on which the client decides how many options to sell to the dealers.\n\n(Joint work with Bruno Bouchard and Johannes Muhle-Karbe) Speaker(s): Martin Herdegen (Warwick)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Seminar | Dark Matter and Light Forces: Precisely Predicting Indirect Signals
DESCRIPTION:Heavy dark matter coupled to much lighter force carriers exhibits a range of interesting behaviors that are not well-characterized by the usual perturbative Feynman diagram expansion\, including long-range interactions\, annihilation rates modified by both large velocity-dependent enhancements and large logarithms\, and the presence of bound states. There has been great interest in recent years in dark sectors containing both dark matter and much lighter particles\; as the LHC continues to constrain low-scale supersymmetry\, even classic weakly interacting dark matter candidates may need to be heavy relative to the weak gauge bosons. I will describe recent work to characterize the novel properties of heavy dark matter coupled to light force carriers\, in two principal directions: (1) the precision calculation of heavy wino dark matter annihilation to line photons using effective field theory\, now to NLL’ order\, and (2) the properties of dark-sector bound states where multiple force carriers and several states in a dark matter multiplet may be involved\, using the wino as an example. I will discuss the importance of these results for indirect detection experiments searching for the products of dark matter annihilation.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Combinatorics
DESCRIPTION:Kronecker coefficients are tensor product multiplicities for the irreducible representations of the symmetric group. Recently\, Stembridge generalized a stabilization phenomenon occurring among the Kronecker coefficients which was first discovered by Murnaghan in the 1930's. While doing so\, Stembridge demonstrated that this generalized stability will occur when an associated polytope is 0-dimensional. In this talk\, I will show how to classify when this polytope is 0-dimensional using a modified version of the puzzles and honeycombs of Knutson and Tao. Speaker(s): Stefan Froelich (U. of Michigan)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Biophysics Seminar: Professor Nicolas Fawzi\, Brown University\, Assistant Professor of Molecular Pharmacology\, Physiology and Biotechnology
DESCRIPTION:Phase separation of RNA-binding proteins via multivalent interactions between aromatic/polar-rich disordered domains contributes to the formation of functional cytoplasmic granules and nuclear puncta\, which have been shown to behave as liquids -- flowing\, fusing\, and returning to spherical shape -- within live cells. These domains have also been identified as the nucleators of cytoplasmic inclusions associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). We use atomic resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy approaches to visualize low complexity domain structure and interactions along the pathway from monomer\, to liquid-liquid phase separated state\, to static aggregates and hydrogels. We show that the low complexity domains of RNA-binding protein Fused in Sarcoma (FUS LC\, associated with ALS and FTD) and hnRNP A2 (associated with ALS and IBM) remain disordered even within liquid phase separated puncta (Burke et al. Molecular Cell\, 2015). FUS LC also recruits unphosphorylated RNA-polymerase II C-terminal domain into the liquid phase separated state\, adding a potential explanation for FUS LC transcriptional activation in cancer. Importantly\, phase separation is reversible and is modulated by interaction with RNA\, distinguishing these assemblies from static inclusions that can arise from missense mutations in the LC regions. In contrast\, we show that liquid-liquid phase separation of TDP-43 is mediated in part by structured α-helical assembly and extension (Conicella et al. Structure\, 2016). Some ALS-associated mutations disrupt helix-helix interaction inhibiting liquid-liquid phase separation while leading to enhanced aggregation. Our current work aims to evaluate the potential of post translational modification to alter assembly and hence disrupt pathological interactions of these disordered domains.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Success in Multilingual Learning: Continued\, Probabilistic\, and Beyond Language
DESCRIPTION:How successful are adults in their learning of new languages? Traditionally\, the field of second language acquisition has answered this question rather pessimistically\, comparing multilingual success directly to monolingual success. Professor Ortega leverages research insights from developmental bilingualism and the study of critical applied linguistics and language ideologies and proposes that multilinguals’ success must be thought of as a probabilistic continuum along both early and late bilingualism that goes beyond strictly linguistic notions of competence. \n\nLourdes Ortega is Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Georgetown University.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Exhibition Opening\, \"Persistent Pasts: The Bicentennial Campus as Archive\"
DESCRIPTION:Presentation in the Art & Architecture Auditorium will be followed by an opening reception in the college gallery. \n\nCombining historical research and analysis from the students in Sarah Rovang’s “The Curated Campus” graduate seminar and the design output of Steven Mankouche’s “What If” Options Studio\, Persistent Pasts reflects on the University of Michigan’s campus as a repository of memory. As UM celebrates its Bicentennial year\, this exhibition asks how past traditions\, tensions\, and technologies have left material or cultural traces on campus space today. By laying bare rarely examined aspects of the historical university alongside radical designs for an unrealized present\, Persistent Pasts asks us to question entrenched conceptions of what UM should and could be\, architecturally and institutionally. This exhibition is supported in part by a Bicentennial Activity Grant\, co-authored by Claire Zimmerman and Sarah Rovang. \n\nStudent Presenters:\nTyler Schaafsma \nVaishnavi Magar\nRebecca Lesher & Nour Majzoub\nIbiayi Briggs & Jordan Laurila\n\nThis exhibition will be on view in the Taubman College Gallery through May 19. The college gallery is open Monday - Friday\, 9am - 5pm.

SUMMARY:Performance:Shawn Mullins
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins has had major adult alternative radio hits with \"Lullaby and \"Beautiful Wreck\,\" and he writes introspective original songs in an Americana framework that sound great either solo or with a band. He's been called Jewel with a Y chromsome\, and he's looking like he's going to match her career staying power. Shawn's music is overflowing with perfect rhymes\, telling detail and underlying glimpses of truth. This is uncommonly literate stuff\, striking in its insightfulness and compassion\, all delivered in a companionable baritone. Shawn comes to Michigan with a new album\, \"My Stupid Heart\,\" that covers—you guessed it—the singer-songwriter's recent breakup. \"This record came out of all that\; all the feelings\, all the heartache\,\" Shawn explains. His loss is audiences' gain!
