Each year we send down University of Michigan tutors to Ecuador to help run a summer camp for over 60 students from ages 4 to 13 years old.\u00a0\nWe are trying to collect school supplies In order to allow our tutors to continue creating fun and engaging lesson plans and to give our students the best experience possible.\n\nWe are looking for any gently used school supplies that may be left over from the school year and new supplies as well. This picture book exhibit follows the confectionary exploits of Cakeasaurus, one cake-deprived town, and one little boy about to turn five. It also shows the evolution of a long-term project, with print variations and peeks into artistic process. times, the disenfranchisement of large groups of people for the sake of big business, political clout, and power. \r\n\r\nCurator's Statement:\r\n\r\nTo meet artist Tracey Snelling evokes the sensation of a strong willed breeze determined to open a backyard door. \r\n\r\nAs an artist and person, she is down to earth, direct, contemporary, and moving through it all with volition. \r\n\r\nSnelling\u2019s artistic practice originally focused on photography as a medium, but soon evolved to include her construction of sculptures based upon cities and towns, strip malls and urban housing. \r\n\r\nShe refers to her three dimensional work as sculptural rather than diorama or model making because she isn\u2019t particularly interested in the exact rendering of location, or the contextualization of place. Instead, she taps into the energy of community and its humanness\u2014restless, frenetic, din, a choir, extending beyond the confines of walls. \r\n\r\nSnelling\u2019s representations are neither judgmental nor opportunistic. They unaffectedly and objectively offer a multidimensional sketch of a place in time, how we occupy space. \r\n\r\nHer signature piece \"One Thousand Shacks\" (included in this exhibition along with new work created during her her residency here) pushes up against the challenges of economic inequalities, racial biases, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people. Concurrently, the installation embraces our everyday existence expressed through Snelling\u2019s exuberant palette, bold graphics, video and neon. \r\n\r\nConceptually, Snelling\u2019s stacking method first creates an exalted \u201cbig picture\u201d with a myriad of colors, image, text, sound and light. The counterpoint in scale soon immerses the viewer into each small world. With this shift, the onlooker becomes the active participant, the occupant in situ, adding the trappings of their own experiences to each tableau. It is this shift that forces the viewer into a new way of seeing from varying perspectives.\r\n\r\nOn the one hand, the artist\u2019s sculptures allude to our desire for refuge, a private domain that allows us to be ourselves. On the other, the overall composition reaffirms it is imperative that we co-exist with one another respectfully, forge relationships, understanding our marked differences. It is diversity\u2014the unique and often disparate combination of things, the cacophony of it all, that activates communities and public space.\r\n\r\nSnelling\u2019s constructions literally build a way out, one on top of another, charged with the undercurrent of the way we live. They emphasize our universal longing to find a place called home, and be accepted, built on the foundation of one and of many. \r\n\u2013Amanda Krugliak, Arts Curator, Institute for the Humanities\r\n\r\nAbout Tracey Snelling:\r\nThrough the use of sculpture, photography, video, and large-scale installation, Tracey Snelling gives her impression of a place, its people and their experience. Often, the cinematic image stands in for real life as it plays out behind windows in the buildings, sometimes creating a sense of mystery, other times stressing the mundane. Snelling\u2019s work derives from voyeurism, film noir, and geographical and architectural location. Within this idea of location, themes develop that transport observation into the realm of storytelling, with reality and sociological study being the focus. Snelling had exhibited in international galleries, museums and institutions, including the The Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Belgium; Palazzo Reale, Milan; Museum of Arts and Design, New York; Kunstmuseen Krefeld Germany; El Museo de Arte de Banco de la Republica, Bogota; the Stenersen Museet, Oslo, and the Sundance Film Festival. Her short films have screened at the San Francisco International Film Festival, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Circuito Off in Venice, Italy, and the Arquiteturas Film Festival Lisboa in Portugal. They were part of what historians characterize as a watershed in African American History-the Great Migration. From 1910 to 1930, hundreds of thousands of Blacks headed North, leaving the South because of economic hardship, poor educational opportunities, and enticed by the lure of better jobs in northern industries and more freedom. Cites in the industrial Northeast and Midwest experienced astounding increases in their Black populations, but few more so that Detroit, its institutions and its cultures, took shape and developed. The problems encountered by the migrants in the form of discrimination and racial animosity were problems with which the city would grapple throughout the decades to follow.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit focused on the two major concerns of the migrants, housing and jobs, and on the attempts made by various organizations in adjusting to life in Detroit. It is primarily compiled from the holding s of the University of Michigan\u2019s Bentley Historical Library, particularly the rich collection of the Detroit Urban League. It is also drawn from the Collections of the Detroit Public Library, the Walter Reuther Collection of the Detroit Public Library, the Walter Reuther Collection of Labor History and Urban Affairs (Wayne State University), the Collections of the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, the Detroit News, and tge Second Baptist Church of Detroit, Michigan. The software controlling the pistons is based on fluid dynamics, so as more visitors approach the grid, the chairs\u2014whose iconic curving contours were also generated mathematically\u2014 mimic the complex interaction of multiple waves in water.\r\n\r\nThis performative installation complements the concurrent exhibition Moving Image: Performance, which together constitute the second of three presentations at UMMA drawn from the collection of Borusan Contemporary, Istanbul. Instead of making proteins, these megaenzymes produce a vast variety of small molecules with important and diverse biological activity. For example, NRPSs synthesize antifungals, antibacterials, antivirals, antitumours, siderophores, immunosuppressants, industrial agents and green chemicals. The impact of NRPS products on human health has been revolutionary: Penicillin, cyclosporin, cephalosporin and daptomycin have saved tens of millions of lives worldwide. NRPSs are true macromolecular machines, huge proteins with multiple active sites, moving parts and a coordinated synthetic process. They consist of a series of multidomain modules of ~1100 residues, with each module responsible for adding one specific amino acid to the growing peptide molecule, in assembly line fashion. \r\n\r\nWe have been studying linear gramicidin synthetase and bacillibactin synthetase to gain structural and functional insight into NRPSs. The initiation module of an antibiotic-producing NRPS, linear gramicidin synthetase includes the specialized tailoring formylation domain, and we capture states that represent every major step of the assembly-line synthesis in the initiation module. The structures show how the formylation domain is incorporated into the NRPS architecture and how it has evolved to act in concert with the other domains in the synthetic cycle. The transitions between the sequential conformations in the cycle are very large, with both the peptidyl carrier protein and the adenylation subdomain undergoing huge movements to transport substrate between distal active sites. The structures highlight the great versatility of NRPSs, as small domains repurpose and recycle their limited interfaces to interact with their various binding partners. In addition, X-ray crystallography of a cross-module construct of bacillibactin synthetase, and low resolution negative stain electron microscopy of dimodular bacillibactin synthetase indicate that intra-module mobility is even greater than that seen within a module and suggest that NRPSs lack a uniform, rigid supermodular architecture.\r\n\r\nAbout the Speaker:\r\nMartin Schmeing received his B.Sc. from McGill University (1998), before obtaining his M.Sc. and Ph.D. with Dr. Thomas Steitz at Yale University (2002, 2004). He then carried out postdoctoral research with Dr. V. Ramakrishnan at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK (2006-2010). He was appointed Assistant Professor at the Department of Biochemistry, McGill University in 2010, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016. He holds a Canadian Research Chair in Macromolecular Machines and serves as the Associate Director of the Centre for Structural Biology. The main focus of his research is on elucidating the structures and functions of nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs). NRPSs are large microbial enzymes that synthesize their products through amide bond formation between building block monomers (most commonly amino acids). The chemical and biological properties of these compounds often make them useful to society as therapeutics (antibiotics, antivirals, anti-tumours, and immunosuppressants) and as natural green chemicals (emulsifiers, siderophores, and research tools).
