She has always been interested in creating art\, and started working with clay three years ago in Ann Arbor. Stowers has made different clay pieces\, but houses and buildings are her favorites. Stower’s pieces demonstrate her unique style and great attention to detail.

DESCRIPTION:For this exhibition\, the Aussome Study Group (ASG) picked some of their current favorite artists – MaryAnn Beckwith\, Peter Max\, Louis Tiffany\, Dr. Seuss\, Ugo Nespolo\, Rick Loudermilk and George Rodrigue – and created art based on their work. This exhibit also contains images and information about each of the inspiration artists. The work of ASG award winning artists\, Mary Andrews\, Lois Ann Fulton\, Robbie Payne and Carol Tamasiunas\, has appeared in Quilting Arts and Fiberarts magazines and the book\, The Natural World\, and they have exhibited their work locally\, nationally and internationally.

DESCRIPTION:Boisali Biswas is a studio artist working in mixed media fibers\, currently residing in West Bloomfield\, Michigan. She is originally from India\, and her formative years were spent at Visva-Bharti International University\, founded by the Nobel Laureate\, Rabindranath Tagore. She has an attunement with nature and a deep rooted attachment to the traditional art forms of her culture rich homeland. Living in this country for over two decades and incorporating styles\, techniques\, and inspirations of western culture into her Indian background has made her art into a cauldron of multicultural assemblages.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents His Eye Is on the Sparrow: Watercolor
DESCRIPTION:Combining a passion for painting and a love of nature\, Catherine McClung has shown her work in the Ann Arbor Art Fair since 1980. In both Michigan and Florida\, she walks every day observing and photographing birds to use as a reference for her watercolor paintings. Over a two-year period\, she created paintings of all of the 33 birds mentioned in the Bible. McClung also created china patterns for Lenox tableware. In 2002\, the Michigan Governor’s office asked her to represent the state by designing an ornament for the White House Christmas tree.

DESCRIPTION:Zengquan Xu is a retired electrical engineer who worked professionally in the local automotive industry. Since his teens\, photography has been his lifetime hobby. He has a great love for travel photography and landscapes\, especially subjects that are culturally related. Using both film and digital photography\, Xu prints his work on paper and canvas. Supporting materials for this exhibit will be in both English and Chinese\, and it is in partnership with the U-M Confucius Institute.

Originally from Michigan\, where she earned her BFA at the College for Creative Studies\, she has recently returned from a 3-year adventure living in the countryside of England. Simpli Jessi dolls are handmade with great care and attention to detail. Natural linens\, organic cotton stuffing\, felt\, yarn\, and reclaimed fabrics are used in every doll\, making each one unique and special.

DESCRIPTION:The drawings and sculpture of Flushing\, Michigan artist Thom Bohnert range from lyrical to poetic\, playing with tension and balance in a kind of whimsical theatrical arena. His drawings show a complex layering\, allowing viewers to imagine a storytelling encounter of spaces. His ceramics and sculptures are compositions often combining wire armature and wet looking clay fragments with colorful multi-glazed surfaces. He is the recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship\, among others\, and museum collections include Minneapolis Art Institute and Detroit Institute of the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:The new Ford Presidential Library lobby exhibit\, curated by University of Michigan musicologist Mark Clague\, illustrates through interpretive panels\, historical documents and photographs\, the cultural 200-year history of “The Star-Spangled Banner” (1814–2014). The tale that emerges demonstrates the power of music and poetry to spark the social imagination and thus create a sense of shared community.\n\nInspired by the successful defense of Baltimore\, Maryland from British attack in September 1814\, lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key penned his now famous lyric. Rather than extraordinary\, Key’s creative impulse was typical of early America’s broadside ballad tradition in which new words were written to fit well known tunes. The result\, however\, was far from everyday—Key could not have predicted that his song would survive the moment\, yet become his nation’s singular anthem.\n\nFollow the “The Star-Spangled Banner” from the moments leading up to September 14\, 1814 through the present day and explore the social history of our national song.\nMarch 2017 to September 2017 \n\nMonday - Friday. 8:45 am - 4:45 pm\nClosed all Federal holidays.

DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections.  Titled Cosmogonic Tattoos\, his project will use adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. DESCRIPTION:William K. Merkel Ph.D.\, J.D. and Lynn L. Janulis Ph.D.\, J.D.\, patent attorneys from Marshall\, Gerstein and Borun\, LLP\, will discuss options to effectively secure intellectual property associated with academic drug discovery and diagnostics projects. Topics such as what is currently patentable under US and international patent law with a focus on therapeutics (small molecules\, biologicals\, natural products\, clinical diagnostics and research tools) will be discussed. Please come ready to learn and ask questions.\n\nHosted by U-M Center for the Discovery of New Medicines (CDNM) and U-M Office of Tech Transfer (OTT) and moderated by Ed Pagani\, OTT Associate Director\, University of Michigan.\n\nLynn Janulis\, Ph.D.\, J.D.\n\nDr. Janulis concentrates her practice on securing patent rights in the life science technologies. She has extensive knowledge in the fields of biotechnology\, including molecular biology\, virology\, microbiology\, immunology\, biochemistry\, and pharmaceuticals. Among her specific areas of interest are reproductive biology\, developmental and animal biology\, cancer\, vaccines\, stem cell technologies\, antibodies\, pharmaceutical compositions\, recombinant organisms and expression systems\, recombinant proteins and methods of production and use\, transgenic animals\, assays and diagnostic methods\, and methods of treatment of various diseases and disorders.\n\nDr. Janulis received her J.D. from The John Marshall Law School. She earned her Ph.D. in molecular and reproductive endocrinology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Urology at Northwestern University Medical School prior to joining the Firm.\n\n\nWilliam K Merkel\, PhD.\, J.D.\n\nBiotechnology clients benefiting from Dr. Merkel’s technical and legal experience have ranged from industry leaders to start-up enterprises. He has experience in medical diagnostics and therapeutics\, agricultural and pharmaceutical products and methods\, genomics\, and medical and agricultural biotechnology. In addition to providing prosecution and litigation services in these areas\, he develops intellectual property strategies and assists clients with validity\, infringement and patentability opinions.\n\nDr. Merkel’s contributions to the field of biotechnology include graduate-level research that has contributed to our understanding of the molecular genetics of vitamin biosynthesis in prokaryotes. As a Research Fellow\, he discovered the Pan Operon\, revealing the organization of genes involved in pantothenate biosynthesis\, as reported in the peer-reviewed literature. This research experience and advanced training equip him with the ability to thoroughly understand the complex scientific technologies of his clients.\n\nDr. Merkel received his J.D. from New York University School of Law and his Ph.D. in biological sciences from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He earned a B.A. in economics and psychology from Knox College.\n\n\nEd Pagani\, Ph.D. Associate Director\, Health Technologies\n\nEd Pagani\, PhD\, works with faculty and researchers at the University of Michigan School of Medicine to promote\, protect and commercialize new discoveries. Ed gained extensive licensing and R&D experience in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries as Assistant Director\, Cardiopulmonary Pharmacology\, at Sterling Winthrop\; Senior Director\, Strategic Alliance at Pfizer\; and Vice President\, Molecular Diagnostics\, at Beckman Coulter. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University of Michigan’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and distinguished U​–M art professor Jim Cogswell has been invited to create a series of public window installations in response to the holdings of the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. For this visionary project\, the artist will adhere a procession of vivid images to the glass walls of the museums in a rhythmically evocative narrative\, based on reassembled fragments from a diverse range of artworks in both museums’ permanent collections. The juxtaposed images will address our shared histories and experiences while connecting the viewer to the origins and meaning of objects and their power to shape knowledge\, memory\, and identity. By leveraging the buildings’ unique architecture\, the artist expands our understanding of a museum as a cultural repository and highlights the significant role of these institutions in the life of the campus community.\nCosmogonic Tattoos is on view at UMMA April 22 through December 3\, 2017 and at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology from June 2 through December 17\, 2017.\nLead support for Cosmogonic Tattoos is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.

DESCRIPTION:In 2013\, artist Ernestine Ruben (BSDEs ’53) photographed the once-famed industrial complex Willow Run in Washtenaw County\, Michigan. Designed by her grandfather\, Detroit architect Albert Kahn\, for the Ford Motor Company\, Willow Run was an exemplar of American defense manufacturing because of its efficient mass-production of B-24 Liberators during World War II.\n\nFor this exhibition\, Ruben overlaid interior views of the now-dormant factory with imagined glimpses into her body’s interior landscape. The resulting compositions seem to breathe energy and light into the stagnant and cavernous spaces of Willow Run and suggest a longing for a productive existence undeterred by mortality for both Willow Run and the artist. Her grandfather’s role in the history of the site underscores Ruben’s personal connection.\n\nThe exhibition presents Ruben’s photographs of Willow Run in UMMA’s Photography Gallery and an original film—co-created by Ruben and video artist Seth Bernstein and featuring an original score by award-winning composer Stephen Hartke—in the Museum’s Forum.\n\nLead support for Ernestine Ruben at Willow Run: Mobilizing Memory is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:Featuring a selection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century photographs from the Museum’s collection\, Picturing Buildings illuminates the enduring appeal of photographing architecture\, from historic Turkish mosques and New York City skyscrapers\, to industrial factories and intimate domestic interiors. Each of these visually and spatially complex sites provides photographers with representational challenges and endless opportunities to innovate. This exhibition explores how photographers working in a range of contexts—from travel photography and photojournalism to historical documentation and modern art—use architecture to develop pictorial strategies in their own medium. Through selective framing\, dramatic perspectival distortion\, and heightened contrasts between light and dark\, photographers reinterpret their architectural subjects by focusing on the creative act of constructing a photograph. DESCRIPTION:Wavefunction\, Subsculpture 9\, by Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer\, is a kinetic sculpture and interactive installation that plays on the work of mid-century American designers Charles and Ray Eames.\n\nThe installation consists of 42 molded plastic chairs (designed by the Eameses in 1948) arranged in a grid and attached to electromechanical pistons. When visitors approach the chairs\, a surveillance system detects their presence and the closest chairs lift gently off the ground. The adjacent chairs follow\, and a wave movement spreads across the array. The software controlling the pistons is based on fluid dynamics\, so as more visitors approach the grid\, the chairs—whose iconic curving contours were also generated mathematically— mimic the complex interaction of multiple waves in water.\n\nThis performative installation complements the concurrent exhibition Moving Image: Performance\, which together constitute the second of three presentations at UMMA drawn from the collection of Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul. The works in this year-long trio of exhibitions represent traditional categories such as portraiture\, landscape\, and performance that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.\n\nLead support for Rafael Lozano-Hemmer: Wavefunction\, Subsculpture 9 is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:Commemorating the University of Michigan’s 2017 Bicentennial\, Victors for Art: Michigan’s Alumni Collectors celebrates the deep impact of Michigan alumni in the global art world. \n\nThis two-part exhibition presents works collected by a diverse group of alumni that represent the breadth of the University and over seventy years of graduating classes. Part II: Abstraction\, on view in the A. Alfred Taubman Gallery July 1 through October 29\, showcases modern and contemporary art by Pablo Picasso\, Alberto Giacometti\,\nLouise Nevelson\, Christo\, Lorna Simpson\, José Parlá\, and Do Ho Su\, among others. It also features a fifth-century Korean roof end tile and an Amish quilt\, as well as a work by an Inuit master—thus inviting visitors to explore the pleasures of abstraction across a wide range of media\, eras\, and genres. UMMA extends Part II: Abstraction into the Irving Stenn\, Jr. Family Gallery from August 19 through November 26\, 2017\, with the site-specific installation of Random International’s LED-light and motion-sensing dynamic sculpture\, Swarm Study / II. Victors for Art offers an unprecedented opportunity to view art that may have never been publicly displayed otherwise—and most certainly\, not all together.
