Depicting the Ann Arbor area before the establishment of the city\, the exhibit celebrates the Native American community and highlights its presence throughout the decades. DESCRIPTION:Since Ellie Harold started painting in 2003\, she has primarily been a landscape artist\, painting Michigan barns and lake shore scenes in oil. In November 2016\, following a trip to Mexico\, birds unexpectedly started migrating to her canvases and an entirely new body of work began to take shape. The current exhibit\, Flights of Fancy\, features birds in colorful\, light-filled works. The birds represent the lightness she associates with qualities of joy\, hope\, healing and inspiration she sees as a source of personal well-being.

DESCRIPTION:Steve and Ann Loveless both grew up in northwestern lower Michigan and love the nature and beauty of the outdoors. Steve is a fine art photographer\, and Ann is a textile artist. After exhibiting some of Ann’s textile designs inspired by Steve’s photography\, they had the idea to create works that morph a photograph into a textile. One aspect of the process is that it can trick the viewer into questioning what they are seeing and invite them to engage more with the work. Northwood Awakening\, a 25 by 5 foot piece that was the ArtPrize 2015 Public Vote Grand Prize winner\, will be on display.

DESCRIPTION:Laura Cavanagh is a Michigan native who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a BFA in Art & Design and a minor in Art History. Cavanagh’s work consists primarily of cut paper and mixed media. Working with these materials allows her to approach her work in much the same way a sculptor does: adding to and cutting away from. Cavanagh finds the artistic process to be deeply meditative. Cavanagh lives and has her studio in a historic home in downtown Rochester\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Cat Crotchett’s current work combines elements of eastern and western cultural patterns in fragments that together form something different than their individual parts. These images represent an intersection of information as well as ideas of cultural appropriation\, assimilation\, fragmentation and alteration. Crotchett uses wax because it is relevant to both eastern and early western artistic cultures. A professional artist for over 30 years\, Crotchett has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is a professor at Western Michigan University and lives in Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Professional artist and instructor Gregory Potter believes that anyone can develop artistic skill if they put the work into it. Potter’s teaching helps with that\, but he also shows his paintings in art fairs\, galleries and even Army barrack walls\, anywhere people enjoy art and laughing out loud. A flightless bird\, his flamingo isn’t deep or subversive\, but it does have a top hat and is riding on the back of a zebra that is standing in a nest powered by a propeller. Nothing unusual for a man who served four tours in the Middle East. Working in his home gallery in Franklin\, Indiana\, he is amused as viewers sometimes see his animals as “above all the B.S.” or “leaving without knowing where [they’re] going.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Majestic | Dream: A Selection of Color Woodcuts
DESCRIPTION:The Confucius Institute at U-M proudly presents “Majestic | Dream\,” a solo exhibition by Endi Poskovic\, Professor of Art at the Penny W. Stamps School of Arts and Design\, University of Michigan. Professor Poskovic’s creative practice considers a range of technologies as a way to explore certain characteristics of printed image: translation\, multiplicity\, seriality. Through his works\, Professor Poskovic seeks to construct representations that suggest broader themes of displacement\, exile\, memory and reconciliation. A frequent visitor to China\, Endi Poskovic\, Professor of Art at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, is a great admirer of Chinese and Asian visual and material arts. Poskovic’s work in woodblock relief printmedia reflects his deep fascination and a lasting involvement with Chinese intellectual and creative communities. To celebrate this long and fruitful engagement as a bridge between artistic China and the University of Michigan\, CIUM presents this exhibition.\n\nOver the course of years\, Poskovic has produced several major series of multi-plate color woodcut prints utilizing both established and non-traditional approaches frequently combining analog carving methods with laser engraving from bit-map data files. For this Confucius Institute sponsored exhibition\, Poskovic presents an intimate selection of color woodcuts from two series of works\, “Majestic” and “Dream”\, focusing on landscape imagery informed by real and imaginary topographies\, including several works which are based on his sketches drawn in China. Merging visual image with text\, Poskovic’s “Majestic Series” shifts the reading of the woodcut by providing an unexpected new context and forcing the viewer to continually reinterpret. In “Dream Series”\, Poskovic explores primitive strategies of early cinema to investigate personal and social histories\, shifting cultural identities\, environmental transformation\, migration and alienation.\n\nEndi Poskovic was educated in Yugoslavia\, Norway\, and the United States. His graphic works have been exhibited worldwide and have brought him many notable awards and honors\, including grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation\, the United States Fulbright Commission\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation\, the Norwegian Government\, the Camargo Foundation\, the Flemish Ministry of Culture\, the New York State Council on the Arts\, and the Art Matters Foundation\, among others. Museum collections which hold works by the artist include the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Jincheon Art Museum\, South Korea and others.

DESCRIPTION:Possession evolved in response to Ann Arbor artist Jaye Schlesinger’s interest in mindfulness and minimalism and the role they play in personal well being.  After disposing (selling\, recycling\, giving away) of everything that no longer served to enrich her life\, Schlesinger decided to merge this exercise with her art practice and depicted all of her remaining possessions in small oil paintings\, 380 in total. The paintings depict objects of functionality and ones of beauty\, eliciting contemplation and conversation about the ‘stuff’ we choose to live with.

DESCRIPTION:About the installation: As part of the Institute for the Humanities 2017-18  Year of Archives and Futures\, and in celebration of the U-M Bicentennial\, the Institute for the Humanities presents a new iteration of Mark Dion’s Waiting for the Extraordinary\, which was commissioned and first exhibited here in 2011. Inspired by the academic classifications invented by 19th-century Michigan Chief Justice Augustus B. Woodward\, this new\, architecturally scaled installation serves as an archive of the original\, and presents a single room with thirteen plastic sculptures\, each representing one of Woodward’s professorships. As viewers peer into the space and encounter these illuminated objects—reproduced using 3D imaging technology from original objects Dion found in departments and collections across the University of Michigan—they confront questions about the distinction between the rational and subjective in our construction of knowledge\, as well as role of the museum and institutions that continue to determine it.\n\nAbout the artist: Mark Dion’s work examines the ways in which dominant ideologies and public institutions shape our understanding of history\, knowledge\, and the natural world. “The job of the artist\,” he says\, “is to go against the grain of dominant culture\, to challenge perception and convention.” Appropriating archaeological\, field ecology\, and other scientific methods of collecting\, ordering\, and exhibiting objects\, Dion creates works that question the distinctions between ‘objective’ (‘rational’) scientific methods and ‘subjective’ (‘irrational’) influences. DESCRIPTION:Highlighting manuscripts and early printed books from the Special Collections Library\, the exhibit commemorates the 500th anniversary of a pivotal transformation in world history. In 1517\, Martin Luther\, a professor of theology and a monk\, published his scathing critique of indulgences\, a church practice that allowed Christians to buy off time from suffering for one’s sins in the afterlife.\n\nIssued in the provincial town of Wittenberg\, Luther's call for academic debate and reform unleashed a series of events that led to the break-up of Latin Christianity. The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond.\n\nThe late medieval German lands teemed with innovation. Novel forms of piety emerged\, the demand for practical learning grew\, more universities competed for students\, and wealth from both trade and mining transformed social relations. The dissemination of texts and ideas on an industrial scale via the printing press reshaped communication\, knowledge\, and belief. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections.  Titled Cosmogonic Tattoos\, his project will use adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Cunningham is currently the Associate Dean of Global Health and Director of the \nInstitute for Global Health (IGH) at Michigan State University. He serves as a representative for the College of Osteopathic Medicine on the University Curriculum Committee. He is a graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine\, interned at Brentwood/Cleveland Clinic Hospital\, graduated from the Emergency Medicine residency program at Akron General Medical Center\, and has a Master’s degree in Health Administrations.\n\nSpeaker’s Synopsis: Ninety miles separate the U.S. from Cuba\, but since the Cuban \nrevolution\, the two countries have been worlds apart. The United States embargo\, the fall of the U.S.S.R.\, and the death of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez have all had major economic impact on the Caribbean island and its ability to progress its standard of living. Although a low income country\, the socialist policies of Cuba have made great strides in the delivery of health care to their inhabitants\, as well as assisting other countries in need. How does a socialist country with a marginal economy provide the same longevity and infant mortality as the United States health system with all of its technology and resources?\n\nThis is the fifth in a six-lecture series. The subject is Cuba: Our Neighbor in Transition. The next lecture in this series will be October 26\, 2017. The title is Religion in the Cuban Revolution.

DESCRIPTION:Moving Image: Portraiture presents a contemporary spin on traditional notions of portraiture. In the video Towards An Architect\, Hannu Karjalainen portrays a fictional architect who is experiencing the response of people living in the structures he designed. Daniel Rozin’s Mirror No. 10 is driven by software\, written by the artist\, that generates a real-time reflection of the environment the screen is displayed in—specifically a live sketch of the viewer approaching the frame. Mesocosm (Northumberland\, UK) is an algorithmic work by Marina Zurkow that depicts the passage of time on the moors of Northeast England.\n\nMoving Image: Portraiture is the third of three exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul\, which since 2011 has been focused on media arts. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Before colonization\, complex hierarchical societies flourished in Central and West Africa. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi. Drawing on works from UMMA’s collection and several loans\, the exhibition demonstrates how authority was expressed and power contained across a range of historical cultures in Nigeria\, Ghana\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon.\n\nLead support for Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center.

DESCRIPTION:It is not well known that Brazil is home to the largest number of persons of Japanese descent outside of Japan itself\, with a population that likely exceeds that of the United States. Still less known is the fact that this population possesses a century-long history of not only consuming Japanese-language literature\, but also producing it. This talk will present a brief overview of this history\, with a focus on its early decades (1908-1941)\, and then consider ways that this history prompts us to reconsider many of the tacit and explicit presumptions that underlie the field of modern Japanese literature. \n    \nEdward Mack teaches modern Japanese literature and film at the University of Washington. His book\, _Manufacturing Modern Japanese Literature_\, examines the relationship between the concept of a national literature and the publishing industry. His current project is on the reading and writing of literature in the Japanese immigrant community in Brazil prior to the Second World War.

DESCRIPTION:Gas-liquid flows exist within many engineering devices including fuel injectors\, wave energy extraction devices\, fire suppression systems\, and PEM fuel cells. Many of these flows are challenging to explore experimentally and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations o↵er an alternative and useful approach to advance our understanding. For example\, the breakup of liquid fuel into droplets via atomization has a direct effect on combustion efficiency and pollutant formation\, yet a fundamental understanding of the complex process is absent. Laboratory experiments are inherently difficult to conduct because atomizing jets produce a large number of opaque droplets that hinder optical access to the breakup dynamics. With increasing computational resources and advancements in numerical methods\, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has emerged as a promising tool to investigate the fundamental nature of atomization. In this presentation\, I will present an overview of difficulties arising due to the discontinuities that exist at the gas-liquid interface and recent advances in numerical methods that overcome these challenges. Then I will discuss efforts to improve the the usefulness of the very large data-sets that result from CFD simulations. Details on computing the curvature of a gas-liquid interface\, implementing contact line dynamics\, performing physics extraction\, and coupling gas-liquid flow calculations with uncertainty quantification we be discussed.\n\nBio: Mark Owkes is an Assistant Professor in the department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Montana State University. He earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Clarkson University in 2008. He subsequently attained an MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2011 under the direction of Prof. Olivier Desjardins.

DESCRIPTION:Nostalgia and romance have long surrounded the Franciscan and Jesuit missions of America’s Spanish Borderlands\, in the process coloring how we all perceive the surviving archaeological record. From San Francisco (California)\, through the American Southwest to St. Augustine (Florida)\, a mainstream national narrative has constructed and perpetuated an idealized\, romanticized version of the Spanish mission in America – complete with Mission Revival architectural styles\, reconstructed archaeological sites that sometimes resemble Hollywood stage sets\, and last year’s controversial sainthood of Fr. Junipero Serra. This illustrated talk draws upon the speaker’s most recent archaeological evidence from across the Spanish Borderlands—including the four decades of (still on-going) excavations on St. Catherines Island (Georgia)—to suggest more historically-appropriate perspectives on America’s mission heritage.

DESCRIPTION:This talk describes a method for extending the classical Irving-Kirkwood procedure used in statistical mechanics for extracting local fluxes to the problem of continuum-on-continuum multiscale modeling. Expressions for stress and heat flux derived here are contrasted to those obtained using the standard Hill-Mandel approach. The polar nature of the macroscopic solid and the role of multiscale invariance are also addressed in the context of this method. Applications are explored within the finite element-based homogenization of solids.\n\nBio: Panos Papadopoulos is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and director of the Computational Solid Mechanics Laboratory. After obtaining his Diploma in Civil Engineering from the Aristotle University\, Greece\, he moved to California to pursue his graduate studies.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE585 Graduate Seminar Series - Cyberphysical Flight Planning for Nominal and Emergency Situations
DESCRIPTION:This presentation will describe fusion of traditional sensor data with new data from the Internet of Things (IoT) to provide better situational awareness to an autonomous flight planner.  IoT/sensor data fusion can substantially improve real-time contingency response including emergency flight planning\, and can enable a manned or unmanned aircraft to plan a route that minimizes risk based on entities on the ground as well as airborne objects and atmospheric conditions.  Of particular interest is modeling and consideration of power and thermal profiles for efficient fixed-wing Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) that host high-performance processing and solar energy harvesting systems that generate comparable power and thermal loads to propulsion system components. Nominal flight plans accomplish mission goals and satisfy constraints\, e.g.\, energy balance\, turbulence. Emergency landing plans are computed in real-time as needed to minimize risk to people and property on the ground as well as risk to the UAS when possible. Data sources investigated in our previous work include building\, terrain\, and street maps along with cell phone data. IoT data metrics include applicability\, currency\, availability\, cost\, and security. Data with potentially high value must be processed and communicated in the most efficient manner to support decision-making. The flight planner in turn must account for new IoT information through novel cost and reward metrics\, performance and safety constraints\, and means to deal with uncertainty and gaps in real-time data feeds. A combination of discrete (e.g.\, limited-horizon search\, Markov Decision Process) and geometric (e.g.\, Dubins) methods support the spectrum of hard real-time emergency response to long-term mission optimization activities required.\n\nAbout the speaker...\nDr. Ella Atkins is a Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan\, where she is director of the Autonomous Aerospace Systems (A2SYS) Lab. Dr. Atkins holds B.S. and M.S. degrees in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan. She previously served on the Aerospace Engineering faculty at the University of Maryland\, College Park.  Dr. Atkins is past-chair of the AIAA Intelligent Systems Technical Committee\, AIAA Associate Fellow\, IEEE senior member\, small public airport owner/operator (Shamrock Field\, Brooklyn\, MI) and private pilot. DESCRIPTION:In this presentation Raul Rodríguez will discuss what is really new in President Trump’s approach to Cuba and its possible impact for the island’s economic and political evolution\, its relations with other international actors\, and Cubans in the United States.\n\nThe use of Cuba policy as an exchange coin to favor the Cuban American right-wing in South Florida is not new. It was President Obama who really introduced a new dynamic by not taking that community into account in his December 17\, 2014 re-establishment of relations with Cuba.\n\nWhile is it unlikely that bilateral relations will return to the past\, Presidents Trump’s regulatory  changes  do stall progress and introduce uncertainly to the business climate and tension to the previous political environment.

I will discuss our efforts to describe mixed-state electronic dynamics with density matrix equations of motion\, and the applications of those theories to ultrafast experiments. \n\nRealtime mean field theories such as RT-TDDFT and RT-TDHF dominate applications because of the speed required to access picosecond timescales. Yet TDHF and TDDFT are not accurate enough to properly model resonant driving\, which is only one ingredient in ultrafast spectroscopy. In this talk I discuss a simple density-matrix equation of motion implemented as an approximation to RT-TDDFT\, which excites properly on resonance. Based on this foundation I compare the non-equilibrium steady states of the correct DFT and a Markovian bath model\, with essentially exact results coming from HEOM showing that TDDFT can be used to study driven ultrafast dynamics. I then discuss self-consistency in correlated corrections to TDDFT which have low cost and can be applied to large systems.\n\nStatistical sampling of molecular geometries has become an equally important issue\, although empirical density functionals\, which are the most practical tools for exploring geometries\, make an ambiguous mixture of quantum physics and statistical modeling. I will demonstrate purely statistical models of molecular structure\, and show that in the near future it is likely that purely empirical models of the PES will have several appealing advantages over empirical hybrids. of quantum mechanical models with statistics.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar: The influence of temperature\, productivity and food resources on biodiversity and range shifts
DESCRIPTION:Faunal and floral diversity are strongly correlated with climate. But whether the mechanistic climate-diversity link is direct through physiology\, clade-scale ecological or evolutionary climatic affinities\, or indirect through food resources and population sizes remains largely untested simultaneously. We assessed mammal diversity and population sizes\, arthropod biomass\, vegetation biomass\, climate (temperature\, precipitation) and productivity (NPP) across 32 sites spread among four elevational transects in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Structural equation modeling only detected support for a direct diversity-productivity relationship. In contrast\, the indirect “more individuals hypothesis” mediated through productivity’s influences on food resources was not supported. This suggests that high productivity areas represent an optimal environment whether that is due to contemporary climatic sorting or deeper-time\, evolutionary underpinnings of climate during diversification.\nDue to the strong climate associations of most clades\, the implications of climate change to fauna and flora on mountains are predicted to be dire. But the rush to assess species’ responses to anthropogenic climate change has underestimated the importance of interannual population variability. Using population simulations across a realistic\, empirically-based gradient in population variability\, the frequency and magnitude of population peaks and troughs greatly impact the accuracy of our climate change response measurements regardless of taxonomic group. Based on results for measurements of population decline\, local extirpation\, and range shifts\, several types of studies of climate change responses are not encouraged and additional sampling regimes are suggested to overcome biases associated with interannual population fluctuations.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EIHS Lecture: The Appropriation of Indigenous Knowledge from the \"Discovery\" of Rainbow Bridge to the Glen Canyon Dam Debates
DESCRIPTION:The stakes surrounding the construction of regional dams\, like Glen Canyon Dam\, were especially high for Native Americans. Such projects were built not only on Indigenous land\, but also depended on the appropriation of Indigenous knowledge. This talk traces how settlers\, scientists\, explorers\, and engineers sought to possess Indigenous knowledge and ended up creating an infrastructure of dispossession in the process. Indigenous people\, in turn\, engineered a variety of responses to retain possession of their land\, control religious activities\, foster greater cross-cultural understanding\, and manage their natural resources.\n\nProfessor Bsumek is currently associate professor of history at the University of Texas at Austin.  She earned a BA at the University of Utah and PhD from Rutgers University. She has written on Native American history\, environmental history\, the history of the built environment\, and the history of the US West. She is author of Indian-made: Navajo Culture in the Marketplace\, 1848-1860 (University Press of Kansas\, 2008) and the co-editor a collection of essays on global environmental history titled Nation States and the Global Environment: New Approaches to International Environmental History (Oxford University Press\, 2013). Her current research explores the social and environmental history of the area surrounding Glen Canyon Dam on the Utah-Arizona border from the 1840s to the present. The working title of the book\, currently under contract\, is \"Damming Zion: Mormons\, American Indians\, and the Fight for Resources on the Colorado Plateau\, 1800 to the Present.\" She is also working on a larger project that examines the impact that large construction projects (dams\, highways\, cities and suburbs) had on the American West which is tentatively titled \"The Concrete West: Engineering Society and Culture in the Arid West\, 1900-1970.\" She has written op-eds for publications such as Time\, Huffington Post\, Al Jazeera America\, and Pacific Standard and is currently a Provost's Teaching Fellow.\n\nFree and open to the public. \n\nThis event is part of the Thursday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. DESCRIPTION:Preceding the Little Black Dress was another aesthetic\, less noticeable if only by virtue of its material properties: The Little Glass Dress. This aesthetic exploited the female body’s relation to its environment in terms that were literally transparent: beginning with aisthesis as an opportunity for architectural display\, but extending its relationship to encasement in multiple forms. This talk contends that the Little Glass Dress begins with the evolution of the department store\, glimpsed through Zola’s 1883 novel The Ladies’ Paradise\, and continues through to incarnations ranging from the late 19th century Manet painting A Bar at the Folies-Bergère. It then jumps into the 20th century through the looking glass of Coco Chanel’s mirrored atelier staircase\, and runs alongside the avant-garde Italian couturière Elsa Schiaparelli and some later 20th and 21st century contemporary artists and couturiers. In all\, we see what feminist scholars have tracked as “the opacity of femininity” take the shape of an increasingly less protean mode: one that cuts increasingly closer if not to the bone\, then to that scrim where world stops and skin begins.

Shanks is the Mike and Jean Steffenson Chair and the \nAnson Marston Distinguished Professor in Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Iowa State University\n\n\nABSTRACT\n\nMuch of the effort in converting biomass to biobased chemicals has been driven by the retrosynthesis of target molecules. An alternative approach is the synthesis of “bioprivileged molecules” that are biology-derived chemical species that can be readily converted to a diversity of chemical products including drop-in replacements and novel species\, which can be used for next generation materials\, specialty chemicals\, nutraceuticals\, antimicrobials\, insecticides\, herbicides\, consumer goods\, etc. The dual potentiality of a bioprivileged molecule is vital in creating value from biomass since innovative bioproducts represents a powerful driver for the development of biobased chemicals beyond just replacing fossil carbon with renewable carbon. The important role of these molecules has been demonstrated as key intermediates in the integration of biology and chemistry by our NSF Engineering Research Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC). Several examples of bioprivileged molecules being developed by CBiRC will be discussed.\n\nThis is the Annual Blue/Green Seminar\, a joint lecture series inaugurated in Winter 1982 between the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan and the Department of Chemical and Material Science Department at Michigan State University.

DESCRIPTION:The English Language Institute and Kelsey Museum of Archeology team up to offer a special tour of the Kelsey’s current exhibition Excavating Archaeology at the University of Michigan\, 1817-2017 specifically tailored to introduce international graduate students and others who speak English as a second or additional language the history of archaeology at UM and the Kelsey Museum and at the same time to provide them with an English language immersion experience. \n\nProgram Overview\nResearch about past cultures and societies through archaeology has been a part of the University of Michigan since its founding in 1817.  And\, so have museums as places for students and professors to engage with these cultures and societies. The exhibition Excavating Archaeology at the University of Michigan\, 1817-2017\, explores that history in the fields of archaeology and museums at the University of Michigan for the past 200 years. It will conclude with a look through the permanent galleries of the Kelsey Museum.

He is the founded of Food Finders\, a web-based app that helps users find free food resources that are closest to their home\, school\, or current location.\n\nFood Gatherers\, an organization that works to alleviate hunger in the Ann Arbor community. They distribute more than 1\,000\,000 pounds of food to 150 non-profits in the Ann Arbor area.\n\nAnnie Grech is a University of Michigan student pursuing a BS in Biochemistry. She is the President of the University of Michigan chapter of the Food Recovery Network\, an organization that works to fight food waste and hunger by recovering perishable food that would otherwise go to waste.\n\nNaim Edwards works in the city of Detroit as an Evnironmental Specialist. DESCRIPTION:The unending series of inflammatory and reckless threats by Donald Trump and his top advisers against North Korea have provoked global fears that the world is being brought to the brink of a nuclear war and a catastrophic loss of human life.\nThe Trump administration’s relentless campaign of bellicose threats and military provocations makes clear that the danger of a catastrophic war\, which could drag in major powers such as China and Russia and escalate into a nuclear exchange\, is real and imminent. As he faces a mounting political crisis at home\, the US president may see a war with North Korea as a means of shoring up his administration and crushing domestic political opposition.\n\nBut the US drive to war is not simply the product of the fascistic President Trump. DESCRIPTION:As the film unfolds\, one single\, mesmerizing shot of a refugee boat adrift in the vast blue sea\, a web of stories unfolds and worlds intersect and collide. Against the flood of news images about the refugee crisis\, Collision radically redirects our imagination of Europe to a set of coordinates in the Mediterranean Sea. \n\nBased on the same research and Merle Kröger’s book by the same title (reading Oct 18 at 7pm at Literati bookstore.) \n\nHAVARIE premiered at the 2016 Berlin Film Festival and won the German Film Critics Award for Best Experimental Film 2016\, the arte-documentary award at the Duisburger Filmwoche\, Best international feature film at L'Alternativa Barcelona\, Best editing in an international feature at RIDM - Montreal international documentary festival\, and special  mention for the Prix Georges de Beauregard at the Festival International de Cinéma in Marseille.\n\nCo-sponsored by the Goethe Institute\, U-M Center for European Studies\, U-M Screen Arts and Cultures\, U-M Office of Research\, and the U-M Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures.\n\nIf you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event\, please contact Germanic Languages & Literatures at 734-764-8018 or germandept@umich.edu at least one week in advance.
