SUMMARY:Exhibition:Forever Unfinished: Making and Remaking a Public University
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 as a public institution\, a concept for which there were few models. What makes a university public? What should it look like? Whom should it serve? Who should have access to its resources\, and where should those resources come from?\n\nThis exhibit explores how students\, faculty\, staff\, politicians\, and citizens have attempted to answer these questions. These stories invite us to imagine U-M's future as a public university based on what we know about its past.\n\nExhibit team: Jonathan Farr\, Nora Krinitsky\, Michelle McClellan\, Gregory Parker\, Emily Price\, Kate Silbert\n\nThis LSA Bicentennial Theme Semester exhibit is presented with support from the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office. Additional support provided by the Department of History and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

DESCRIPTION:Since Ellie Harold started painting in 2003\, she has primarily been a landscape artist\, painting Michigan barns and lake shore scenes in oil. In November 2016\, following a trip to Mexico\, birds unexpectedly started migrating to her canvases and an entirely new body of work began to take shape. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Photography into Fiber: ArtPrize Winner
DESCRIPTION:Steve and Ann Loveless both grew up in northwestern lower Michigan and love the nature and beauty of the outdoors. Steve is a fine art photographer\, and Ann is a textile artist. After exhibiting some of Ann’s textile designs inspired by Steve’s photography\, they had the idea to create works that morph a photograph into a textile. One aspect of the process is that it can trick the viewer into questioning what they are seeing and invite them to engage more with the work. Northwood Awakening\, a 25 by 5 foot piece that was the ArtPrize 2015 Public Vote Grand Prize winner\, will be on display.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Cut Ups: Paper Collage
DESCRIPTION:Laura Cavanagh is a Michigan native who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a BFA in Art & Design and a minor in Art History. Cavanagh’s work consists primarily of cut paper and mixed media. Working with these materials allows her to approach her work in much the same way a sculptor does: adding to and cutting away from. Cavanagh finds the artistic process to be deeply meditative. Cavanagh lives and has her studio in a historic home in downtown Rochester\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Under Covers: Encaustic & Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:Cat Crotchett’s current work combines elements of eastern and western cultural patterns in fragments that together form something different than their individual parts. These images represent an intersection of information as well as ideas of cultural appropriation\, assimilation\, fragmentation and alteration. Crotchett uses wax because it is relevant to both eastern and early western artistic cultures. A professional artist for over 30 years\, Crotchett has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is a professor at Western Michigan University and lives in Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents When Pigs Fly: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Professional artist and instructor Gregory Potter believes that anyone can develop artistic skill if they put the work into it. Potter’s teaching helps with that\, but he also shows his paintings in art fairs\, galleries and even Army barrack walls\, anywhere people enjoy art and laughing out loud. A flightless bird\, his flamingo isn’t deep or subversive\, but it does have a top hat and is riding on the back of a zebra that is standing in a nest powered by a propeller. Nothing unusual for a man who served four tours in the Middle East. Working in his home gallery in Franklin\, Indiana\, he is amused as viewers sometimes see his animals as “above all the B.S.” or “leaving without knowing where [they’re] going.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Majestic | Dream: A Selection of Color Woodcuts
DESCRIPTION:The Confucius Institute at U-M proudly presents “Majestic | Dream\,” a solo exhibition by Endi Poskovic\, Professor of Art at the Penny W. Stamps School of Arts and Design\, University of Michigan. Professor Poskovic’s creative practice considers a range of technologies as a way to explore certain characteristics of printed image: translation\, multiplicity\, seriality. Through his works\, Professor Poskovic seeks to construct representations that suggest broader themes of displacement\, exile\, memory and reconciliation. A frequent visitor to China\, Endi Poskovic\, Professor of Art at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, is a great admirer of Chinese and Asian visual and material arts. Poskovic’s work in woodblock relief printmedia reflects his deep fascination and a lasting involvement with Chinese intellectual and creative communities. To celebrate this long and fruitful engagement as a bridge between artistic China and the University of Michigan\, CIUM presents this exhibition.\n\nOver the course of years\, Poskovic has produced several major series of multi-plate color woodcut prints utilizing both established and non-traditional approaches frequently combining analog carving methods with laser engraving from bit-map data files. For this Confucius Institute sponsored exhibition\, Poskovic presents an intimate selection of color woodcuts from two series of works\, “Majestic” and “Dream”\, focusing on landscape imagery informed by real and imaginary topographies\, including several works which are based on his sketches drawn in China. Merging visual image with text\, Poskovic’s “Majestic Series” shifts the reading of the woodcut by providing an unexpected new context and forcing the viewer to continually reinterpret. In “Dream Series”\, Poskovic explores primitive strategies of early cinema to investigate personal and social histories\, shifting cultural identities\, environmental transformation\, migration and alienation.\n\nEndi Poskovic was educated in Yugoslavia\, Norway\, and the United States. His graphic works have been exhibited worldwide and have brought him many notable awards and honors\, including grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation\, the United States Fulbright Commission\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation\, the Norwegian Government\, the Camargo Foundation\, the Flemish Ministry of Culture\, the New York State Council on the Arts\, and the Art Matters Foundation\, among others. Museum collections which hold works by the artist include the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Jincheon Art Museum\, South Korea and others.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reforming the Word: Martin Luther in Context
DESCRIPTION:Highlighting manuscripts and early printed books from the Special Collections Library\, the exhibit commemorates the 500th anniversary of a pivotal transformation in world history. In 1517\, Martin Luther\, a professor of theology and a monk\, published his scathing critique of indulgences\, a church practice that allowed Christians to buy off time from suffering for one’s sins in the afterlife.\n\nIssued in the provincial town of Wittenberg\, Luther's call for academic debate and reform unleashed a series of events that led to the break-up of Latin Christianity. The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond.\n\nThe late medieval German lands teemed with innovation. Novel forms of piety emerged\, the demand for practical learning grew\, more universities competed for students\, and wealth from both trade and mining transformed social relations. The dissemination of texts and ideas on an industrial scale via the printing press reshaped communication\, knowledge\, and belief. In this context\, reform—the renewal of a lost standard of the past in the present—became a battle-cry for religious\, economic\, and political change.\n\nAudubon Room hours: Monday-Friday 8:30am-6:00pm\, Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm\, Sunday 1:00-6:00pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition:EXHIBITION ON VIEW: PRACTICE SESSION #5
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on view October 23 -27\n\"Practice Sessions\" is part of the University of Michigan's \"Third Century Initiative\,\" which funds experimental pedagogies in a bid to change how teaching and learning happen within the bounds of the institution. Over a five-year period\, ten architectural practices will be invited to Taubman College to run a practice session. Each session centers on an immersive four-day design charette that culminates in a juried review and exhibition. These sessions are not workshops in the conventional sense. Invited practices are not selected to repeat a known and routinized working method in collaboration with students. Instead\, invitees are called to work in an experimental mode\, where everything is subject to the pressures of practice on design: the design of the session topic\, the design of the work space where the session is held\, the design of the way the session itself occupies the institution of Taubman College\, and the design of the thing(s) produced by the practice session.\nPractice Session #5 Opening lecture is on Friday\, October 20\, featuring Débora Mesa and Antón García-Abril\;\nThe workshop runs from October 21-22.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gloss: Modeling Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on the prominent role of women as the subject of photography\, GLOSS: Modeling Beauty explores the shifting ideals of female beauty that pervade European and American visual culture from the 1920s to today. The exhibition features images of sleek and poised female models and celebrities destined for the glossy pages of fashion magazines and catalogs by leading photographers such as Edward Steichen\, Philippe Halsman\, Helmut Newton\, Andy Warhol\, and Guy Bourdin. Outside of commercial advertising practice\, documentary photographers Elliott Erwitt\, Joel Meyerowitz\, and Ralph Gibson portray candid images of fashionable women on city streets and mannequins in shop windows\, resulting in intriguing juxtapositions of haute couture and everyday life. And\nartists James Van Der Zee\, Eduardo Paolozzi\, and Nikki S. Lee employ the visual strategies of traditional fashion photography\, while offering alternative narratives to mainstream notions of female beauty.\n\nLead support for Gloss: Modeling Beauty is provided by Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Moving Image: Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:Moving Image: Portraiture presents a contemporary spin on traditional notions of portraiture. In the video Towards An Architect\, Hannu Karjalainen portrays a fictional architect who is experiencing the response of people living in the structures he designed. Daniel Rozin’s Mirror No. 10 is driven by software\, written by the artist\, that generates a real-time reflection of the environment the screen is displayed in—specifically a live sketch of the viewer approaching the frame. Mesocosm (Northumberland\, UK) is an algorithmic work by Marina Zurkow that depicts the passage of time on the moors of Northeast England.\n\nMoving Image: Portraiture is the third of three exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul\, which since 2011 has been focused on media arts. The works in this series address both formal concerns and conceptual topics\; many represent traditional categories such as portraiture and landscape that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.\n\nLead support for Moving Image: Portraiture is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Before colonization\, complex hierarchical societies flourished in Central and West Africa. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi. Drawing on works from UMMA’s collection and several loans\, the exhibition demonstrates how authority was expressed and power contained across a range of historical cultures in Nigeria\, Ghana\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon.\n\nLead support for Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Brown Bag | Extended Steinmann Relations and Cosmic Galois Theory in Planar N = 4
DESCRIPTION:While traditional methods for calculating scattering amplitudes prove too computationally intensive to be useful at higher loop orders\, a great deal is now known about the analytic and kinematic properties of amplitudes to all orders in planar N=4. This information can be leveraged to construct these amplitudes directly\, by putting together an ansatz of the relevant class of functions and requiring that it share the distinctive properties of a given amplitude. In this talk\, I will describe how this bootstrap-type approach can be used to uniquely determine all six-particle amplitudes in this theory through (at least) five loops\, focusing on how these methods make transparent the Steinmann relations and bear out the predictions of cosmic Galois theory. I will also discuss how these methods can be generalized to quantities of direct relevance to particle physics experiments.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Social Psychology Brown Bag-\"The effect of psychological distance on what we learn and what we learn from\"
DESCRIPTION:I address from the perspective of construal level theory two fundamental questions about human learning: How broadly we generalize what we learn and how large is the scope of experience that we choose to learn from. A series of studies on predictive learning suggests that introducing longer temporal distance and lower probability between the predictor and the outcome\, as well as between the learning experience and its anticipated application increases generalization breadth. I also show some evidence suggesting that people extract broader\, more general lessons from narratives that are more spatio-temporally distal and hypothetical. A series of studies on decision making suggests that people seek to obtain more and broader experience when they face a more abstract question\, as well as when they make decisions that are more distal in time and when they advise others rather than make decisions for themselves. I discuss these lines of research within the broader context of questions about how people regulate themselves with respect to distal and proximal targets.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Amazing Molihua: Culture and Meaning of China’s Most Well-known Folksong
DESCRIPTION:Internationally known as “Jasmine\,” the song molihua was an East-China folksong of humble beginning. Like many regional folksongs in China whose origins were mostly unknown\, molihua exists throughout the region in numerous versions. The molihua that most people know today was collected and documented by British diplomats George MaCartney and John Barrow presented in his book Travel in China in late 18th century. Puccini’s incorporation of it in his opera Turandot in 1924\, further consolidated the tune’s global reputation. Since then\, molihua has emerged as the most well-known Chinese musical and cultural icon at home and abroad. This presentation traces the brief history of molihua and describes the different ways that it was being utilized. Dr. Lau argues hat the shifting meaning of molihua is predicated on what molihua represents against the ever-changing economic and political context of China since the new millennium. \n\nFrederick Lau is an ethnomusicologist\, flutist\, and conductor whose scholarly interests include a broad range of topics in Chinese\, Western\, and Asian music and cultures. He is author of Music in China (Oxford 2008) and co-editor of Making Waves: Traveling Musics in Asia and the Pacific (Uiversity of Hawaii Press\, forthcoming)\, Vocal Music and Cultural Identity in Contemporary Music: Unlimited Voices in East Asia and the West (Routledge 2013)\, Locating East Asia in Western Art Music (Wesleyan 2004). Lau is editor of the book series entitled Music and Performing Arts of Asia and the Pacific\, University of Hawaii Press. Currently\, he is the chair and professor of Ethnomusicology and director of the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:Are Tax Breaks Entitlements?
DESCRIPTION:U. S. federal income tax policies include a large number of provisions widely known as tax breaks or tax loopholes. More specifically they come in the form of deductions\, credits\, exclusions and preferential rates. They have the effect of significantly reducing the income taxes paid (i.e.\, the effective tax rate) by individuals and corporations. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates in 2017 all tax breaks combined will amount to $1.6 trillion. \n\nThis study group for those 50 and over will focus on the political psychology of these tax breaks: the attitudes and behaviors of individuals\, interest groups\, political parties and policymakers in the public policymaking process. Discussion of a large number of specific tax breaks will be included. Information on tax breaks will be distributed by the instructor to provide a foundation for the sessions. \nInstructor Craig Ramsay is an Emeritus Professor of Politics and Government at Ohio Wesleyan University who taught about the politics of economic policymaking for four decades. This study group will meet for two hours on Wednesday’s from October 25 through November 15.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Irina Tezaur: Next-generation modeling & simulation of large-scale ice sheets towards probabilistic sea-level change projections
DESCRIPTION:Recent observations show that both the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are losing mass at increasingly rapid rates [1]. In its fourth assessment report (AR4)\, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) declined to include estimates of future sea-level change from dynamics of the polar ice sheets due to the inability of ice sheet models to mimic or explain observed dynamic behaviors\, such as the acceleration and thinning then occurring on several of Greenland’s large outlet glaciers [2]. In recent years\, there has been a push to develop “next generation” land-ice models and codes for integration into global Earth System Models (ESMs). Unlike their predecessors\, these codes: (1) are able to perform realistic\, high-resolution\, continental scale simulations\, (2) are robust\, efficient and scalable on next-generation hybrid systems (multi-core\, many-core\, GPU\, Intel Xeon Phi)\, and (3) possess built-in advanced analysis capabilities (e.g.\, sensitivity analysis\, optimization\, uncertainty quantification). This talk will give an overview of the Albany/FELIX (Finite Elements for Land Ice eXperiments) [3] next-generation land-ice dynamical core (dycore) that is under development at Sandia National Laboratories as a part of a Department of Energy (DOE) SciDAC-funded project aimed at providing probabilistic sea-level projections from extreme-scale ice sheet and earth system models. This dycore is currently being integrated in to the DOE’s Acelerated Climate Model for Energy (ACME)\, which will be used to calculate anticipated 21st sea-level change projections\, including uncertainty bounds. It is widely accepted that land-ice behaves like a very viscous\, shear-thinning\, non-Newtonian fluid\, similar to lava flow. Typically\, ice sheets are modeled using a quasi-static model in which a steady momentum-balance system for the ice velocities is coupled to dynamic equations for the ice thickness and temperature. The Albany/FELIX dycore is based on the so-called “First-Order Stokes” equations for the ice momentum balance [4]\, an attractive alternative to the more expensive “Full Stokes” model because of its reduced computational cost. Following an overview of our land-ice model and project\, I will describe some of the algorithms and software we have developed as a part of this project that have contributed to our dycore’s robustness and scalability. These include: robust automatic-differentiation-based nonlinear solvers\, scalable algebraic-multigrid-based iterative linear solvers [5]\, adaptive mesh refinement capabilities\, and stable semi-implicit First-Order Stokes-thickness coupling methods. I will also discuss some of the advanced analysis capabilities in Albany/FELIX\, namely a large-scale inversion approach we have developed for obtaining optimal ice initial conditions [6]\, our workflow towards quantifying uncertainties in land-ice models\, and performance-portability of the Albany/FELIX code to new and emerging architectures using the Kokkos library [7]. I will show results which demonstrate that the Albany/FELIX dycore is scalable\, fast and robust for production-scale land-ice problems on state-of-the-art HPC machines. I will also discuss results from a recent validation study in which Albany/FELIX was used to simulate the Greenland ice sheet during the period 1991-2013 with realistic climate forcing\, and the simulation data were compared with observational data collected by NASA satellites [8]\n\nBio: Dr. Irina Tezaur (f.k.a. Dr. Irina Kalashnikova) is a Principal Member of Technical Staff (PMTS) in the Extreme Scales Data Science & Analytics Department (Org. 8759) at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore\, CA. Prior to joining this group\, from October 2011 to September 2014\, she was SMTS in the Computational Mathematics Department (Org. 1442) at Sandia in Albuquerque\, NM.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | \nHighlights from Recent LIGO and Virgo Observations\n
DESCRIPTION:Following the first Advanced LIGO data run (O1) in fall 2015\, which included two definitive gravitational wave discoveries of binary black hole mergers\, LIGO commissioners spent much of 2016 working to improve detector sensitivity\, with mixed success. Data taking resumed with the start of the O2 run near the end of 2016 and continued through the summer of 2017\, yielding additional discoveries. For the last several weeks of the O2 run\, the European gravitational wave detector\, Virgo\, also collected data in parallel\, providing not only independent corroboration of detection\, but also dramatically improving source localization via triangulation across the Earth's surface. Highlights from early analysis of the O2 observations will be presented.\n

SUMMARY:Other:Illuminating the single-cell biology of chemical signals in bacterial and immune cells
DESCRIPTION: The current decade has seen several unexpected discoveries of nucleotide-based signals that control the autonomous behavior of bacterial and immune cells. The newfound signaling pathways may provide new ways to combat antibiotic-resistant pathogens and to enhance the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapy treatments. However\, critical questions remain about the biochemistry of the signaling enzymes and cell biology of the signals themselves. Tackling these questions requires tracking nucleotide-based signaling molecules in the complex environment of the cell\, which poses a difficult molecular recognition challenge.\nMy lab has taken a structure-based design coupled to high-throughput screening approach and was among the first to develop RNA-based fluorescent biosensors\, or RBF biosensors\, for live cell imaging. Our biosensors exhibit remarkable specificity and affinity for nucleotide-based signals\, are the brightest to date in live cell imaging studies\, and can be rationally reprogrammed to sense new ligands. In this seminar\, I will present the design principles that enable effective allosteric coupling of ligand binding to fluorescence activation of a small molecule chromophore. We have demonstrated performing\, in essence\, in vivo biochemistry experiments to track dynamic effects of endogenous chemical cues and inhibitor compounds on enzyme activity in live bacteria. This approach has revealed a new strategy to combat antibiotic resistance. We also have applied these biosensors to make several biological discoveries\, including a signaling pathway that regulates how some bacteria interact with redox reactive surfaces. Finally\, I will describe another broad application for these biosensors\, as novel high-throughput screening assays for promising enzyme targets in cancers and autoimmune diseases. \n \n \n \n \nMing Hammond (UC Berkeley)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Interdisciplinary Seminar in Quantitative Methods (ISQM): Text Preprocessing for Unsupervised Learning: Why It Matters\, When It Misleads\, and What to Do about It
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nDespite the popularity of unsupervised techniques for political science text-as-data research\, the importance and implications of preprocessing decisions in this domain have received scant systematic attention. Yet\, as we show\, such decisions have profound effects on the results of real models for real data. We argue that substantive theory is typically too vague to be of use for feature selection\, and that the supervised literature is not necessarily a helpful source of advice. To aid researchers working in unsupervised settings\, we introduce a statistical procedure and software that examines the sensitivity of findings under alternate preprocessing regimes. This approach complements a researcher's substantive understanding of a problem by providing a characterization of the variability changes in preprocessing choices may induce when analyzing a particular dataset. In making scholars aware of the degree to which their results are likely to be sensitive to their preprocessing decisions\, it aids replication efforts.

SUMMARY:Other:Google: The New Face of Internet Censorship
DESCRIPTION:Public meeting\, Mason Hall room 2306. In an act of political censorship\, Google is blocking Internet traffic to a variety of socialist and left-wing websites\, including the World Socialist Web Site\, Alternet\, Wikileaks\, Counterpunch\, Truth-out\, and Common Dreams. Under the guise of combating “fake news\,” this corporate giant is collaborating with the US government and the Democratic Party to limit access to political opinions that the ruling class deems “incorrect.”\nGoogle’s censorship is part of broader moves to control information on the Internet\, involving Facebook\, YouTube\, Twitter and other corporations. The ruling elite fears that the free flow of information online threatens will encourage the growth of opposition to war\, inequality and the attack on democratic rights.\n\nThis meeting is called by the Socialist Equality Party\, the International Youth and Students for Social Equality\, and the World Socialist Web Site\, which is the censors’ primary target. The meeting will present the facts about Google’s attack on left-wing websites and lay out a plan for fighting censorship by placing the Internet under democratic control.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Historian in the Ghetto: Emanuel Ringelblum and the Oyneg Shabes Archive
DESCRIPTION:During World War II Jews resisted not only with guns but also with pen and paper. Even in the face of death they left \"time capsules\" full of documents that they buried under the rubble of ghettos and death camps. The Ringelblum archive in the Warsaw Ghetto buried thousands of documents. But of the 60 people who worked on this national mission\, only three survived. This will be their story.\n\nPhoto Credit: Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw\n\nIf you have a disability that requires a reasonable accommodation\, contact the Judaic Studies office at 734-763-9047 at least two weeks prior to the event.
