SUMMARY:Exhibition:Forever Unfinished: Making and Remaking a Public University
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 as a public institution\, a concept for which there were few models. What makes a university public? What should it look like? Whom should it serve? Who should have access to its resources\, and where should those resources come from?\n\nThis exhibit explores how students\, faculty\, staff\, politicians\, and citizens have attempted to answer these questions. These stories invite us to imagine U-M's future as a public university based on what we know about its past.\n\nExhibit team: Jonathan Farr\, Nora Krinitsky\, Michelle McClellan\, Gregory Parker\, Emily Price\, Kate Silbert\n\nThis LSA Bicentennial Theme Semester exhibit is presented with support from the College of Literature\, Science\, and the Arts and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office. Additional support provided by the Department of History and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Flights of Fancy: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Since Ellie Harold started painting in 2003\, she has primarily been a landscape artist\, painting Michigan barns and lake shore scenes in oil. In November 2016\, following a trip to Mexico\, birds unexpectedly started migrating to her canvases and an entirely new body of work began to take shape. The current exhibit\, Flights of Fancy\, features birds in colorful\, light-filled works. The birds represent the lightness she associates with qualities of joy\, hope\, healing and inspiration she sees as a source of personal well-being.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Photography into Fiber: ArtPrize Winner
DESCRIPTION:Steve and Ann Loveless both grew up in northwestern lower Michigan and love the nature and beauty of the outdoors. Steve is a fine art photographer\, and Ann is a textile artist. After exhibiting some of Ann’s textile designs inspired by Steve’s photography\, they had the idea to create works that morph a photograph into a textile. One aspect of the process is that it can trick the viewer into questioning what they are seeing and invite them to engage more with the work. Northwood Awakening\, a 25 by 5 foot piece that was the ArtPrize 2015 Public Vote Grand Prize winner\, will be on display.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Cut Ups: Paper Collage
DESCRIPTION:Laura Cavanagh is a Michigan native who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a BFA in Art & Design and a minor in Art History. Cavanagh’s work consists primarily of cut paper and mixed media. Working with these materials allows her to approach her work in much the same way a sculptor does: adding to and cutting away from. Cavanagh finds the artistic process to be deeply meditative. Cavanagh lives and has her studio in a historic home in downtown Rochester\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Under Covers: Encaustic & Mixed Media
DESCRIPTION:Cat Crotchett’s current work combines elements of eastern and western cultural patterns in fragments that together form something different than their individual parts. These images represent an intersection of information as well as ideas of cultural appropriation\, assimilation\, fragmentation and alteration. Crotchett uses wax because it is relevant to both eastern and early western artistic cultures. A professional artist for over 30 years\, Crotchett has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is a professor at Western Michigan University and lives in Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents When Pigs Fly: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Professional artist and instructor Gregory Potter believes that anyone can develop artistic skill if they put the work into it. Potter’s teaching helps with that\, but he also shows his paintings in art fairs\, galleries and even Army barrack walls\, anywhere people enjoy art and laughing out loud. A flightless bird\, his flamingo isn’t deep or subversive\, but it does have a top hat and is riding on the back of a zebra that is standing in a nest powered by a propeller. Nothing unusual for a man who served four tours in the Middle East. Working in his home gallery in Franklin\, Indiana\, he is amused as viewers sometimes see his animals as “above all the B.S.” or “leaving without knowing where [they’re] going.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Majestic | Dream: A Selection of Color Woodcuts
DESCRIPTION:The Confucius Institute at U-M proudly presents “Majestic | Dream\,” a solo exhibition by Endi Poskovic\, Professor of Art at the Penny W. Stamps School of Arts and Design\, University of Michigan. Professor Poskovic’s creative practice considers a range of technologies as a way to explore certain characteristics of printed image: translation\, multiplicity\, seriality. Through his works\, Professor Poskovic seeks to construct representations that suggest broader themes of displacement\, exile\, memory and reconciliation. A frequent visitor to China\, Endi Poskovic\, Professor of Art at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, is a great admirer of Chinese and Asian visual and material arts. Poskovic’s work in woodblock relief printmedia reflects his deep fascination and a lasting involvement with Chinese intellectual and creative communities. To celebrate this long and fruitful engagement as a bridge between artistic China and the University of Michigan\, CIUM presents this exhibition.\n\nOver the course of years\, Poskovic has produced several major series of multi-plate color woodcut prints utilizing both established and non-traditional approaches frequently combining analog carving methods with laser engraving from bit-map data files. For this Confucius Institute sponsored exhibition\, Poskovic presents an intimate selection of color woodcuts from two series of works\, “Majestic” and “Dream”\, focusing on landscape imagery informed by real and imaginary topographies\, including several works which are based on his sketches drawn in China. Merging visual image with text\, Poskovic’s “Majestic Series” shifts the reading of the woodcut by providing an unexpected new context and forcing the viewer to continually reinterpret. In “Dream Series”\, Poskovic explores primitive strategies of early cinema to investigate personal and social histories\, shifting cultural identities\, environmental transformation\, migration and alienation.\n\nEndi Poskovic was educated in Yugoslavia\, Norway\, and the United States. His graphic works have been exhibited worldwide and have brought him many notable awards and honors\, including grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation\, the United States Fulbright Commission\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation\, the Norwegian Government\, the Camargo Foundation\, the Flemish Ministry of Culture\, the New York State Council on the Arts\, and the Art Matters Foundation\, among others. Museum collections which hold works by the artist include the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum\, Detroit Institute of Arts\, Jincheon Art Museum\, South Korea and others.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Reforming the Word: Martin Luther in Context
DESCRIPTION:Highlighting manuscripts and early printed books from the Special Collections Library\, the exhibit commemorates the 500th anniversary of a pivotal transformation in world history. In 1517\, Martin Luther\, a professor of theology and a monk\, published his scathing critique of indulgences\, a church practice that allowed Christians to buy off time from suffering for one’s sins in the afterlife.\n\nIssued in the provincial town of Wittenberg\, Luther's call for academic debate and reform unleashed a series of events that led to the break-up of Latin Christianity. The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond.\n\nThe late medieval German lands teemed with innovation. Novel forms of piety emerged\, the demand for practical learning grew\, more universities competed for students\, and wealth from both trade and mining transformed social relations. The dissemination of texts and ideas on an industrial scale via the printing press reshaped communication\, knowledge\, and belief. In this context\, reform—the renewal of a lost standard of the past in the present—became a battle-cry for religious\, economic\, and political change.\n\nAudubon Room hours: Monday-Friday 8:30am-6:00pm\, Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm\, Sunday 1:00-6:00pm

SUMMARY:Exhibition:EXHIBITION ON VIEW: PRACTICE SESSION #5
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition on view October 23 -27\n\"Practice Sessions\" is part of the University of Michigan's \"Third Century Initiative\,\" which funds experimental pedagogies in a bid to change how teaching and learning happen within the bounds of the institution. Over a five-year period\, ten architectural practices will be invited to Taubman College to run a practice session. Each session centers on an immersive four-day design charette that culminates in a juried review and exhibition. These sessions are not workshops in the conventional sense. Invited practices are not selected to repeat a known and routinized working method in collaboration with students. Instead\, invitees are called to work in an experimental mode\, where everything is subject to the pressures of practice on design: the design of the session topic\, the design of the work space where the session is held\, the design of the way the session itself occupies the institution of Taubman College\, and the design of the thing(s) produced by the practice session.\nPractice Session #5 Opening lecture is on Friday\, October 20\, featuring Débora Mesa and Antón García-Abril\;\nThe workshop runs from October 21-22.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Yuris Dzenis
DESCRIPTION:“Breaking High-Performance Fiber Development Paradigm: Continuous Supernanofibers for Structural and Biomedical Applications”\n\nABSTRACT: Advanced fibers produced a revolution in structural and functional materials in the 20th Century and are now used in a myriad of applications from aerospace to automotive\, medical\, and sporting goods. However\, there was no major breakthrough in advanced fiber development since the last carbon fiber introduction by the Japanese more than three decades ago. Classical manufacturing techniques for ultrahigh-performance polymer fibers rely on combination of high polymer crystallinity and high degree of macromolecular alignment to achieve superior mechanical properties. As a consequence\, advanced fibers such as Kevlar and Spectra possess extraordinary strength but low strain to failure (<3%) and therefore low toughness. Our recent analysis of electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers (NFs) in the ultrafine (100-250 nm) diameter range (~100 times thinner than conventional advanced fibers) showed extraordinary simultaneous increases in strength\, modulus\, AND toughness. Finest nanofilaments exhibited strength on the par with the best advanced fibers while exceeding their toughness by more than an order of magnitude. Structural investigations showed that this unique and highly desirable mechanical behavior may be due to high degree of macromolecular alignment in conjunction with low crystallinity. We have demonstrated that it is possible to further improve NF mechanical properties by changing nanomanufacturing parameters. Reduction in crystallinity of nanofibers achieved through modified processing resulted in further increases in strain to failure and toughness. Remarkably\, it has also resulted in improvements in NF strength and modulus that were attributed to improved polymer chain alignment as a result of increased drawability. Notably\, the major improvements in mechanical properties were observed in the intermediate (250-500 nm) diameter range. NFs with these larger diameters are easier to produce and handle\, simplifying the upscaling of the nanomanufacturing process. Reported dramatic (2-3 orders of magnitude) simultaneous improvements in mechanical properties of NFs can lead to inexpensive\, simultaneously strong and tough materials for safety critical applications. The proposed structural explanation of the newly discovered NF mechanical behavior challenges the prevailing paradigm in advanced fiber development calling for high polymer crystallinity and can lead to the entirely new class of advanced fibers with ultrahigh toughness\, in addition to strength. Such fibers can ultimately result in ultralight structures with the strength higher than carbon-epoxy composites (the current state-of-the-art) but much higher toughness rivaling that of metals. Recent results on bionanofibers and carbon\, as well as applications of these fibers in hierarchical supercomposites and biomedicine are also discussed.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE Defense: Conjugate Analysis of Two-Dimensional Ablation and Pyrolysis in Rocket Nozzles
DESCRIPTION:The development of a methodology and computational framework for performing conjugate analyses of transient\, two-dimensional ablation of pyrolyzing materials in rocket nozzle applications is presented. This new engineering methodology comprehensively incorporates aero-thermal-chemical processes relevant to nozzles and other high-temperature components\, making it possible\, for the first time\, to rigorously capture the strong interactions and interdependencies that exist between the reacting flowfield and the ablating material. By basing thermal protection system engineering more firmly on first principles\, improved analysis accuracy can be achieved.\n\nThis computational framework couples a multi-species\, reacting flow solver to a two-dimensional material response solver. Five different treatments of the surface energy balance at the ablating wall\, with increasing levels of fidelity\, are investigated. The Integrated Equilibrium Surface Chemistry treatment computes the surface energy balance and recession rate directly from the diffusive fluxes at the ablating wall\, without making transport coefficient or unity Lewis number assumptions\, or requiring pre-computed surface thermochemistry tables. This method can inherently account for the effects that recession\, wall temperature\, blowing\, and the presence of ablation product species in the boundary layer have on the flowfield and ablation response. As a result\, improved agreement with experimental surface recession data is obtained.\n\nPublications\n\nPeer-Reviewed Journal Article:\nPeter G. Cross and Iain D. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:RELIGION IN THE CUBAN REVOLUTION
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Pedraza\, is a Professor of Sociology and American Culture at UM\, where she received a B.A. and M.A.\; her Ph.D. in Sociology is from the University of Chicago. She was born and raised in Cuba\, from where she immigrated with her family. Her work seeks to understand the causes and consequences of immigration as a historical process that forms and transforms persons and nations. She is the author of three books and numerous articles.\n\nIn this talk Professor Pedraza traces the changing relationship of the church and state during the Cuban revolution. Over the course of nearly 60 years\, the Cuban revolution has had several distinct relationships to the Church\, ranging from open confrontation and silencing to incorporation. Changing its definition from an atheist society in the early years of the revolution to a secular society now\, today it is more possible to be religious and to practice one’s faith in Cuba than it was earlier in this half century.\n\nThis is the last in a six-lecture series. The subject is Cuba: Our Neighbor in Transition. The next lecture series will start November 2\, 2017. The title is The Common People in Modern Politics.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Moving Image: Portraiture
DESCRIPTION:Moving Image: Portraiture presents a contemporary spin on traditional notions of portraiture. In the video Towards An Architect\, Hannu Karjalainen portrays a fictional architect who is experiencing the response of people living in the structures he designed. Daniel Rozin’s Mirror No. 10 is driven by software\, written by the artist\, that generates a real-time reflection of the environment the screen is displayed in—specifically a live sketch of the viewer approaching the frame. Mesocosm (Northumberland\, UK) is an algorithmic work by Marina Zurkow that depicts the passage of time on the moors of Northeast England.\n\nMoving Image: Portraiture is the third of three exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul\, which since 2011 has been focused on media arts. The works in this series address both formal concerns and conceptual topics\; many represent traditional categories such as portraiture and landscape that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.\n\nLead support for Moving Image: Portraiture is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Before colonization\, complex hierarchical societies flourished in Central and West Africa. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi. Drawing on works from UMMA’s collection and several loans\, the exhibition demonstrates how authority was expressed and power contained across a range of historical cultures in Nigeria\, Ghana\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon.\n\nLead support for Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture | Dynasties and Democracy in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Political dynasties exist in nearly all democracies\, but have been conspicuously prevalent in Japan\, where over a third of all legislators and two-thirds of all cabinet ministers in recent years come from families with a history in parliament. Such a high proportion of dynasties in a developed democracy is unusual\, and has sparked concerns over whether the democratic processes in Japan are working properly. In his forthcoming book\, Dynasties and Democracy: The Inherited Incumbency Advantage in Japan\, Smith introduces a comparative theory to explain the persistence of dynastic politics in democracies like Japan\, focusing in particular on electoral rules and party recruitment processes. Original legislator-level data from twelve democracies and candidate-level data from Japan are used to explore the implications of this theory for candidate selection\, election\, and cabinet promotion\, as well as the consequences of dynasties for democratic representation. \n \nDaniel M. Smith is Assistant Professor in the Department of Government at Harvard University\, where he is also affiliated with the Reischauer Institute of Japanese Studies\, the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs\, the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies\, and the Institute for Quantitative Social Science. His research focuses on the impact of political institutions\, especially electoral systems and candidate selection processes\, on aspects of democratic representation and behavior in Japan and Western Europe.\n\nCo-sponsored by the Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Bioscience Talk
DESCRIPTION:Talk Title: Cultural Fit: Its Role in Health and Health Disparities\n\nMy research shows that health and well-being depend upon cultural fit—the match between the pervasive ideas and norms in a context and characteristics of an individual. In three studies\, using large representative data sets and community samples\, I show that people who experience cultural fit behave in healthier ways and have physiological markers that indicate lower risk for cardiovascular disease. First\, looking at fit with one’s national culture\, I show that Americans who fit the mainstream American cultural norm of independence and Japanese who fit the mainstream Japanese cultural norm of interdependence eat a healthier diet. Next\, I turn to comparisons of groups within a country. I demonstrate that higher SES individuals who are more independent—that is\, who fit with norms in higher SES contexts—and lower SES individuals who are more interdependent—that is\, who fit with norms in lower SES contexts—have lower levels of allostatic load\, a marker of biological risk across multiple systems in the body. Finally\, I extend the operationalization of fit beyond the distinction between independence and interdependence by showing that students of color\, whom previous research shows tend to value diversity\, are healthier when they attend schools that value diversity. Specifically\, they have fewer metabolic syndrome signs and lower levels of inflammation\, both indicators of decreased cardiovascular disease risk. Across diverse settings with different indicators of health\, these studies highlight the previously unexplored role of cultural fit in health and suggest that interventions to improve cultural fit may help to reduce health disparities.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Growing Protocols: Documenting the Collaborative Process within the Heritage Seeds for Sustainable Lifeways Project
DESCRIPTION:As museum professionals respond to the growing demand for collaboration with Native American communities\, the Heritage Seeds for Sustainable Lifeways project departs from typical collaborative efforts. While museum collaborations have overwhelmingly centered on museum exhibitions\, Heritage Seeds focuses on research collections. Here\, the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology (UMMAA) plant collections are the focal point of developing conversations. This presentation will explore my experience with the Heritage Seeds Project through my practicum at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. In particular\, I will focus on the ways this project has begun to incorporate a broad range of individuals from a variety of university settings\, museum backgrounds\, and Tribal communities.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Trump\, Twitter and Fake News: How Journalists Can Build Credibility by Opening Up Their Work
DESCRIPTION:Free and open to the public. \nDoors open at 2 p.m. Seating is on a first-come basis. \nQuestions about the event\, email: WallaceHouseRSVP@umich.edu.\n\nEvent will be live webstreamed at https://wallacehouse.umich.edu/?p=8583.\n\nHow should the press adapt when those in power use the epithet “fake news” to attack real reporting? Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter\, David Fahrenthold of The Washington Post\, offers suggestions for both reporters and news consumers on navigating this new era. He will discuss how journalists can open up their own reporting process through social media\, show the public the work that underlies their stories and invite readers in as collaborators. \n\nDuring the 2016 presidential campaign\, Fahrenthold used social media to follow-up on Donald Trump’s pledge to donate money to veterans groups. Posting his reporter’s notes on Twitter to solicit leads\, Fahrenthold uncovered Trump’s questionable charitable practices and found no evidence that Trump donated money to veterans groups as he’d claimed. Fahrenthold was also the first reporter to reveal the existence of the “Access Hollywood” 2005 video in which Trump bragged about groping women. For his series of stories\, Fahrenthold won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.\n\nA graduate of Harvard\, Fahrenthold has been at The Washington Post since 2000. There he reports on President Trump’s businesses and conflicts of interest. He previously covered the Washington\, D.C.\, police\, the environment\, New England\, Congress and the federal bureaucracy for the paper.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE585 Graduate Seminar Series - The OSIRIS-REx Mission and The Mechanics of Asteroid Exploration
DESCRIPTION:On September 8\, 2016 the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft was launched on its voyage to the asteroid Bennu\, with which it will rendezvous in late 2018. The mission’s main goal is to collect samples from this primitive body and return them to Earth. Supporting scientific goals are to fully explore that asteroid’s physical and geophysical environment. The mission marks an important step in the continued robotic exploration of asteroids\, a larger endeavor motivated by the scientific study and exploration of the solar system and the protection of society against future hazardous asteroid impactors.\n\nTo carry out such endeavors involves significant challenges for the dynamics and control of spacecraft. For example\, the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft at Bennu will implement an entirely new approach to orbital mechanics in the asteroid environment. The successful implementation of these close proximity operations will usher in a new capability for the exploration of these bodies. \n\nThis talk will discuss the technical challenges and state of the art of spacecraft operations in the asteroid environment. It will also give a preview of the OSIRIS-REx mission and discuss the extreme and exciting orbital dynamics environment in which that spacecraft will operate.\n \nAbout the speaker...\nDaniel J. Scheeres is a University of Colorado Distinguished Professor and is the A. Richard Seebass Endowed Chair Professor in the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado Boulder. He currently leads the Radio Science experiment on NASA’s OSIRIS-REx mission. Prior to this he held faculty positions in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan and Iowa State University\, and was a Senior Member of the Technical Staff in the Navigation Systems Section at the California Institute of Technology’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He was awarded PhD. (1992)\, M.S.E. (1988) and B.S.E (1987) degrees in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan\, and holds a B.S. in Letters and Engineering from Calvin College (1985). Scheeres is a member of the National Academy of Engineering\, and a Fellow of both the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Astronautical Society. He was awarded the Dirk Brouwer Award from the American Astronautical Society in 2013 and gave the John Breakwell Lecture at the 2011 International Astronautical Congress. Asteroid 8887 is named “Scheeres” in recognition of his contributions to the scientific understanding of the dynamical environment about asteroids.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Carol Myers-Scotton
DESCRIPTION:The abstract nature of morpheme types with evidence from contact phenomena\n\nThis presentation suggests that recognizing differences at the abstract level in morpheme types offers some explanations for differences in their distribution in language contact phenomena. The level at which morpheme types are elected may affect their distribution in surface level constructions\; that is\, there is a contrast between morphemes that convey more semantic/pragmatic information from those realizing hierarchical structures. Such differences may also lie behind the preferences for selecting one language over another in some structures in some bilingual data. I look especially at codeswitching\, but also consider examples from borrowing across languages and discuss briefly mixed languages and creole development. I will be referring to an Asymmetry Principle and the Matrix Language Frame (MLF) model\, but more to the 4-M model of morpheme classification. I will present several hypotheses that seem to explain some surface distributions.

SUMMARY:Other:Design and Redesign of Sustainable Engineered Nanomaterials
DESCRIPTION: Engineered nanoparticles are increasingly being incorporated into devices and products across a variety of commercial sectors – this means that engineered nanoscale materials will either intentionally or unintentionally be released into the ecosystem. The long-term goal of the presented work is to understand the molecular design rules that control nanoparticle toxicity using aspects of materials science (nanoparticle design\, fabrication\, and modification)\, analytical chemistry (developing new assays to monitor nanotoxicity)\, and ecology (monitoring how nanoparticles enter and accumulate in the food web through bacteria and how these nanoparticles influence bacterial function). Taken together\, these data suggest that careful consideration of engineered nanoparticle surface chemistry will likely allow design of safe and sustainable nanoscale materials. \n \n \n \n \n \n \nChristy Haynes (University of Minnesota)

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar: Self- and species recognition in brood parasitic birds
DESCRIPTION:Avian brood parasites have provided a long-standing and popular model system for the experimental analysis of self- and species-recognition\, which are essential for most critical aspects of social behavior. Specifically\, when faced with a nest containing own and foreign eggs\, the foremost question is how individuals discriminate themselves (their own eggs) from others (foreign eggs) by utilizing each of their recognition system’s components: perception\, cognition\, and response. An overview of advances in the experimental analyses of hosts' egg rejection behaviors is presented here. Such studies provide detailed information for our understanding of the evolutionary impacts of parasitic birds on hosts’ cognitive processes and behavioral outcomes in the context of self- and species-recognition.\n\nView YouTube video of seminar: https://youtu.be/-HhMUOx_aIg

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Death Around the Palace of Nestor
DESCRIPTION:The palace of Pylos constituted the largest regional economic center in southwestern Greece during the Bronze Age (16th- 12th centuries B.C.) with evidence for high levels of craft specialization\, production\, and control of towns in the surrounding areas\, and for a strict political hierarchy. As the earliest constructed\, longest lived\, and best preserved Mycenaean palace\, Pylos holds a unique position in Late Bronze Age archaeology with audience halls\, archive rooms\, stunning wall paintings\, and thousands of Linear B tablets. The archaeological data from the cemeteries also sets it apart from the other palaces: Pylos is the only palace with cemeteries nearby that have been excavated using modern methods and are well-recorded. Yet\, to date the vast richness of data available in the tombs has not been mined fully. Through a detailed examination of the tombs and their contents my study changes our understanding of how the Pylian state was formed\; it elucidates how Pylos differed from other Mycenaean societies\; it refines the complex relationship between Pylos and the greater Mediterranean world\; and it demonstrates how the community manipulated funerary rituals to create social prestige and power.

DESCRIPTION:Monica Youn is the author of three books of poetry: Blackacre (Graywolf Press\, 2016)\; Barter(Graywolf Press\, 2003)\; and Ignatz (Four Way Books\, 2010)\, which was a finalist for the National Book Award. A former attorney\, she now teaches poetry at Princeton University and at the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers. She previously taught at Bennington College\, Columbia University\, and at the Sarah Lawrence College MFA Program. Youn’s poetry has been described as “interested in the intersection between the beauty we want in life\, and the darkness that often serves as an invisible barrier for it\,” with her background in law allowing her to “probe and navigate these gray areas gently\, using an economy of language that both cuts to the heart of the matter and reveals nuanced layers of caution\, lust\, and desperation.”\n\nOne of the most prolific American writers of the 20th century\, Joyce Carol Oates counts historical biographies\, depictions of working class families\, and magical realist Gothic fiction among her oeuvre. She often depicts hardships and violence in American towns\, and has received both critical and popular acclaim in her 50-year career. Oates is the author of over 70 books\, including the novels them (1969)\, winner of the National Book Award\; Bellefleur (1980)\; You Must Remember This (1987)\; Because It Is Bitter\, and Because It Is My Heart (1990)\; We Were the Mulvaneys (1996)\; Blonde (2000)\, winner of the National Book Award\; The Gravedigger’s Daughter (2007)\; and The Accursed (2013). Her short stories and essays have appeared in the New York Times\, the Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, and Harper’s\, and have been widely anthologized. In an interview for the Paris Review\, she says: “I try to write books that can be read in one way by a literal-minded reader\, and in quite another way by a reader alert to symbolic abbreviation and parodistic elements. And yet\, it's the same book—or nearly. A trompe l'oeil\, a work of ‘as if.’”

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Feast of Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes the reason is\, you’re not as clever as you think you are\, and you make bad decisions. Conventional wisdom dictates that the more we know about the problems and opportunities we face\, the better our decisions about them will be. Sadly\, this conventional wisdom tends not to be terribly wise. Over the course of this talk\, Professor Árvai will try to convince you that the more we can learn about how we actually make decisions\, the better we’ll be at it.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Feast of Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Pleasure “liking” is an essential psychological function for well-being\, and incentive “wanting” can normally give zest to life. Yet in addiction\, these processes go awry. Recent findings indicate that “liking” for intense pleasure is generated by a frail and tiny network in the brain\, whereas “wanting” for pleasures has a much more robust and larger brain generating network. In addiction\, hyper-reactive brain systems can create intense “wants” even in absence of any “liking.”

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Feast of Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Choosing the right medication for someone is often based on prescriber preference and not what might be most effective for the patient. This practice often leads to a trial and error sort of practice for finding a medication that works. The field of pharmacogenomics occurs at the intersection of genetics\, pharmacology\, and clinical pharmacy. Using data from a patient’s genetic analysis\, clinicians are able to better predict which medication to use for certain gene/drug pairs\, which may lead to fewer medication-related side effects\, and overall better treatment outcomes. To do this currently\, all patients would need to undergo this testing\, which can be very expensive. Therefore\, working to better identify those patients who would benefit from this testing the most needs to be done.

A trompe l'oeil\, a work of ‘as if.’”\nUMMA is pleased to be the site for the Zell Visiting Writers Series\, which brings outstanding writers each semester. The Series is made possible through a generous gift from U-M alumna Helen Zell (AB ’64\, LLDHon ’13). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Feast of Ideas
DESCRIPTION:It is increasingly recognized that exposure to chemical\, nutritional\, and behavioral factors alters gene expression and affects health and disease by not only mutating promoter and coding regions of genes\, but also by modifying the epigenome — modifications to DNA that confer an additional layer of heritable gene regulation that lead to disease when deregulated. Using examples from animal models\, human clinical samples\, and human population studies we will examine how many common compounds\, such as bisphenol A (BPA)\, plasticizers\, and metals\, may have deleterious consequences through abnormal epigenetic and genetic regulation. We will also discuss how unlike genetic mutations\, which are static and non-modifiable\, epigenetic programming is dynamic and potentially modifiable\, allowing for intervention approaches to improve health.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Feast of Ideas
DESCRIPTION:Can mathematics help us understand\, predict\, and control infectious disease spread? Mathematical modeling is a rapidly growing area of infectious disease epidemiology with growing impact on decision-making and policy. In this talk\, Professor Eisenberg will explore how mathematical models can be used to help forecast and design control strategies in the context of cholera\, a waterborne intestinal infection that causes 3-5 million cases/year and over 100\,000 deaths/year. She will discuss recent work modeling cholera epidemics in Haiti\, Angola\, and in Maela refugee camp in Thailand. She will examine some of the challenges when connecting models with data\, and talk about some of the new developments in blending mathematics\, statistics\, and computation to improve public health.

SUMMARY:Other:1st Reading Group of the Year
DESCRIPTION: We are pleased to announce the first reading group of the year will take place on Thursday\, October 26\, at 7 pm. Prof. O'Shea has graciously offered to host it at his house (2851 Whippoorwill Ln 48103\, see attached map). We are aware that there is an AIA talk wrapping up around 7pm so feel free to show up late if needed. We usually hang out and have some beverages for a period of time before talking anyway! For those of you who are new or didn't make it to a reading group meeting last year\, these are basically relaxed environments for us to talk about topics/theories/methodologies that are applicable to many members of CAW. The topic to start us off this year will be Network Analysis. Attached are two relatively short introductions to the topic that can be our launching point to further discussion (including one by Michigan's own Prof. Bob Whallon.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Feast of Ideas
DESCRIPTION:On Feb. 20\, at 63 locations across the globe\, local groups presented performances under the banner of “Nasty Women and Bad Hombres.” The date was chosen to coincide with President’s Day\, rebranded in this case as “Not My President’s Day.” Borrowing tactics from decentralized and radically inclusive strategies of previous protest moments\, the four originators worked to create a framework that could be adapted to fit the concerns and capacities of the local organizers. In this presentation\, Professor Hughes will discuss the ongoing efforts in the context of other artist-driven protest movements.

DESCRIPTION:Sepsis\, when bacteria (bugs) get into the bloodstream\, is a severe illness that requires hospitalization and intensive care. Presently\, understanding of sepsis is limited\, which has made its treatment very challenging. In fact\, presently\, there are no effective drug treatments for sepsis. We are using the measurement of small molecules (signals) in the blood to better understand sepsis and determine how changes in the levels of these signals reflect response to drugs. This field called metabolomics\, is also helping us identify new drug target opportunities so we can find new and effective treatments for sepsis.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Feast of Ideas
DESCRIPTION:The central dogma is the hallmark of genetic transmission and molecular biology. The fundamental processing of DNA to RNA\, via transcription\, and RNA to protein\, via translation\, drives all cellular activities and its imbalance leads to disease. While efforts in drug discovery tend to take a more protein-centric view of the central dogma\, whereby the great majority of approved drugs target proteins\, through this presentation\, Professor Garner will try to convince you that we’ve got it all wrong. In this presentation\, she will describe new ways that U-M faculty are seeking to tackle this last frontier in drug discovery and decipher how to selectively target specific RNAs with small molecules for the treatment of human diseases.

DESCRIPTION:Parents are told many things they should be doing to ensure their children have good nutrition and avoid becoming obese. Don’t let children drink soda\, but don’t be overly restrictive. Don’t talk about your child’s weight\, but make sure they’re not too heavy. The question is – which of these recommendations does scientific evidence support? This presentation will provide insight into the state of the childhood obesity science with regard to parenting\, and raise awareness of what we do\, and do not\, know about how to support healthy children.
