Professor Poskovic’s creative practice considers a range of technologies as a way to explore certain characteristics of printed image: translation\, multiplicity\, seriality. Through his works\, Professor Poskovic seeks to construct representations that suggest broader themes of displacement\, exile\, memory and reconciliation. A frequent visitor to China\, Endi Poskovic\, Professor of Art at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, is a great admirer of Chinese and Asian visual and material arts. Poskovic’s work in woodblock relief printmedia reflects his deep fascination and a lasting involvement with Chinese intellectual and creative communities. To celebrate this long and fruitful engagement as a bridge between artistic China and the University of Michigan\, CIUM presents this exhibition.\n\nOver the course of years\, Poskovic has produced several major series of multi-plate color woodcut prints utilizing both established and non-traditional approaches frequently combining analog carving methods with laser engraving from bit-map data files. For this Confucius Institute sponsored exhibition\, Poskovic presents an intimate selection of color woodcuts from two series of works\, “Majestic” and “Dream”\, focusing on landscape imagery informed by real and imaginary topographies\, including several works which are based on his sketches drawn in China. Merging visual image with text\, Poskovic’s “Majestic Series” shifts the reading of the woodcut by providing an unexpected new context and forcing the viewer to continually reinterpret. In “Dream Series”\, Poskovic explores primitive strategies of early cinema to investigate personal and social histories\, shifting cultural identities\, environmental transformation\, migration and alienation.\n\nEndi Poskovic was educated in Yugoslavia\, Norway\, and the United States. The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond.\n\nThe late medieval German lands teemed with innovation. Novel forms of piety emerged\, the demand for practical learning grew\, more universities competed for students\, and wealth from both trade and mining transformed social relations. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi. What did colonialism have to do with new social formations\, scales of war\, and forms of exploitation--that arose beyond the direct reach of colonizers? Did the Atlantic slave trade (which reached well into the Indian Ocean)\, or the Atlantic trade more generally\, bear strongly on relationships within and among indigenous polities distant from the colonial ports? Can proper history be written by \"reorienting\" the field to center the interior places of the continent(s)\, keeping the colonizers at the periphery? Do concepts such as \"frontier\,\" \"hybridity\,\" and \"nation\,\" obscure or reflect reality?\n \nBut for all the commonality\, the fields remain mostly ignorant of one another. This paper seeks to put historians of Eastern Native North America in conversation with South Africanists. He is well known as a pioneer in multicore processor design and for leading the Stanford Hydra chip multiprocessor (CMP) project which developed one of the first chip multiprocessors with support for thread-level speculation (TLS). Olukotun founded Afara Websystems to develop high-throughput\, low-power multicore processors for server systems. The Afara multicore processor\, called Niagara\, was acquired by Sun Microsystems and Niagara-derived processors now power all Oracle SPARC-based servers.\n\nOlukotun currently directs the Stanford Pervasive Parallelism Lab (PPL)\, which seeks to proliferate the use of heterogeneous parallelism in all application areas using Domain Specific Languages (DSLs). Firms use the consumer’s rating—an aggregate measure of her purchase history—to learn about the consumer’s type\, and thus set prices. The focus is on linear Markov equilibria when ratings discount past purchases exponentially. We find that equilibrium prices are lower in expectation than in a static benchmark due to the strategic effect of privacy concerns. The precision of the information conveyed in equilibrium by a rating is non-monotone in its persistence level. Firms may prefer more persistent ratings than under public histories\, whereas high-value consumers may prefer more or less persistent ratings to uninformative ratings. Total surplus is instead maximized by uninformative ratings. Finally\, hidden ratings that are not observed by the consumer reduce the sensitivity of demand and increase the firms’ profits. It is of particular clinical interest due to its implications for cancer treatment. It has been shown that the necrotic core within a tumor can induce local\, 5 to 10 fold increases in the potassium concentration\, which has been shown to inhibit immune cell function. However\, the development of this hyperkalemic state\, including rate\, extent\, and distribution\, are not characterized and have strong therapeutic implications. We developed a potassium nanosensor that is capable of performing as a functional photoacoustic contrast agent. The optode is based on the principle of Donnan exclusion in which a pH sensitive dye deprotonates when a potassium ionophore chelates a potassium ion. Our sensor is multimodal\, and has been calibrated for absorption\, fluorescence\, and photoacoustic read-out modes over biologically relevant potassium concentrations: 1mM to 100mM for photoacoustics and 20mM to 1M for fluorescence. The sensor shows exquisite selectivity over common interfering ions\, such as sodium\, magnesium\, and calcium. By introducing primary amines to the surface of the sensor\, we have been able to functionalize and target the sensor\, both passively through the Enhanced Permeability and Retention effect and actively via the attachment of the tumor-homing F3 peptide. Our Team builds systems to monitor and control chronic diseases in underserved communities. We develop and produce low-cost\, physician-tested technologies for personal health assessment. With community partners\, we design and build convenient\, transportable health-stations that meet local needs. Our solutions harness the existing manufacturing\, communication\, and transportation infrastructure. B. White\, than to linguists. When it comes to physics\, people turn to physicists as the experts to consult on the topic\; when it comes to language\, people often turn to experts without training in linguistics. How\, then\, can those with linguistics expertise effectively intervene in a public discourse where nonstandard varieties are still regularly denigrated and standard varieties are referred to as “good English” or just “English”?\n This talk\, focused on the U.S. context\, considers the ideologies that linguists and non-linguists share and don’t share about standard and nonstandard varieties\, “grammar\,” and prescriptive rules about what constitutes “good usage” in order to map potential shared conversational ground and productive strategies for addressing misunderstandings and misinformation. I assess language linguists have used to talk about prescriptivism with non-experts and analyze the language of public responses to descriptivist arguments.
