The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond.\n\nThe late medieval German lands teemed with innovation. Novel forms of piety emerged\, the demand for practical learning grew\, more universities competed for students\, and wealth from both trade and mining transformed social relations. Elaborating upon visual references to the art-historical canon of North America\, Hegarty repurposes the ideological tenets of such works into a critical examination of the American legacy.\n\nThe show’s title\, American Berserk\, is borrowed from Philip Roth’s Pulitzer-winning novel American Pastoral\, in which he defines the inverse of the American pastoral ideal as the “indigenous American Berserk.” The show includes a group of ceramic sculptures and a mixed-media site-specific sculpture jutting from the wall. Hegarty’s anarchic\, revisionist take on American history as manifested in the nation’s artistic legacy is embodied in her fantastical works. The sculptures\, which seem imported from a parallel universe\, include watermelons that become animated\, explode and then decay\, sly depictions of George Washington as a series of topiaries\, spectral clipper ships sinking and calcifying into shells\, a branch breaking through the wall and piercing a painting of George Washington making his nose appear to grow and a duo of “fruit face” personae that survey the surreal proceedings.\n\nNote: This grouping of works is an edited restaging of the original show that was initially presented at Burning in Water gallery in New York in 2016. These systems enable a wide variety of missions\, including crewed missions to near-Earth asteroids and Mars. Hall thrusters are a particularly attractive technology for these missions\, but development and demonstration of 100-kW class devices has been limited to date. Here\, a 100-kW class three-channel nested Hall thruster called the X3 was operated up to 102 kW total discharge power at NASA Glenn Research Center. The thruster demonstrated stable operation in all seven channel combinations at discharge voltages from 300 V to 500 V and three different current densities. All seven channel combinations demonstrated similar performance at a given discharge voltage and current density. The largest thrust recorded was 5.4 N\, and total efficiency and specific impulse ranged from 0.54 to 0.67 and 1800 seconds to 2650 seconds\, respectively. In addition to the performance measurements\, a suite of plasma diagnostics and a high-speed camera were used to study the operation of the thruster in greater detail. This work represents the highest total power (102 kW)\, thrust (5.4 N)\, and discharge current (247 A) demonstrated by a Hall thruster to date\, improvements of 6%\, 64%\, and 119% respectively over previous values. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. In this talk\, Kerstin Barndt shares new findings about the genesis of the collections in Michigan’s nineteenth century geological surveys and global collection expeditions\, and about the role of the U-M museums in Michigan’s state formation.\n\nDrawing comparisons with paradigmatic university museums in the US and in Europe\, she concentrates on the life cycle of particular collections and highlights their important role in the disciplinary and historical self-understanding of the university. How do individuals affectively engage with moral stimuli\, and to what extent do they regulate emotion in moral contexts? To examine these questions\, I take a multilevel approach\, using both behavioral measures and functional neuroimaging across a wide developmental age range. In particular\, I focus on everyday moral decision-making\, as it is a context where individuals must balance their emotional responses with internalized moral norms. These factors make it an area where emotion regulation occurs both naturally and to varying degrees of success. Not if that bead is near a surface: rolling leads to translational motion\, as well as very strong flows around the bead\, even quite far away. These flows strongly couple the motion of nearby microrollers (rotating beads)\, which leads to a rich variety of collective effects. Using experiments in tandem with large-scale 3D simulations\, we have shown that driving a compact group of microrollers leads to a new kind of flow instability\, whose wavelength is controlled not by the driving torque or the fluid viscosity\, but a geometric parameter: the microroller's distance above the container floor. Furthermore\, under the right conditions\, stable\, compact clusters we term \"critters\" can emerge from the unstable interface. Our simulations and experiments suggest that these critters are a stable state of the system\, move much faster than individual rollers\, and quickly respond to a changing drive. We believe that critters are unique in that they are clusters which form only with hydrodynamic interactions\; no interparticle potentials are needed to create these structures. The Politics of Secrecy in the Age of Revolutions DESCRIPTION:Americans have recently been questioning the propriety of secrecy in government\, particularly in the legislative process. As partisan acrimony plumbs new depths\, public discussion has focused in no small part on the process by which laws are drafted\, debated\, and implemented. Though there are few formal rules on what work must be done in public view on Capitol Hill\, let alone in the White House\, there is a general expectation that a representative democracy requires a certain degree of publicity\, or transparency\, in its politics. This lecture will illuminate the origin of this belief\, rooting it in the late eighteenth century Age of Revolutions. As countries like the United States and France established representative republics\, the question of what should be done in public view\, versus what could legitimately be kept secret\, was central to shaping both understandings and implementations of representative democracy. Though still largely unresolved\, it is a question that remains at the heart of our conceptions of what a representative government is\, how it should work\, and what makes it legitimate. \n \nA growing concern with state secrecy permeated politics in the North Atlantic World during the latter half of the eighteenth century. Suspicion of government secrets became central to mounting critiques of monarchical and ministerial power in the French and British empires on the eve of the revolutions that would rock them. In the lecture\, the speaker will trace how the nascent republics in the United States and France contended with the mounting distrust of government secrecy as they set up new regimes that claimed to speak for the people. Debates over the proper place of secrecy in these new governments were immediately and intimately linked to evolving conceptions of what it meant for politics to be representative and\, especially\, what it meant for representative government to be democratic. More than simple procedural questions—over whether doors to legislative chambers would be open or closed\, for example—these debates about secrecy in politics were tantamount to contests over the meaning of representative government and how it would work during the American and French revolutionary periods. They laid the foundation for ongoing debates about how much transparency is required and tenable to sustain our representative democracy. \n \nKatlyn Carter is a Weiser Emerging Democracies Postdoctoral Fellow for the 2017-18 academic year. She completed her Ph.D. in history at Princeton University in 2017. Her current research is on state secrecy and representative politics in the eighteenth-century Atlantic World. As a postdoctoral fellow\, Katlyn will be working on a book manuscript about the relationship between state secrecy and the first representative democracies. She will also begin work on her next project\, which will examine the problem of truth and trust at the founding of the American and French republics. The project will aim to provide historical context to the challenge of dealing with fake news and determining fact from fiction in a political system governed by public opinion and with a free press. His recent work includes ‘Makoko Floating School’\, an innovative\, prototype\, floating structure located on the lagoon heart of Nigeria’s largest city\, Lagos. This acclaimed project is part of an extensive research project – ‘African Water Cities’. NLÉ is currently developing a number of urban\, research and architectural projects in Africa\; one of which is Chicoco Radio Media Center\; the amphibious building in Delta city of Port Harcourt in Nigeria.\nBorn and raised in Nigeria\, Adeyemi studied architecture at the University of Lagos where he began his early practice\, before joining the world renowned Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in 2002. At OMA\, working closely with founder Rem Koolhaas for nearly a decade\, he led the design\, development and execution of numerous projects in Europe\, Asia\, Africa and the Middle East. Among these projects were the award winning Samsung Museum of Art\, the Seoul National University Museum\, NM Rothschild Bank in London\, Shenzhen Stock Exchange tower in China\, Prada Transformer in South Korea\, Qatar National Library\, Qatar Foundation Headquarters and the 4th Mainland Bridge and master plan in Lagos. Adeyemi was responsible for critical stages in design and realization of these projects. This involved leading OMA’s design team\, coordinating a diverse global network of stakeholders and experts collaborators\, including Arup for Engineering and Davis Langdon (AECOM) on cost matters.\nThis memorial lecture was established to recognize John Dinkeloo's extraordinary contributions to architecture\, to honor his distinguished professional work\, and to pay tribute to this highly respected alumnus of the Architecture Program at the University of Michigan.
