DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

DESCRIPTION:CEW is leading a one-day Spectrum of Advocacy and Activism Symposium: Finding Your Voice focused on advocacy and activism training. This event will demonstrate how a person’s activism can change over time\, how advocacy is tied to a person’s context and situational power\, and how partnering with diverse perspectives can strengthen advocacy and activism efforts. Health outcomes has been selected as the theme for this year’s symposium because of increasing uncertainty surrounding health care in America\, including coverage for women’s health care (mental health\, mammograms\, birth control\, maternity care\, etc.).\n\nThe goals for this one-day symposium are:\n-to engage students\, practitioners\, and researchers who are interested in advocacy and activism\n-to equip symposium participants with advocacy training that can be applied to their area(s) of interest\n-to develop a network among attendees for potential partnerships beyond the symposium\n-to highlight the value of diverse perspectives in advocacy work.\n\nThe symposium includes presentations by local and national advocacy experts who have taken varied approaches to advocacy in ways that best leverage their current context (power\, privilege\, and identity). Training sessions will feature capacity-building workshops on a range of topics from community organizing to bystander intervention to running for political office. Afternoon panel discussions will offer practical strategies that attendees can apply to their own work as advocates and activists. At the end of the day\, participants will be presented with a common challenge that they will address in small groups comprised of individuals from campus and community.\n\nThe day will close out with a surprise special keynote speaker to be announced soon!\n\nThis free event will take place on Wednesday\, November 15\, 2017 at the Michigan League. DESCRIPTION:Since Ellie Harold started painting in 2003\, she has primarily been a landscape artist\, painting Michigan barns and lake shore scenes in oil. In November 2016\, following a trip to Mexico\, birds unexpectedly started migrating to her canvases and an entirely new body of work began to take shape. The current exhibit\, Flights of Fancy\, features birds in colorful\, light-filled works. The birds represent the lightness she associates with qualities of joy\, hope\, healing and inspiration she sees as a source of personal well-being.

DESCRIPTION:Steve and Ann Loveless both grew up in northwestern lower Michigan and love the nature and beauty of the outdoors. Steve is a fine art photographer\, and Ann is a textile artist. After exhibiting some of Ann’s textile designs inspired by Steve’s photography\, they had the idea to create works that morph a photograph into a textile. One aspect of the process is that it can trick the viewer into questioning what they are seeing and invite them to engage more with the work. Northwood Awakening\, a 25 by 5 foot piece that was the ArtPrize 2015 Public Vote Grand Prize winner\, will be on display.

DESCRIPTION:Laura Cavanagh is a Michigan native who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a BFA in Art & Design and a minor in Art History. Cavanagh’s work consists primarily of cut paper and mixed media. Working with these materials allows her to approach her work in much the same way a sculptor does: adding to and cutting away from. Cavanagh finds the artistic process to be deeply meditative. Cavanagh lives and has her studio in a historic home in downtown Rochester\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Cat Crotchett’s current work combines elements of eastern and western cultural patterns in fragments that together form something different than their individual parts. These images represent an intersection of information as well as ideas of cultural appropriation\, assimilation\, fragmentation and alteration. Crotchett uses wax because it is relevant to both eastern and early western artistic cultures. A professional artist for over 30 years\, Crotchett has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is a professor at Western Michigan University and lives in Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Professional artist and instructor Gregory Potter believes that anyone can develop artistic skill if they put the work into it. Potter’s teaching helps with that\, but he also shows his paintings in art fairs\, galleries and even Army barrack walls\, anywhere people enjoy art and laughing out loud. A flightless bird\, his flamingo isn’t deep or subversive\, but it does have a top hat and is riding on the back of a zebra that is standing in a nest powered by a propeller. Nothing unusual for a man who served four tours in the Middle East. Working in his home gallery in Franklin\, Indiana\, he is amused as viewers sometimes see his animals as “above all the B.S.” or “leaving without knowing where [they’re] going.”

DESCRIPTION:An installation of new work by U-M alumna Chanel Habsburg-Lothringen whose work addresses the American notion of aspiration\, mortality\, and persona.  Part of the Institute for the Humanities’ Year of Archives and Futures organized in celebration of the U-M Bicentennial.\n\nChanel Von Habsburg-Lothringen holds an MFA in photography from Cranbrook Academy of Art. From the University of Michigan\, she holds a BA in social science and history of art\, and is a graduate of the Residential College. Her previous exhibitions include “Conditions\,” ltd los angles\, and “Seduced & Abandoned\,\" Boyfriends\, Chicago\, IL. Her films have been screened at the Detroit Independent Film Festival and Royal Albert Hall. She is the recipient of the Toby Devin Lewis Award and the Warren and Margot Coville Scholarship. She was the co-founder of EMBASSY and has curated projects at Los Angeles Museum of Art\, Detroit Design Festival\, the Mike Kelley Mobile Homestead and Cranbrook Museum of Art.

DESCRIPTION:Highlighting manuscripts and early printed books from the Special Collections Library\, the exhibit commemorates the 500th anniversary of a pivotal transformation in world history. In 1517\, Martin Luther\, a professor of theology and a monk\, published his scathing critique of indulgences\, a church practice that allowed Christians to buy off time from suffering for one’s sins in the afterlife.\n\nIssued in the provincial town of Wittenberg\, Luther's call for academic debate and reform unleashed a series of events that led to the break-up of Latin Christianity. The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond.\n\nThe late medieval German lands teemed with innovation. Novel forms of piety emerged\, the demand for practical learning grew\, more universities competed for students\, and wealth from both trade and mining transformed social relations. The dissemination of texts and ideas on an industrial scale via the printing press reshaped communication\, knowledge\, and belief. SUMMARY:Exhibition:American Berserk exhibition by Valerie Hegarty
DESCRIPTION:Throughout her career\, Brooklyn-based artist Valerie Hegarty has explored fundamental themes of American history and particularly the legacy of 19th-century American art\, addressing topics such as colonization\, slavery\, Manifest Destiny\, nationalism and environmental degradation. Elaborating upon visual references to the art-historical canon of North America\, Hegarty repurposes the ideological tenets of such works into a critical examination of the American legacy.\n\nThe show’s title\, American Berserk\, is borrowed from Philip Roth’s Pulitzer-winning novel American Pastoral\, in which he defines the inverse of the American pastoral ideal as the “indigenous American Berserk.” The show includes a group of ceramic sculptures and a mixed-media site-specific sculpture jutting from the wall. Hegarty’s anarchic\, revisionist take on American history as manifested in the nation’s artistic legacy is embodied in her fantastical works. The sculptures\, which seem imported from a parallel universe\, include watermelons that become animated\, explode and then decay\, sly depictions of George Washington as a series of topiaries\, spectral clipper ships sinking and calcifying into shells\, a branch breaking through the wall and piercing a painting of George Washington making his nose appear to grow and a duo of “fruit face” personae that survey the surreal proceedings.\n\nNote: This grouping of works is an edited restaging of the original show that was initially presented at Burning in Water gallery in New York in 2016.

DESCRIPTION:Focusing on the prominent role of women as the subject of photography\, GLOSS: Modeling Beauty explores the shifting ideals of female beauty that pervade European and American visual culture from the 1920s to today. The exhibition features images of sleek and poised female models and celebrities destined for the glossy pages of fashion magazines and catalogs by leading photographers such as Edward Steichen\, Philippe Halsman\, Helmut Newton\, Andy Warhol\, and Guy Bourdin. Outside of commercial advertising practice\, documentary photographers Elliott Erwitt\, Joel Meyerowitz\, and Ralph Gibson portray candid images of fashionable women on city streets and mannequins in shop windows\, resulting in intriguing juxtapositions of haute couture and everyday life. And\nartists James Van Der Zee\, Eduardo Paolozzi\, and Nikki S. Lee employ the visual strategies of traditional fashion photography\, while offering alternative narratives to mainstream notions of female beauty.\n\nLead support for Gloss: Modeling Beauty is provided by Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. DESCRIPTION:Moving Image: Portraiture presents a contemporary spin on traditional notions of portraiture. In the video Towards An Architect\, Hannu Karjalainen portrays a fictional architect who is experiencing the response of people living in the structures he designed. Daniel Rozin’s Mirror No. 10 is driven by software\, written by the artist\, that generates a real-time reflection of the environment the screen is displayed in—specifically a live sketch of the viewer approaching the frame. Mesocosm (Northumberland\, UK) is an algorithmic work by Marina Zurkow that depicts the passage of time on the moors of Northeast England.\n\nMoving Image: Portraiture is the third of three exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Borusan Contemporary\, Istanbul\, which since 2011 has been focused on media arts. The works in this series address both formal concerns and conceptual topics\; many represent traditional categories such as portraiture and landscape that find new resonance when explored through the strategies of dynamic technology.\n\nLead support for Moving Image: Portraiture is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Before colonization\, complex hierarchical societies flourished in Central and West Africa. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi. Drawing on works from UMMA’s collection and several loans\, the exhibition demonstrates how authority was expressed and power contained across a range of historical cultures in Nigeria\, Ghana\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon.\n\nLead support for Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:A Journey to Making an Ideal Violin
DESCRIPTION:A renowned violin-maker Feng Jiang will present his journey of violin-making. After a brief biographical sketch of his education and violin-making experiences\, he will delve into what is behind constructing a master level violin as well as how to appreciate them. He will also explain the traditional violin ​schools of style\, how to appreciate violins\, what is an “ideal” violin\, and some modern ​violin-making ​techniques that help makers of his generation​​ to ​better ​understand ​​this intricate wooden box that makes music.\n\nWith exquisite workmanship and a tone combined with power and nuance\, Feng Jiang‘s instruments are used by some of the world’s most demanding musicians. Jiang Feng was born a second generation violin-maker. Mr. Feng studied violin making at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. His instruments have been invited to prestigious exhibitions such as the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis\, the Klanggestalten Exhibition in Berlin\, and the Singer-Polignac Foundation in Paris. In 2012\, he was honored to receive the Double Gold Medal for the ​violin’s workmanship and tone at the Violin Society of America’s Competition.

DESCRIPTION:This event features Tania (Nguyen) LaViolet\, PhD\, senior program manager at Aspen Institute's College Excellence Program and the American Talent Initiative (ATI) and Dr. Bill Pink\, president of Grand Rapids Community College. \n\nAccording to indicators from the Beginning Postsecondary Student Survey\, each year\, there are approximately 51\,000 lower-income\, high-achieving community college students who do not transfer to a four-year institution. With an estimated 80% of community college students intending to transfer\, researchers at Aspen and Ithaka S+R hosted over 25 research calls with two-year and four-year institutions to understand:\n\n-The challenges four-year institutions face in enrolling and supporting community college students.\n-What practices have been successful in cultivating relationships with community colleges to support enrollment\, graduation\, and holistic success of transfer students.\n\nThis work builds on The Transfer Playbook\, which Aspen published last year in collaboration with the Community College Research Center. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar: Energy Transfer in Compressible Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence
DESCRIPTION:Compressibility\, magnetic fields and turbulence are all thought to be important factors to varying degrees in many astrophysical processes and terrestrial experiments. However\, our understanding of their joint effect even in its simplest description\, i.e. compressible magnetohydrodynamic turbulence\, is still scarce.  One step towards a more comprehensive picture is a better understanding of the governing energy dynamics – looking at the interplay between kinetic and magnetic energy via different mediators such as advection\, magnetic tension or magnetic pressure.  In this talk\, we present an extension of established shell-to-shell energy transfer analysis methods to the compressible MHD regime. We apply this analysis to numerical simulations in the subsonic and supersonic regime. These methods allow us to illustrate how varying degrees of compressibility influence the energy dynamics within and between kinetic and magnetic energy reservoirs. For example\, we show that compression acts against a magnetic energy cascade (scale-local magnetic to magnetic energy transfer). SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:ASP Lecture | Biopolitics and Life-Writing among Ottoman Armenians: The Sacred Life of Zabel Yesayan
DESCRIPTION:The Cilician massacres in 1909 were a moment in the newly emerging political landscape that affected not only the lives of Armenians in the region\, but the entire Armenian community in the Ottoman state. This talk explores the (bio) political meaning of the dehumanization of Armenians with its focus on the personal experiences of the Ottoman Armenian writer and activist\, Zabel Yesayan. If biopolitics can be defined as the management of lives by new power mechanisms that deprive people of human agency\, then how are we to understand the category of the biopoliticized life? Can a ‘biopoliticized life’ speak for itself\, for its reduction to a state of bodily existence\, for its own death? \n\nIn relation to the loss of one’s political and everyday life\, this talk concentrates on the paradox of the making of the modern biopoliticized subject\, which materializes in an alternative and radical form of life-writing. Emphasizing the ways one engages with life-writing\, which Dr. Aktokmakyan calls ‘auto-bio-thanato-graphy\,’ the talk examines the ‘non-sovereign’ quality in Yesayan’s \"Among the Ruins\" to reframe a theory of agency and body politics\, as well as the notion of the political in the Western Armenian literature. \n\nMaral Aktokmakyan earned her PhD in Western Languages and Literature from Boğaziçi University in 2016. She specializes in modern Western Armenian literature with her Master’s Thesis on female literary styles and discourses in the works of Serpouhi Dussap and Charlotte Brontë. She is currently working on the literary representations of biopolitical reductions with a particular emphasis on the Ottoman Armenians before and after the Genocide. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | The Physics and Applications of 2D and 3D Organic Heterojunctions
DESCRIPTION:Recently\, we introduced a comprehensive theory of carrier recombination and energy transport at organic and hybrid organic/inorganic semiconductor heterojunctions (OI-HJ).[1] The OI-HJ has been found to play an important role in numerous devices in photodetection and energy power conversion. By developing a quantum mechanical model of the hybrid charge transfer exciton (HCTE) that is the intermediate between exciton generation and charge collection\, we have been successful in understanding the behavior of several organic/III-V semiconductor OI-HJs.[2]  More recently\, we have extended this analysis to quantify the behavior of a new class of OI-HJs: those comprising a very thin film organic layered on a 2D transition metal dichalcogenide monolayer. For this latter purpose\, we have fabricated an organic/WS2 OI-HJ photodetector used to elaborate the charge and energy transport across these limited dimensional systems.[3] In this talk\, we will discuss the theoretical framework of HCTE dynamics\, along with measurement of its properties and its application to photodetection and other optoelectronic systems consisting of combinations of excitonic and conventional semiconductors.\n\n[1]	C. The educational system\, from kindergarten to university\, still suffers from the Pol Pot regime. \n\nThe high cost affiliated with sending a child to school in Cambodia makes many poor families struggle to educate their children. The students who make it through high school and enroll at university also face a number of challenges. After spending years learning by memorizing they are suddenly expected to learn by exploring and independently searching for new knowledge. This leads to significant problems with plagiarism and poor performance as well as stress and lowered self-esteem amongst students.  \n\nTo support learning and wellbeing\, from kindergarten to university\, we need resources as well as knowledge. Private donors\, companies\, researchers\, and educators worldwide have an important role to play in Cambodia’s development. The challenge is to embrace a holistic perspective. The current challenges are looming so large that no isolated intervention would be able to solve them. Instead we need mindful engagement where every stakeholder gets the best possible information to make a useful contribution.\n\nIn the talk\, Evelina will share her experience of creating a positive setting for learning and growth. She will talk about how the practice of mindful engagement and the strengths of gratitude\, teamwork and creativity pave the way forward\; regardless if the task at hand is making sure that a 7-year-old has enough nutrition to focus in class\, preventing a 15-year-old from dropping out of school to work in a factory\, or supporting a 21-year-old university student who didn’t sleep for days anxious about an approaching deadline.\n\nAbout Fredriksson:\nEvelina is an educator\, consultant\, journalist\, and author. She works with People Improvement Organization Cambodia\, serves on the board of the knowledge lab Inter Business Initiative\, is the co-founder of the boutique consultancy Lumen Behavior\, and teaches at Zaman University Cambodia and Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia. \n\nEvelina has extensive experience with sustainability reporting and applied research. Her main area of expertise is children’s and women’s rights. She recently published a book based on interviews with girls and women in Phnom Penh and is currently conducting research about signature strengths amongst Cambodian students. \n\nOver the years\, Evelina has conducted research and has been writing about vulnerable children and women in\, for example\, Sweden\, Cambodia\, the Gambia\, India\, Senegal\, Kazakhstan\, and Zimbabwe. Evelina developed the grant making strategy for the family foundation Stenbeck Stiftelse that caters to children in need\, as well as leading the Reach for Change Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)\, which was one of the first GRI reports published globally for civil society organizations. DESCRIPTION:Title: Constrained Modeling of Experimental Data in Biofabrication\n\nSpeaker: Li Zeng\nAssistant Professor \nIndustrial and Systems Engineering\nTexas A&M University\n\nAbstract: Biofabrication is an emerging research field. Experimental data are often collected to understand the relationship between process parameters and product properties in this field. A special consideration in analyzing this type of data is that expert knowledge needs to be accommodated to make results meaningful. This talk will discuss two studies on statistical modeling of experimental data in biofabrication applications\, where different types of expert knowledge are incorporated in the form of constraints. In one study\, a constrained Gaussian process model is developed for biodegradation prediction in tissue-engineered scaffold fabrication\, and in the other study we propose a constrained varying-coefficient model for hydrogel property modeling in 3D printing of soft tissues.   \n\nBiography: Li Zeng is an Assistant Professor in the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department of Texas A&M University. She received her B.S. in Precision Instruments and M.S. in Optical Engineering from Tsinghua University\, China\, and M.S. in Statistics and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from University of Wisconsin-Madison. Before joining Texas A&M\, she was a faculty in the Industrial\, Manufacturing\, and Systems Engineering Department of the University of Texas at Arlington. DESCRIPTION:Kaoru Watanabe is a Brooklyn based composer and musician specializing in the Japanese taiko drum and shinobue flutes. He has spent decades artfully blending the sounds of Japanese instruments with those from around the world\, collaborating with such artists as National Living Treasure Bando Tamasaburo\, Jason Moran\, So Percussion\, Adam Rudolph\, Kenny Endo\, Stefon Harris\, Kiyohiko Semba\, Alicia Hall Moran\, Tamango\, calligrapher Kakinuma Koji\, visual artist Simone Leigh\, and director Martin Scorsese\, and was a featured guest on Yo-Yo Ma's Grammy Award-winning album Sing Me Home. \n\nAfter graduating from Manhattan School of Music with a BA in jazz flute and saxophone\, Watanabe moved to Japan and joined the world-renowned taiko performing arts ensemble Kodo\, the first non-Japanese to do so. He spent close to a decade performing with Kodo as well as acting as artistic director of their world music festival Earth Celebration\, where he curated works with such esteemed guests as Zakir Hussain\, Giovanni Hidalgo\, Carlos Nunez\, and Yosuke Yamashita.

DESCRIPTION:In 1971 British architectural historian P. Reyner Banham reacquainted the scholarly world with German geographer Anton Wagner's 1935 book Los Angeles: The Development\, Life\, and Form of the City of Two Million in Southern California. Based on extraordinary archival research\, field work\, and walks across the cityscape\, Wagner's encyclopedic study seeks to explain how a small town in a desert region located far from major transport routes and markets become a major metropolis.  No less fascinating than Wagner's geography of Los Angeles is his own biography\, a tale of travel and international scholarly collaborations set against the background of German-American relations in the twentieth century.\n\nEdward Dimendberg is Professor of Humanities and European Languages and Studies at the University of California\, Irvine.  He is author of Film Noir and the Spaces of Modernity (Harvard University Press\, 2004) and Diller Scofidio + Renfro: Architecture after Images (University of Chicago Press\, 2013) and a co-editor(with Anton Kaes and Martin Jay) of The Weimar Republic Sourcebook (University of California Press\, 1994).  He is currently completing a monograph entitled The Los Angeles Project: Architectural and Urban Theories of the City of Exception and editing critical edition of Los Angeles: The Development\, Life\, and Form of the City of Two Million in Southern California by Anton Wagner for publication by the Getty Research Institute.  Dimendberg serves on the editorial boards of the Weimar and Now German Cultural Criticism and FlashPoints book series\, on the Faculty Editorial Committee of the University of California Press\, and on the Book Publication Committee of the Modern Language Association.  He works with individual scholars and offers publishing workshops as the principal of Dimendberg Consulting LLC.

DESCRIPTION:WDI welcomes Maria Cavalcanti\, president and CEO of Pro Mujer – a nonprofit finance organization that has disbursed more than $3 billion in loans to mainly women-owned enterprises in Latin America – to its Global Impact Speaker Series at the University of Michigan next month.\n\nCavalcanti will discuss Pro Mujer’s business model\, which is centered on gender equity\, and take questions from attendees beginning at 5:30 p.m.\, Nov. 15 in room 1560 of Blau Hall at the Ross School of Business. The event is free and open to the public.\n\nPro Mujer was founded by Lynne Patterson and Carmen Velasco in Bolivia in 1990 to use microloans to support women-owned businesses. Today\, the organization works with entrepreneurs in that country as well as Argentina\, México\, Nicaragua and Peru. In 2015 alone\, Pro Mujer reported providing $330 million in loans to more than 250\,000 clients. Operating mainly in urban areas and regions just outside major cities\, Pro Mujer also provides direct and indirect health care services through a series of centers and clinics. Services include non-communicable disease detection\, dental care and ultrasound diagnostics.\n\nCavalcanti In early 2016\, Cavalcanti was named president and CEO of Pro Mujer. She has ambitious plans to expand the organization.\n\n“As we look ahead\, we are focused on amplifying our services and expanding our footprint\,” Cavalcanti said in an interview with NextBillion.net\, WDI’s affiliated media site focused on business solutions in low- and middle-income economies. “By leveraging partnerships and technology\, we are building Pro Mujer as a platform capable of serving millions at a time\; a one-stop shop for empowerment for women in the region.”\n\nCavalcanti holds an MBA from the University of Texas in Austin\, a master of science in Information Science from Columbia University in New York\, and a bachelor of arts from Universidade Federal do Ceará in Brazil. She is based in New York City\, where Pro Mujer is headquartered.

This lecture serves as the capstone event to the 2017 CEW Spectrum of Advocacy & Activism Symposium being held earlier in the day.\n\nLaverne Cox is an Emmy-nominated actress\, Emmy-winning producer and the first transgender woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show. As the 2017 Mullin Welch guest lecturer\, Laverne will be sharing her experiences as a trans woman of color\, and her work as an international advocate for human rights and gender equality.\n\nAs \"Sophia Burset\,\" an incarcerated African American transgender woman on “Orange is the New Black\,” Laverne is the first trans woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show. Along with several acting awards\, Laverne was notably the first trans woman to appear on the cover of TIME magazine. An accomplished producer and celebrated equal rights advocate\, she continues to drive positive change on a global scale as she shares her views on race\, class\, and gender with audiences through a range of platforms.\n\nLaverne projects a combination of strength and vulnerability in her presentations while delivering an animated reflection on the transgender experience. Her recollections of growing up in Mobile\, Ala.\, moving to New York City\, and finding the courage to step into womanhood illustrate the unique challenges faced by the transgender community. With a powerful and empowering message about self-acceptance and love\, Laverne moves audiences to respect and appreciate all individuals and advocate for positive change. \n\nThis lecture is made possible through the generous support of the CEW Frances & Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund and the CEW Mullin Welch Fund. DESCRIPTION:Karla Mallette\, director of the Islamic Studies Program and professor of Italian and Near Eastern Studies\, will lead a discussion of the wonderful classic of Islamic thought\, \"Hayy Ibn Yaqzan.\" Written by the 12th-century Andalusian genius\, Ibn Tufayl\, the Hayy is a philosophical novel that examines the human condition through the eyes of a child as he is raised by a doe on a desert island.\n\nThis event is open to the public. Participants are encouraged to read the novel prior to the meeting. The USO begins the concert with the Haydn-like humor of Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony\, and continues with Shostakovich's poignant portrayal of his suffering under Stalin's regime\, the autobiographical Chamber Symphony\, originally the 8th String Quartet.
