Elaborating upon visual references to the art-historical canon of North America, Hegarty repurposes the ideological tenets of such works into a critical examination of the American legacy.\r\n\r\nThe show\u2019s title, American Berserk, is borrowed from Philip Roth\u2019s Pulitzer-winning novel American Pastoral, in which he defines the inverse of the American pastoral ideal as the \u201cindigenous American Berserk.\u201d The show includes a group of ceramic sculptures and a mixed-media site-specific sculpture jutting from the wall. Hegarty\u2019s anarchic, revisionist take on American history as manifested in the nation\u2019s artistic legacy is embodied in her fantastical works. At their summits were a select few\u2014kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs, and covered in beads and precious metals, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning \u201cpower figure\u201d) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles, animal skin, metal, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king\u2019s physical body and minkisi. Traditional collective action approaches have largely downplayed or ignored the significant moral-emotional barriers to participation, particularly in the context of high-risk, violent movements. Dr. Javed argues that political actors can eliminate these barriers to participation in violence by leveraging popular morality to: 1) delineate new social boundaries within communities that separate the \"virtuous\" public from a \"morally degenerate\" minority; and 2) provoke popular outrage against members of this targeted group through the theatrical display of their alleged moral transgressions--violations of shared norms of right and wrong behavior. He will demonstrate this process of moral mobilization using the case of the Chinese Communist Party's mass mobilization of violence against so-called \"landlords\" and \"counterrevolutionaries\" during the first several years of the Maoist period (1949-1953). \r\n \r\nJeffrey Javed is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on the intersection of social mobilization and political violence, with a secondary focus on moral governance and memory politics. His current book project explores the process by which the nascent Chinese state mobilized popular participation in state repression during the mass campaigns of the early 1950s. In the presence of homophily, attributes of one's friends are predictive of one's own attributes, which is classically exploited by methods aimed at predicting missing attributes. While weak homophily might suggest that attribute prediction is difficult, in this work we find a common pattern of extreme preferences for attributes that introduce friend-of-friend or two-hop correlations, where individuals are similar to their friends-of-friends without necessarily being similar to their friends. We call this property monophily for ``love of one.'' We contribute a joint characterization of the statistical structure of homophily and monophily in terms of preference bias and preference variance and demonstrate how homophily-based prediction methods based on friends, ``the company you keep,'' are fundamentally different from monophily-based methods based on friends-of-friends, ``the company you're kept in.'' As part of this work we contribute a new stylized model of social network structure that we call the overdispersed stochastic block model, where the intensity of homophily and monophily can be independently modified to simulate networks with realistic preference bias and variance. To illustrate the differences between homophily and monophily-based prediction, we place particular focus on gender prediction on social networks, where homophily can be weak or nonexistent in practice. Yet we also demonstrate that in settings where homophily is present, such as the link structure of political blogs, monophily is also present and can power methods that outperform homophily-only methods for prediction. These findings offer an alternative perspective on attribute prediction in general and gender in particular, complicating the already difficult task of protecting attribute privacy on social networks.\r\n\r\nBio:\r\nJohan Ugander is an Assistant Professor at Stanford University in the Department of Management Science & Engineering, within the School of Engineering. many important technological applications in fields such as energy storage, separations, and catalysis. By changing the structure of the molecules or employing mixtures, the properties of these fluids can be altered significantly. The key questions are: How should I change the structure of the molecule or ion to get the properties I want? What type of additives should I use to improve performance? To answer these and related questions, we use atomistic-level simulations to compute structural, thermodynamic and transport properties of these systems. We are able to provide molecular-level explanations for experimental observations, and we can predict properties of systems that may not yet have even been made in the laboratory.\r\n\r\nIn the first part of this talk, I will describe molecular modeling research directed at improving the performance of electrolytes used in next generation \u201cbeyond lithium\u201d batteries. Electrolytes are a critical component of batteries, since they transport ions from the cathode to the anode during charging, then in the reverse direction in releasing energy on discharge. Electrolytes play a leading role in a battery\u2019s capacity for energy storage, its lifetime and the safety of the battery. The electrolyte in a conventional lithium-ion battery consists of a lithium salt dissolved in an organic solvent. The electrolytes for next generation \u201cbeyond lithium\u201d batteries will require new salt-solvent combinations. \u00a0Our simulations probe the way in which different electrolyte formulations, charge carriers and additives impact the structure and dynamics of these liquids.\r\n\r\nIn the second half of the talk, I will show how these same kinds of simulations can be used to develop new ionic liquids that can be used for CO2 separations \/ capture. Ionic liquids are pure salts that are liquid at ambient temperatures. Because they have essentially no vapor pressure and readily dissolve CO2, people have been interested in using them for carbon capture. I will describe how our simulations have been successful in identifying new ionic liquids with properties tuned for use as conventional liquid absorbents or as supported ionic liquid membranes.\r\n\r\nBio: Edward Maginn received his BS in chemical engineering from Iowa State University and his PhD in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to attending graduate school, he worked as a process engineer for Procter and Gamble. He has been on the Notre Dame faculty since 1995 and currently holds the Dorini Family Chair of Energy Studies in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. These systems enable a wide variety of missions, including crewed missions to near-Earth asteroids and Mars. Hall thrusters are a particularly attractive technology for these missions, but development and demonstration of 100-kW class devices has been limited to date. Here, a 100-kW class three-channel nested Hall thruster called the X3 was operated up to 102 kW total discharge power at NASA Glenn Research Center. The thruster demonstrated stable operation in all seven channel combinations at discharge voltages from 300 V to 500 V and three different current densities. All seven channel combinations demonstrated similar performance at a given discharge voltage and current density. The largest thrust recorded was 5.4 N, and total efficiency and specific impulse ranged from 0.54 to 0.67 and 1800 seconds to 2650 seconds, respectively. In addition to the performance measurements, a suite of plasma diagnostics and a high-speed camera were used to study the operation of the thruster in greater detail. This work represents the highest total power (102 kW), thrust (5.4 N), and discharge current (247 A) demonstrated by a Hall thruster to date, improvements of 6%, 64%, and 119% respectively over previous values. His historical epidemiological work has influenced strategies employed by the WHO, the CDC, and the Mexican Ministry of Health. \r\n \r\nDr. Markel is the author, co-author, or co-editor of ten books, including the award-winning Quarantine! and the national bestseller An Anatomy of Addiction. He has written over 450 articles and book chapters for scholarly and popular publications.
