SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Photography into Fiber: ArtPrize Winner
DESCRIPTION:Steve and Ann Loveless both grew up in northwestern lower Michigan and love the nature and beauty of the outdoors. Steve is a fine art photographer\, and Ann is a textile artist. After exhibiting some of Ann’s textile designs inspired by Steve’s photography\, they had the idea to create works that morph a photograph into a textile. One aspect of the process is that it can trick the viewer into questioning what they are seeing and invite them to engage more with the work. Northwood Awakening\, a 25 by 5 foot piece that was the ArtPrize 2015 Public Vote Grand Prize winner\, will be on display.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Cut Ups: Paper Collage
DESCRIPTION:Laura Cavanagh is a Michigan native who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a BFA in Art & Design and a minor in Art History. Cavanagh’s work consists primarily of cut paper and mixed media. Working with these materials allows her to approach her work in much the same way a sculptor does: adding to and cutting away from. Cavanagh finds the artistic process to be deeply meditative. Cavanagh lives and has her studio in a historic home in downtown Rochester\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents When Pigs Fly: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Professional artist and instructor Gregory Potter believes that anyone can develop artistic skill if they put the work into it. Potter’s teaching helps with that\, but he also shows his paintings in art fairs\, galleries and even Army barrack walls\, anywhere people enjoy art and laughing out loud. A flightless bird\, his flamingo isn’t deep or subversive\, but it does have a top hat and is riding on the back of a zebra that is standing in a nest powered by a propeller. Nothing unusual for a man who served four tours in the Middle East. Working in his home gallery in Franklin\, Indiana\, he is amused as viewers sometimes see his animals as “above all the B.S.” or “leaving without knowing where [they’re] going.”

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:“Human iPSC-based Microphysiological Systems for Disease Modeling and Drug Screening”
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: \n\nMy laboratory research spans the disciplinary boundaries between micro/nanotechnology\, biomaterials\, and mechanobiology with an emphasis on their applications to tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Through the use of multi-scale fabrication and integration tools\, my laboratory focuses on the development and application of human tissue/organ-on- a-chip platforms and stem cell technologies for elucidating regenerative biology\, drug screening\, disease modeling\, and cell-based therapies. In this talk\, I will introduce scalable\, nanotopographically-controlled cell and tissue culture models developed in our laboratory\, including nanopatterned human 3D cardiac muscle patches\, human iPSC-based cardiac microphysiological systems\, and a high-throughput drug-induced cardiotoxicity screening assay. Using these biofabricated tools in combination with human pluripotent stem cell technologies\, I will highlight how our biomimetic tissue models helps to gain a better understanding of the structure- function relationship in complex 3D tissues\, and serve as emerging platforms for regenerative cell therapy\, disease modeling\, and drug screening.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:American Berserk exhibition by Valerie Hegarty
DESCRIPTION:Throughout her career\, Brooklyn-based artist Valerie Hegarty has explored fundamental themes of American history and particularly the legacy of 19th-century American art\, addressing topics such as colonization\, slavery\, Manifest Destiny\, nationalism and environmental degradation. Elaborating upon visual references to the art-historical canon of North America\, Hegarty repurposes the ideological tenets of such works into a critical examination of the American legacy.\n\nThe show’s title\, American Berserk\, is borrowed from Philip Roth’s Pulitzer-winning novel American Pastoral\, in which he defines the inverse of the American pastoral ideal as the “indigenous American Berserk.” The show includes a group of ceramic sculptures and a mixed-media site-specific sculpture jutting from the wall. Hegarty’s anarchic\, revisionist take on American history as manifested in the nation’s artistic legacy is embodied in her fantastical works. The sculptures\, which seem imported from a parallel universe\, include watermelons that become animated\, explode and then decay\, sly depictions of George Washington as a series of topiaries\, spectral clipper ships sinking and calcifying into shells\, a branch breaking through the wall and piercing a painting of George Washington making his nose appear to grow and a duo of “fruit face” personae that survey the surreal proceedings.\n\nNote: This grouping of works is an edited restaging of the original show that was initially presented at Burning in Water gallery in New York in 2016.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gloss: Modeling Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on the prominent role of women as the subject of photography\, GLOSS: Modeling Beauty explores the shifting ideals of female beauty that pervade European and American visual culture from the 1920s to today. The exhibition features images of sleek and poised female models and celebrities destined for the glossy pages of fashion magazines and catalogs by leading photographers such as Edward Steichen\, Philippe Halsman\, Helmut Newton\, Andy Warhol\, and Guy Bourdin. Outside of commercial advertising practice\, documentary photographers Elliott Erwitt\, Joel Meyerowitz\, and Ralph Gibson portray candid images of fashionable women on city streets and mannequins in shop windows\, resulting in intriguing juxtapositions of haute couture and everyday life. And\nartists James Van Der Zee\, Eduardo Paolozzi\, and Nikki S. Lee employ the visual strategies of traditional fashion photography\, while offering alternative narratives to mainstream notions of female beauty.\n\nLead support for Gloss: Modeling Beauty is provided by Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection
DESCRIPTION:\"Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection\" showcases the master draftsmanship of two of the most significant artists of the twentieth century: Henri Matisse (1869–1954) and Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015). Curated by Kelly in 2014\, the exhibition speaks to his admiration for Matisse\, as well as to the centrality of drawing in both artists’ practices. To accompany the forty-five rarely exhibited works by Matisse made in the first half of the 20th century\, which reveal his process and range of creativity as a draftsman\, Kelly selected nine of his own lithographic drawings that derive from his time in France during the 1960s\, when the American artist studied Matisse’s sketches and studies of nature and human figures. Together\, the works by Matisse and Kelly form a thought-provoking\, visually striking artistic dialogue\, allowing viewers to experience one artist through the eyes of another and to immerse themselves in the pleasures of close looking.\n \n\"Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection\" is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum in collaboration with The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by the generous support of the Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Charitable Trust and The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation. Additional support provided by the JFM Foundation and Mrs. Donald M. Cox.\n\nLead support for the local presentation of this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, and the University of Michigan Ross School of Business and the Department of the History of Art.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Before colonization\, complex hierarchical societies flourished in Central and West Africa. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi. Drawing on works from UMMA’s collection and several loans\, the exhibition demonstrates how authority was expressed and power contained across a range of historical cultures in Nigeria\, Ghana\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon.\n\nLead support for Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center.

DESCRIPTION:KEVIN CONSTANTE\n\nTitle: \nCultural Socialization\, Family Cohesion\, and Ethnic Identity\n\nAbstract\nThe current study examined the underlying contributors to ethnic identity within the family context. Specifically\, we examined how youth’s cultural socialization experiences and youth’s sense of family cohesion were related to ethnic identity processes (e.g. EI exploration\, resolution\, affirmation). It was hypothesized that youth who experienced high cultural socialization in a cohesive family context\, would show high levels of ethnic identity exploration\, resolution\, and affirmation. Using time 1 of a larger longitudinal study\, 149 Latino adolescents (ages 13-14\; 53% females) from a Midwestern city completed the ethnic identity scale (Umaña-Talyor et al. 2004)\, familial ethnic socialization (Umaña-Taylor\, 2001\; Umaña-Taylor et al. 2009)\, and family cohesion (Alegría &amp\; Takeuchi\, 2004). Results suggest that among youth who are exposed to less cultural socialization\, having a more cohesive family was associated with more ethnic exploration\, as compared to youth in less cohesive families. Feeling close to one’s family was also related to having a clearer sense of one’s ethnicity\, independent of cultural socialization experiences. Finally\, more cultural socialization was associated with higher ethnic identity affirmation among youth in less rather than more cohesive families. Findings are further discussed in light of normative adolescent development.\n\nBiography\nKevin Constante is a third year Ph. D candidate in the Developmental Psychology program. He earned his B.A in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice\, City University of New York. His research involves understanding how adolescent develop connections to their ethnic heritage\, and it’s promotive and protective benefits\, such as in school. His work also involves studying the role of the family cultural contexts on adolescent health risk behaviors. Through the Developmental Training Grant\, he is investigating how one’s ethnic identity shape neural mechanisms that may underlie adolescent risk-taking behaviors.\n\nJOYCE LEE\n\nTitle: \nLongitudinal and reciprocal relations between coparenting relationship quality and father engagement in low-income families\n \nAbstract \nFew studies of low-income\, unmarried parents of young children have examined the longitudinal and reciprocal relations between coparenting relationship quality and father involvement. The goal of this study was to examine whether low-income parents’ coparenting relationship quality and father engagement (in caregiving and play) share a reciprocal relation across the first three years of their child’s life. Data were from Building Strong Families (BSF)\, a large-scale study of low-income\, unmarried couples who enrolled in a relationship strengthening program at or near the birth of their child. The analytic sample consisted of 2\,098 families whose fathers were consistently residential with the mother and child all or most of the time. The study used fathers’ and mothers’ reports of coparenting relationship quality and fathers’ reports of father engagement at two time points: 15 months (T1) and 36 months (T2) after the couple enrolled in the BSF program. A cross-lagged analysis was conducted using couple-level coparenting and father engagement latent variables at T1 and T2. Results showed that couple-level coparenting predicted fathers’ increased engagement in cognitively and socially stimulating play activities\, but not in caregiving. These findings suggest that targeting low-income parents’ coparenting relationship quality may be one way to promote low-income residential fathers’ ongoing engagement in play with their young children.\n \nBiography\nJoyce Lee is a third-year doctoral student in Social Work and Developmental Psychology\, working with Drs. Brenda Volling and Shawna Lee. She received her bachelor’s degree in Social Work with a minor in Psychology at Rutgers University and her master’s degree in Social Work at Columbia University. Currently\, her research involves understanding predictors of father involvement among low-income men\, measurement issues related to father involvement\, and the ways in which fathers’ positive parenting practices—such as sensitivity\, warmth\, and inductive discipline—prevent early signs of child maltreatment and promote healthy socioemotional outcomes for children.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:HONORING DR. CRAIG WILKINS: 2017 COOPER HEWITT NATIONAL DESIGN AWARD WINNER
DESCRIPTION:Dean Jonathan Massey invites you to join us on celebrating Dr. Craig L. Wilkins\, architecture faculty member at U-M Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning\, in honor of his prestigious 2017 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award. Dr. Wilkins was recognized for his work in the Design Mind award category. Dr. Wilkins will lecture briefly on his work\, followed by refreshments. \nPlease click here to RSVP for the event and lunch\nThe National Design Awards were conceived by Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum to honor lasting achievement in American design. The awards are bestowed in recognition of excellence\, innovation\, and enhancement of the quality of life. Dr. Wilkins is the first U-M Taubman College faculty member to receive this honor since the award's founding in 2000. \nWilkins is an architect\, academic\, and author recognized as one of the country’s leading scholars on African Americans in architecture. He is the former director of the U-M Detroit Community Design Center\, as well as a senior lecturer in architecture at U-M Taubman College. Both his creative practice and pedagogy are informed by the long\, rich\, yet relatively untold stories of people of color in both the physical and symbolic construction of America. At multiple levels across diverse platforms\, his award-winning books\, chapters\, essays\, and design interventions recover and present the rich social\, cultural\, political\, historical\, and aesthetic contributions of oft-ignored people and practitioners of color for professional and public engagement.\n\nMore about the Cooper Hewitt National Design Award: \nFirst launched at the White House in 2000 as an official project of the White House Millennium Council\, the annual Awards program celebrates design as a vital humanistic tool in shaping the world\, and seeks to increase national awareness of the impact of design through education initiatives.\nThe National Design Awards is one of the few programs of its kind structured to continue to benefit the nation long after the National Design Awards Gala. A suite of educational programs is offered in conjunction with the Awards during National Design Week\, an initiative launched in 2006 that aims to draw national attention to the ways in which design enriches everyday life. During National Design Week\, the Museum hosts a series of education programs based on the vision and work of the honorees\, and helps promote design events held across the country. SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HEP-Astro Seminar | Data-Driven Models
of the Milky Way
in the Gaia Era
DESCRIPTION:The Gaia satellite will soon deliver magnitudes\, parallaxes\, and proper motions of billions of stars\, offering an unprecedented detailed view of the structure and dynamics of our Galaxy. Correctly exploiting Gaia is challenging due to the colossal amount of data\, the complicated selection effects and noise\, and the inaccuracy of current stellar and 3D Galactic models with respect to the precision of the data. I will demonstrate how those issues can be addressed with modern statistical methods\, specifically hierarchical data-driven probabilistic models\, which allow us to bridge the gap between the statistical power of the data and the physics of interest. I will showcase results obtained from the first Gaia data release\, including precise models of the color-magnitude diagram\, red-clump stars\, and unresolved double and triple systems\, and discuss upcoming data releases and the prospects of constructing detailed three-dimensional models the Galaxy.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LACS Lecture Series. Echoes of Transformation and Crises. Debates on Political Institutions in Interwar Argentina within the University of Buenos Aires' Faculty of Law (1920s-1940s)
DESCRIPTION:Although Argentine historians have begun to analyze how politicians understood the crisis of democracy in the interwar period\, few studies have explored how legal scholars understood the problems of the Argentine representative system and the broader crisis of the worldwide liberal constitutional order in the interwar period. \n \nThis lecture focuses on debates over republican and federal systems in interwar Argentina\, particularly through analysis of the scholarly production of professors and alumni linked to the Faculty of Law of the University of Buenos Aires. In this sense\, it will analyze intersections between the worlds of academics and politics\, and examine the most important diagnoses about the constitutional system and its actual operation in the view of one of the most important schools of Law in the country. In this context\, the cases of the United States and Europe became crucial points of comparison\, leading many to argue for the need to reform Argentina’s political institutions. \n \nDr. Ignacio López holds a Ph.D. in History from Torcuato Di Tella University\, in Argentina. Among his many distinctions and academic positions\, Ignacio is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina. He was also awarded a Fulbright Fellowship and a scholarship from the Ministry of Education of Argentina in order to pursue a postdoctoral research visit at the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (LACS) at the University of Michigan under the mentorship of Dr. Paulina Alberto. He also holds a position as Adjunct Professor of History at the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the Catholic University of Argentina

A member of the Democratic party leadership\, Lewis has served as Senior Chief Deputy Whip since 2003. SUMMARY:Presentation:UM Psychology Community Talk with Dr. Laura Zahodne
DESCRIPTION:Resilience to Alzheimer's disease\n\nAlzheimer’s disease is a leading cause of disability and death. New technologies are enabling scientists to study this disease as never before possible\, but a curative “Alzheimer’s pill” remains out of reach. A recent report by an expert commission concluded that one third of Alzheimer’s cases are preventable\, highlighting promising research on the role of modifiable lifestyle factors. This talk will discuss multiple pathways to building resilience to Alzheimer’s disease through individual and social changes.\n\nDr. Zahodne is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. She received a PhD in Clinical Neuropsychology from the University of Florida and completed additional training at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Columbia University in the City of New York. She is a licensed psychologist with clinical expertise in the assessment of dementia. Dr. Zahodne has received early career awards from the American Psychological Association and the American Neuropsychiatric Association for her research\, which focuses on risk and protective factors for Alzheimer’s disease in diverse populations. Dr. Zahodne is particularly interested in how psychosocial factors modify the Alzheimer’s disease pathogenic pathway\, from brain structure to cognitive performance\, and she holds multiple grants from the National Institute on Aging to fund her community-based research efforts.
