Through the use of multi-scale fabrication and integration tools, my laboratory focuses on the development and application of human tissue\/organ-on- a-chip platforms and stem cell technologies for elucidating regenerative biology, drug screening, disease modeling, and cell-based therapies. At their summits were a select few\u2014kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs, and covered in beads and precious metals, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning \u201cpower figure\u201d) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles, animal skin, metal, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king\u2019s physical body and minkisi. Specifically, we examined how youth\u2019s cultural socialization experiences and youth\u2019s sense of family cohesion were related to ethnic identity processes (e.g. EI exploration, resolution, affirmation). It was hypothesized that youth who experienced high cultural socialization in a cohesive family context, would show high levels of ethnic identity exploration, resolution, and affirmation. Using time 1 of a larger longitudinal study, 149 Latino adolescents (ages 13-14; 53% females) from a Midwestern city completed the ethnic identity scale (Uma\u00f1a-Talyor et al. 2004), familial ethnic socialization (Uma\u00f1a-Taylor, 2001; Uma\u00f1a-Taylor et al. 2009), and family cohesion (Alegr\u00eda & Takeuchi, 2004). Results suggest that among youth who are exposed to less cultural socialization, having a more cohesive family was associated with more ethnic exploration, as compared to youth in less cohesive families. Feeling close to one\u2019s family was also related to having a clearer sense of one\u2019s ethnicity, independent of cultural socialization experiences. Finally, more cultural socialization was associated with higher ethnic identity affirmation among youth in less rather than more cohesive families. Findings are further discussed in light of normative adolescent development.\r\n\r\nBiography\r\nKevin Constante is a third year Ph. D candidate in the Developmental Psychology program. He earned his B.A in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. His research involves understanding how adolescent develop connections to their ethnic heritage, and it\u2019s promotive and protective benefits, such as in school. His work also involves studying the role of the family cultural contexts on adolescent health risk behaviors. Through the Developmental Training Grant, he is investigating how one\u2019s ethnic identity shape neural mechanisms that may underlie adolescent risk-taking behaviors.\r\n\r\nJOYCE LEE\r\n\r\nTitle: \r\nLongitudinal and reciprocal relations between coparenting relationship quality and father engagement in low-income families\r\n \r\nAbstract \r\nFew studies of low-income, unmarried parents of young children have examined the longitudinal and reciprocal relations between coparenting relationship quality and father involvement. The goal of this study was to examine whether low-income parents\u2019 coparenting relationship quality and father engagement (in caregiving and play) share a reciprocal relation across the first three years of their child\u2019s life. Data were from Building Strong Families (BSF), a large-scale study of low-income, unmarried couples who enrolled in a relationship strengthening program at or near the birth of their child. The analytic sample consisted of 2,098 families whose fathers were consistently residential with the mother and child all or most of the time. The study used fathers\u2019 and mothers\u2019 reports of coparenting relationship quality and fathers\u2019 reports of father engagement at two time points: 15 months (T1) and 36 months (T2) after the couple enrolled in the BSF program. A cross-lagged analysis was conducted using couple-level coparenting and father engagement latent variables at T1 and T2. Results showed that couple-level coparenting predicted fathers\u2019 increased engagement in cognitively and socially stimulating play activities, but not in caregiving. These findings suggest that targeting low-income parents\u2019 coparenting relationship quality may be one way to promote low-income residential fathers\u2019 ongoing engagement in play with their young children.\r\n \r\nBiography\r\nJoyce Lee is a third-year doctoral student in Social Work and Developmental Psychology, working with Drs. Brenda Volling and Shawna Lee. In this sense, it will analyze intersections between the worlds of academics and politics, and examine the most important diagnoses about the constitutional system and its actual operation in the view of one of the most important schools of Law in the country. In this context, the cases of the United States and Europe became crucial points of comparison, leading many to argue for the need to reform Argentina\u2019s political institutions. \r\n \r\nDr. Ignacio L\u00f3pez holds a Ph.D. in History from Torcuato Di Tella University, in Argentina. Among his many distinctions and academic positions, Ignacio is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina. New technologies are enabling scientists to study this disease as never before possible, but a curative \u201cAlzheimer\u2019s pill\u201d remains out of reach. A recent report by an expert commission concluded that one third of Alzheimer\u2019s cases are preventable, highlighting promising research on the role of modifiable lifestyle factors. This talk will discuss multiple pathways to building resilience to Alzheimer\u2019s disease through individual and social changes.\r\n\r\nDr. Zahodne is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. She received a PhD in Clinical Neuropsychology from the University of Florida and completed additional training at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Columbia University in the City of New York. She is a licensed psychologist with clinical expertise in the assessment of dementia. Dr. Zahodne has received early career awards from the American Psychological Association and the American Neuropsychiatric Association for her research, which focuses on risk and protective factors for Alzheimer\u2019s disease in diverse populations.
