SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Photography into Fiber: ArtPrize Winner
DESCRIPTION:Steve and Ann Loveless both grew up in northwestern lower Michigan and love the nature and beauty of the outdoors. Steve is a fine art photographer\, and Ann is a textile artist. After exhibiting some of Ann’s textile designs inspired by Steve’s photography\, they had the idea to create works that morph a photograph into a textile. One aspect of the process is that it can trick the viewer into questioning what they are seeing and invite them to engage more with the work. Northwood Awakening\, a 25 by 5 foot piece that was the ArtPrize 2015 Public Vote Grand Prize winner\, will be on display.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Cut Ups: Paper Collage
DESCRIPTION:Laura Cavanagh is a Michigan native who graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan in 2011 with a BFA in Art & Design and a minor in Art History. Cavanagh’s work consists primarily of cut paper and mixed media. Working with these materials allows her to approach her work in much the same way a sculptor does: adding to and cutting away from. Cavanagh finds the artistic process to be deeply meditative. Cavanagh lives and has her studio in a historic home in downtown Rochester\, Michigan.

These images represent an intersection of information as well as ideas of cultural appropriation\, assimilation\, fragmentation and alteration. Crotchett uses wax because it is relevant to both eastern and early western artistic cultures. A professional artist for over 30 years\, Crotchett has exhibited nationally and internationally. She is a professor at Western Michigan University and lives in Kalamazoo\, Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents When Pigs Fly: Oil Painting
DESCRIPTION:Professional artist and instructor Gregory Potter believes that anyone can develop artistic skill if they put the work into it. Potter’s teaching helps with that\, but he also shows his paintings in art fairs\, galleries and even Army barrack walls\, anywhere people enjoy art and laughing out loud. A flightless bird\, his flamingo isn’t deep or subversive\, but it does have a top hat and is riding on the back of a zebra that is standing in a nest powered by a propeller. Nothing unusual for a man who served four tours in the Middle East. Working in his home gallery in Franklin\, Indiana\, he is amused as viewers sometimes see his animals as “above all the B.S.” or “leaving without knowing where [they’re] going.”

SUMMARY:Exhibition:American Berserk exhibition by Valerie Hegarty
DESCRIPTION:Throughout her career\, Brooklyn-based artist Valerie Hegarty has explored fundamental themes of American history and particularly the legacy of 19th-century American art\, addressing topics such as colonization\, slavery\, Manifest Destiny\, nationalism and environmental degradation. Elaborating upon visual references to the art-historical canon of North America\, Hegarty repurposes the ideological tenets of such works into a critical examination of the American legacy.\n\nThe show’s title\, American Berserk\, is borrowed from Philip Roth’s Pulitzer-winning novel American Pastoral\, in which he defines the inverse of the American pastoral ideal as the “indigenous American Berserk.” The show includes a group of ceramic sculptures and a mixed-media site-specific sculpture jutting from the wall. Hegarty’s anarchic\, revisionist take on American history as manifested in the nation’s artistic legacy is embodied in her fantastical works. The sculptures\, which seem imported from a parallel universe\, include watermelons that become animated\, explode and then decay\, sly depictions of George Washington as a series of topiaries\, spectral clipper ships sinking and calcifying into shells\, a branch breaking through the wall and piercing a painting of George Washington making his nose appear to grow and a duo of “fruit face” personae that survey the surreal proceedings.\n\nNote: This grouping of works is an edited restaging of the original show that was initially presented at Burning in Water gallery in New York in 2016.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:CJS Conference | Spies\, Prisoners\, and Farmers: The Origins of Japanese Studies at Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Visit the conference website here for the full schedule: https://ii.umich.edu/cjs/news-events/events/cjs-70-conference-series/spies--prisoners--and-farmers---the-origins-of-japanese-studies-at-michigan.html\n\nIn 1947\, Professor Robert B. Hall became the founding director of the Center for Japanese Studies. Just three years earlier\, at the height of the Pacific War\, he was director of something very different: U.S. intelligence operations against Japan. From Kunming\, Hall worked with the Chinese Communist Party to turn captured Japanese soldiers into spies who would infiltrate the Japanese home islands. His office was frequented by a young man named Ho Chi Minh\, who liked to read the Time magazines in the lobby. Ho demanded that Hall recognize his organization\, the Viet Minh\, in its fight against Japan.\n\nMeanwhile\, the Army had turned Ann Arbor into the base of its Japanese language program. In the halls of East Quad\, formerly interned Japanese-Americans were tasked with teaching Japanese to the officers who would oversee the postwar occupation. Every afternoon\, these student-soldiers marched down State Street to commands shouted in Japanese. \n\nA day-long conference\, Spies\, Prisoners\, and Farmers: The Origins of Japanese Studies at Michigan will trace how the twin legacies of Robert B. Hall and the Army Intensive Japanese Language School laid the foundation for the creation of the Center for Japanese Studies and its historic Okayama Field Station.\n\nFree and open to the public.\n\nPresented in partnership with the National Museum of Japanese History and the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gloss: Modeling Beauty
DESCRIPTION:Focusing on the prominent role of women as the subject of photography\, GLOSS: Modeling Beauty explores the shifting ideals of female beauty that pervade European and American visual culture from the 1920s to today. The exhibition features images of sleek and poised female models and celebrities destined for the glossy pages of fashion magazines and catalogs by leading photographers such as Edward Steichen\, Philippe Halsman\, Helmut Newton\, Andy Warhol\, and Guy Bourdin. Outside of commercial advertising practice\, documentary photographers Elliott Erwitt\, Joel Meyerowitz\, and Ralph Gibson portray candid images of fashionable women on city streets and mannequins in shop windows\, resulting in intriguing juxtapositions of haute couture and everyday life. And\nartists James Van Der Zee\, Eduardo Paolozzi\, and Nikki S. Lee employ the visual strategies of traditional fashion photography\, while offering alternative narratives to mainstream notions of female beauty.\n\nLead support for Gloss: Modeling Beauty is provided by Bank of America and Merrill Lynch. Additional generous support is provided by the University of Michigan Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection
DESCRIPTION:\"Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection\" showcases the master draftsmanship of two of the most significant artists of the twentieth century: Henri Matisse (1869–1954) and Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015). Curated by Kelly in 2014\, the exhibition speaks to his admiration for Matisse\, as well as to the centrality of drawing in both artists’ practices. To accompany the forty-five rarely exhibited works by Matisse made in the first half of the 20th century\, which reveal his process and range of creativity as a draftsman\, Kelly selected nine of his own lithographic drawings that derive from his time in France during the 1960s\, when the American artist studied Matisse’s sketches and studies of nature and human figures. Together\, the works by Matisse and Kelly form a thought-provoking\, visually striking artistic dialogue\, allowing viewers to experience one artist through the eyes of another and to immerse themselves in the pleasures of close looking.\n \n\"Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection\" is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum in collaboration with The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by the generous support of the Eugene V. and Clare E. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa
DESCRIPTION:Before colonization\, complex hierarchical societies flourished in Central and West Africa. At their summits were a select few—kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs\, and covered in beads and precious metals\, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status\, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning “power figure”) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles\, animal skin\, metal\, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king’s physical body and minkisi. Drawing on works from UMMA’s collection and several loans\, the exhibition demonstrates how authority was expressed and power contained across a range of historical cultures in Nigeria\, Ghana\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cameroon.\n\nLead support for Power Contained: The Art of Authority in Central and West Africa is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the African Studies Center.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Brown Bag | Dark Fires in the Sky: Model-Independent Dark Matter Detection via Kinetic Heating of Neutron Stars
DESCRIPTION:I present a largely model-independent probe of dark matter-nucleon interactions. Accelerated by gravity to relativistic speeds\, local dark matter scattering against old neutron stars deposits kinetic energy at a rate that heats them to infrared blackbody temperatures. The resulting radiation is detectable by next generation telescopes such as James Webb and the Thirty Meter Telescope. While underground direct detection searches are not (or poorly) sensitive to dark matter with sub-GeV masses\, higher-than-weak-scale masses\, scattering with strong cross-sections\, scattering below neutrino floors\, spin-dependent per-nucleon scattering below per-nuclear cross-sections\, velocity-dependent scattering\, and inelastic scattering for inter-state transitions exceeding O(100 keV)\, the (non-)observation of dark kinetic heating of neutron stars should advance these frontiers by orders of magnitude. Popular dark matter candidates previously suspected elusive\, such as the thermal Higgsino\, may be discovered.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Let's Talk About It: Mental Health in Academia
DESCRIPTION:Note: Refreshments will be served in Room 337 following the talk\n\nAbstract\nMental health struggles are often equated with personal weakness or deficiency\, rather than an illness\, in society at large and particularly within academia. This has led to a stigma around mental health and little meaningful discussion of the significant effects it can have on happiness\, productivity\, and overall health. Recent studies have shown that large fractions of people working at universities are at risk of having ordeveloping mental illness\, and that graduate students are especially susceptible due to the great demands on their time\, high expectations\, and little control over the direction of their work and/or job prospects. In this talk I will present results from some of these studies\, and I will also share my personal journey with mental health struggles. I will conclude with recommendations for what we can do as a community to help break the silence surrounding mental health and make academia a more supportive and inclusive environment. \n\nCo-sponsored by the Department of Astronomy\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\nJohanna grew up in Central Pennsylvania\, with a farm field at the end of her street. This meant she was lucky enough to have relatively dark skies\, and found inspiration watching meteor showers in the early morning hours\, although she also enjoyed creek-walking\, writing short stories\, and pretending to be a spy. Johanna got her B.S. degree in Physics in 2008 from American University in Washington\, DC\, and then went to graduate school at the University of Arizona in Tucson\, Arizona\, where she got her Ph.D. in Astronomy in 2014. For the first two years of her Carnegie Origins Postdoctoral Fellowship she lived in Washington\, DC and worked at the Carnegie Department of Terrestrial Magnetism before moving to Pasadena in August 2016 to work at the Carnegie Observatories. In her free time Johanna likes teaching astronomy to others (and learning from them!)\, watching baseball\, and running marathons.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:MIPSE Seminar: Creating\, Diagnosing\, and Controlling High Energy Density Matter with the National Ignition Facility
DESCRIPTION:The National Ignition Facility (NIF)\, at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)\, is the world’s largest laser. NIF houses 192 beams delivering >1.8 MJ of UV energy and peak powers of 500 TW to a small target (<< cm3). Depositing this energy in a small volume creates extreme radiation environments and large pressures that have been used to create unique conditions for studying matter at high energy densities. High energy density (HED) matter is defined as having pressures > 1\,000\,000 atm. Understanding the behavior of matter at high energy densities is important for our national security\, many astrophysical questions\, and obtaining inertial confinement fusion ignition. In this talk\, I will provide an overview of the NIF and some of the technology that enables it\, discuss progress in HED science and inertial confinement fusion\, and talk about the challenges and opportunities for future research.\n\nThe seminar will be web-simulcast\; here is the login information:\nLink: https://mipse.my.webex.com/mipse.my/j.php?MTID=mec31878d50d0ea5598153b66381dd52a\nPassword: MIPSE\nMeeting number: 627 439 388

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Department Colloquium | The Universe at One Second after the Big Bang
DESCRIPTION:The Universe is dynamical and has expanded by a factor of over one billion between the present-day and the early thermal epoch known as the neutrino decoupling. The production of relic neutrinos is within seconds of the inflation and heating processes that imprinted the seeds of future structure formation in the Universe. These early universe relics have cooled under the expansion of the Universe and are sensed indirectly through the action of their diminishing thermal velocities on large-scale structure formation. Experimental advances have opened up new opportunities to directly detect the CNB\, an achievement which would profoundly confront and extend the sensitivity of precision cosmology data. PTOLEMY is a novel method of 2D target surfaces\, fabricated from Graphene\, that has unique directional detection capabilities for MeV dark matter and forms a basis for a future large-scale relic neutrino detector. The discussion of PTOLEMY focusses on experimental challenges\, recent developments and the path forward to discovery sensitivity.\n

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Marching Forward: A Research and Scholarship Symposium
DESCRIPTION:As part of the U-M Fall 2017 Marching Forward series\, we invite you to engage across disciplines\, generations\, and communities to advance research and scholarship that explores political\, social\, and economic injustices\, and/or advances strategies for effective social justice mobilization. \n\nThrough this symposium\, we aim to engage the U-M community and the public in further understanding critical historical topics and fostering an intellectual community to explore the civil rights issues of today.\n\nSee the agenda\, including a list of presenters\, here: http://myumi.ch/L4OYg\n\nSee details about small presentations and winners & honorable mentions from the comic contest here: http://myumi.ch/aA2N1\n\nRSVP here: http://myumi.ch/Jl2nm\n\nThis symposium takes place two days after the anticipated visit of Congressman John Lewis\, Andrew Aydin\, and Nate Powell to the University of Michigan (Nov 27th\, Hill Auditorium). Their acclaimed graphic novel trilogy\, March\, recounts Lewis's experiences throughout the Civil Rights Movement. In protest marches from Selma to Montgomery in 1965\, John Lewis and 600 other marchers drew attention to the importance of voting rights for all African Americans. The marchers were brutally attacked by state troopers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma\, Alabama. John Lewis and the marchers did not abandon their cause\, but instead propelled the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.\n\nThis event is co-presented by the International Institute’s Conflict and Peace Initiative\, Department of Psychology\, National Center for Institutional Diversity\, and the Rackham Program in Public Scholarship. For questions regarding the symposium\, please email: MarchingForward@umich.edu.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Self-Assembled Supramolecular Nanosystems for Smart Diagnosis and Targeted Therapy of Intractable Diseases
DESCRIPTION:The College of Pharmacy invites you to the 22nd Annual John G. Wagner Memorial Lecture\, presented by Dr. Kazunori Kataoka\, Innovation Center of NanoMedicine\, Kawasaki Institute of Industrial Promotion\, and Policy Alternatives Research Institute\, The University of Tokyo.\n\nNanotechnology-based medicine (Nanomedicine) has received progressive interest for the treatment of intractable diseases\, such as cancer\, as well as for the non-invasive diagnosis through various imaging modalities. Engineered polymeric nanosystems with smart functions play a key role in nanomedicine as drug carriers\, gene vectors\, and imaging probes. This presentation focuses present status and future trends of self-assembled nanosystems from block copolymers for the therapy and the non-invasive diagnosis of intractable diseases. Nanosystems with 10 to 100 nm in size can be prepared by programmed self-assembly of block copolymers in aqueous entity. Most typical example is polymeric micelles (PMs) with distinctive core-shell architecture. Compared with conventional formulations\, such as liposomes\, PMs have several advantages\, including controlled drug release\, tissue penetrating ability and reduced toxicity [1\,2]. Notable anti-tumor efficacy against intractable and metastatic cancer\, including pancreatic cancer [3]\, glioblastoma [4\,5]\, and cancer stem cells [6]\, of antitumor drug incorporated PMs with pH- and/or redox potential responding properties was demonstrated\, emphasizing their promising utility in cancer treatment. Versatility in drug incorporation is another feasibility of PMs. Loading of imaging reagents makes PMs with theranostic functions [7].\n\nThese results demonstrate the promising features of PMs as platform nanosystems for molecular therapy of various intractable diseases. Very recently\, we developed PMs decorated with glucose to crossing blood-brain barrier by recognizing glucose-transporter overexpressing on brain endothelial cells\, opening new avenue to deliver versatile drugs for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases\, including Alzheimer’s disease [8].\n\nReferences\n[1] H. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The 20th Century American Mountaineering Canon: Parsing the Historical\, Literary\, and Personal
DESCRIPTION:29 November 2017 | 3154 Angell Hall | 5 p.m.\nThe 20th Century American Mountaineering Canon: Parsing the Historical\, Literary\, and Personal | David Stevenson\n\n“And what is good\, Phaedrus\, And what is not good—\n Need we ask anyone to tell us these things?” \n\nIn 2002 as part of a celebration of the American Alpine Club’s centennial I was tasked with compiling a list of the “best” American mountaineering books written in that century. In my introduction I equivocate much about “best\,” substituting\, “influential\,” “historical\,” “representative.” In the end\, all that can be said with any certainty is that the list is chronological. In Jill Neate’s preface to Mountaineering Literature she observes\, “A practicable definition of ‘mountaineering book’ continues to eludes me.” In this talk and conversation I will revisit that list\, its methodology (such as it was)\, speculate about what books written since then would be likely candidates and discuss how different these choices might be for me if the list were “personal” rather than “public.” \n\nDavid Stevenson has been the book review editor of the American Alpine Journal since 1995. His fiction collection\, Letters from Chamonix\, won the Banff Mountain Book Award for Fiction and Poetry in 2014. His collected mountaineering essays\, Warnings Against Myself: Meditations on a Life in Climbing was published in 2016 by the University of Washington Press. He received the H. Adams Carter Literary Award from the American Alpine Club in 2017. He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Utah and works as a professor of English at the University of Alaska Anchorage where he directs the MFA program in creative writing. His home range is the Chugach.

SUMMARY:Meeting:Food\, Energy\, Water Systems in Costa Rica Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Join CGIS Intercultural Program Advisor\, Cristina Zamarron along with program leader Steven Wright\, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering\, COE\; and CGIS alumni as they discuss Food\, Energy\, Water Systems in Costa Rica.  Learn more! \n\nInvestigate the complex relationships between the food\, energy\, and water systems of our society on this 3-credit\, 3-week spring program. This year\, the program will be taught by Steven Wright\, professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.\n\nTo study our intrinsically connected and interdependent food\, energy\, and water (FEW) systems\, one must understand how these systems form an indispensable nexus for human life. Among other benefits\, an understanding of this nexus will help us mitigate and adapt to the challenges of global climate change. Costa Rica\, a leader in sustainable development\, offers many opportunities for hands-on experiences with the FEW nexus\, including a rich combination of learning environments\, working farms\, and laboratories.\n\nThe program is ideal for engineering\, environmental science\, and natural science majors\, however all are encouraged to participate. Students with an interest in system dynamics\, environmental issues\, climate change adaptation\, and other sustainability subjects should apply. While the program has a more technical focus\, discussions will include policy aspects related to environmental management and sustainable development.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Pythagoras at the Bat: An Introduction to Statistics and Modelling
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Let RS (resp.\, RA) denote the average number of runs scored (resp.\, allowed) in a baseball game by a team. It was numerically observed years ago that a good predictor of a team's won-loss percentage is RS^2 / (RS^2 + RA^2)\, though no one knew WHY the formula worked. We review elementary concepts of probability and statistics and discuss how one can build and solve a model for this problem. In the course of investigating this problem we discuss how one attacks problems like this in general (what are the features of a good model\, how to solve it\, and so on). The only pre-requisite is simple calculus (no baseball knowledge is required\, though Red Sox knowledge is always a plus).\n\n\nSponsored by the Department of Mathematics and the UM Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa

SUMMARY:Well-being:FREE 4-Session Mindfulness Class
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION OPEN FOR ALL STUDENTS!\nWednesdays from 7:00 - 8:15pm (11/15\, 11/29\, 12/6\, 12/13)\n@ Ann Arbor District Library Meeting Room (343 S. Fifth Ave.\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48104)\n\nDuring this 4-session class you will be introduced to the practice of mindfulness and learn several skills\, including meditation\, for managing stress and enriching your life. Mindfulness is about developing the ability to be fully attentive to all the moments of your life\, reducing the amount of time you spend worrying about the future or fretting about the past. An important aspect of mindfulness is developing a non-judgmental\, accepting\, even curious\, attitude about your moment-to-moment experience. The more you develop this attitude\, the less you will feel overwhelmed by changes and challenges in your life.\n\nKoru is designed to introduce you to the practice of mindfulness and get you well on your way to developing this important skill. Like learning any new skill\, it takes practice to get comfortable with mindfulness. We invite you to devote yourself to the study and practice of mindfulness over the next four weeks\, and we challenge you to stay curious about what evolves for you as you persistently and patiently practice living mindfully. We also have a free mobile app to track meditation practices for this course!\n\nRegister today before the seats are filled! \n\nFor any questions\, please contact Hitomi Katsumi at hkat@umich.edu.
