Hall became the founding director of the Center for Japanese Studies. Just three years earlier, at the height of the Pacific War, he was director of something very different: U.S. intelligence operations against Japan. From Kunming, Hall worked with the Chinese Communist Party to turn captured Japanese soldiers into spies who would infiltrate the Japanese home islands. His office was frequented by a young man named Ho Chi Minh, who liked to read the Time magazines in the lobby. Ho demanded that Hall recognize his organization, the Viet Minh, in its fight against Japan.\r\n\r\nMeanwhile, the Army had turned Ann Arbor into the base of its Japanese language program. In the halls of East Quad, formerly interned Japanese-Americans were tasked with teaching Japanese to the officers who would oversee the postwar occupation. At their summits were a select few\u2014kings and chiefs whose authority was derived from their direct connection to powerful ancestors and predecessors. These rulers were wrapped in expensive textiles or costly furs, and covered in beads and precious metals, materials that not only signaled their extraordinary status, but were also intended to safely contain the great power they wielded. The famous minkisi (meaning \u201cpower figure\u201d) sculptures of Central Africa were similarly activated through the addition of charged materials. Textiles, animal skin, metal, and beads allowed the lifeless wooden carvings to be activated by local spiritual leaders in order to communicate with the realm of the ancestors and spirits. This exhibition explores the parallels between the adornment of the king\u2019s physical body and minkisi. This has led to a stigma around mental health and little meaningful discussion of the significant effects it can have on happiness, productivity, and overall health. Recent studies have shown that large fractions of people working at universities are at risk of having ordeveloping mental illness, and that graduate students are especially susceptible due to the great demands on their time, high expectations, and little control over the direction of their work and\/or job prospects. In this talk I will present results from some of these studies, and I will also share my personal journey with mental health struggles. I will conclude with recommendations for what we can do as a community to help break the silence surrounding mental health and make academia a more supportive and inclusive environment. \r\n\r\nCo-sponsored by the Department of Astronomy\r\n\r\nAbout the Speaker\r\n\r\nJohanna grew up in Central Pennsylvania, with a farm field at the end of her street. Johanna got her B.S. degree in Physics in 2008 from American University in Washington, DC, and then went to graduate school at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, where she got her Ph.D. in Astronomy in 2014. For the first two years of her Carnegie Origins Postdoctoral Fellowship she lived in Washington, DC and worked at the Carnegie Department of Terrestrial Magnetism before moving to Pasadena in August 2016 to work at the Carnegie Observatories. NIF houses 192 beams delivering >1.8 MJ of UV energy and peak powers of 500 TW to a small target (<< cm3). Depositing this energy in a small volume creates extreme radiation environments and large pressures that have been used to create unique conditions for studying matter at high energy densities. High energy density (HED) matter is defined as having pressures > 1,000,000 atm. Understanding the behavior of matter at high energy densities is important for our national security, many astrophysical questions, and obtaining inertial confinement fusion ignition. Engineered polymeric nanosystems with smart functions play a key role in nanomedicine as drug carriers, gene vectors, and imaging probes. This presentation focuses present status and future trends of self-assembled nanosystems from block copolymers for the therapy and the non-invasive diagnosis of intractable diseases. Nanosystems with 10 to 100 nm in size can be prepared by programmed self-assembly of block copolymers in aqueous entity. Most typical example is polymeric micelles (PMs) with distinctive core-shell architecture. Compared with conventional formulations, such as liposomes, PMs have several advantages, including controlled drug release, tissue penetrating ability and reduced toxicity [1,2]. Notable anti-tumor efficacy against intractable and metastatic cancer, including pancreatic cancer [3], glioblastoma [4,5], and cancer stem cells [6], of antitumor drug incorporated PMs with pH- and\/or redox potential responding properties was demonstrated, emphasizing their promising utility in cancer treatment. Versatility in drug incorporation is another feasibility of PMs. Loading of imaging reagents makes PMs with theranostic functions [7].\r\n\r\nThese results demonstrate the promising features of PMs as platform nanosystems for molecular therapy of various intractable diseases. He is professor of Operations Research at HEC Montr\u00e9al, Canada Research Chair in Distribution Management, adjunct Professor at Molde University College, Bilkent University and the University of Alberta, visiting professor at the University of Southampton, and distinguished professor at the Eindhoven University of Technology. He is also a member of the Interuniversity Research Centre on Enterprise Networks, Logistics and Transportation (CIRRELT) and founding member of the Group for Research in Decision Analysis (GERAD). He has been Editor of Transportation Science, Computers & Operations Research and INFOR. He has authored or coauthored 19 books, as well as more than 500 scientific articles in combinatorial optimization, mostly in the areas of vehicle routing, location and timetabling. Gilbert Laporte has received many scientific awards including the Pergamon Prize (United Kingdom) in 1987, the 1994 Award of Merit from the Canadian Operational Research Society (CORS), and the CORS Practice Prize on four occasions. In 1999, he obtained the Jacques-Rousseau Prize for Interdisciplinarity from the Association canadienne-fran\u00e7aise pour l\u2019avancement des sciences (Acfas), and the President\u2019s Medal from the Operational Research Society (United Kingdom). In 2001, he was awarded the Grand Prize for Teaching Excellence by HEC Montr\u00e9al. He has been a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada since 1998, and a Fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) since 2005. In 2005, he was the co-winner of the Glover-Klingman Prize. In 2007 he was awarded the Innis-G\u00e9rin Medal from the Royal Society of Canada. In 2009 he received the G\u00e9rard-Parizeau Award, he was inducted as the 42nd Honorary Member of the INFORMS International Omega Rho Society, and he received the Robert Herman Lifetime Achievement Award in Transportation Science from the Transportation Science and Logistics Section of INFORMS.
