DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

DESCRIPTION:Motawi Tileworks was started in Ann Arbor\, Michigan 25 years ago by Nawal Motawi in a small garage. Today\, Motawi tiles are sold in over 300 locations nationwide\, including galleries and the shops in Detroit Institute of Arts and the National Gallery of Art in Washington\, DC. Tiles are made from a porcelain hybrid clay\, a recipe unique to Motawi tiles. The raised lines on each tile require a hand glaze technique to pool the glaze between the lines. Motawi Tileworks has many themed collections\, some based on the work of fine artists such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Charley Harper. You can also see 17 permanent Motawi art tile murals throughout Michigan Medicine.

DESCRIPTION:Jean-Marc Fontaine\, a French scientist and artist who earned his Ph.D. from University of Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris\, presents a unique set of ceramic works inspired from 10th-8th century BC to the present day. The style varies from simple\, traditional forms to elaborate\, one-of-a-kind creations. Featuring rustic antique surfaces\, warm colors and highly individualized textures\, his work also occasionally takes whimsical forms. He also plays the accordion. Fontaine is a research scientist at the U-M Medical School in biochemistry.

Brought up in a household where money was tight\, she doesn’t like to waste anything and is captivated by old scraps of things with peeling paint and rusty metal – especially broken things that have a story to tell. She usually starts out with an interesting piece of wood and builds on it\, often painting on it and adding collage\, all while developing an emotional connection to it. Working in her quiet Milan\, Michigan backyard art loft “playground\,” she has no message to preach with her work\, just her own personal wish for peace and justice.

DESCRIPTION:Desiree Warren’s current body of work is a journey using one shape (the orzo) to create a multitude of layers that evoke landscapes and organic assimilations. Growing up in the country in Kansas\, she had wide open spaces to explore\, as well as many of her family’s dilapidated farm buildings and overgrown pasture lands. At the University of Kansas\, she began working with street sign material and has continued to incorporate aluminum and vinyl in her work. Part of this series is included in the 2017 Women to Watch: Metals exhibition at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City\, Missouri\, where she lives and works.

DESCRIPTION:Note: Ebony Patterson Stamps lecture takes place Feb 1\, 5pm\, at the Michigan Theater\, immediately followed at 6pm by artist reception at the Institute for the Humanities.\n\n“What happens when seventy-two men and one woman die and no one knows who they are?” Jamaican artist Ebony Patterson’s of 72—a mixed media work on fabric with digital imagery\, embroidery\, rhinestones\, trimmings\, bandanas\, and floral appliques—considers the 2010 “Tivoli Incursion”  in Kingston\, Jamaica. This armed conflict between the Shower Posse drug cartel and Jamaica's military and police took place when security forces began searching for drug lord Christopher \"Dudus\" Coke\, after the United States requested his extradition. The violence killed at least 73 civilians.\n\n\"Of 72\" will be in conversation with Patterson's more recent work \"...And Babies...\" created at the Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. The lush tapestry-like floor piece continues where \"Of 72\" leaves us and serves to honor both the spirit and the loss of so many black bodies...women\, little boys\, little girls\, even babies\, subjected to acts of violence and abuse.  \n\nEbony G. Patterson is a Jamaican artist born in Kingston\, Jamaica. She studied at Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. An assistant professor in painting at the University of Kentucky\, she has shown her artwork in numerous solo and private exhibitions and is represented by Monique Meloche Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:\"Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection\" showcases the master draftsmanship of two of the most significant artists of the twentieth century: Henri Matisse (1869–1954) and Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015). Curated by Kelly in 2014\, the exhibition speaks to his admiration for Matisse\, as well as to the centrality of drawing in both artists’ practices. To accompany the forty-five rarely exhibited works by Matisse made in the first half of the 20th century\, which reveal his process and range of creativity as a draftsman\, Kelly selected nine of his own lithographic drawings that derive from his time in France during the 1960s\, when the American artist studied Matisse’s sketches and studies of nature and human figures. DESCRIPTION:Throughout the second half of the twentieth century\, pioneering art director and graphic designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) was celebrated for crafting the brand identities of such American corporate icons as ABC\, IBM\, UPS\, and Westinghouse. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo.

DESCRIPTION:Australian artist Patricia Piccinini’s strange\, hyperreal yet sentimental sculptures are often rooted in her speculative visualizations of future species—beings transformed by\, or even created by\, developments in genetic engineering and technology.  On view at UMMA\, \"The Comforter\" presents the likeness of a young girl whose appearance suggests a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair across her face and body. In her lap she tenderly cradles an udder-shaped\, eyeless creature—a possible reference to current experiments in genetically altered milk-producing animals. The encounter staged by the sculpture\, though curious and unexplained\, appears to be one of innocence and intimacy\, and suggests the potential for emotional connection between a diversity of beings. DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from materials as diverse as scrap metal\, garbage\, taxidermy\, and sex toys. When light is directed at these assemblages\, they project shadows that are exceptionally accurate and intricate representations of other things entirely.\n\n\"The Masterpiece\" (2014) is a shadow self-portrait of the artists created from metal casts of dead vermin they collected and welded together into a ball. From afar the casts appear to be a stunning abstract silver sculpture\; on closer inspection the disturbing menagerie of creatures emerges\, only to change form again—as a shadow on the wall—into a precise and elegant image that is astonishingly different from the objects that create it.\n\nLead support for \"Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece\" is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:New techniques in neuroscience have opened the door to rich new data sets of neural activities. These data sets shed light on the computational foundation of the brain\, i.e.\, neurons and synapses. However\, these data also present unprecedented challenges: novel statistical theory and methods are required to model neural activities\, and well-designed experiments are needed to collect informative data. In this talk\, we take on the task of learning connectivity among large sets of neurons. In particular\, we discuss i) how to learn functional connectivity from spike train data using the Hawkes process\, and ii) how to optimally design experiments to collect data that allow us\, for the first time\, to learn physiological connectivity in vivo.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Excuses and Justifications in Epistemology
DESCRIPTION:Epistemology concerns what we should believe. Ethics concerns what we should do. Much recent work in the two fields emphasizes their similarities—their shared concern with oughts\, normativity\, and how things should be in some broad sense—over their differences. An increasingly influential argumentative strategy in the spirit of this broader trend is to argue that the distinction between justifications and excuses—familiar in ethics and the philosophy of law—can be exported to epistemology\, where it can do substantial philosophical work. Timothy Williamson\, Clayton Littlejohn\, Amia Srinivasan\, John Hawthorne\, Jason Stanley\, and others have all argued\, in one form or another\, that many mistakes in epistemology are the consequence of conflating the distinction between justified belief on the one hand\, and merely excusable or blameless belief on the other.\n\nUltimately\, I suspect that this move is too quick—the justification/excuse distinction cannot be straightforwardly or uncritically adopted by epistemologists. But vindicating this suspicion is a major task. My argumentative strategy will involve paying close attention to the roles the excuse/justification distinction plays in the law\, and arguing that there aren’t analogous roles to be played by a similar distinction in epistemology.  Stepping back\, my broader hope is to sound a cautionary note about drawing parallels between practical and epistemic normativity. Concepts and distinctions that have application in the former domain don't 'automatically' have application in the latter\, and when they do\, it takes theoretical work to show this.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Semiars | SIMPs and ELDERs: New Ideas for Dark Matter
DESCRIPTION:Dark Matter could reside in a hidden sector with gauge structure similar to the Standard Model. In particular\, the hidden sector may include a non-Abelian gauge interaction with confinement scale around 100 MeV\, similar to our QCD. Dark mesons\, counterparts of the usual pions\, kaons etc.\, can then play the role of dark matter. Such particles may experience strong number-changing self-interactions\, similar to the 2K<->3pi scattering familiar in QCD. Intriguingly\, such self-interactions can naturally produce a thermal relic abundance of dark mesons consistent with observations. In this talk we will explore two variations of this basic scenario\, “Strongly-Interacting Massive Particle” (SIMP) and “Elastically-Decoupling Relic” (ELDER). We will discuss the basic features of each scenario\, explicit models in which they may be realized\, and their experimental signatures.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Mineral Exploration and Discovery in Africa\, and their Benefits to African Geoscientists - the Ivanhoe Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Ivanhoe Mines and its predecessor companies (e.g. Ivanplats) have been active in Africa for over 20 years\, primarily in the well-known geological provinces of the Central African Copperbelt (DRC\, Zambia) and the Bushveld Complex (South Africa). Discoveries of world-class deposits at Kamoa (Cu) in 2008\, Flatreef (PGE–Ni–Cu) in 2010\, and Kakula (Cu) in 2016\, as well as acquisition of the formerly producing Kipushi mine (Cu-Zn) in 2012\, have transformed the company from a small\, private junior explorer to a prominent\, publically traded mining and development company.  Ivanhoe’s discoveries came in areas dismissed as geologically un-prospective\, and have had fundamental impacts on geological understanding and mineralization models in the Copperbelt and Bushveld. They have also brought substantial benefits and employment to local economies and people\, including geoscientists. Ivanhoe is proud to sponsor a wide range of community and sustainability projects\, education and technical training\, and undergraduate to graduate level studies and research projects.

DESCRIPTION:This program is free and open to the public. Seating is first come first served.\n\nJohn R. Stomberg\, the Virginia Rice Kelsey 1961s Director at the Hood Museum of Art\, Dartmouth College\, worked directly with the late Ellsworth Kelly to create the exhibition Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection now on view at UMMA through February 18\, 2018.\n\nIn this talk\, Dr. Stomberg will begin by tracing the creative evolution of each artist in turn. Matisse got his start in Paris in the late 1880s just as construction workers completed the Eiffel Tower\; Kelly moved there during the reconstruction years that followed World War II. While they shared a passion for color\, the expressiveness of line\, and the vast potential for a collage-based aesthetic\, they did not have a personal relationship. Then\, through an overview of the drawings included in the exhibition\, Stomberg will share insights gleaned on both artists while co-curating the exhibition with Kelly.\n\nJohn R. Stomberg is the Virginia Rice Kelsey 1961s Director of the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College. Before joining Dartmouth he served as the Florence Finch Abbott Director of the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum and the Joseph Allen Skinner Museum and held leadership positions at the Williams College Museum of Art and the Boston University Art Gallery. He holds a BA from Georgetown University and both an MA and Ph.D from Boston University—all in art history. The primary focus of his curatorial work is American art and culture since 1900. Moving between photography\, prints\, paintings\, sculpture\, media art\, and installation work\, his exhibitions have been conceived to broaden our understanding of how art operates in\, and often shapes\, society.  He publishes on modern and contemporary art and issues directly related to museums\, education\, and academia.\n\nMatisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum in collaboration with The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation. \n\nThis exhibition was made possible by the generous support of the Eugene V. and Clare E.
