The violence killed at least 73 civilians.\n\n\"Of 72\" will be in conversation with Patterson's more recent work \"...And Babies...\" created at the Tyler School of Art\, Temple University. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo. The first line shows artists who challenge and confront intense socio-political situations of China\; they confront global forces with individualistic artistry. The second line shows artists who attempt to construct their own artistic niches and global expressions of peace and other humanist concerns. A class of solutions to this problem rely on a global U(1) symmetry that is anomalous with QCD. These solutions lead to robust low-energy predictions\, for example a massless up quark or a light axion. I will present simple extensions to such solutions which can dramatically change these low-energy predictions. In our models\, contributions from small instantons play a significant role in affecting the low-energy physics while preserving the solution to the strong CP problem. As a consequence\, people may become more vigilant towards deviant behavior to protect themselves against such contamination. Indeed\, prior work shows that when the threat of pathogens is imminent\, people often protect themselves from contamination by avoiding others who may go against social norms. However\, other theories suggest that social norms may be stricter in contexts with greater threat in order to enable social coordination to deal with the threat. Although these two theories predict greater threat will be associated with stricter norms\, they suggest different mechanisms for how individuals may deal with the threat. Specifically\, the first would suggest avoidance of others\, while the second would entail social coordination. Importantly\, both these adaptive mechanisms may be at play\, but may be used to a different extent based on individual differences in relational orientations and perceptions of vulnerability to disease. Here\, we tested two distinct neural components: (i) detection of norm-violating behaviors (captured by an N400 event-related potential component) and (ii) increased vigilance (indexed by alpha suppression). 58 American undergraduates received a pathogen threat or control prime and then were asked to judge how violating a series of behaviors (e.g.\, crying) were in various settings (e.g.\, funeral or class lecture) that were pre-tested to be normal or norm violations respectively. Norm-violating (vs. normal) behaviors elicited a stronger negative deflection of electro-cortical response around 400ms post-stimulus (called the N400). This component indicates that norm violations were seen as more incongruent than normal behaviors. Supporting our hypothesis\, the N400 base to peak amplitude was significantly greater for norm violating versus normal behaviors in the pathogen threat (versus control) condition. Moreover\, Alpha-band (8-10.5Hz) power was suppressed (indicating greater vigilance) for the norm-violating (vs. normal) conditions\, indicating participants were more vigilant of norm violations than normal behaviors. Interestingly\, in the pathogen threat condition\, this vigilance effect became less pronounced for people high in interdependent self-construal\, fear of negative evaluation\, need to belong\, and germ aversion. Curiously\, the N400 for norm-violating (vs normal) behaviors was uninfluenced by these variables. Our data suggest that pathogen threats induce heightened vigilance to deviant behaviors\, although this is primarily driven by those low on perceptions of disease vulnerability and need to belong. Our data demonstrate two important neural signatures (N400 and alpha band suppression) that may constitute a crucial part of the behavioral immune system against pathogen contamination. Future work should test how those high in perceptions of vulnerability to disease and need to belong may cope with threat since they are not more vigilant to norm violations. To go faster and farther\, deep space mis-sions of the future will require increasingly larger total changes in the spacecraft velocity – ΔV. The largest ΔV provided by any onboard propulsion system in deep space is 11 km/s by the ion propulsion system on NASA’s Dawn mission. This is 3 to 4 times higher than the ΔV by any onboard chemical propulsion system. Solar EP has now been used on six missions beyond Earth orbit: Deep Space 1\, SMART-1\, Hayabusa 1\, LISA Pathfinder\, Hayabusa 2\, and Dawn\; and on hundreds of commercial communication satellites. The next uses of EP will be NASA’s mission to the metal world (16) Psyche and ESA’s BebiColombo mission to Mercury. This activity is driven by the inescapable reality of the rocket equation. Yet EP has just scratched the surface of what it can do. This talk will discuss how advanced EP technologies will impact an impressive range of future space activities including: rapid transportation throughout the solar system\; human missions beyond low-Earth orbit\; planetary defense\; asteroid mining\; gravitational wave experiments\; and even interstellar precursor missions.\n\nJohn Brophy received a B.S. in Mechanical Engr. from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1978\, and M.S. Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State University in 1980 and 1984. Her research interests lie at the intersection of exhibition-making and participation\, migration\, globalization\, and decolonial aesthetics.\n\nBrad Smith’s work addresses imaging\, and its impact on society’s understanding of the social\, ethical\, and political status of the embryo. Investigating visualization methods for cardiovascular development\, he has established globally-adopted protocols for MRI imaging of embryos. He creates animations and graphics demonstrating developmental biology.\n\nElona Van Gent utilizes three dimensional computer technologies to investigate the metaphorical and morphological potential of hybrid life forms. Most recently she is focussing on the application of ornamental grotesque design strategies to create elaborate depictions of horrible and intractable (wicked) social problems such as poverty\, war\, environmental degradation\, corruption\, and inequality. Her work has been presented through exhibitions\, guest lectures\, and conferences worldwide.
