SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Ink Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Based out of Chelsea\, Michigan\, John Pappas believes that if you can imagine a fun idea making sense\, you should make it. He applies this to both his graphic design and fine art. With so much to see and ruminate on in life\, Pappas keeps his hands busy by putting pen to paper. This body of work consists of portraits drawn with ink on a variety of surfaces including paper\, basswood and aspen panels in an offbeat pen and ink style that leans heavily on pointillism and crosshatching. The subjects range from athletes to musicians to personal friends.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents My Playground: Assemblage Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Starting with watercolor\, Joan Painter-Jones’ work kept building out farther and farther until it became sculpture. Brought up in a household where money was tight\, she doesn’t like to waste anything and is captivated by old scraps of things with peeling paint and rusty metal – especially broken things that have a story to tell. She usually starts out with an interesting piece of wood and builds on it\, often painting on it and adding collage\, all while developing an emotional connection to it. Working in her quiet Milan\, Michigan backyard art loft “playground\,” she has no message to preach with her work\, just her own personal wish for peace and justice.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Prairie Mantras: Paint & Vinyl on Aluminum
DESCRIPTION:Desiree Warren’s current body of work is a journey using one shape (the orzo) to create a multitude of layers that evoke landscapes and organic assimilations. Growing up in the country in Kansas\, she had wide open spaces to explore\, as well as many of her family’s dilapidated farm buildings and overgrown pasture lands. At the University of Kansas\, she began working with street sign material and has continued to incorporate aluminum and vinyl in her work. Part of this series is included in the 2017 Women to Watch: Metals exhibition at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City\, Missouri\, where she lives and works.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Desert Southwest: Photography
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Flint\, Michigan\, Daniel Sidoli has always had the creative itch. It led him to the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas and a BA degree in Fine Arts. With this body of work\, his intent is to capture images that illustrate the unique landscape that erosion sculpts over time. His goal with photography is to be artistic yet convey truth. He wants the subject to inspire the audience and leave a lasting impression: to elicit an emotional response. Each image represents moments in time and of journeys traveled\, both figuratively and literally\, since he is involved in every step of the process as he sees each piece to completion.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Border Crossers
DESCRIPTION:Students across campus—from LSA\, Engineering\, Art and Design\, and Information—will work with visiting artist Chico MacMurtrie during winter semester 2018 planning\, building\, and launching a 40-foot robotic sculpture that poetically explores the notion of borders and boundary conditions. The project\, led by the Institute for the Humanities\, symbolizes the humanities in action\, and the empowerment that can be achieved through working together\, overcoming obstacles and divides\, and discovering creative solutions.\n\nMacmurtrie is an award winning artist\, renowned internationally for his large-scale robotic sculpture\, whose work combines materiality and robotics\, the visceral and conceptual. His artist residency and interdisciplinary project \"Border Crossers\" encourages investigation of borders as constructed entities\, both embodying a simple curiosity to see what lies on the other side of a border (national\, architectural\, environmental\, etc.) and expression of a utopian desire to live in a world without borders.\n\nIn February\, MacMurtrie and the students will launch the robotic sculpture during two \"performances\" and MacMurtrie will give a special Penny W. Stamps Lecture. The gallery exhibition will include large-scale drawings which serve as plans and maps for MacMurtrie's visionary Border Crossers. Life-size robotic models will also be presented in the exhibition in conversation with the drawings. The models\, built by the all-student team with MacMurtrie's guidance\, are prototypes for the project\, offering preliminary steps in the workshop and the process towards realizing the large scale robotic sculpture.\n\nChico MacMurtrie is the Artistic Director of Amorphic Robot Works\, an interdisciplinary creative collective located in Brooklyn\, NY. MacMurtrie/ARW have received numerous awards for their experimental new media artworks\, including five grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Andy Warhol Foundation Grant\, the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship\, VIDA Life 11.0\, and Prix Ars Electronica. Chico MacMurtrie was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts in 2016.\n\nVisiting artist Chico MacMurtrie's residency and project is sponsored by the U-M Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with U-M Museum of Art\, Michigan Robotics\, Michigan Engineering\, School of Information\, Penny Stamps Speaker Series\, Stamps School of Art and Design\, and ArtsEngin.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Pre-Fab/Post-Fab: Art in a Readymade Era
DESCRIPTION:Pre-Fab/Post-Fab: Art in a Readymade Era showcases the works of Heidi Barlow\, Shaina Kasztelan\, and Bailey Scieszka\, three young women artists based in Detroit\, MI. Their work\, although varying in style and form\, speaks to a generation growing up with the influence of mass consumption\, internet shopping\, the glut of plastic toys\, fake jewels\, and tchotchkes. Whereas artists of the ‘60s and ‘70s reached first for paint tubes and canvas\, these artists use inexpensive and lowbrow materials to twist the signifiers of pop culture\, as they relate to gender politics and American ideals. It’s a balancing act between the icing and the cake\, surface and substance. \n\nBarlow’s confection-like constructs are unsettling\, much like an empty float or matted-hair Barbie in a backyard pool. Although enticing\, they allude to something lost in the translation\, some sweetness\, or idealism gone missing\, along with what once mattered. Yet\, the work isn’t cynical\, but embraces transition instead. We’ve hardened a little in the process\, much like the stiff and sugary piping Barlow often incorporates in her works. And maybe that’s a good thing. \n\nIf Barlow’s aesthetic leans towards Stepford Wives gone awry and the guilty pleasure of eBay\, Shaina Kasztelan offers us psychedelic Middle America. Her assemblages are disorienting\, vertigo-inducing. Technicolor sculptures conjure up hallucinations of the mall\, or spinning carnival rides that last too long. Kasztelan’s work is sinister\, even a little menacing. As viewers we are leery.\n\nFinally\, Bailey Scieszka takes this subversive garish ethos full tilt and invents her own world\, literally morphing into her own creation. Scieszka’s alter-ego Old Put\, a demonic shape-shifting clown\, becomes the artist/protagonist and creates work in performance\, video and drawing. Old Put collects pop culture references like artifacts of a lost civilization\, and seems as likely to commit a murder as bake a cake. \n\nFor Barlow\, Kasztelan and Scieszka\, outdated paradigms about class\, good taste\, and femininity are just temporal flashes in the pan. And it’s their party.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:A More Human Dwelling Place: Reimagining the Racialized Architecture of America
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Michigan Journal of Race & Law\, \"A More Human Dwelling Place: Reimagining the Racialized Architecture of America\" is a symposium happening on February 16 and 17 at the University of Michigan Law School.\n\nOver two days\, we will examine five archetypal spaces in America: homes and neighborhoods\, schools\, courthouses\, prisons\, and borders. The symposium endeavors to consider the ways in which these spaces have become increasingly racialized\, diagnose how that racialization impedes their basic functioning\, and reimagine these spaces at their best\, and our world as a more human dwelling place. James Baldwin gave us this name\, embedded in his imperative “to illuminate that darkness\, blaze roads through vast forests\, so that we will not\, in all our doing\, lose sight of its purpose\, which is\, after all\, to make the world a more human dwelling place.”\n\nThe symposium will bring together individuals working to better these spaces\, hailing from many disciplines\, including law\, history\, sociology\, journalism\, literature\, architecture\, urban planning\, and visual art. Together\, we hope to conceptualize forgotten or not yet dreamed of alternatives. Through discussions of projects already realized and ideas not yet concrete\, we will collectively inch toward the world we wish to inhabit. \n\nThe symposium is free and open to the public. All are welcome. \n\nPlease register to attend at https://madeleine-jennings.squarespace.com/register/.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ISP Workshop. Belief and Action: The Subjects of Islamic Studies
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Zaid Adhami\, assistant professor of religion\, Williams College\; Kathryn Babayan\, associate professor of history\, U-M\; Sarah Eltantawi\, assistant professor of religion\, Evergreen State College\; Hussein Fancy\, associate professor of history\, U-M\; Juliane Hammer\, associate professor of religion\, University of North Carolina\; Rudolph Ware\, associate professor of history\, U-M\n\nOver the past generation\, Islamic studies in North America has undergone a dramatic shift. In nineteenth-century Europe\, Orientalism embraced the study of the histories\, cultures\, and religions of lands from the southern and eastern Mediterranean through Central Asia and into the Indian subcontinent. Orientalist scholars typically were not themselves natives of any of these regions\; nor were they themselves Muslims. In the course of the last two centuries\, Orientalism has been atomized: divided into distinct fields of regional and disciplinary studies. At the same time\, the study of Islam—the religion\, the culture\, and the civilization—has gone global\; scholars today study the history\, current state\, and future of Islam and Muslims worldwide. And today\, students and teachers of Islamic studies are much more likely to come from within the tradition: born to Muslim families or in Muslim-majority regions\, or converts to the faith. Yet in the field of Islamic studies—as in other religious studies disciplines—scholars struggle to account for the subject of their inquiry. They debate the focus of Islamic atudies: societies\, cultures\, or religion itself. They seek a scholarly vocabulary to talk about belief\, and to think together about the relationship between belief\, scholarship\, and pedagogy. And they debate the role that action and activism plays for scholars in the field. \n\nAt this workshop\, we will convene a group of scholars from U-M and other North American universities to discuss the genealogy\, current state\, and future of Islamic studies in North American universities. How has Islamic studies evolved over the last two centuries? How has the rising number of Muslim scholars in the field changed the nature of our scholarship? What changes must still happen\, in order to provide leadership within American universities and in American society at large? How does scholarship intersect with action\, activism\, and advocacy? How can Islamic studies serve as a model for programs of religious studies in general? This workshop will consist of a series of roundtable discussions\, structured in order to facilitate discussion. Each roundtable will pair two scholars working in disparate regions\, disciplines\, and historical periods. Each participant will speak for about ten minutes\, followed by a conversation among scholars and attendees. The workshop is designed to facilitate free-ranging\, creative discussion\, and to integrate the audience in all discussions\, in order to take stock of the field and generate a productive discussion of our future.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Spherulitic Growth of Coral Skeletons and Synthetic Aragonite: Nature’s 3D-Printing
DESCRIPTION:Seminar series sponsored by Materials Science & Engineering Department. \n\nAbstract: Crystallization done by living organisms\, termed biomineralization\, involves biological control over crystal nucleation\, growth\, and crystal orientation patterns in the final biomineral. Marine biomineralization mechanisms are only beginning to be understood\, are often surprising\, and important to understand the evolution of biomineralizers and their interactions with their environments.\n In this seminar I will describe one mechanism of crystallization by attachment of amorphous particles to fresh\, forming coral skeletons\, and their subsequent crystallization into aragonite crystals. Unprecedented crystal orientation patterns as the one displayed here\, analyzed and displayed using Polarization-dependent Imaging Contrast (PIC) mapping\, reveal that the crystals are spherulitic\, that is\, elongated\, and radiating from centers or lines. Spherulites fill 3D space at greater speed than any other crystal growth mode\, thus this is Nature’s 3D-printing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection
DESCRIPTION:\"Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection\" showcases the master draftsmanship of two of the most significant artists of the twentieth century: Henri Matisse (1869–1954) and Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015). Curated by Kelly in 2014\, the exhibition speaks to his admiration for Matisse\, as well as to the centrality of drawing in both artists’ practices. To accompany the forty-five rarely exhibited works by Matisse made in the first half of the 20th century\, which reveal his process and range of creativity as a draftsman\, Kelly selected nine of his own lithographic drawings that derive from his time in France during the 1960s\, when the American artist studied Matisse’s sketches and studies of nature and human figures. Together\, the works by Matisse and Kelly form a thought-provoking\, visually striking artistic dialogue\, allowing viewers to experience one artist through the eyes of another and to immerse themselves in the pleasures of close looking.\n \n\"Matisse Drawings: Curated by Ellsworth Kelly from The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation Collection\" is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum in collaboration with The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation.\n\nThis exhibition was made possible by the generous support of the Eugene V. and Clare E. Thaw Charitable Trust and The Pierre and Tana Matisse Foundation. Additional support provided by the JFM Foundation and Mrs. Donald M. Cox.\n\nLead support for the local presentation of this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, Michigan Medicine\, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, and the University of Michigan Ross School of Business and the Department of the History of Art.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Paul Rand
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the second half of the twentieth century\, pioneering art director and graphic designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) was celebrated for crafting the brand identities of such American corporate icons as ABC\, IBM\, UPS\, and Westinghouse. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter
DESCRIPTION:Australian artist Patricia Piccinini’s strange\, hyperreal yet sentimental sculptures are often rooted in her speculative visualizations of future species—beings transformed by\, or even created by\, developments in genetic engineering and technology. On view at UMMA\, \"The Comforter\" presents the likeness of a young girl whose appearance suggests a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair across her face and body. In her lap she tenderly cradles an udder-shaped\, eyeless creature—a possible reference to current experiments in genetically altered milk-producing animals. The encounter staged by the sculpture\, though curious and unexplained\, appears to be one of innocence and intimacy\, and suggests the potential for emotional connection between a diversity of beings. This theme is a common one for Piccinini\, whose work incorporates (often obliquely) ideas and questions about the ethical implications of scientific progress and the conflicts in our culture between the natural and the man-made.\n\nLead support for \"Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from materials as diverse as scrap metal\, garbage\, taxidermy\, and sex toys. When light is directed at these assemblages\, they project shadows that are exceptionally accurate and intricate representations of other things entirely.\n\n\"The Masterpiece\" (2014) is a shadow self-portrait of the artists created from metal casts of dead vermin they collected and welded together into a ball. From afar the casts appear to be a stunning abstract silver sculpture\; on closer inspection the disturbing menagerie of creatures emerges\, only to change form again—as a shadow on the wall—into a precise and elegant image that is astonishingly different from the objects that create it.\n\nLead support for \"Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece\" is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the Richard and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Statistics Department Seminar Series: Mert Pilanci\, Assistant Professor\, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science\, University of Michigan
DESCRIPTION:With the advent of massive data sets\, machine learning\, artificial intelligence and information processing techniques are expected to bring unprecedented and transformative capabilities in engineering and sciences across a variety of fields. However\, existing algorithms for mathematical optimization\, which is one of the critical core component in these techniques\, often prove ineffective for scaling to the extent of all available data. This talk introduces our recent work on random projection methods in the context of distributed optimization of convex and non-convex objectives to address this challenge. First\, we establish the theoretical relation between complexity and optimality in convex optimization. We provide a general information-theoretic lower bound on any method that is based on random projection\, which surprisingly shows that the most widely used form of random projection is\, in fact\, statistically sub-optimal. We then present a novel method\, which iteratively refines the solutions to achieve statistical optimality and generalize our method to optimizing arbitrary convex functions of a large data matrix. We also discuss distributed variants of the random projection methods which can be considered as a novel improvement of the Alternating Directions Method of Multipliers (ADMM) for distributed optimization. Moreover\, due to the special structure of random projection\, it is possible to speed up computation even further using dedicated hardware implementations such as graphical processing units (GPUs). Secondly\, we consider a general class of non-convex optimization problems that arise in neural networks and phaseless imaging problems. We prove that the randomized second order optimization method with a suitable initialization recovers the global optimum under mild assumptions. We demonstrate that the proposed methods enable solving large scale convex and non-convex machine learning\, statistical inference and inverse problems orders of magnitude faster than existing methods.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Life After Graduate School Seminar | Physics in Finance
DESCRIPTION:Modern finance offers numerous opportunities for those with advanced training in the natural sciences and mathematics: I found one such opportunity myself in 2010 and left academia for finance. Unfortunately it can be difficult to obtain reliable information about how to make the transition and what to expect on the other side. In my talk\, I will draw from my own experiences and those of my colleagues to give you a sense of life in the quantitative financial world. I will survey the different sectors of the financial industry\, the firms that inhabit them\, the structure of financial markets\, and asset categories. I will describe how to prepare for interviews and what to expect during the interview process\, the skills that are generally required on the job\, and a typical workday. Career transitions are deeply personal decisions\, so I will talk about ethical issues and some points to ponder if you find yourself considering a move to finance.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Alumni Connections: \"Peacekeeping and the Proliferation of Small Arms\" with Eric Berman
DESCRIPTION:The number of peacekeeping forces deployed in recent years is at historic highs. The security of the men and women serving in these missions—and of the weapons\, ammunition\, and equipment in their possession—is frequently at risk. Peacekeepers have lost thousands of weapons and millions of rounds of ammunition. Moreover\, much of this loss was likely preventable. \n\nEric Berman (B.A. 1986) is the director of Small Arms Survey\, a global centre of excellence whose mandate is to generate evidence-based\, impartial\, and policy-relevant knowledge on all aspects of small arms and armed violence. Previously\, he has worked at the United Nations\, The UN Transitional Authority of Cambodia\, the UN Office at Geneva\, and the UN International Commission of Inquiry (Rwanda).\n\nJoin the political science grad on Friday\, February 16 at 2 p.m. for an Alumni Connections session where he will talk about the Making Peace Operations More Effective (MPOME) project and how it will deepen the understanding of lost materials from peace operations and develop mechanisms to improve security and administrative oversight.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Between Past and Future: Wang Qingsong 1999-2006
DESCRIPTION:Curated by ZHANG Fang\, this art exhibition will include six of WANG Qingsong’s representative photo works that depict the traumatic transformations that have taken place inside China. These photographs are inspired by China’s drive for globalization over the last few decades. \n\nPlease join us for the reception and Meet the Artist at 4 pm\, January 24 at the Willis Ward Art Lounge. \n\nAbout WANG Qingsong\n\nAn artist\, educator\, and curator\, WANG Qingsong represents a generation of Chinese cultural producers and creative intellectuals who have exerted a profound influence on contemporary Chinese art practices. Wang’s large format photographic film works have been exhibited around the world at major museums\, art centers\, and galleries\, playing a pivotal role in expanding the international art market for Chinese visual arts.\n\nFormally trained as a painter\, WANG Qingsong now works more like a film director who gathers dozens – sometimes even hundreds – of participants to produce improvisatory works that comment on consumerism\, urbanization and social change. In 2014\, Wang worked with University of Michigan faculty and students to create a large scale installation-photography work\, one that has students perched along a thin stairway spanning the diagonal of a massive chalkboard\, on which names of the top 500 institutions of higher education were written.\n\nIn winter 2018\, Wang Qingsong will stage a new work that would stimulate comparative study of urban renewal efforts in China and the U.S. The work will feature photographic/film images of Detroit’s historical Chinatown and industrial-warehouses areas which have undergone urban renewal since the 1960s.\n\n*Image: The Glory of Hope\, 240x180cm\, 2007\, courtesy of the artist Wang Qingsong

SUMMARY:Other:Recent Advances in Fluorine (Radio) chemistry
DESCRIPTION: The success of Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and renewed interest in [18F]radiochemistry led to creative methods to incorporate 18F into molecules of increasing complexity. Despite these advances\, clinically useful radiotracers lie within a narrow accessible space with [18F]fluoroalkanes and [18F]fluoroarenes at the forefront. Many potentially high value PET 18F-labeled tracers and drugs lie outside this radiochemical space\, and the ability to test tracers not amenable to traditional or newly developed 18F-labeling intervention would be a major boost for PET imaging. A more diverse range of 18F-tags could immediately serve medicinal chemists by informing the selection of lead compounds much earlier in the drug discovery pipeline. This lecture will present our general approach to late stage 18F-fluorination and the recent contribution we have made to this field of research with the labeling of a range of 18F-tags for PET. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nVeronique Gouverneur (University of Oxford)

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:HET Seminars | Universality and Thermalization of Fast Quenches
DESCRIPTION:Quantum quench - a sadden change of system Hamiltonian - provides a rich and tractable framework to access dynamics of thermalization of a quantum isolated system. When the chnge of Hamiltonian is fast but not instantaneous (so called fast quenches) the dynamics often can be described in terms of the UV fixed point\, thus leading to universal predictions. We employ conformal perturbation theory to calculate the behavior of various quantities (one and two point functions) during and after the quench. Furthermore\, by calculating the energy fluctuations after the quench we argue that at late times the system will thermalize\, provided it satisfies the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Smith Lecture: Liquefaction Hazard in the Built Environment: Numerical and Experimental Investigations into the Effectiveness of Liquefaction Mitigation Techniques
DESCRIPTION:Soil liquefaction continues to cause devastating damage to the built environment during earthquakes. In recent years\, earthquakes in Christchurch-New Zealand (2010-2011)\, Tohoku-Japan (2011)\, Muisne-Ecuador (2016)\, have caused widespread liquefaction resulting in unacceptable settlement\, tilt and deformation of buildings\, especially those on shallow foundations. Field observations from such events provide valuable information about the behavior of soil and the response of structures\, but a scarcity of instrumentation means that detailed recordings of the soil and structure responses from the time of the earthquake are lacking. Data is especially sparse regarding the performance and effectiveness of liquefaction mitigation strategies. Numerical and experimental studies have been performed at the University of Colorado Boulder to generate new case histories under controlled conditions. This presentation will summarize trends from both physical and numerical models\, focusing on how structural performance is affected by some common liquefaction mitigation approaches

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Lecture Series | Reactive Viewing: Screens and Publics in 21st Century India
DESCRIPTION:Film and television in India have engendered excessive responses from sections of the audience for well over half a century now. There are well-documented studies of such excesses in the domains of film star fandom and popular devotion alike. In the more recent past\, screen images have been accused of causing violence and even death (of viewers either due to shock or suicide). Recent scholarship on print media expands the field of audience excesses by suggesting that newspapers and magazines are not far behind as triggers of violence. And none of this research is even referring to the minefield of social media outrage. Although it should not come as a surprise to researchers that contemporary publics do not easily fit into the Habsermasian conception of the public sphere\, literature on old and new media continue to be framed by it. Furthermore\, the spectatorial response that constitutes screen publics in our time is not satisfactorily explained by concepts such as darsan\, corpothetics and the active audience. I examine the evolving texts and contexts of film star fandom to argue that forms of engagement characteristic of fan activity offer insights into present day media publics—even those that have nothing do with either stars or the cinema. \n \nS.V. Srinivas is a professor at the School of Liberal Studies\, Azim Premji University\, Bengaluru. He has been associated with the Bengaluru-based Centre for the Study of the Culture and Society in various capacities since 1998 and is now one of its trustees. He held visiting positions at the Asia Research Institute\, National University of Singapore (2004-05)\, Centre for Contemporary Studies\, Indian Institute of Science (2013-15) and the Department of Communication\, University of Hyderabad (2014). He was the ICCR Chair Professor of Indian Culture and Society at Georgetown University (2012-13). His research focuses on the intersections between popular culture and mass politics. SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture. Crossroads\, Crossings\, and Transgressions: Deconstructing Borders and Barriers in Southeast Asian/American Studies
DESCRIPTION:While Southeast Asia has long been a crossroad of influences and transnational movements\, the rise of Asia-Pacific as an economic and political power center has brought increased attention to regional dynamics\, transnational connections\, processes and practices. Transnational flows of people\, goods\, capital\, and ideas have engendered optimism about exchange\, interdependence\, and understanding\, while persisting conflicts over resources\, territorial claims\, and national belonging have animated the discourse about borders\, boundaries\, lines of differentiation and stratification\, crossings and transgressions in the examination of both the causes and consequences of conflict. These new im/mobilities and spatialities\, in turn\, compel a re-thinking of prevailing approaches and epistemologies that have been delimited by disciplinary boundaries.\n\nThis talk maps and interrogates the ways in which global and regional forces and dynamics inform new im/mobilities\, spatialities\, and belongings\, and the negotiations that Southeast Asian individuals and communities have to engage at multiple levels and in multiple arenas. It is particularly attentive to the linkages between macro forces and the micro politics of the everyday struggle to survive and resist. It critiques and problematizes the binary between area and Ethnic/American Studies\, and argues for a more expansive analytical approach that focuses on continuum\, intersectionality\, and relationality between peoples\, communities\, histories\, and fields of study without abandonment of historical\, contextual\, and experiential specificities. \n \nProfessor Khatharya Um is Associate Professor and Program Coordinator of Asian American and Asian Diaspora Studies\, and affiliated faculty of Global Studies\, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies and the Center for Race and Gender. She is also Faculty Adviser for the Berkeley Human Rights Center\, member of the UC system-wide Faculty Advisory Board on Southeast Asia\, and Faculty Academic Director of Berkeley Study Abroad.\n\nProfessor Um received her PhD in Political Science from the University of California\, Berkeley where she was also the Chancellor’s Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow. Her research and teaching interests focus simultaneously on Southeast Asia and Southeast Asian American communities and include migration\, diaspora and transnational studies\, colonial and post colonial studies\, and genocide studies. She is the author of From the Land of Shadows: War\, Revolution and the Making of the Cambodian Diaspora (NYU Press\, 2015) and lead co-editor of Southeast Asian Migration: People on the Move in Search of Work\, Refuge and Belonging (Sussex Academic Press\, 2015)\, and has published numerous scholarly articles on Southeast Asia and Southeast Asian American communities. \n\nIn addition to her academic work\, Professor Um is also actively involved in community advocacy\, principally on issues of refugee integration and of educational access for linguistically and culturally diverse students. She has served on numerous national and community Boards of Directors\, including as Board Chair of the Washington DC- based Southeast Asian Resource Action Center\, and as President of the National Association for the Education and Advancement of Cambodian\, Laotian and Vietnamese Americans. She was also Founder and Chair of the National Cambodian American Organization\, Commissioner of the National Cambodian Health Crisis Initiative\, and member of the Panel of Experts of the NEA Quality Schools Project. \n\nProfessor Um has received numerous awards for her community leadership and service\, including congressional recognitions from Congresswoman Barbara Lee and Congresswoman Anna Eshoo. She was a Chancellor Public Scholar and the first Cambodian American woman to receive a Ph.D.

SUMMARY:Other:Live Robotic Border Crossers Performances
DESCRIPTION:Join us as students from the Border Crossers project launch the robotic border crossers--transported via a student-made autonomous vehicle--at three campus locations.\n\nDuring winter semester 2018\, students across campus—from LSA\, Engineering\, Art and Design\, and Information—will work with visiting artist Chico MacMurtrie planning\, building\, and launching a 40-foot robotic sculpture that poetically explores the notion of borders and boundary conditions. \n\nMacMurtrie’s artist residency and interdisciplinary project\, \"Border Crossers\,\" led by the Institute for the Humanities\, encourages investigation of borders as constructed entities\, both embodying a simple curiosity to see what lies on the other side of a border (national\, architectural\, environmental\, etc.) and expression of a utopian desire to live in a world without borders.\n\nThe project symbolizes the humanities in action\, and the empowerment that can be achieved through working together\, overcoming obstacles and divides\, and discovering creative solutions.\n\nChico MacMurtrie is an award winning artist\, renowned internationally for his large-scale robotic sculpture\, whose work combines materiality and robotics\, the visceral and conceptual. MacMurtrie is the Artistic Director of Amorphic Robot Works\, an interdisciplinary creative collective located in Brooklyn\, NY. \n\nVisiting artist Chico MacMurtrie's residency and project are sponsored by the U-M Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with U-M Museum of Art\, Michigan Robotics\, Michigan Engineering\, School of Information\, Penny Stamps Speaker Series\, Stamps School of Art and Design\, and ArtsEngin.\n\n\nBorder Crossers Events\nBorder Crossers installation\nFeb 16-March 23 2018\nInstitute for the Humanities Gallery\, 202 S.
