SUMMARY:Exhibition:Window Installation | Cosmogonic Tattoos
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017\, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled \"Cosmogonic Tattoos\,\" his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings\, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides\, imaginatively transformed within our campus context\, this project celebrates the power of architecture\, ornament\, and material objects to shape knowledge\, historical memory\, and cultural identity.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Ink Portraits
DESCRIPTION:Based out of Chelsea\, Michigan\, John Pappas believes that if you can imagine a fun idea making sense\, you should make it. He applies this to both his graphic design and fine art. With so much to see and ruminate on in life\, Pappas keeps his hands busy by putting pen to paper. This body of work consists of portraits drawn with ink on a variety of surfaces including paper\, basswood and aspen panels in an offbeat pen and ink style that leans heavily on pointillism and crosshatching. The subjects range from athletes to musicians to personal friends.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents My Playground: Assemblage Sculpture
DESCRIPTION:Starting with watercolor\, Joan Painter-Jones’ work kept building out farther and farther until it became sculpture. Brought up in a household where money was tight\, she doesn’t like to waste anything and is captivated by old scraps of things with peeling paint and rusty metal – especially broken things that have a story to tell. She usually starts out with an interesting piece of wood and builds on it\, often painting on it and adding collage\, all while developing an emotional connection to it. Working in her quiet Milan\, Michigan backyard art loft “playground\,” she has no message to preach with her work\, just her own personal wish for peace and justice.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Prairie Mantras: Paint & Vinyl on Aluminum
DESCRIPTION:Desiree Warren’s current body of work is a journey using one shape (the orzo) to create a multitude of layers that evoke landscapes and organic assimilations. Growing up in the country in Kansas\, she had wide open spaces to explore\, as well as many of her family’s dilapidated farm buildings and overgrown pasture lands. At the University of Kansas\, she began working with street sign material and has continued to incorporate aluminum and vinyl in her work. Part of this series is included in the 2017 Women to Watch: Metals exhibition at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City\, Missouri\, where she lives and works.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Desert Southwest: Photography
DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Flint\, Michigan\, Daniel Sidoli has always had the creative itch. It led him to the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas and a BA degree in Fine Arts. With this body of work\, his intent is to capture images that illustrate the unique landscape that erosion sculpts over time. His goal with photography is to be artistic yet convey truth. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Border Crossers
DESCRIPTION:Students across campus—from LSA\, Engineering\, Art and Design\, and Information—will work with visiting artist Chico MacMurtrie during winter semester 2018 planning\, building\, and launching a 40-foot robotic sculpture that poetically explores the notion of borders and boundary conditions. The project\, led by the Institute for the Humanities\, symbolizes the humanities in action\, and the empowerment that can be achieved through working together\, overcoming obstacles and divides\, and discovering creative solutions.\n\nMacmurtrie is an award winning artist\, renowned internationally for his large-scale robotic sculpture\, whose work combines materiality and robotics\, the visceral and conceptual. His artist residency and interdisciplinary project \"Border Crossers\" encourages investigation of borders as constructed entities\, both embodying a simple curiosity to see what lies on the other side of a border (national\, architectural\, environmental\, etc.) and expression of a utopian desire to live in a world without borders.\n\nIn February\, MacMurtrie and the students will launch the robotic sculpture during two \"performances\" and MacMurtrie will give a special Penny W. Stamps Lecture. The gallery exhibition will include large-scale drawings which serve as plans and maps for MacMurtrie's visionary Border Crossers. Life-size robotic models will also be presented in the exhibition in conversation with the drawings. The models\, built by the all-student team with MacMurtrie's guidance\, are prototypes for the project\, offering preliminary steps in the workshop and the process towards realizing the large scale robotic sculpture.\n\nChico MacMurtrie is the Artistic Director of Amorphic Robot Works\, an interdisciplinary creative collective located in Brooklyn\, NY. MacMurtrie/ARW have received numerous awards for their experimental new media artworks\, including five grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Andy Warhol Foundation Grant\, the Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship\, VIDA Life 11.0\, and Prix Ars Electronica. Chico MacMurtrie was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in Fine Arts in 2016.\n\nVisiting artist Chico MacMurtrie's residency and project is sponsored by the U-M Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with U-M Museum of Art\, Michigan Robotics\, Michigan Engineering\, School of Information\, Penny Stamps Speaker Series\, Stamps School of Art and Design\, and ArtsEngin.

DESCRIPTION:Pre-Fab/Post-Fab: Art in a Readymade Era showcases the works of Heidi Barlow\, Shaina Kasztelan\, and Bailey Scieszka\, three young women artists based in Detroit\, MI. Their work\, although varying in style and form\, speaks to a generation growing up with the influence of mass consumption\, internet shopping\, the glut of plastic toys\, fake jewels\, and tchotchkes. Whereas artists of the ‘60s and ‘70s reached first for paint tubes and canvas\, these artists use inexpensive and lowbrow materials to twist the signifiers of pop culture\, as they relate to gender politics and American ideals. It’s a balancing act between the icing and the cake\, surface and substance. \n\nBarlow’s confection-like constructs are unsettling\, much like an empty float or matted-hair Barbie in a backyard pool. Although enticing\, they allude to something lost in the translation\, some sweetness\, or idealism gone missing\, along with what once mattered. Yet\, the work isn’t cynical\, but embraces transition instead. We’ve hardened a little in the process\, much like the stiff and sugary piping Barlow often incorporates in her works. And maybe that’s a good thing. \n\nIf Barlow’s aesthetic leans towards Stepford Wives gone awry and the guilty pleasure of eBay\, Shaina Kasztelan offers us psychedelic Middle America. Her assemblages are disorienting\, vertigo-inducing. Technicolor sculptures conjure up hallucinations of the mall\, or spinning carnival rides that last too long. Kasztelan’s work is sinister\, even a little menacing. As viewers we are leery.\n\nFinally\, Bailey Scieszka takes this subversive garish ethos full tilt and invents her own world\, literally morphing into her own creation. Scieszka’s alter-ego Old Put\, a demonic shape-shifting clown\, becomes the artist/protagonist and creates work in performance\, video and drawing. Old Put collects pop culture references like artifacts of a lost civilization\, and seems as likely to commit a murder as bake a cake. \n\nFor Barlow\, Kasztelan and Scieszka\, outdated paradigms about class\, good taste\, and femininity are just temporal flashes in the pan. And it’s their party.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:New at UMMA: Paul Rand
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the second half of the twentieth century\, pioneering art director and graphic designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) was celebrated for crafting the brand identities of such American corporate icons as ABC\, IBM\, UPS\, and Westinghouse. Rand considered the designer’s task to be the symbolic communication of a company’s character. This recent acquisition presentation features the poster Rand created as part of IBM’s THINK promotional campaign. The design is a rebus\, or visual puzzle\, wherein Rand cleverly transforms the letters of IBM’s logo into pictures. The whimsical use of symbols encourages viewers to interpret—or think—in order to comprehend the company’s intended message that it values “insight\,” “industriousness\,” and “motivation.” The poster is part of a larger recent gift of archival Paul Rand objects donated to UMMA by Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo—professor in the U-M Stamps School of Art and Design and published scholar on Paul Rand—and Maria Phillips.\n\nThis work was recently gifted to UMMA by Maria Phillips and Franc Nunoo-Quarcoo.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter
DESCRIPTION:Australian artist Patricia Piccinini’s strange\, hyperreal yet sentimental sculptures are often rooted in her speculative visualizations of future species—beings transformed by\, or even created by\, developments in genetic engineering and technology. On view at UMMA\, \"The Comforter\" presents the likeness of a young girl whose appearance suggests a rare genetic condition causing excessive hair across her face and body. In her lap she tenderly cradles an udder-shaped\, eyeless creature—a possible reference to current experiments in genetically altered milk-producing animals. The encounter staged by the sculpture\, though curious and unexplained\, appears to be one of innocence and intimacy\, and suggests the potential for emotional connection between a diversity of beings. This theme is a common one for Piccinini\, whose work incorporates (often obliquely) ideas and questions about the ethical implications of scientific progress and the conflicts in our culture between the natural and the man-made.\n\nLead support for \"Patricia Piccinini: The Comforter\" is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece
DESCRIPTION:Since the 1980s\, British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster have been known for their shadow sculptures built from materials as diverse as scrap metal\, garbage\, taxidermy\, and sex toys. When light is directed at these assemblages\, they project shadows that are exceptionally accurate and intricate representations of other things entirely.\n\n\"The Masterpiece\" (2014) is a shadow self-portrait of the artists created from metal casts of dead vermin they collected and welded together into a ball. From afar the casts appear to be a stunning abstract silver sculpture\; on closer inspection the disturbing menagerie of creatures emerges\, only to change form again—as a shadow on the wall—into a precise and elegant image that is astonishingly different from the objects that create it.\n\nLead support for \"Tim Noble and Sue Webster: The Masterpiece\" is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the Susan and Richard Gutow Fund\, and the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the Richard and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Thursday Lecture Series | A Woman’s Network in Japan around 1800
DESCRIPTION:The talk examines the family network of one woman throughout her life that connected families across geographical space and also across status boundaries in Edo Japan (1600–1868). Rai Shizu’s (1760–1843) network centers around families of Confucian scholars in the late Edo period who all shared similar goals. Though administratively a household was a male-centered organization—and we will encounter many fathers\, brothers and sons—women in their roles as mothers\, daughters\, and wives were indispensable for the maintenance and continuation of a household in addition to keeping up relations with other families. \n\nThe talk will introduce the Japanese Biographical Database:\nhttps://www.network-studies.org/#!/\n\nThe records of Rai Shizu—a diary kept for over fifty years and many letters—offer a wealth of materials that make clear her role and position in the family endeavor. We will accompany Shizu in her relations when a young wife and mother in the castle town of Hiroshima. While her husband Shunsui stayed in Edo on duty on and off for almost twelve years\, Shizu ran the household\, was responsible for her children’s education\, and was the important link in the family network. In her mature years\, when Shunsui returned and the children were older\, the couple’s house continued to be the center of the extended family and students. Even as a widow and of advanced age\, Shizu was never able to let go of her household duties or directing the family’s fortune.\n\nBettina Gramlich-Oka is professor of Japanese history at Sophia University\, Tokyo. Her current research interest combines intellectual networks\, economic thought\, and gender in the late Edo period. Most recent publication is “‘Knowing the [Confucian] Way’ and the Political Sphere.” In \"Religion\, Culture and the Public Sphere in China and Japan\" (Religion and Society in Asia Pacific)\, ed. Albert Welter\, Jeffrey Newmark\, pp. 87–114. Palgrave MacMillan\, 2017.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:LSI Seminar Series: Thomas Schwarz\, Ph.D.\, Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nNeurons are highly dependent on mitochondria\, but they also face exceptional problems in trying to maintain the necessary energy supply throughout their extended architecture. Neurons must last a lifetime\, but their proteins turn over in hours or weeks. Although a mitochondrion may be needed in a distant synapse\, the genes that encode its proteins are mainly encoded in the nucleus. Axonal transport of mitochondria is a crucial part of the solution\, but so too is the transport of mRNA to support the local synthesis of mitochondrial proteins. The need for local synthesis is particularly acute in the case of the Parkinson’s disease protein PINK1\; absent such synthesis\, acutely damaged mitochondria cannot be cleared rapidly by mitophagy.\n\nBoxed lunch will be provided

SUMMARY:Other:6th Annual Open-Book Translation Contest
DESCRIPTION:University of Michigan German Department - 6th Annual Open-Book Translation Contest\n\nThursday\, February 22\,\n4-5:30 p.m.\,\nMason Hall 2401\n(RSVP by Monday\, February 19\, 5 p.m.)\n \nStudents are invited to put their translation skills to the test by participating in the sixth annual University of Michigan German Department Open-Book Translation Contest! This contest will be judged by a panel of three faculty members. The entries will be identified only by the student’s university ID number\, making the judging anonymous. There will be monetary prizes of $150 for first place\, $125 for second place\, and $100 for third place!\n\nParticipants: All undergraduate University of Michigan students currently enrolled in a German course or who are registered as a German major or minor are welcome to participate.\n\nRegistration: All contest participants are required to register for the contest by 5 p.m. on Monday\, February 19! To register contact Andrew Mills: ajmills@umich.edu.\n\nAlternative times: If students can demonstrate that they cannot make the contest time due to their class schedule or work schedule constraints\, an alternative time and location can be arranged. This alternative time must be arranged and confirmed before 5 p.m. on Monday\, February 19\, and must take place at some point during the day of Thursday\, February 22.\n\nContest Rules: The contest will be held under the same conditions used by the American Translators Association (ATA) for its certification exam. Students will have 70 minutes to translate a text by hand that will be provided for them. The translation will be from German to English. The contest will be held in “open book” format. Students will not have access to the internet\, but may bring and use as many hardback or paperback dictionaries as they wish. All students receive the same text\, which will be approximately 225-275 words in length. The contest must be written in (dark) pencil capable of being photo-copied for our judges. Students must bring their own pencils. Paper will be provided. \n\nThe text to be translated will be “general” in nature. This text expresses a view\, sets forth an argument\, or presents an idea or situation. Examples include: a newspaper article\, an essay\, or a passage from a non-fiction book. The contest passage is chosen in such a way as to avoid highly specialized terminology requiring research. There are\, however\, terminology challenges in the text\, and knowledge of German culture\, society\, and history often is necessary for contestants to excel. \n\nChallenge yourself! The worst that could happen is you discover how things stand with your translation skills. The best thing that could happen: you win some money! \n\nAccommodations may be made for participants who demonstrate that they cannot write the text by hand. Please contact Andrew Mills at ajmills@umich.edu by 5 p.m. on Monday\, February 19.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:AE585 Graduate Seminar Series - Active Flutter Suppression Fifty Years of Technology Development and Where We Are Today
DESCRIPTION:Eli Livne\nBoeing Endowed Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics\nUniversity of Washington\, Seattle\, Washington\n\nActive Flutter Suppression\, a part of the group of flight vehicle technologies known as Active Control\, is an important contributor to the effective solution of aeroelastic instability problems when they pop up late in the development of a new aircraft. If used from the start of the design process it is a key element in multidisciplinary design optimization that would lead to more efficient aircraft. The technology has been known and pursued for more than 50 years and yet only recently has it seen civil-aircraft acceptance with strict limitations by government certification authorities. While used in some cases on military aircraft\, it has not been accepted for wide spread application by militaries around the world. \n\nBecause of its wide multidisciplinary nature and the tight interdisciplinary interactions involved\, Active Flutter Suppression\, part of the field known as Aeroservoelasticity\, is\, from a technical perspective\, at the heart of aeronautics. The talk will describe key milestones\, the state of the art\, and key challenges in making this technology widely accepted with\, potentially\, a resulting major impact on aircraft design.\n\nAbout the speaker...\n\nProfessor Livne holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in aeronautical engineering from the Technion\, Israel\, and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering from the UCLA. He served in the Israeli Air Force in various research and development roles\, eventually founding its aeroelasticity / structural dynamic branch\, which he led for ten years\, working on the aeroservoelastic and design aspects of numerous aircraft systems. Among other responsibilities he was the head of the engineering team that brought the first F16s to Israel and he was in charge\, for the Israeli Ministry of Defense\, of the aeroservoelastic development of the Israel Aircraft Industries Lavie Fighter Jet.\n\nAfter graduating UCLA Prof. Livne joined the faculty of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Washington in 1990. Over the course of his academic career\, Prof. Livne has continued extensive collaboration with both industry and defense organizations. Highlights of these collaborations include structural and aeroelastic optimization and lightweight airframe design with Boeing Commercial Aircraft\, contributions to the NASA High Speed Civil Transport project\, and contributions to industry / government wind tunnel aeroelastic tests of highly nonlinear flight vehicle configurations.\n\nProf. Livne heads the airplane design education and research program at the University of Washington. With expertise in aeroelasticty\, aeroservoelasticity\, multidisciplinary flight vehicle optimization\, aircraft design\, aerospace structures\, structural optimization\, and structural dynamics\, Professor Livne's research has been funded by NASA\, the FAA\, AFOSR\, ONR\, NSF\, and by Boeing. He is a Fellow of the AIAA and currently\, the Editor-in-Chief of the AIAA's Journal of Aircraft.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Labors of Love and Loss - Artist Talk and Reception
DESCRIPTION:Labors of Love and Loss is a collection of mixed media pieces that explore themes of gender and race and considers the intertwined lives of caregivers\, their dependents and charges. Historically\, in both southern African American life and in the tenuous strivings of the 19th century working underclass\, the primary care and comfort of others fell to women. Beyond impersonal household chores\, these responsibilities entwined with sweetness and hope\, heartache and loss\, assured the wellbeing of those around them. How did they balance the tangle of necessity and demand against their own emotional involvements and aspirations? Labors of Love and Loss is a tribute to the resolve\, commitment and fortitude of women’s love and labor.\n\nMarianetta Porter is Professor of Art and Design at Stamps School of Art and Design. Her work is grounded in the study of African American history\, culture\, and representation\, drawing on ethnography\, religious traditions\, folklore\, visual culture\, and language to investigate the consequences of the trans-Atlantic slave trade\, the vernacular art of the black church\, the politics of visibility\, and the poetics of color.\n\nLisa Olson is a mixed media artist and alumna of the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art and Design. Her work takes a variety of forms---books\, prints\, collage\, drawing and sculptural objects. Olson often uses text in combination with visual components to create meaning. Her interests include studies surrounding the fragility of the individual within historically harsh or oppressive class related social structures and the resulting tools and systems created as strategies to navigate through. \n\nAn artist talk will take place in Lane Hall (Room 2239) on Thursday\, February 22 at 4:00pm. Each artist will speak individually about her work with time for audience questions. Following the talk\, there will be an opening reception in Lane Hall Gallery (1st Floor) to enjoy the artwork and light refreshments. This event is free and open to the public.\n\nThis exhibit is co-sponsored by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender\, Department of Women’s Studies\, Stamps School of Art & Design\, Residential College\, Department of American Culture\, Institute for the Humanities\, and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies.\n\nExhibit will be on public display January - July 2018

SUMMARY:Presentation:Naturalistic language experiments: opportunities\, challenges and progress
DESCRIPTION:Due to the complexity of language processing\, most neurobiology-of-language studies focus on answering a specific hypothesis by using highly controlled stimuli. I will argue that naturalistic experiments along with predictive modeling provide a promising alternative to the controlled approach. I will outline some details of the naturalistic approach using a specific example in which subjects read a complex natural text while their functional neuroimaging data is acquired using fMRI and MEG. I will describe how to use natural language processing tools in order to build encoding models that predict brain activity as a function of the different semantic\, syntactic and discourse features of the stimulus. The performance of these models allows us to formulate and test hypotheses about the functions of different brain regions and build detailed spatiotemporal brain language maps. Importantly\, I will comment on the interpretation of the results of naturalisticexperiments\, what they can tell us\, what they can't tell us\, and how to situate them in the broader neurobiology-of-language literature. I will address some of the main arguments against the naturalistic approach by showing several current projects aimed at (i) directly comparing the results of naturalistic and controlled experiments and (ii) modeling the effect of the language task -- such as language production or comprehension -- on the brain's language representations. I will end by describing an overarching framework in which naturalistic experiments and controlled experiments go hand-in-hand to study how information is represented and accessed during language processing.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Perpetually Foreign\, Perpetually Inferior: Racial Microaggressions and Linguistic Othering
DESCRIPTION:Racial microaggressions are subtle and persistent insults that position people of color as “less than” – less intelligent\, less American\, less qualified\, etc. In the presence of racial microaggressions\, white people experience a “stereotype lift\,” benefiting from comparisons to other racial categories (McGee and Martin). In this talk\, I describe how the practice of responding to student writing can work to reaffirm the Americanness and intelligence of white students while de-Americanizing Asian American and Latinx students and positioning Black and African American students as inferior and less capable.\n\nBethany Davila is an assistant professor of Rhetoric and Writing at the University of New Mexico where she co-founded (along with Cristyn L. Elder) their Stretch and Studio Composition program. She is a co-editor of a forthcoming collection\, Defining\, Locating\, and Addressing Bullying in the WPA Workplace (with Cristyn L. Elder) published by Utah State University Press. Her research focuses on the social construction of linguistic difference\; written standardness and racial privilege\; instructors’ perceptions of student writers based on written language features\; and workplace bullying as it pertains to WPAs. Her publications appear in Written Communication\, WPA: Writing Program Administration\, Composition Forum\, and Composition Studies.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Picturesque Soldier and Mourning Mother: Gender\, Memory\, and the First World War in Interwar Serbia
DESCRIPTION:This lecture focuses on two types of sources\, laments of Serbian women and photographs by Serbian military photographers\, as entry points into understanding the private\, cultural\, and religious arenas of Serbian First World War and interwar remembrances. Drawing on research examining the political uses of lament and grief\, the lecture considers the role Serbian women played in controlling and directing the “passion of grief and anger” within their communities as they remembered the dead. The photographic evidence reveals that traditional death rituals and laments were performed and that these rituals were significant socio-political spaces where women\, families\, and communities of soldiers advanced claims or recognition of their wartime experiences and memories. \n\nMelissa Bokovoy is a professor at the University of New Mexico. She teaches courses on eastern and western Europe in the twentieth century\, as well as the western civilization surveys. Her main area of research is the history of the south Slavs (Yugoslavia) in the twentieth century. She has worked primarily on the post World War II period\, focusing on the social and political relationships between Yugoslav society and its Communist party-state.

SUMMARY:Other:Ti-Catalyzed Nitrene Transfer Reactions: \nHarnessing the Ti(II)/Ti(IV) Redox Couple for New Organic Methods\n
DESCRIPTION: Titanium is an ideal metal for green and sustainable catalysis—it is the 2nd most earth-abundant transition metal\, and the byproducts of Ti reactions (TiO2) are nontoxic. However\, a significant challenge of utilizing early transition metals for catalytic redox processes is that they typically do not undergo facile oxidation state changes because of the thermodynamic stability of their high oxidation states. We have recently discovered that Ti imidos (LnTi=NR) can catalyze oxidative nitrene transfer reactions from diazenes via a TiII/TiIV redox couple\, and are using this new mode of reactivity to develop a large suite of practical synthetic methods. In this talk\, our latest synthetic and mechanistic discoveries related to Ti nitrene transfer catalysis will be discussed\, including new synthetic methods for the modular\, selective construction of pyrroles via [2+2+1] cycloaddition of alkynes with Ti nitrenes and alkynes\, as well as new methods for catalytic oxidative carboamination of other unsaturated organics by Ti nitrenes. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \nIan Tonks (University of Minnesota)
